Overnight Open Thread (5 Aug 2016)

Federal agency says wearing 'Don't Tread on Me' hat might be racist. Oh for crying out loud. Is the First Navy Jack next?

In other dumbass news, a feminist declares the invention of the alphabet the root of sexism, misogyny and patriarchy.

Maet Tribute Video

This was posted by ace earlier in the day but deserves some lovin' in the ONT. Great job by weirddave.

Super Lice

Mutant 'super lice' outbreak has now spread to nearly every state. Oh this is gonna fun for this school year.

Australia

Hopefully being a gun free zone works out for them. Australia is Islamic State's third top target in the West, US committee says.

Green Power

UCMJ

Heh. 8 military punishments that wouldn't fly in the civilian world.

Real World Education

I learned more at McDonald's than at college.

Legaspi suggests that when she was working at McDonald's, there were no trigger warnings before irate customers complained to her and no safe spaces to which she could retreat.

She correctly explains that if she complained to her boss that the fast pace of her work made her uncomfortable, he would have handed her a final paycheck and showed her to the door.

Roundabouts

Glad I never had to use this roundabout in my time overseas.

Poll Result

Not surprising. Most young Americans say parties don't represent them. Democrats still have the edge. If the Trumpers are hoping for third party help by siphoning off votes from Clinton, this does not bode well in that regard.

But for all the disenchantment, young adults across racial and ethnic groups are mostly unfamiliar with their alternatives. Seven in 10 say they don't know enough about Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson to have an opinion about him, and nearly 8 in 10 say the same about Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Hollywood and Technology

Someday Hollywood will make an intelligent movie about technology and hacking. 'Jason Bourne' is embarrassingly dumb about tech.

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn bodypaint. Impressive. Most impressive.

The Hegemonic Dynamics of Children Swimming
Posted on August 5, 2016 by The Political Hat

When left to their own devices, boys will tend to play with boys and girls will tend to play with girls. This startling bit of obviousness was stumbled upon by University of Southern California graduate student Michela Musto, as seen by her paper "Athletes in the Pool, Girls and Boys on Deck: The Contextual Construction of Gender in Coed Youth Swimming".

Posted by: rickl at August 05, 2016 10:17 PM (sdi6R)

Same way it doesn't catch on fire -- bearings.

It's designed to rotate, rotate, rotate and that creates friction, friction, friction, so you have to have nice lubricated bearings to allow it to spin freely. But when you don't initially buy very nice bearings, or you allow the bearings to lose lubricant, they get hot awfully fast -- and any remaining lubricant becomes fuel.

101 To progs, anything uplifting and patriotic in America must be destroyed so they can install their vile Leader-uber-alles religion, like they did in North Korea and Zimbabwe.

To me, the natural reaction to such treason is a form of "... Delenda Est"; but I am learning to trust God not humans--us being fickle, weak, and corruptible.

And I'm not willing (as a large, slow-moving, improperly-trained target), to acquire at great cost sufficient arms and ammunition as are required for home/family defense and then turn it over to the government (or such surrogates as may be allowed to kill me and take it). YMMV.

Well, that and the chemo has dulled my reflexes and clouded my thinking to the point where I think I shouldn't have firearms until the cancer is gone and the side-effects are worn off. Don't want to cause any issues...

119 The problem with windmill fires. Once the start they automatically start fanning the flames.

Posted by: Willy J. at August 05, 2016 10:28 PM (BZey7)

120 Failing bearings can make things red hot. Combines (the things you harvest grains and crap with) have lots and lots of shafts that turn, and lots and lots of bearings. They go out a lot.

They can start fires if you don't catch them in time.

A little jackshaft on an old combine we were running, and I was in my 20s I guess that drove the hydraulic pump off the engine went out. It started a little smoldering fire in the dust build-up all around. That fire finally burned through the main output hose of the pump. It made a spectacular flame-thrower like effect coming out the side.

My father was driving it, and shit his pants. I shit mine when I saw it in another combine.

It was desperate situation.

I got a lesson in bearings and fire Monday morning. I noticed I was
trailing smoke headed down the highway. Got off the next exit, right
rear wheel area was on fire. I had an extinguisher, so all good.

The cheater bearing and grease the asshole who sold me the car used
to conceal a bad axle and rear end had gone up. Without the
extinguisher, the whole thing could have gotten kind of sporty.

214 A basic roundabout is very simple. You have to stop before entering it. You can only turn right going in. Once in you can keep going round and round, or turn right to exit.

Its like being on a one way street and coming to a stop at another one way street - your only choice is to turn right.

Where they screw it up is when they get away from the basic function and make certain lanes as 'must exit only' so then the incoming lane doesn't have to stop, etc.

It generally works well, as the accidents to date have been surprisingly few. The are some conventional intersection in the area that are far more trouble prone.

My sister hates it, though. She goes to absurd lengths to bypass it, like taking the long way through the neighborhood where we used to live to avoid the intersection. Or she'll go further down the road in the opposite direction of where she is headed so she can pick up the 5 Freeway and exit after getting past the roundabout. It adds anywhere from five to ten minutes to any trip she makes through that part of town.

I like having a clean car, so I pay for an unlimited wash card for $35/month, plus tip.

302 "A good number of drivers can barely handle head first diagonal parking."

If you haven't seen the video covertly filmed of Eleanor Holmes Norton trying to manage a diagonal parking job on a side street next to the Capitol, it's a classic of the genre. She has five or six goes at it, and eventually gets the car sorta vaguely into the space.

After hitting one of the neighboring vehicles. And then casually trotting off down the sidewalk without leaving a note regarding the damage she had caused.

If you or I did that and were identified as having done so, we'd be down at central booking on hit and run charges. But of course Our Betters face no such consequences in This Town.

Our Betters literally can't _park a goddamned car_ safely and competently, but still nevertheless think they're born, booted and spurred, to ride atop the rest of our backs.

322 Statistically, roundabouts are supposed to be far safer. 39% less collisions, 76% fewer injuries, and 90% fewer serious/fatal injuries. That's what they claim.

In regular square intersections, you get head-on and T-bone collisions, and at high speed. In the roundabouts, the collisions are more side-swipe, less angle of impact.

Those statistics are actually from here in the US, where roundabouts have replaced regular intersections.

That's why they are becoming a thing here.

329 It's designed to rotate, rotate, rotate and that creates friction, friction, friction, so you have to have nice lubricated bearings to allow it to spin freely. But when you don't initially buy very nice bearings, or you allow the bearings to lose lubricant, they get hot awfully fast -- and any remaining lubricant becomes fuel.
Posted by: cthulhu

I've read that a problem they have with the ball-bearings is that if they're too small they get damaged too easily; and if they're too big, they create too much heat friction. They think it's going to take a new alloy to fix this current problem. Ha-ha.

So think about how old those places are now and how few of them have been well maintained. Going down some of those streets is pretty dreary.

Remember the old Newhall jail that was near the end of Lyons? It's now the main branch of the Santa Clarita Library. They got fed up with some of the LA County Library system's problems, so they started their own by buying some of the existing branches from the county and renovating the jail building. There are still county branches in a few places around the area, though, so people aren't entirely cut off.

350 Around my local area here, they've made a lot of the intersections 4-ways now (or all-ways) depending. It was to reduce crashes, which were increasing, as the local traffic increased.

The problem is, it takes us old locals much longer to get used to having to stop in one direction, and then not waiting on a car coming when you're going in the old stop direction.

At one stop, a T intersection, they made it an all-way, and at peak traffic hours, the cars are backing up because of all the stopping in that direction. They're going to have put a red light there because it has congested things too much, and it's really too far out in the country for a red light.

But it's all about reducing fatal accidents.

There was a recollection I once read about a huge Turkish diamond merchant, living and working in the UK, who came into the same London restaurant every day for lunch, and ate the same multi-course meal every day. Including downing a full bottle of what he called "English wine".

"English wine" being what the rest of us call Scotch whiskey.

I always thought "Maet" was more like a combination of "Mate" and "bet", than "Matt". There is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the pronunciation -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86 -- and numerous examples such as "encyclopaedia", "aerie", and "aether". Among Morons, we should defer to such usage as Maetenloch, himself, prefers.

And, yes, Maet's a Duke, though I've never seen him show any favor to a certain University in Durham, NC.

My experience of Atlanta was being there for the 1998 E3, during the brief period they didn't hold it in L.A. Nintendo had their press event at some venue in Buckhead and many of us were amazed to hear that there was a place with such a name. My question was what the residents called themselves. Years later, the guy who first drew attention to the veracity of the documents Dan Rather tried to use to smear Bush leading into the 2004 election had Buckhead as part of his username on Free Republic and it felt like a weird connection to know what it meant even though my time there was measured in hours.

Sega had their presser at a place called the Fox Theater, if that means anything to you. It was the debut announcement of the Dreamcast. As is required for such things, they demoed at least two games that were never released in any form. This is apparently a requirement for introducing a new game console.

Around my local area here, they've made a lot of the intersections
4-ways now (or all-ways) depending. It was to reduce crashes, which were
increasing, as the local traffic increased.

The problem is, it
takes us old locals much longer to get used to having to stop in one
direction, and then not waiting on a car coming when you're going in the
old stop direction.

At one stop, a T intersection, they made
it an all-way, and at peak traffic hours, the cars are backing up
because of all the stopping in that direction. They're going to have put
a red light there because it has congested things too much, and it's
really too far out in the country for a red light.

But it's all about reducing fatal accidents.

Handy tip for my peeps who enjoy Del Taco like I do: if you want enough
hot sauce to go with your next six taco meals, ask for 10 sauce packets.
If you want to never have to ask for hot sauce packets again in your
life, ask for 20 packets. And if you want to LAY WASTE TO THE ENTIRE
EARTH, covering it miles and miles deep in hot sauce packets for
generations to come, ask for 30 packets. O.M.G.!!!

Still, "likeable enough" is a step up for DC/Warner's, even though it's still full of the glib nihilism of the typical Hollywood screenwriter or SJW comics author trying to retcon/erase any traces of earlier popular culture and the embarrassing comparisons to their contemporary crap.

442 Here's a paper on roundabouts in the US by the ITE (traffic engineers):

http://tinyurl.com/hadldva

According to that, there are less crashes at minor and medium intersections with roundabouts, but more crashes at major intersections.

Now, when you look at "injury crashes", crashes resulting in significant injury the roundabouts were still less at the major interesections.

Now, I didn't know this, but traffic circle intersections were tried here in the US very early on. They had high crash rates, but the cause is taken because the incoming traffic had the right of way -- those already in the circle had to yield to incoming.

Posted by: richard mcenroe at August 06, 2016 12:09 AM (Kucy5)

444 My .02 on roundabouts is that they slow traffic down deliberately. The powers that be don't give a shit if the people don't know how to navigate them, and by being ignorant, cause many more minor accidents than previously at that spot.

Wi had a transportation secretary under the last governor that loved him some roundabout and made it impossible to get state money for roads if you didn't put them in.
No money for educating the rubes about how to navigate them.

By the way, I love going through roundabouts on my bike, especially the smaller ones during off peak hours.
I pick a line from the far right of the right lane, to just missing the curb of the inside lane to just missing the gravel on the outside lane again, and you can just rocket through, it's nearly straight.

otherwise I hate em.

In other lore..., he was imprisoned for nearly seventy years at the hands of really, really bad imprisoners.

He only touched that chicken to pet it. The videotape was never introduced as evidence because Palistinians are dicks.

He is a stand-up guy and he would never fondle your goat. He only fondled mined because I paid him.

If you have a spare five-hundy, I'm just saying that he's the guy to jack-off your various bovidae. He's talented, I'll give him that.

When he invaded Canada, he took out thirty-seven Mounties before they knew he was even aboot.

It wasn't part of a "mission", he just needed syrup for his flapjacks.

Fucker comes back with seven fifty-five gallon drums, American Style.

He was awarded the Great Lakes Medal of Sweetness three times. Once for the syrup and two other times for unrelated instances.

When I speak of him, I will not alter my volume, not tenor. I will cast his praises to the Heavens, unrepentantly.

I knew this man.

I knew him as a Golden God.

Well they certainly have more of them for sure. But except for the Pearl roundabout (which was taken out about 5 or 6 years ago), I don't recall any roundabouts in Bahrain that were particularly big.

Of course, I lived in Saudia at the time (which was also heavily invested in roundabouts), so even though I visited Manama a lot, I could still have missed something.

In Saudia, my wife commented that the straightest route in Riyadh is four U-turns.

In May, Richard "Scott" Silverthorne won his third term as mayor of Fairfax, a city of 24,000 just west of Washington, D.C.

Silverthorne ran his re-election campaign while he suffered a bout of personal setbacks, including filing for federal bankruptcy last September, losing his home to foreclosure and then being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. At the time, he had just been laid off from his job as a director of recruitment with the National Association of Manufacturers.

"Now I'm bouncing back," Silverthorne told The Post after winning re-election. "The city of Fairfax made me the comeback mayor."

528 A basic roundabout is very simple.

Posted by: Burnt Toast at August 05, 2016 10:59 PM (P/kVC)

No, you don't have to stop before entering a roundabout. That's the whole idea. No driver has to stop. You yield to vehicles on your left, but stop only if traffic from the left is too dense to enter.

All you need to know about roundabouts is this: "vehicles already in the roundabout have the LEFT of way".

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at August 05, 2016 11:25 PM (DW+jj)

I tend to believe that, as it jibes with my personal experience. The big problem with roundabouts is that planners tend to put them where they don't belong. They are fine if you have two (or more) intersecting streets with substantially equal volumes of traffic. There is a slight delay for all concerned, but nobody has to come to a full stop and twiddle their thumbs for 90 seconds waiting for the damned lights to cycle.

But on a rural secondary highway, with a cross street that has, at best 10% of the traffic of the highway, a roundabout causes unnecessary delay to the traffic on the main route. There are two roundabouts on U.S. 60 near Wickenburg, AZ, that should not be there, for that exact reason; not enough traffic volume on the cross streets. Overpasses, or simple two-way stop signs would be preferable.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 06, 2016 01:35 AM (f3Uae)

545 There is an exit ramp off the interstate where I live that used to be a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp. If you needed to turn left or go straight, it was crossing six lanes of traffics of moderate traffic. That was replaced with a roundabout. And life is sooooo much better with it. I never understand people who hate these things.

Posted by: #neverskankles at August 06, 2016 01:35 AM (s6X53)

549 I've read that a problem they have with the ball-bearings is that if they're too small they get damaged too easily; and if they're too big, they create too much heat friction. They think it's going to take a new alloy to fix this current problem. Ha-ha.

Posted by: andycanuck at August 05, 2016 11:27 PM (LdMbv)

The bearings are heavily loaded. Those giant propeller blades are heavy. If they don't constantly rotate, the balls in the bearings can develop flat spots. That leads to metal being plucked out of the bearing races. Look up "brinelling".

550 @541 I think the last F-4 drone is going to be shot down by the end of this month or next. I worked C models so I imagine all the ones I worked are already at the bottom of the gulf. I did a long TDY to Montana in 87 to teach them how to phase F-16s. They still had a bunch of 106s left and the 16s had a lot of phase time left on them. I learned a bunch about 106s that year.

The house I spent most of my childhood was struck, twice, by lightning.

The first time, it nailed the stovepipe for the woodstove. Burnt the front of the house to ashes in no time, flat.

Amazingly, we recovered and rebuilt. About five or six years later, there was another strike, but this one was different - the concussion (or maybe it was surprise) knocked us all off our feet. There was a bright blue glow in the dining room, and a small hole - just big enough to put your thumb in - in the roof, the ceiling, and the floor. It was weird.

Here in AZ it not unusual for them to build a road one way just to get it done, then come back and tear it up (when they have the funds) and rebuild it they way they originally wanted to.

577 AOP - Great Haynes jokes. I had an early CB750 that blew a head gasket. The engine has to be pulled to replace that gasket. Seems simple enough, but it isn't. There are brackets and etc that have to come off, pipes removed, etc., etc. and then a twist applied to get it out of the proper side of the frame.

The Haynes instructions?

1. Loosen engine mount bolts.

2. Remove engine.

578 Yep, pedal cyclists. The number of cyclists there is increasing greatly. I'm sure it's all the globull-warming, cars-are-evil nonsense. But they are getting in the roundabouts and the accident rates with them are much higher than in other intersections.

The problem they're finding with congestion is indeed, as someone above mentioned, when traffic flow is much heavier along one path. That flow just overwhelms the circle and drivers in the other direction have to stop and wait to get a chance to enter. So they've had to start putting traffic lights to stop that heavy flow and let the others get a change to get in.

The part about traffic in one direction is what we have here on Happy Valley and I-17. The E to W traffic is so heavy at rush hour, trying to get off the freeway to head E or W means a looong wait. Much longer than if it was a standard intersection. I am not a timid driver and I have waited 10 minutes several times to kamikaze my way into the roundabout.

590 I don't doubt it exploded the remote control. Lightning can do some crazy things. I'd like to learn more about just what happened before I could even make a guess at the mechanism.

There are still unknown lightning phenomena -- see ball lightning for instance. They still don't know what it is exactly, but it is confirmed to exist physically, now. There was a theory that it was actually an hallucination caused by some EM effect on the brain produced by real lightning.

They can now produce effects in the lab similar to ball lightning by various mechanisms, but it's still unknown what the real thing is.

There's even a serious proposal than some ball lightning events are actually nano-black holes (the "primordial black holes") slamming into the earth. :-)

There are also roundabouts on, if I remember right, Brown Road, adjacent to the off-ramps from the 202 loop freeway, and you have to go very slow to get through them. Not at all good. Poor planning decision, or else a deliberate attempt to make drivers avoid using that exit?

Managua, Nicaragua has numerous roundabouts on 4-way, 5-way, and 6-way intersections, in what is basically a completely un-planned city, and you know what? They work like a damn. Traffic just scoots along. It's a thing of beauty to watch. But good luck crossing one as a pedestrian, LOL.

Edmonton, Alberta, has had traffic circles for decades, long before they became "trendy". Of course, they have fucked them up, by installing traffic lights, which defeats the entire purpose of a traffic circle, which is to allow traffic on crossing streets to flow uninterrupted.

It's totally a "horses for courses" deal. Not a "one size fits all" proposition.

602 I've got a pending roof project in Seabrook, TX. Lightning strike.

Absolutely consumed every appliance and device in that house, but in this case, not the remotes.

But even the table lamps have to be rebuilt.

Here's the wild thing though.

Even though this house has the hole in the roof from the lightning bolt, the destroyed electrics, etc.

The neighbor's house also took a hell of a hit from the same bolt. It went to ground across the connected sewer lines, fried the OTHER house, before it dissipated.

And if you want to see some scary stuff, just look at the blast-pattern scorch marks emanating from every outlet, fixture and even every doorknob in the house.

How that 3 million dollar, 3,500 sq.ft. waterfront property didn't just simply burn down, befuddles me.

It was fried, but didn't ignite.

I'm sure that the rewiring bid will be closer to six figures, than not. It's that bad.

As it is, I'll be putting a $25k roof on the thing.

And giving 'em a referral to a good lightning rod/ground/system guy I know in the bargain.

With that, too... I'm to snoozeville, y'all.

Ball lightning is a plasmoid, basically a self-contained ball of super-hot plasma. I saw one once. Not from lightning, but from a short circuit in a 480 volt 3-phase plug on a drilling rig. I happened to be outside on the lease, looking toward the panel of interest at the time. There was a bright flash, a loud bang, and this pingpong-ball sized ball of brilliant white light came bouncing across the lease towards me, but vanished without a trace before covering half the distance. Pretty spectacular. The plug in question had a 1/2" round hole burned through its aluminum shell.

624 When lightning "gets on" romex in walls, the result looks like you just grabbed the wire and ripped it out of the sheetrock, leaving a jagged trail along the wall. This is the copper melting and exploding. You can see little drops of copper all over the place.

Now, being on the end of a power line, a local distribution line, especially a long one with no loads for a while, can be problematic with induced voltages and things like that. It's the wave effects of a high frequency pulse. Anyway, the voltage spikes at the end can get very high, and for a house with a transformer on the end, it can be something.

Around here in the old days, there were tales of balls of fire jumping out of the receptacles, light bulbs exploding and all that with customers on the end of lines like that out in the country.

631 I had a productive day today, for some values of "productive". Yesterday, I scavenged two old one-cylinder engines of of the metal pile at the town dump "transfer station". A small Kohler, maybe 2HP, and a big Wisconsin, maybe 12 HP.

Today, I cleaned up the little guy, including de-rusting the inside of the fuel tank with a shot of 30% hydrochloric acid, which worked like a charm. Cleaned out the carb, cleaned and filed the points, and gapped them, scraped carbon from the head and valves, and washed all the grease off with solvent. Hammered dents out of the fan shroud. Put some fuel in it, and it starts readily, and runs fine at part throttle or full throttle, but won't idle. I suspect that a tiny hole in the venturi, just upstream of the throttle butterfly, is plugged. You have to pull a small Welch plug out of the side of the carb to get at it to clean it, which I did not do, because no spare plug on hand. Anyway, I set it aside, because mission accomplished: it runs.

Made a good start on the Wisconsin. Stripped it down, washed off a heavy coating of grease and gunk. Blew water out of the Wico impulse magneto, cleaned the points. Installed a lip seal in place of the dried out cork seal on the flywheel and of the crankshaft. Found a spark plug wire, and a N.O.S. 18 mm spark plug. No spark. Took cover off the magneto. Hmmm...the little leaf spring that closes the points is rubbing against the mounting plate. Shifted it aside with a screwdriver. Put cover back on mag, Turned engine over slowly by hand; impulse mag goes "clunk", and a nice fat spark at the plug. Squirted a little gas in the cylinder, installed the spark plug, and wrapped my starter rope around the pulley. One tug, and it took off and ran for about 2 seconds, until the shot of fuel was consumed. So the internals are sound. Carburetor is soaking in solvent tank. Looks like this puppy will need an acid bath for the fuel tank, too. Carburetor is cast iron, of the up-suck persuasion. So, a two-fer. One runs, and the other will run, as the fundamentals are there. Fun day.

Sorry to hear that you got dumped on at work.

I hate to see old, but still viable machinery wastefully thrown away. Neither of these engines needed much more than a clean-up and a tune-up. They are both still capable of doing the sort of work that they were built to do. I will probably put one to work as the prime mover in a hydraulic power pack, along with the hydraulic pump out of an old fork lift I scrapped out. I will probably use the Wisconsin for that, even though it is massive overkill, power wise. It can just idle its way through lifting whatever the hydraulics lift, and last forever doing it.

There's one in Utah. Could *only* come from the mind of an academic planner.

Take an intersection, add *four* more lights, and have left-turning traffic in two directions *cross opposite direction traffic* to make their turn.

Traffic gets heavy, and turning traffic gets stuck *across* the main lanes, and *still* has to turn left across traffic.

Also, how does adding *more* lights and stops make it "continuous flow" in any way justifiable in the English language? They say you don't delay oncoming traffic, but that is physically impossible and complete nonsense on a single level. You can't cross oncoming traffic without delaying it. Moving that crossing 100 feet from the intersection creates two (or four) more intersections, it doesn't reduce crap. It just moves the delay 100 feet from the intersection.

And if the lights aren't timed perfectly, a lot of people end up hanging in the way of up to *four* sets of oncoming traffic.

And pedestrians have to walk twice as far and wait three times, and corner businesses have less access to traffic.

I swear to God traffic studies have become as unreliable as social studies. This is *twice* as complicated as a traditional intersection and allows *less* stack-up space for traffic, you will have *more jammed up lanes because you *increase* the light cycles...

It's like these people are actually running a social science experiment to see how much shit people will take. It's like I'm less likely to have a collision at a roundabout BECAUSE I AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Oh, and you can't see what's at the intersection until you're committed to either turn or go straight, and you can't change your mind near the intersection.

But oh, they saved 19 tons of carbon dioxide per year! And it only cost 2,975 tons of carbon dioxide to build!

It's a stream of a Buffalo, NY radio interview with a guy who was the Clinton's travel chef for four years.

Hey, I listen to that guy. He's on locally after Limbaugh. Tom Bauerle. I work from home and I find music to be too distracting most of the time, and I have to turn it down whenever my work phone rings. So I usually listen to talk radio.

Bauerle calls himself a "conserva-tarian." He brings some of the worst side of the "-tarian" in that he's often a conspiracy nut. But he gets good guests (I've heard Trump and Coulter recently on his show) and he's usually a good listen. As long as no one gets him going on the Kennedy assassination or some such.

He had Hillary Clinton on way back when she was running for the Senate and grilled her pretty hard, earning him 15 minutes of hate in the national news.

660 Three NBA players "accidentally" go into a brothel in Rio. The most interesting thing, to me though, was:

"Instead, USA Basketball rented The Silver Cloud a 514-foot, 196-suite luxury cruise ship to serve as a home away from home. It's docked in the waters off Rio, nowhere near the other regular athletes. It has pools, gyms, hot tubs, beds built for 7-footers, bars, a cigar lounge, plenty of places to play cards and hang out"

661 I grew up in the woods and oil leases of east Texas. After I finished up my work, mostly painting, I was allowed to roam the woods and squirrel hunt. My directional aid was that dad had several Fairbanks Morris single cylinder engines running off casing head gas at some locations. The old "popping johnnies". I could hear a few of them and figure out direction to the road in or a lease. I was maybe 12 and alone for hours. They would call that child abuse today.

THIS

Posted by: Infidel at August 06, 2016 07:05 AM (7iTro)

668 The alphabet-is-the-root-of-sexism-rape-and-patriarchy crap is just part of postmodern pseudo-intellectualism's "Mad Libs"ing of academic writing. The author of such a piece does not believe such a thing in any way, and it is prima facie preposterous and subcutaneously preposterous. But the author has an academic post as an intellectual, and has to produce something to justify the money she (or he, or xer, or flxmt) bleeds the taxpayers of.

So the humanities side of academia plays Mad Libs with the world of culture and the natural world. A Mad Lib exists with the blanks to be filled in: "___________ (noun) is the cause of patriarchy." "Rape is immanentized by the intersectionality of __________ (aspect of noun) and ___________ (race/gender/queerness/class--select one)." "As ___________ (current female left-wing pop star) showed in her _____________ (most recent tour name) tour,..."

So, WTF. Alphabet, glaciers, vector graphics... It really doesn't matter. It's kind of like the stream of "The Zen of X" books that started in the 1970s and has (one hopes) finally ended. The point wasn't that Zen Buddhism actually intrinsically illuminated or aided in Winnie the Pooh, guitar, tennis, or road paving. The point was to publish a superficial book that might make some money. Okay, there the comparison breaks down. In academia, the point is to look smart to fellow academic dimwits and to continue sucking the taxpayers dry and not have to work a real job.

But it will be Berry Berry as well when done.

712 Good morning everyone! Well, did anyone besides me find it ironic that a country who's economy is largely funded by petro dollars was a) so pathetically mismanaged that the venues and infrastructure for the games were almost incomplete and b) preaching to us about glowbull enwarmening using stats and 'facts' that are demonstrably false?

Fuck those guys in particular.

Every time we go in there, they are both distinctly empty.

Nice facilities. Nice selections.
No customers.

At least now they will have additional parking for all the Mid's to park their BMWs, instead of using the lower lot at Hospital Point.

Where would we vent our frustrations at improper spelling and gramma?

Heh. At my last job, the in-house IT guy, after the inevitable"didja turn it off and back on again" would say "file an IT ticket." That went to the IT department at the main office, which was not our office.

Me: "But why would I file a ticket when you're the in-house IT guy and you and I are both standing right here WITHIN EYESHOT OF MY F*CKING COMPUTER? Couldn't you just, you know, look at it right now?????"

Him: "Uh, I have a video conference (runs into office and closes door."
