I've worked with a lot of Muslims over the years and always heard disgust and condemnation of Islamic terrorism. Not all of them were completely Westernized either - some still had wife in very traditional garb, praying 5 times a day - but they were all pretty moderate.

I understand your point but my issue is that they are asking us to believe that the "vast majority" of muslims are peaceful. That is simply not enough for me personally. I remember the muslims dancing in the street after 9/11 around the world. These people have probably never lifted a sword, gun, or in any way acted in a terroristic fashion. It all comes down to the concept of "The Noble Savage," as so brilliantly explained by Steven Pinker: At the core, the deepest core, of the modern leftist worldview is the notion that primitivism is good and civilization is bad, so that leftists will ALWAYS defend, glorify and exculpate any demographic whom the leftists deem to be on "The Noble Savage Spectrum," and conversely attack, insult and delegitimize everything on "The Civilization Spectrum."
The last 15 years or so has been devoted to clarifying the division between the two spectra, and what the left calls "intersectionalism" (or "identity politics" in the right's lingo) is a way of arraying every imaginable minority grouping into The Noble Savage Spectrum, while consigning white, male, cisgendered, Christian, American conservatives as the sole category NOT on the Noble Savage Spectrum.
Or course this attitude by the left is inherently patronizing, demeaning, racist and insulting, but that's a different story.
Anyway, back tot he point:
The left has now permanently assigned "Muslims" to the Noble Savage Spectrum, and in that role all their actions must be glorified and romanticized as inherently superior to the actions of the non-Noble Savages.. Always. Always. Always.
The problem is that the Noble Savages, of every type, but especially Muslims, constantly "misbehave" and don't conform to the image that the left has constructed of them. So the left goes to extreme lengths -- any lengths, beyond are reasonability and logic -- to defend, explain away and exculpate this most problematic of the Noble Savages.
They go to these lengths because if ANY Noble Savage group proves to NOT actually be noble, then their entire leftist worldview collapses. So each and every instance of misbehavior MUST be covered up or defended.
The problem for the left is that of all the groups demeaned and insulted by the left's taxonomy of them, the Muslims are the least willing to play along. Their misbehavior is so extreme that it exposes the fatal flaw in the entire Noble Savage concept.
I truly believe that this is the very crucible in which leftism will be destroyed: their continued attempts to run interference for Islam. It is the "exception" that is bigger than the rule itself.

Except Francis does not rule over Catholics. The Pope's authority is over matters of theological doctrine and even then only when he speaks ex cathera, which happens, like 1 or 2 times a century. Catholics do not have to agree with his political opinions or every passing brain fart he has. It's understandable that many non-Catholics don't get that, because Catholics are confused on the subject as well. Religious education, like the secular variety, ain't what it used to be.

Jacques Barzun identified primitivism as one of the core concepts of Western Civ. It goes back to the days of Rousseau, whose works helped inspire the French Revolution. "Natural" or primitive man is superior to educated, artificial types because he's in touch with his all important feeeeelllllings and free of hang-ups and Christian guilt about sex. The natural man fetish idealized not only all non-Western cultures but the hippie-ish "let's get back to nature" ethos of groups ranging from 19th century communes to present day Whole Foods shoppers.

Eh. You're talking about over a billion and a half people. Big tent, big differences in what being a Muslim means to them.
As an analogy, think of Nancy Pelosi. She considers herself a Catholic, she (more or less) raised her kids in the Church, and attends services a few times a year.
But she doesn't put any stock in the Bible, much less in Church teaching. She's what I would call a "cultural Catholic."
A lot of self-called Muslims, especially in the West, fall into that category. They take the calls for jihad in the Koran and Hadiths about as seriously as Pelosi takes Church doctrine on abortion.
