Clint Eastwood: Trump is Taking on The "Pussy Generation"

I don't think he likes Trump all that much, but this much he likes.

ESQ: Your characters have become touchstones in the culture, whether it's Reagan invoking "Make my day" or now Trump … I swear he's even practiced your scowl.

CE: Maybe. But he's onto something, because secretly everybody's getting tired of political correctness, kissing up. That's the kiss-ass generation we're in right now. We're really in a pussy generation. Everybody's walking on eggshells. We see people accusing people of being racist and all kinds of stuff. When I grew up, those things weren't called racist. And then when I did Gran Torino, even my associate said, "This is a really good script, but it's politically incorrect." And I said, "Good. Let me read it tonight." The next morning, I came in and I threw it on his desk and I said, "We're starting this immediately."

ESQ: What is the "pussy generation"?

CE: All these people that say, "Oh, you can't do that, and you can't do this, and you can't say that." I guess it's just the times.

ESQ: What do you think Trump is onto?

CE: What Trump is onto is he's just saying what's on his mind. And sometimes it's not so good. And sometimes it's … I mean, I can understand where he's coming from, but I don't always agree with it.

ESQ: So you're not endorsing him?

CE: I haven't endorsed anybody. I haven't talked to Trump. I haven't talked to anybody. You know, he's a racist now because he's talked about this judge. And yeah, it's a dumb thing to say. I mean, to predicate your opinion on the fact that the guy was born to Mexican parents or something. He's said a lot of dumb things. So have all of them. Both sides. But everybody—the press and everybody's going, "Oh, well, that's racist," and they're making a big hoodoo out of it. Just fucking get over it. It's a sad time in history.

...

ESQ: What do you think of Hillary?

CE: What about her? I mean, it's a tough voice to listen to for four years. It could be a tough one. If she's just gonna follow what we've been doing, then I wouldn't be for her.

ESQ: But if the choice is between her and Trump, what do you do?

CE: That's a tough one, isn't it? I'd have to go for Trump … you know, 'cause she's declared that she's gonna follow in Obama's footsteps. There's been just too much funny business on both sides of the aisle. She's made a lot of dough out of being a politician. I gave up dough to be a politician. I'm sure that Ronald Reagan gave up dough to be a politician.

In between those parts he discusses the Empty Chair bit he did at the 2012 convention.

Meanwhile, Bret Easton Ellis, the bad boy young novelist of the 1980s, has similar thoughts on his podcast.

The podcast is mainly focused on film, and the issue of social media and modern journalistic discourse bleeds into this area as it has had an unquestionable effect on artistic output in the past couple of years. On a previous episode, guest and Bored To Death creator Jonathan Ames confessed to having recently pulled out of writing an article for a publication simply because he feared the often overwhelming online backlash writers now face.

In the latest instalment but one, ahead of a very interesting, not-unrelated interview with The Invitation director Karyn Kusama which I implore you to listen to, Bret let rip with an opening monologue calling out the "authoritarian language police", with "your strict set of little rules and manufactured outrage, demanding apologies from every sandwich or salad you didn't like".

The American Psycho author would probably be the first to admit that he went a little too far at times, and has previously confessed to delighting in stoking controversy and acting the contrarian on Twitter, but there's some incredibly cogent stuff in there about the paradoxically fascist aspect to the 'this is the only opinion you are allowed to hold' tacit rules of leftist social media.

The podcast is here.

I don't think half of this party gets how sick the other half of us are of this shit. Half of the party is still trying to imitate the left, and set up their own lists of Things You Cannot Say, or trying to rescue the "good parts" of political correctness.

And there are indeed some good parts. But very few. And a lot of the Political Correctness regime seems to be being saved to save just those few defensible parts of it.

This is a major factor in the class-based schism in the GOP: One class, which never had much truck with the leftist-promulgated/college-inculcated speech codes, is completely against this bullshit, and the college educated folk are trying to rescue a Decent Speech Code out of he horrorshow of the left's speech codes.

I'm not sure which side is right. I do know that the college crowd seems determined to rescue far too much of this nonsense; witness the sudden fiction that you're now not allowed to insult a parent who lost his son twelve years ago after he just insulted you.

At some point, politeness seems to just be a polite euphemism for hectoring, harassing speech control.

Speech policing is just another form of the leftists' favorite method of politicking -- rent seeking. And the rent they seek is your deference and your acceptance of their higher-caste status.

And that's huge. It has huge impacts. Crap like that is why Sarah Palin can be called a Temptress Whore but if you make one joke about the "hero" Sandra Fluke, you get boycotted.

Once you accept the (now nakedly stated) premise that some people simply have greater Social Privileges than others, that's the ball game -- you have now accepted that this is a caste-based society, and the castes have a heirarchy of priority of rights.

And guess where you fall in that heirarchy?

Spoiler alert: Not near the top.

4 Compare and contrast the pussy generation with this excerpt from my best friend's grandfather's obit (he passed on Monday):

"After
graduating from high school in 1941, he attended David Lipscomb College
and volunteered and enlisted in the Army Artillery December 8, 1942.
On his 21st birthday, March 16, 1945, was spent in the heat of battle at
the Remagen Bridgehead. He graduated from Peabody College of
Vanderbilt University with a B.S. degree in history and economics June,
1948."

He was the gunner on a quad-mount .50 halftrack. After college he was farmer for the rest of his life.

i understand that, but what defines "What is Smart to Say" is how much the leftists have created speech codes in a particular area. And while one can knock Trump for having a poor grasp of risk vs. reward, it would not kill the movement to also push back on the Closing of the American Mind, rather than using the left's speechcrime regime simply because it is a handy weapon of opportunity.

31 I always did like Clint Eastwood as an actor. He is Definitely NOT a pussy.

I recently attended an estate sale held by the widow. She was selling her late husbands tools and things. I didn't try to finagle her down in price because things were priced reasonable.

Anyway to the point, there was a picture on the wall in his shop of Clint Eastwood from one of the spaghetti westerns.

I asked how much it was and she told me Clint Eastwood was one of her late husbands favorite actors. She told me just to take it for free and her husband would enjoy someone hanging that up in their shop.

So ole Clint now looks down diligently on the reloading presses, drill presses , saws and such and keeps a weather eye on things for me.

I like to think that ladies husband is somewhere smiling about that.

No argument, but that's where the smart bit comes in. Trump does exactly what they've set him up to do and that isn't smart. He has to realize that the situation is Kobayashi Maru. Unless he changes the rules and does something different than what is planned for, he, and we, lose.

This needs to be done, but its going to require some serious thought and strategy. Simply being an impolite, boorish bully allows the left to increase their control over what is and isn't acceptable.

A real pushback is going to require time and determination. Opponents of PC are going to need to create or take over media and educational institutions. The Closing of the American Mind took decades to achieve, and it will likely take as long to overturn.

Again, shouting offensive things achieves nothing. It alienates supporters you need.

It is also vital that we draw a line between what is PC and what is common decency. Conservatives need to stand for free speech and the free exchange of ideas. They do not need to stand for rudeness and cruelty (although they need to make it clear that such speech is permissible, just undesirable). This is a difficult distinction, because both sides of the debate tend to jumble up the two concepts.

57 A lot of this goes back to the working class vales vs. middle/upper middle class values Ace has discussed more than once. (although there are a lot of upper/middle folks that still hold working class values, or instinctively take to those values)

and of course that reminds us that class in America is more fluid than in the rest of the world.

From my perspective, working class values are MUCH closer to the American ideal than u/m class values are. Working class values (again, imho) reinforce traditional gender roles, as well, which I think is more realistic in general, if not suited to every individual.

Then take into consideration that the pluralistic part of the upper class view is globalist and hostile to the interests of the working class ( and to the middle class, too, if they would take the 3 or 4 hours of honest research to see it). On top of that, there is a general nanny-state worldview in the uppers. It's too bad that the m-class tends to suck up to u-class pretensions, especially when info consumption is involved.

The working class is tired of being treated like a pussy by the upper class; the upper class doesn't care what the working class wants, and wont until they get a good punch in the mouth from the working class, which they wont even admit is a possibility. The middle class is afraid of rocking the boat and losing the next mortgage payment.

Too many moving parts and possibility of vote fraud/rigged system nonsense for me to guess what happens next. There is very much a part of me that wants the upper class punched in the mouth repeatedly, though.

--------------

I would agree. I don't like the apologies, because there is generally nothing to apologize for except to appease the PC crowd. If you have truly offended, you should apologize - usually that is to the one person you truly offended and in private. If its to a group, its generally manufactured outrage.

I think the Khan issue illustrates this well. Trump should feel free to go after Khan. He injected himself into the political arena. But there is a fine line that we all think he did cross. Its a difficult needle to thread. Trump is showing that you can at least say certain things and it isn't political suicide.

67 Ask any of Romney's primary opponents how polite he was. With whom he was polite and whom he was not tells you a lot about him.

Who Romney was or is character wise is not the point. The point is he was a loser, because he lost.

I would not want to lose because we went easy on Hillary or the dems. Take a blowtorch to them and if we lose then, so be it.

68 In consideration of hash tag campaigns, twitter wars, political rallies, and assorted Trumpisms, the following consists of the entirety of U.S. Grant's personal campaign for President in 1868 and only related political utterance from the date of his nomination to election:

"Washington, D.C., May 29, 1868
General Joseph R. Hawley, President National Union Republican Convention:

In formally accepting the nomination of the National Union Republican convention of the 21st of May instant, it seems proper that some statement of views beyond the mere acceptance of the nomination should be expressed.

The proceedings of the convention were marked with wisdom, moderation, and patriotism, and I believe express the feelings of the great mass of those
who sustained the country through its recent trials. I endorse their resolutions.

If elected to the office of the President of the United States, it will be my endeavor to administer all the laws in good faith, with economy, and with the view of giving peace, quiet, and protection everywhere. In times like the present it is impossible, or at least eminently improper, to lay down a policy to be adhered to, right or wrong. Through an administration of four years, new political issues, not foreseen, are constantly arising, the views of the public on old ones are constantly changing, and a purely administrative officer should always be left free to execute the will of the people. I always have respected that will, and always shall. Peace and universal prosperity, its sequence, with economy of administration, will
lighten the burden of taxation, while it constantly reduces the national debt.

Let us have peace."

Trump really should not respond. He needs a surrogate, probably Pence, to do it. This race would be hands down a win if the GOP got out of the way.

88 64 Yes, the political correctness thing alone is reason enough for me to vote for Trump. This absolutely has to be pushed back against. We have ceded too much ground to the Left already. PC is nothing less than thought control. What good does it do to think certain thoughts if you're forbidden to express them, or worse, punished for expressing them?
Posted by: rickl at August 03, 2016 06:22 PM (sdi6R)

I'm repeating myself here, but its a vital point. Trump does not care about pushing back against PC. When faced with a question that does not concern him directly, he reverts to the PC answer. Witness his response on Geller, Scalia, the Kentucky clerk, and the NC bathroom laws.

One of the last thing Trump cares about is the rejuvenation of public debate.

What Trump does care about is his own right to be rude. He does not challenge the institutions pushing PC. The net result of the Trump run is going to be increased control by those seeking to stymie debate in the name of PC.

Anyone who has any common sense however, should move to the parts of America that are defensible, organize and begin planning for a new nation of the future. The current edifice has to come crashing down before common sense can re-establish itself.

110 Fuck this college-educated vs. non-college-educated bullshit. I have more degrees than a god damned thermometer, and I'm sick of it.

The real divide is between the side that still has men and the one that has biological males*.

It's between the side where women are free to be motherly and/or career-oriented and the one that thinks they should be railing against the patriarchy regardless of the emptiness and loneliness in their lives.

It's between the side where women like men who are men and the one where the women hate men but tolerate biological males.

It's between the side that knows many of us come from fucked up backgrounds but need to get over it and soldier on and the one that wants to treat them like special snowflakes, prepping them for a world that doesn't exist outside of government or academia.

It's between the pussy generation, as Mr. Eastwood properly named them, and those of us who were raised and/or have learned better. Someone lands a blow on real guys and gals from time to time, but pussies live every day in fear.

139 Trump needs to learn to do magnanimity. To stay above frays.

After Khan attacked him, Trump should have simply said,

"We Republicans had a bereaved mother speak at our convention. Democrats went after her viciously. One liberal claimed she should be beaten to death. It was horrific stuff they said. I believe that, even if you disagree with them, anyone who has lost a child in that way deserves to be heard out in respectful silence. That's the privilege I extend to the Khan family, too. I won't comment further on this matter."

Trump is currently losing.

The people who might be able to meaningfully dent PC are on the run, being hammered by Trump and his establishment backers. A Tea Party guy and member of the HFC lost a primary fight to an establishment favorite last night. The GOPe elite are preparing to pick off other HFC guys. Lee and Cruz are loathed and detested because they denied Trump.

The fight against PC is not on the march. Its worse off then it was a year ago.

Their is a huge point Trump supporters miss.

When you respond to everything in the same way, that response loses any impact. If you punch out at any slight, it becomes mundane. Trump responds with much the same flailing to Cruz, Clinton, Kahn, the judge, Kelly, etc. Even with slight variations in volume or intensity, it becomes mundane.

If someone like Romney, known for being even tempered, had launched a (more coherent) Trump-like assault on someone like Clinton, it would have had a far greater impact.

As the Horde knows, I am a tiny bit fond of profanity. You know what else? I try not even to say damn in front of my parents because they don't like it. I abide by that out of respect for my parents. But I will not and should not be demanded to show respect to those who deny the very possibility of my existence. No. Will not happen.

Trump evidently does not and so any threat to the gravy train will be stopped by every means necessary.

No better analogy is Pre-WWII Britain making fun of Churchill as a lunatic, bombastic fool, jerk, rude, etc. Remember Gallipoli they said! The Nazis are just wanting back their German homeland after the raw deal they got at Versailles.

Churchill, one of the few men to actually read Mein Kampf in Britain, was roundly hated and renounced by his fellow Britains. By the mid-1930s he started to see the hand writing on the wall and warned of the Nazis...his countrymen on the other hand said that was crossing a red line!

Only when the Nazi knife was at Britain's neck did they beg him to save their country, then when the war was won they dumped him again. Now they are infested with Islam. Lesson obviously not learned...there or here.

And there are indeed some good parts. But very few. And a lot of the Political Correctness regime seems to be being saved to save just those few defensible parts of it."

---------

^^This times a billion! ^^

Although I would argue that the good parts of political correctness are such basic parts of decency that being PC is not required to keep them as cultural requirements.

Today, at this point in time, ANY ONE's life can be ruined by being simply accused of racism, homophobia, hostile to Islam, or any other thing the Left deems horrible. Nothing need be proven for you to be cast into the realm of outcast--you just need to be accused and wham, you are guilty." It's why BLM is going to town because folks do not want to be branded as racist for opposing them.

215 I think Eastwood pretty much nailed it but I am not willing to shrug it off as a sign of the times.

Spend two minutes anywhere where "young adults" hang out or glance at any social media and you'll see that basic politeness, decency, and even alleged political correctness no longer exist. People are vile. The same girl demanding safe spaces and respect for their virtue are sending around naked selfies and posting videos of themselves having sex.

It's no different than the mandate that no one ever speak "the N-word", yet it is in countless rap songs. Don't ever call someone a fag... but watch fags scream it at parades. "Political correctness" is nothing more than an excuse to vilify someone. It a tool in the left's arsenal to silence dissent.

Equally bad, IMO, are the Trump supporters who go apeshit if anyone states the glaringly obvious:Trump says a lot of really, really dumb shit.

Saying something dumb illustrates a persons cognitive limitations. It does not make someone a racist.

Now speaking at a HS in CO, drawing tens of maybe hundreds. (This is no joke, in a previous "rally" at a HS she had high school kids, who don't vote, holding up her signs). Okay! Throw in the white towel of defeat!

And, at quick glance of headlines, all MSM libtards are peeing their pants in anticipation of Mr. Trump dropping out and, wringing hands, "Who will replace him??? How does dis werk?"

Meanwhile, while Rome burns, Nero has his nose picked by his muscular wife. Terror attack levels very high in Europe and Rio, and people are fretting about Mr. Trump dropping out and other squealing. Cue dueling banjos playing in Deliverance or the world's smallest violin playing a dirge. bah. pfft. Stop falling for the bs. Long way til November when the only poll that matters is your vote. I agree with that sentiment, but I feel this misses the larger issue.

Look at the process: SJWs wet their pants over this or that. Then Amazon or some college administrator or some sports team or some city council or some megacorporation *acts* on it. The last part is the problem. I don't give a shit if some SJW twerp gets apoplexy. The question is, *why* are these twerps being taken seriously all of a sudden? They have always existed.

Shilling for illegals again, after the Tea Party resurrected them to fight BarkyCare (which they refused to do) just got some top leadership tossed out of the House. Standing up for our national sovereignty just won Trump the primary by miles ... but Fox (which shills for illegals and the Vichy GOP) claims that no one cares about illegals, so it must all be a fantasy.

At the fundraiser, the former president also reportedly said Islamic women should be welcomed in the U.S. to experience the benefits of a free society -- according to the Wall Street Journal, "so they can lead the charge for equality in the Middle East."

475 "Bush criticized recent trends"

W seems like a decent man but he was mostly captured by his family interests when in office. In the end GWB has no standing to criticize people who voted for him in the hope he would stop the murder of babies and shrink the size of the Federal Government. The most you can say is that he pulled back from opening the boarders when there was a public outcry. GWB had the money to build a fence and didn't. GWB had support to cut the size of Government and didn't. GWB left the military exposed in Iraq and Afghanistan thinking his replacement wouldn't sacrifice them.

477 The whole thing with Trump reminds me of this quote from Milton Friedman:

http://youtu.be/MEVI3bmN8TI

For a century or more, we have made the conditions such that it is politically profitable for the right people to do the wrong things, and maybe we should work on that changing that the other way around.
