Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

unnamed.png

Welcome to the AoS Pet Thread. Hope your Saturday is going well. Grab a beverage and your favorite toy. Sit, stay and relax.

Has anyone woken up from dozing off to find something missing from the kitchen? If you say no, you must be a newer pet owner or The Dog Whisperer who has trained their pet marvelously.

A Little of This, A Little of That

So I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that there are terrible people in the world. The good news is that there are wonderful people in the world. h/t CBD

An amazing rescue. What is more amazing is where it took place at.

Basement savers save more than basements

Meet The Pet Morons

zz ritabootoo.jpg

Today's first pet is Romeo. He is a therapy cat for Ritabootoo who happens to be a long time lurker and cancer survivor. Romeo certainly looks like a handsome sweet cat. Thank you for your patience.

zz creeper ace the cat.jpg

Say howdy to Ace the Cat. This cat came to Creeper's home as a feral kitty with its eyes infected shut. One eye was saved. Looks like it's enjoying one of it's 9 lives.

zzlisas cat .jpg

Our next feline visitor is Lisa's cat. She didn't send much information along about this kitty other than his name is Bootsie. According to Lisa she's been a long time lurker and first time poster.

zz dwagyak.jpg

Dwagyah submitted several cat photos. We chose this one as it was an interesting pose. However, we didn't get a name for this one. Maybe Dwagyah will fill us in today.

zz stella.jpg

Dave'sNotHere submitted this photo of Stella. She was a pup when this was taken. She recently crossed the rainbow bridge at age 12. Looks like an adorable puppy.

carmen the dog2.jpg

Closing up our entries this week is Carmen the Dog, lady of leisure. She looks horribly abused by the hands of Rihar. Terrible life for such a cute dog. We keed, we keed.

We are always looking for pet news, tips and photos. If you have some you would like to share please contact us at petmorons at gee mail dot com. We appreciate your paitence in getting your pet photos in the blog!! Thanks again.

1 Hello, pets.

Hey gang. Two quick hits. Next Thursday marks 10 years since we adopted our 2 kittehs. I will send some snaps for inclusion for next week.

Also, great channel on You Tube worthy of your time called Vet Ranch. These vets are based in Texas and are doing some great work rescuing many dogs and cats that otherwise would be euthanized. They also show them operating on them and it can be a bit grisly.

Also also, one of the vets there is big on firearms and has another channel called Demolition Ranch.

If you like guns and pets, this is for you.

6 I love seeing the Horde pets! Beautiful babies all!!

Our newf hurt his knee, so we are having to rearrange bedrooms, so he doesn't have to go up and down the far too many stairs in our house. He's happy, because he's being treated like the king he assumes he is.

It beats carrying his 150 pound butt around.

9 Also, we are lucky with this batch of dogs-not one of them is a counter cruiser. Our previous yellow lab, Leroy, though, he was ingenuous at finding food on the counter, in pantries, etc. For a long time, I blamed my kids for sneaking chips and shoving the bags under the sofa, and it turned out to be him. He wasn't sorry when I caught him.

13 I dropped a pot of pinto beans and ham on the floor one night in December. Hell of a mess, including moving the refrigerator to clean under it. I scooped them back into the pot and set it on the kitchen table to throw out the next morning. Forgot, went to work, came home, saw the pot, lid still on. Picked it up to take to the garbage and dump, it was empty. My big old Lab-Irish Setter cross had eaten the whole pot of beans and ham without knocking the lid off. She lay on the floor moaning for two days. Luckily, pinto beans do not cause gas in dogs.

15 Very nice group this week! My little kitty WeaselCat2 liked the sink as a kitten but haven't seen her in there much now that she's grown.

PET THREAD QUESTION: Is cat puke recyclable?

WeaslelWoman says no. I recently cleaned some cat throw-up with a white papertowel and tossed it into the recycling bin. Apparently, this was wrong. Very wrong. I allowed as how I didn't much give a shit either way, and she fished it out and put it into the regular trash can.

Posted by: Weasel at August 06, 2016 02:52 PM (Sfs6o)

16 My Dane is a total food thief. She has stolen so far when I have had my back turned a whole tray of biscuits, some blueberry cream cheese blintzes, a perfect grilled cheese sammich, and a ribeye steak. She isn't allowed in the kitchen anymore when I'm in there. I wonder if she hates her own dog food or if I'm not feeding her enough. She is drawn to smells and if I'm cooking her nose immediately starts twitching and she heads to the kitchen.

Yeah, normally teh kittehs REALLY hate getting tummy rubs. But there are exceptions. My aunt's old tomcat Petey LOVED to have his tummy rubbed. He'd flop down beside you on the sofa and flip over with his grapefruit-sized head (he was a BIG cat, close to 30 lbs. not fat, big.) on your knee and paw at your hand until you started the tummy rub.

22 Speaking of counter cruisers... friends with two Labs had food go missing. Knew the dogs were responsible because there was no one else there to do it. Upon arriving home one day, they happened to look through the window before opening the door, and saw the two Labs teaming up to -- I kid you not! -- open the fridge and remove a pot roast (in a glass dish!) to a spot on the floor. Where it was promptly consumed. Said if they had not seen it, they would never have believed it. And the glass dish was just fine for getting pulled from the fridge to the floor. Smart doggehs!

27 Our female maine coon, Meisha, got in a fight with something much bigger last night and lost. Probably a real coon or a coyote. Spent much of the night comforting her and trying to assess damage. She didn't sleep until this morning. She has a puncture down thru her nose that was causing some bleeding into her airway and some swelling around an eye that could be a similar problem.
Mrs IGN and IGN Jr2 have her at the vet right now for anti biotics and X-rays. No word has gotten back to me yet so I bury myself in my work.

Meanwhile the male Maine coon looked on all evening from the top of the clothes washer with only partial interest and no sympathy.

28 Yeah, you guys, such funny stories.Danes really are hilarious dogs. Exactly like Scooby Doo. Always begging for food and half brave/ half big chickens. They have wonderful personalities.

The most I'll give mine is the last bite of anything I eat that won't make her sick and let her lick the plate or bowl clean.
She will park herself in front of me sitting down, waiting patiently for that last bite. It's good discipline for her to learn to wait for a reward. Man, she would be a total dumpster diver/beggar dog if she was a stray.

30 i had a cat with front paws that looked like baseball mitts, like the hemingway cats.

mittie devoured two quail wishbones i had cleaned up and saved that were in my cup of miniature things. my collection has a 1" vintage mini pocketknife, a really old bullet that opens up and holds a teeny set of bone dice, 2 smaller-than-dimes real sandollars, some old barbed wire burrs and a couple of really old vials of gold and rubies.

haven't had any quail since to replace them.

33 So, I seem to live in bizarro world.

I wasn't happy with my former vet, so I went to a newer, better rated one closer to my house. Almost walking distance.

Well, my little kitty cat (who had breast cancer several years ago) has a heart murmur. After doing some tests, we have been referred to a cat cardiologist.

Yep. Cat Cardiologist.

So, I found something online called "Young At Heart For Cat Heart Disease" and I'm going to give it a try, at least for a month. Its' an herbal remedy that has high ratings. I'll probably see the doctor I got referred to, but want to wait until the cat has been on new herbal drops for about a month. Plus... one must save up for that sort of thing.

If that wasn't enough to freak out about, my central air died and had to be replaced; that happened today. Plus... city taxes at the end of the month! Estimated taxes next month!

/no wonder I just want to yell at people.

Of course everything IS recyclable, the great circle of life makes it so.

However, if the question is, does cat vomit belong in the recycle bin, the answer is it depends on the recycle nazis who run your local waste management services.

If the question is, is there an economic benefit to recycling cat vomit, of course the answer is no, don't be silly. Other than aluminum cans, NOTHING that gets recycled is economically beneficial, and most of what goes into recycle bins ends up in the same landfill as regular garbage and trash.

Before I moved to TX, we used to have a bunch of schnauzers as office dogs (4 of them, at one point). Anyway, on occasion I'd meet one of my partners at the off-leash beach in Santa Barbara when he'd walk the most active and rambunctious of them, Molly. Molly LOVED the beach, especially since she'd get to play with a bunch of other dogs in the surf.

One time we went out there and a guy had his two Leonbergers there, which are frickin' huge. Basically, imagine a good-natured, long-haired, barking horse. Molly zipped right on over fearlessly and the three of them started chasing each other around cheerfully for several minutes. You could tell that they were all having a great time, lots of wagging tails. Until the two Leons started coordinating their movements a bit. You could see Molly's expression change from "nyah, nyah. you can't catch me!" to "Holy shit, those are big fuckin' dogs!" Hilarious.

Our oldest kitteh, Sandy (15 y.o. this month) went in to the vet a couple of months ago for a checkup, and vet found she had a heart murmur. Additional tests showed she had hyperthyroidism, which can cause heart murmurs in cats.

Since she's been on thyroid med, the heart murmur is gone. However, hyperthyroid disease can also hide kidney problems, and at her last checkup she showed symptoms. Taking her back to the vet for more tests (after I deal with my own kinda serious health issues on Monday).

Thanks for your input Jane.

My cat has low potassium, so she's on a tablet that I crush up in the morning. Outside of that, her blood panels and kidney functions are good.

Good luck to both of you on Monday. And... although the cat health stuff isn't fun, it might be distracting you from your own issues. That in itself might be a good thing.

One of them, a schnauzer-mix named Olive, is completely devoted to Jane. (Jane is 104 pounds, Olive about 15 pounds). The other day was a million degrees out and Jane was standing on the creekside when Olive trotted over and settled down in the shady spot created by Jane's shadow. Jane stayed in place until Olive reached up and tried to lick her belly, at which point the chase was on.

71 We had a Weimaraner named Lexi when I was a teenager, and she used to counter surf like nobody's business. She ate (at different times): my birthday cake- chocolate, but it didn't bother her one bit, a huge pan of eggplant parm, the entire contents of the lower half of the fridge, and the butter dish, among other things. Yes, I said, the butter dish. It was actually the wooden bottom of a cake stand, and the oil had soaked into it, so the dog thought it was a treat. We never found so much as a splinter.

That dog was completely useless except for her entertainment value. She was like a celebrity actress: beautiful, but no brains. And if she ever got in trouble, she'd look guilty for about five seconds, then go back to being her usual destructive self. The stories I could tell...

76 When our cat Sandy was a kitten, she had a thing for leather shoestrings and cashmere. If my son or husband left a pair of boots or shoes out, they'd find the shoestrings gone.

I left a cashmere sweater on our bed while showering one morning, and came out and found her kneading and sucking a hole through the middle of the sweater. She also ate the leather straps off a favorite pair of red sandals.

She eventually gave up her fixation on leather and fine cashmere.

77 That dog in #1 pic the same one that had no idea what it was doing at the computer the other day? Funny dog.

Also, kitteh in the sink. I had an orange tiger years ago that loved to have someone just turn the faucet on just a drip worth. Like chasing a flashlight or similar with water drips to 'find out wth that was?', endlessly.

I'll have to dig up Sammy pictures one of these days. I suspect Sammy was a Russian blue. Alas, lost but certain she's found another good home. Funny one, that one.

85 Greetings, pet-owned Morons!

Latest fun pet report is about Merlin, the in-town cat.

Unlike the kitteh quartet at home, Merlin's only animal companion is Defender Doggie, when we bring Dog into town each day. Otherwise, he's by himself, as far as four-footers go.

See why he's the lonely in-town kitteh in Merlin's tale, April 9 Pet Thread:
http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=362563#c25113358

Merlin does get out now and then, but he rarely gets out of sight of the office front door. Lolls on the pavement, chews some grass.

There's a vet's a couple doors down, and we think partly because of them, there are occasional wild cats roaming around. Lately we've been seeing a black one, which looks pretty much just like Merlin except for Merlin's white socks.

Merlin has seen the stray, too, and we've seen Merlin race from one window to another to watch it go by.

Well, the other evening, Merlin got out and we didn't see him for a while. Then in the dim light, Milady saw a black glob she thought might be Merlin. Turns out it was Merlin and the stray black cat, hanging out close to one another. Stray ran off as Milady approached.

Daughter caught Merlin & stray hanging out together again last night. It's nice that Merlin has a kitteh buddy, but kinda sad it's not domesticated. Not that we need another cat at the office, but at least they get along.

Don't even know if it's another male, but I suspect not, else there'd be more quarreling. We'll see how the relationship goes.

That's my story for the day. Now to go check the post pix & comments.

ima asshole about recyling: i put almost ALL of our trash in the recycling bin, to include used kleenex, empty meat trays (un-rinsed) etc.

i figure it gives the illegal aliens who have to sort it something to look forward to every week when our truck pulls in.

i take all the valuable stuff, aluminum, deposit drink bottles, etc, to the center myself, and keep the $$, instead of letting the city or the homeless have it.

107 One advantage of toy poodles is they couldn't reach the counter or table tops, although they REALLY wanted to. They quickly learned to stand where I was most likely to drop something edible when cooking.

We did have a near miss one time with one of our miniature poodles. The side board was right against the stairs. Normally this didn't matter since we never had food on top, just a tea service and such. But it was Thanksgiving and the turkey and all the side dishes were on the side board for easy serving. One of the pups was coming downstairs, caught a whiff of all the goodies and realized he could walk through the bannister pieces right onto the board. I'm sure he thought "How convenient and considerate!"

It was just luck that I walked by as he got his front paws onto the side board. I doubt he could have eaten all of it, being a miniature, but he would have had a grand time trying.

119 Speaking of counter cruisers...

After ten or so years living with a Sheltie, I was spoiled and dead to reality. We added a baby German Shepherd to our crew. A few months later, all of my wooden spoons were in splinters because I'd laid them down on the stove without thinking. We had to push the cat food back from the edge of the counter and open the silverware drawer half way in an attempt to keep the SGD out of the cat's food. She nailed a good third of a Hormel Cure 81 ham and one time ate nearly an entire package of Oreos. (Either GSDs are big enough that chocolate doesn't bother them as much as it does smaller dogs or there's less chocolate in Oreos than one would think.) We were constantly saying something that roughly went like this: "How come we're out of bread? I just bought a loaf." or "Thanks for eating all the chips, rat fink!"

-----------

A long time ago, the Femme du Jour had a retired Greyhound. Sweet dog. The lady in question had baked a pound cake and left it on the kitchen counter covered with a dishcloth while we went out for a while.

Returning, she were going to have some of the cake, which was still sitting on the counter, still covered. When she removed the cloth, the center of the cake had been eaten out.

I mean, it was if the dog figured we wouldn't notice as long as the cover wasn't disturbed. It was pretty funny.

But I'm pretty impressed that your lady friend's dog managed to eat out the center of a cake without disturbing the cover- or that it thought to do that in the first place. They can be so crafty; imagine if they had opposable thumbs.

Our dog kind of does that on his warming drawer raids. (I installed a hook latch on it, but half the time I forget to latch it) Instead of hauling off the pan of cornbread or whatever, he'll stand on his tiptoes and eat as much as he can, quietly, until he hears someone coming back to the kitchen, upon which he melts away to another room to savor my screams of outrage.

Then we go, "ok the rest of the pan is still good, right? Right? Mm, nah, he probably left snot or slobber on the rest of it. Toss".

136 Hi all!

Nice group of pets today (except for those darn cats! j/k).

Good news. Our Aussie, Buckley has made a full recovery from his hind end paralysis that came on suddenly about three weeks ago. As if it never happened. Whew!

He is partial to the butter dish if we leave it too close to the edge of the counter. In related news he has a very shiny coat. He did scarf a burger off the counter once. We've pretty well trained him to not reach up onto the kitchen counters, but he is sometimes sorely tempted.

137 Boots, Lisa's cat looks very much much like the dear feral cat rescue we have who seems happy in her new home inside with us. The cat in the sink and the dalmatian are adorable and the picture of Carmen made me laugh. It always makes me feel good to see all the animal photos.

138 One more then I'll shut up. When my dog was younger he was even worse for stealing food, which is hard to imagine. One time he took an unopened can of wasabi flavor Blue diamond almonds, opened it and ate everything in it. Next day on our walk he pooped out the entire contents of the can, and each almond was intact.

He also would eat our son's Legos, and once I saw a little Lego man looking up at me in one of the poops.

139 Lol, all the dog counter surfing stories are like "I

minutes..."

My stories are all like that too, but at least my dog doesn't eat spoons.

Well, just for the sake of variety, I'll share one more (I have a nearly endless supply of stories about Lexi, only some of them to do with counter surfing). She knew how to open the fridge, and the first time she did it, she managed to eat a few different things without making an obvious mess. My brother (16 years old at the time and with an appetite to match) got in trouble because Mom thought he had eaten the things that were missing. Finally, we figured out that it was the dog's fault and put a weight in front of the fridge door. I'm not talking about a ten pound dumbbell, either. It's a cast iron horse head that you screw onto the top of a hitching post. It weighs a good 40 pounds, but anything lighter wouldn't have stopped the dog.
Told you guys I have an endless supply of Lexi stories. They're all funny now, but not so much back then.

140 Regarding food thieves, my little black cat goes bonkers for beef jerky. I had a few pieces on a plate on one occasion and--in less than one second--she jumped onto the table, snatched a piece, and jumped down. The only thing that foiled her cunning plan was that she didn't take off running. "Gimme that!"

Someone else asked and I'm asking too, how do you get a dog to stop the counter surfing? I don't deal with mousetraps so that's not an option.

I can't speak for other dogs, but Buckley responds really well to a sharp "No!" or a verbal sound like a game show buzzer if he even looks like he's thinking about it. That's also the sound I use when we're walking with the long leash (he will walk 30' out in front without tension on the leash if I 'buzz' him every so often). Plus he usually hangs pretty close to us when we're around, so we monitor pretty closely, if he disappears from the room we're in we can nip him in the bud in the kitchen. Other than that we just keep all the food out of reach.

152 Since I've bored you all to death with dog stories, let's move on to chickens, specifically my mom's scheme to raise chickens in the house. Yet another tale from my sordid youth...
A raccoon killed most of our chickens, including a hen that was sitting on some eggs. Mom heard peeping from inside two of the eggs, and hatched out two chicks, but since they were too small to live with the adult birds, she fixed up a cage for them in the house. This was fine when they were small, but then they got bigger and she started letting them run around freely in the house. Apparently this was acceptable because we'd had a house rabbit at one point, so somehow chickens were in the same class.
This went on for a couple of months, during which time the chickens learned to perch on Mom's shoulders and she learned to use them as alarm clocks. Not the way you'd think, either; if my brother or I wouldn't get out of bed, she'd open our bedroom doors, toss a half-grown chicken inside, and shut the door, leaving us scrambling to get the noisy little bastards out before they pooped on our things.
Finally, the scheme ended when we went on vacation. I think Mom had a plan to smuggle them in our suitcases, but Dad insisted she put them in with the other birds. Both chickens adjusted just fine and lived for five or six years afterwards, leaving me with yet another ridiculous pet story with which to regale the Morons.

163 Back when we were po', my husband was working 60+ hours a week trying (and not especially succeeding) to make his mobile car repair business work. One day he was home for lunch and had made a sandwich for himself using literally the last bread and meat we had in the house. He was just sitting down to eat when the business phone rang and he had to take a customer call in the next room. When he got back -- sandwich was gone. It took some heavy lobbying by me to keep El Toro in the family after that.

That happened in the early days, before we understood the depth of Toro's addiction to bread. I've lost count of the number of bags of bread he's snatched off the counter. You'd think he'd explode after eating a whole loaf of bread, but so far, it hasn't happened.
