Quote of the Day I - Mental Virus Edition

Socialism sounds great. It has always sounded great. And it will probably always continue to sound great. It is only when you go beyond rhetoric, and start looking at hard facts, that socialism turns out to be a big disappointment, if not a disaster.

-- Thomas Sowell

Quote of the Day II

Godzilla fails by trying to get too flashy, attempting a spinning tail shot rather than just going for a run of the mill kick. He kicked over enough buildings in Japan over the years...is that not good enough for soccer? This new Godzilla really needs to get back to his roots.

Why Bernie Sanders Never Had A Chance

The fix for Hillary may have been in as far back as 2008.

Hillary never stopped wanting to be president. She was just was going to have to wait for eight years. But how could she take the steps necessary and maneuver so she wouldn't be faced with another loss in the primary in 2016? Well, the strategic thing would be to have a plant become the head of the DNC so that if a thumb on the scale had to take place, she'd at least own the thumb. That's where Barack Obama and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz come in.

And if you follow the timeline and movement of the pieces, it seems pretty clear that everything was structured (and powered by quid pro quo) to guarantee that the Dowager Queen of Chautauqua would never be embarrassed by a primary loss again.

When you look back at this chain of events, post-DNC hacking scandal, it sure is a lot easier to understand why there was a thumb, a fist, hell, a side of beef, on the scale against Bernie Sanders and his supports in the 2016 primary cycle.

Bernie voters, you sad saps, you never had a chance. Now, we can reasonably suspect that the chance you didn't have goes back eight years. We can also deduce that the Democratic Party is a top-down organization, not a grassroots organization. They claim to be, of course, but the power at the top has nothing to do with the will of the people in its base. It's a club where only the opinions of a couple of members count.

End Stages of Socialism: Venezuela's Socialist Government Gives Itself the Power To Require Forced Farm Labor

Here is your shovel comrade.

"A new decree establishing that any employee in Venezuela can be effectively made to work in the country's fields as a way to fight the current food crisis is unlawful and effectively amounts to forced labor," Amnesty International said in a statement released on Thursday.

President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree at the end of last week that gives powers to the labor ministry to order "all workers from the public and private sector with enough physical capabilities and technical know-how" to join a government drive aimed at increasing food production.

They can be required to work in the agricultural sector for a 60-day period that can be extended for another 60 days "if the circumstances require it."

WaPo: Seattle's Minimum-Wage Hike Did Nothing For Workers

But people got to feel good about themselves for a while so it wasn't all wasted. </sarc>

Ed of Hot Air points out that this was all known and foreseeable:

Here's the main point of this sad story from Seattle. Minimum wage increases do not increase buying power - not in the long run, because prices reset to counter the increased costs and wipe out any theoretical gains for low-income workers. As this study shows, it doesn't increase buying power in the short run either for workers that supposedly should benefit from the policy. Even the best-case scenario only produces a bump high enough to get an extra latté a week from Starbucks - until Starbucks has to raise its prices, or force longer wait times with smaller staffs, which is a cost of another kind.

The continual push for minimum-wage hikes flies in the face of all evidence, and of all results. If this policy were effective, we wouldn't need to keep raising the level of pay; we would have solved poverty decades ago. It's wishcasting at best, and it's destructive political pandering at worst - and as we see in Seattle, usually it's the worst.

The Story of Jonathon Hernandez

Jonathon Hernandez was an up and coming football coach working his way up the gridiron ladder. But when his younger brother, Aaron, was convicted of murder, Jonathon lost everything since the last name Hernandez was now radioactive in football circles. Here he reflects on why his brother went bad and what it's like to lose your career and have to start completely over.

Sesame Street Fires Three Long Time Characters

All had been on the show for 40+ years.

Bob McGrath (Bob), Emilio Delgado (Luis) and Roscoe Orman (Gordon) all believed they'd been let go from the show, until an outpouring of love from fans put the pressure on. Sesame Workshop - the production company that produces the iconic children's show - seems to be pulling back from a decision not to create any more segments with the characters.

But now the show seems to be walking back the firing after an outcry from the public. CTW is blaming HBO for the decision.

Neo-Hippies Need Your Money So They Can Live Their Neo-Hippie Lifestyle in a More Pleasant Location

The Allens are a British family of four who practice what they call off-grid parenting which consists of co-sleeping, extended breast-feeding, home-schooling, "lotus birthing" while rejecting vaccines, modern medicine, bedtimes, mealtimes, and shoes. Along with a whole lot of other new-agey, neo-hippie shit. Note that off-grid does not mean off-benefits.

Anyway they now want people like you to give them $100,000 so they can move to Costa Rica and more fully live their lifestyle. I'll let Lex of WWTDD provide the snark:

As with all things British, this story begins with an unpleasant looking chick with shitty teeth saying nonsensical things with complete confidence. Mom Allen is going to breast feed her kids until they leave for the school they won't be attending because they'll only be home schooling. Since they won't vaccinate, that matter has already been decided. The family uses only home-grown medicines which conveniently consist of mom's breast milk. Dried baby placentas are always on hand should somebody need a pick me up...The kids don't wear shoes and often get comments from intrusive neighbors about things like, "You know there's broken glass on the sidewalk, right?". It's unclear how the family sustains itself outside of all sleeping together in the same room and dining on mom's tit porridge. You couldn't go wrong betting on government assistance, the common currency of those committed to natural living.

Study: Astronauts Who Reach Deep Space 'Far More Likely To Die From Heart Disease'

Ionizing radiation like that found in space is linked to damage to the heart and arteries.

Astronauts who venture into deep space appear to be much more likely to die from heart disease, according to a new study. In another sign that leaving planet Earth is fraught with danger and a potential blow to hopes of establishing a colony on Mars, researchers discovered deep space radiation appears to damage the body's cardiovascular system. They reported that three out of the seven dead Apollo astronauts died as a result of a cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack or stroke. Although the numbers are small, that rate of 43 percent is four to five times higher than found among astronauts who flew in low Earth orbit or who did not actually go into space, according to a paper in the journal Scientific Reports. In an attempt to test whether the higher numbers of cardiovascular deaths were simply a statistical blip or a genuine sign of the effect of traveling into deep space, the scientists exposed mice to the same type of radiation that the astronauts would have experienced. After six months, which is the equivalent of 20 human years, the mice showed damage to arteries that is known to lead to the development of cardiovascular disease in humans.

I don't know how it will pan-out in the near future when the paper crash happens, but the bright ones of the past 40 years or so of state-run lotteries invest it as their principal and only spend the return/interest.

44 Okay, here we go:

Not long ago, a very close family friend died. I say 'family friend' but he was more my mother's friend than my step-father's. My bio-father, I never met, and know nothing about. My mother's first husband was, I'm told a beast and a reprobate, and kept his distance on pain of slow death at the hands of my mother's family.

I remember him - my mother's friend - always being around when I was young. When we moved from the middle of nowhere to a suburb of the capital, he moved, too.

I know they went to college together, and that I was born while she was working on her master's.

There's an album full of photos of me, taken by him - he was a professional photographer, and fairly well-known.

When my mother remarried, he sort of faded away, but when I showed an interest in photography, back he popped up again, and the man taught me most of what I know about the subject, which is not a little.

As I say, he died recently, and my mother, after mentioning that she'd attend his funeral (same small town, after all), added that my stepfather was being unpleasant.

A few days ago, I got a package from home. A big one.

It was his 8x10 portrait camera - had his name engraved on the bottom - and a note from my mother reading, 'He wanted you to have this.'

Do I dare ask her who he was to us?

Regardless of any other definitions of who he was to y'all, he was a good man to you and your mother.

That alone is a blessing.

My upbringing had similarities to yours, albeit I knew my dad. But, a harsh divorce put many years between us.

Before my Mom passed, I knew her last suitor. They could never "be together" because....reasons.

But, he was a good man to her. And y'know? I'm glad she knew that bit of happiness and joy, before her final days only two years later.

He taught me how to shoot blackpowder. That lesson, stuck. He tried to teach me how to play golf. That lesson, failed.

But he was a good man to me, too.

Given this story, he was 'around' even when he wasn't seen, I think.
There's definitely a "there" there. You don't sound like a spring chicken yourself, so your mother may be getting to an age where she'd like to unburden.
I think it would be worth the risk, if it is that important to you.

81 [Beautiful things don't ask for attention. ]

Those British neo-hippies who want to go to Costa Rica could benefit from getting on the grid and reading the unintentionally hilarious dispatches from Costa Rica of one "One Pissed Off Liberal" of Daily Kos.

I watched it unfold in real time. It took about three months total.

Berkeley idiot has been unemployed for ages for some reason -- he's an instructional designer and hasn't had a gig in maybe a decade. So he decides to chuck the shitty U.S. of A. with its non-free health care, bigots, rat races, white people, processed food, world-threatening air conditioning, etc. and go to paradisaical Costa Rica.

He's mugged by reality within a week. All the affordable huts are "e. coli factories" by his reckoning, and he finds himself moving unhappily from hut to hut. Next, he realizes he's in a damn jungle with no air conditioning. He has to soak his hats in vinegar to keep them from getting moldy. The overhead fan does nothing but stir the hot, steamy air.

Then there's the people. The locals are all thieves and con-men. His fellow expats are Americans who barely give him the time of day, or loud, drunken, narcissistic, bigoted Europeans who curse the natives and the weather.

Then there's the lifestyle. No Chinese restaurants! No Italian! No gourmet burgers! It's all this Costa Rican food day after day, night after night. No cinemas, no clubs, no hangouts where he speaks the language (of course he isn't learning Spanish).

Oh, and medical care? Through the roof. He thought America was the only country in the world where you have to pay for high-quality medical care. He spent a fortune on I can't remember what -- he had an infection or mosquito bites or diarrhea or something that he never got in Berkeley.

He's back in the racist hellhole of America, never to leave. He was real popular among the Kooks until he proved to be a recalcitrant Berniebot.

88 And Unions do the same thing for their members.

No strike has EVER recouped the losses from the lack of work during the strike.

No new contract has ever made up that money or the productivity of the company.

And it's a total ripoff of the union members local citizens.

Contract Union wages rely on their fellow citizens working for less that they will receive from their union contract. Otherwise the cost of living will always outstrip the contracted wages.

Most of Union contracts are concerned with controlling the size of the work force, the rules forced on the employer that decrease productivity and the opportunity for certain members to rake in a wind fall because of the contract. (which of course a percentage is taken out of their pay and handed to the Union bosses.)

Unions are socialist.

This is the most mature and healthy way to deal with it.

Just take it on face value. People act and do things while grieving and when on their death bead that does not make sense to the outside world.

For example, my dad gave a watch to one of his Special Forces Friends just before he died to give to me. Well on the back of the watch was the name of a girl with a date. For over a decade I was chasing what I thought was a sister.
I told Momma Cactus about it last Christmas, and she laughed saying he grabbed the watch at a bar thinking it was his and didnot know there was an engraving on the back because he was blind from the optical nueroplathy.

We had a laugh about it.

Then the act of your mom ensuring that camera reached you, was her effort towards a subtle invitation as to your inquiry. Nothing more, nothing less. She's left it up to you, as to pursue the matter, as I see it.

Sadly, my mom passed in '78, at the ripe olde age of 54. We didn't get to have many of those conversations.

Okay, here we go:

Not long ago, a very close family friend died. I say 'family friend'
but he was more my mother's friend than my step-father's. My
bio-father, I never met, and know nothing about. My mother's first
husband was, I'm told a beast and a reprobate, and kept his distance on
pain of slow death at the hands of my mother's family.

I remember him - my mother's friend - always being around when I
was young. When we moved from the middle of nowhere to a suburb of the
capital, he moved, too.

I know they went to college together, and that I was born while she was working on her master's.

There's an album full of photos of me, taken by him - he was a professional photographer, and fairly well-known.

When my mother remarried, he sort of faded away, but when I showed
an interest in photography, back he popped up again, and the man taught
me most of what I know about the subject, which is not a little.

As I say, he died recently, and my mother, after mentioning that
she'd attend his funeral (same small town, after all), added that my
stepfather was being unpleasant.

A few days ago, I got a package from home. A big one.

It was his 8x10 portrait camera - had his name engraved on the
bottom - and a note from my mother reading, 'He wanted you to have
this.'

Do I dare ask her who he was to us?

It could be simple-- if he didn't have kids of his own, and he taught you a lot of photography, it was natural that the camera would go to you.

Or it could be something entirely different.

Question: Would you want to know if it was something else?

Sometimes not knowing is better than knowing.

125 The Venezuelan gubmint is also pushing collectives aka communes to become self sufficient in growing food. The acronym of this program is CLAP. mmmm hmmm

The local CLAP showed a reporter a barren field "that they hope to have ready for planting in 8 months".

I don't suppose they did any reading about the early years of the Plymouth colony.

Putin is also pushing the creation of Russian 'self sufficiency' mainly because they have lost access to much foreign financing because of his adventures in Crimea and Ukraine.

127 Hey everybody.

Got something to tell you all about, and hope this doesn't sound too much like a commercial: my cousin Doreen's husband, Shaun, is the owner of a fairly successful server/networking business in Colorado. But back in the day he was with a talented hard rock band called Gasoline Alley, which made a halfway decent effort to get signed, and from what I've heard came close a few times.

Anyway it never happened, but the members have gotten back together just in the past year, reformed as "Power," and have independently released an album. I went to see 'em last night at a hole-in-the-wall live venue in Van Nuys and was very pleasantly surprised by what I heard and saw.

I videotaped two of the songs they performed live last night with my handy dandy point-and-shoot Canon and will have those up on YouTube soon, but in the meantime, here's the album; it's on sale at iTunes, Amazon and Spotify, at least. Sean described their sound to me as Queensryche meets Journey, and he wasn't kidding; tuneful and hard-driving.

Anyway, I hope a few of you at least will give 'em a try, and as I said, I plan to have my video of them up soon.

You know, bright kids stick in your mind. Sometimes you wish you could have been around to see how they turn out, and think you could have done something to make their lives better or easier or meaningful.

Sometimes you see them again as adults, sometimes through other peoples' comments and from a distance, and it breaks your heart to realize that this is what you missed out, for some reason, being a part of.

It is a gift. Take it and do good things with it. Like what you did with his example and his teaching. I wouldn't over-think it.

I have a device I use when I get into a situation where I'm confused as to the right action. It does require sorting all the possible actions and outcomes down to a binary choice, though.

It's called a coin flip.

Don't laugh, it works.
If you tell yourself you will abide by the outcome of a coin flip, you will know after the flip if it landed right or wrong.
I mean, you'll have an emotional reaction regardless of which side comes up.
Then you'll know what your heart and soul wants.

Whether or not your brain over-rides it is another story, but you will know what you want.

161 85 So how exactly does Sesame Street on HBO work - is it not a premium cable channel that requires one to purchase it?

How then does this remain a Public broadcast??

We, the taxpayers, are no longer funding this, right?

And was HBO allowed to purchase the rights to the various characters - elmo dolls, big-bird emblazoned carseats and onesies - are they now profiting on characters that were created by government-funded people?
Posted by: Lizzy at July 31, 2016 11:49 PM (NOIQH)

The Sesame Street production company sells the programming to your local PBS station, and since it is a very popular program, it costs your local PBS station lots of bucks.

The deal with HBO gives HBO the "rights" to broadcast the new episodes for about a year, and then after that year, the local PBS gets to broadcast the "new" shows.

Supposedly, this will allow them to sell the program to the local PBS for a lot cheaper.

BTW, Sesame Street retained all the merchandising rights to their characters, so that even though they generate billions of dollars in merchandise sales, PBS sees zero of it.

I should point out that I'm fully convinced of Baldilocks' analysis of SCOAMF's parentage because he looks nothing like Obama, senior, and quite a lot like Davis. Your approach could become extremely straightforward should you also show clear signs. And, BTW, I should note that knowing where your genes come from can be exceedingly helpful in medical situations -- where knowing where your culture/values come from makes you a family and determines who your ancestors and descendants are.

Get some pictures. And if mom left the door ajar, formulate your questions accordingly. If, for instance, there's an elevated risk of Tay-Sachs (or not), it's something your daughter should know.

IMHO, if someone were sired by A and raised by B, they should always honor B as their father in society and love; while assessing their genome from A.

It wasn't really the price of the oil when Chavez was in power, it was that they still had people working production that knew what they were doing and how to maintain the facilities. After Huggy Bear nationalized the oil fields, they lost all of that brain power, and since then their production has been falling and what little profits are made are siphoned off by the regime.

Exxon, Shell, or BP would have them swimming in $$$$ if they took over the fields, but after being thrown out years ago, they are a little shy to spend any $$$$ going in there.

183 Hmmphhh. From the last thread where I was going on about tide locking, I got to wondering when the earth would lock with the Moon. A fucking long time. In fact, all sorts of hell, unknown hell can be played with the solar system and the inner planets before it happens.

And so I got to looking at the future timeline of this here earth, solar system, etc.

Andromeda is going to collide with the Milky Way before the Sun goes red giant, actually. The error bars are wide because of uncertainties in velocity, but the median time is 4 billion years. Sun goes red giant in 5 billion.

Life on earth will have ceased to be possible well before then, about 1 billion years tops. Well, complex multicellular life.

In about 600 million years, photosynthesis of the common type will become impossible. In 1 billion, it all will be impossible. At that point, the Sun's luminosity will have increased by 10%. Surface temperature on the earth will be well over 100F.

By about 3 billion years, all single cell life will be completely impossible. And at that point, the Moon will have receded far enough away that its stabilizing of the earth's axial tilt ceases, and the tilt will go chaotic.

How long before Venezuelans start starving to death en masse?

You know what will happen when they do.

"The poor, unfortunate Venezuelans are starving because of America
and global warming. We must send them trillions of dollars and import
all their women and children. The words 'socialist' and 'drug dealer'

I wish it would be their women and children. Women and children in socialist societies die off at a rate greater than able-bodied men. Instead, there will be calls to import the more socialist (=healthy, because politically-connected) of their able-bodied military-aged males.

Dude. Two articles about Colombians fleeing Venezuela for Colombia, and an an article that is built around the declaration by the UN High Commission on Refugees that (well, Caracol Radio in Colombia says 132,000, not 100,000 as reported in Yahoo per AFP) Venezuelans came to Colombia to shop for basic goods, and that if lots of them stayed it might affect the FARC negotiations and cause other problems.

266 If Gary Johnson makes it to the debates the moderator and Johnson will
work very hard to have him come out looking like a libertarian
conservative rather than 70% Bernie Sanders he admits to be. Remember,
his runningmate is a "republican" that worked with Hillary during
Watergate and still likes her.

IMO, the "libertarian" big wigs - at least the "viable" ones and not the ones who think diapers are appropriate convention attire - seem to be liberal Republicans who like to get stoned, so pretty much the worst of all worlds. Reason interviewed Johnson and Weld, and when they asked about SCOTUS Justices, they cited Bryers as just the peachiest keenest Justice EVAH and also said that it was a shame Merrick Garland hadn't gotten a nom because he was their ideal candidate.

It's a damn shame because there's a lot in libertarianism to recommend it (and a lot of Utopian nonsense). If I had to define my political philosophy, "conservatarian" comes pretty darn close.

Exaggerating things in the end mocks the suffering and discredits the reports of misery and pain and the danger to the world. In the end, it justifies the original lies.

287 So today turned out to be VW day at Peon Manor. Mainly because I had to move two of them to mow the damned grass under 'em. The '73 Super Beetle was out of fuel, so I poured a little gas in it, and it started right up, so I drove it up to the shop. The '71 Super Beetle was also dry, and I know I put fuel in it a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, I filled it up, and it started, but the engine was very noisy, and I got it moved a few yards, and it quit again. Pulled the dipstick, because, worried. Crankcase full of gasoline.

Got my oil drain pan, drained out the much-diluted oil, and added 2 quarts of fresh oil. Removed the old fuel pump, which surely has a failed diaphragm. Curse you, Archer Daniels Midland, and your alcohol-polluted fuel! Found an old VW fuel pump in the parts bin which appeared sound, but had to take the filter housing off it to mount on the engine because of clearance issues with the alternator. It started right up, and ran fine, but when I parked it and checked the engine, fuel was running down the outside of the fuel pump. I disconnected the line from the tank and capped it. I guess I will have to order some alcohol-proof fuel pumps from one of the VW parts sources.

Anyway, I got the '73 up on ramps, and spent the rest of the day welding up rust in the floor pan and passenger side door sill. Got that side all finished, and a coat of paint on the floor to boot. This is one VW that the body will never come off the floor pan, because they are now welded together. Not the most kosher way to do it, but a '73 Super Beetle is worth next to nothing as a collector car. And I can make a fairly decent driver out of it without spending much money. It does run and drive just fine.

That's a good question. I count 33 more or less complete vehicles, with engines in them that can be started if I provide fuel and a battery. About 8 of them are roadworthy, or close enough to reckoned so. 5 actually plated and insured. About 11 engineless project cars, or vehicles that no way could be started. And a few hulks, that will serve only to be parted out.

The line between "project car" and "hulk" may shift from time to time, heh.

323 *sigh* Can't sleep. Took the family to the beach this weekend, had a great time. We came back, went for a twilight sail, and as I was coming back to the slip, whoops! no reverse. It's really, really hard to back a sailboat up without being able to use the engine. So I merrily sailed on down the marina until friction stopped me, then I moored my boat in an empty slip with the help of some other boaters (they threw me a line and pulled me in). I came home and crashed by 10:30, but I woke up at midnight and I haven't been able to get back to sleep. My body is bad like that, if I get a little bit of sleep when I go to bed but wake all the way up, it doesn't want to sleep again for hours, even though I'm tired and writing this post through yawns. It doesn't help that my brain is brooding about the boat.

I'm not too worried about the malfunction, I'm 95% sure it's a simple linkage problem and should be a relatively simple fix.

My boat isn't in my slip. It's in an unused one, but I have to call the marina 1st thing in the morning.

Did I moor it properly? One front line was there already, what if it belongs to the neighboring slip (which was empty but is used?) The other I lassoed the dock piling, suppose the loop slips?

One rear line was on a piling, but old-it's covered with barnacles. Suppose it breaks? The other side got one of my spare lines, but I wasn't able to cross them properly. Yea they're all tight, and there's no storms expected, but...

Worry, worry, worry. The ole' thinker just won't shut down, and there's nothing I can do about it ATM.

Shit. I wish I could sleep.

That turned out to be a fairy tale. The baby is now thirty-two and would still be nursing if I'd allowed it. On his fourth birthday I hooked him up and said, "Enjoy it, son, 'cause this is the last call."

I am caught between showing-up tired and getting a risky boost of energy. My eyes have bags that could carry a cart full of canned goods.

The good news is that I have done it previously and I can perform under such duress.

I drink water and I am down to about three twelve-ounce cans of Pepsi a week.

I hated quitting coffee. I still do. I enjoy the cake donuts that come along with it. The "pull-apart" fruit pastries... etc.

This will be the first Christmas without coffee and I'll miss the cookies.

The good news is that I no longer have to guzzle a beer at nine A.M. when I cannot pull myself out of a spiral. (When I don't have to work, that is.)

I would never show-up at someone's home with a beer on my breath!

I could only show-up a little late, (twenty minutes to one-half hour), and lie about being on the phone or traffic.

I'd much rather be on-time and quit coffee.

353 Slap, can't you drink an occasional cup of coffee without going off the deep end?

I had to cut way back on coffee. Was drinking an entire pot of perked coffee a day and my cholesterol was inching up there. My son had one of those little four-cup drip pots like you see in hotels. I adopted that and it has worked well. Or as well as four cups could on an eight-cup person.

355 I used to drink three pots, (large, 12-cup), a day when I was in my twenties and I first owned my own business.

I didn't start getting panic attacks until my late twenties and I associated it with smoking weed. I quit smoking weed and I didn't have another panic attack until I was in my late thirties.

It was weird and I associated it with the lack of sleep and the long drive. They were merely sporadic after that.

Now that I am in my mid-forties, I have been having them only after either drinking heavily, (a twelve-pack in under a twenty-four hour period), or with coffee.

My nervous system can no longer take either of those things and especially in tandem.

I can no longer drink a full cup, (ten ounces) of coffee without wigging out. My nose gets tingly and I feel like I am falling.

Then my fingers get numb and I can make no sense of what is going-on around me.

I've been checked for nervous-system disorders and other maladies, but it seems that lack of sleep is the main culprit.

Lack of exercise isn't exactly "it", but perhaps I need a more tiring regimen because what I'm doing isn't working.

As to cities with assigned quarters, mass transit, etc., they are at best ant farms or fish tanks. Something to look at but everything is controlled by others and they cannot sustain themselves. Or they can be like Chicago or Detroit: an abattoir.

Before anyone can run for political office, they should have to feed themselves and their families and make a living from farming for several years. And I mean they have to do the work, not just hire others. I can't thnk of another occupation that so stresses the importance of reality and the consequences of your decisions. If they survive that (and it is a big if) then they can try for a political position.

OK. Rant off.

He has to pacify his rabidly "Progressive" and indoctrinated constituents in Madison, Wisconsin and the outlying suburbs.

Politicians are what they are. They become bastardized once they are in the system.

Holding-on becomes "A Thing", so they might pass some sort of legislation that they wanted from the beginning.

In the meanwhile, they "go with the flow", so as to make "friends" and reduce attacks by enemies.

It is too bad that the Conservatives don't stand upon the foundation of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Trump, (who is NOT a conservative), fist-fights and uses the Left's tactics to "survive" the political atmosphere.

I bought a Challenger back in '73 and you're right, Vic. I had to order
the 318 engine because I couldn't afford to ensure the 340.

Bought
another one in 2011. It has a six-cylinder engine and more power than I
could ever need. To put the cherry on the sundae, it'll crank out 30
mpg without trying and 40 if you're careful.

Posted by: creeper at August 01, 2016 06:06 AM (Nhjs9)

The 69 340 with the 4 barrel Carter was a mean engine. The one with three deuces was even meaner. The automakers vastly underrated the HP on their engines but the insurance agencies caught on to that pretty quickly. They rated the 4-barrel 340 at 275 but IIANM it was actually closer to just over 300. The 6-pack was even more. My older brother had one with the 4-barrel.

Some of the guys were talking about fish and fishing and the Asian carp was brought up. One of my female cousins asked, "why doesn't someone catch up all of these carp and get them to the poor people that need protein?"
I replied, why don't the poor people get a pole and go to the river where the fish hang out?

IIANM the wildlife departments who have deployed those Asian carp have made it illegal to catch them. They weren't put there as a game fish and carp in general are shitty as an eating fish.

They actually do catch the Asian carp here in the Big River. A local fishery hauls them in by the ton and ships them to Chicago where they're sold to Orientals.

Do you mean Orientals?

I though they had jumped some barriers (they actually do leap out of the water) from some fish farms. They made there way into the rivers, and are now headed into the Great Lakes.
Probably the easiest way to get rid of them is to make it illegal to catch them.
Then people will be on the shore shooting them with shotguns

Theoretically those dams are not supposed to change river flow once the level has stabilized. They are supposed to release water at the same rate that it is coming into the impoundment. We had such a man-created lake and federal law regulated the release rate from the dam in that manner.

465 Again true, Vic, although they mess with the flow rate consistently.

What happened was that the locks raised the level of the water so that the surrounding lowlands were submerged. The water started out fairly deep but over time, those lowlands have filled in. The result is the grass those carp were intended to control.

It's everywhere. You can't even avoid it by staying in the channel because a rising river will flush it out of the backwaters. You have to clear the prop every quarter mile or so.

Well, they do have to vary it during periods of heavy rain. If you know a heavy influx is going to occur you need to up the flow out before that heavy influx his the lake so that a massive outflow is not required which will result in flooding.

However, you have to get "permission" from the feds to do that. (more stupid) We had an event years ago where heavy rains upstream were sure to cause a massive increase in lake level and requested to increase outflow in preparation for it. The feds drug their sorry asses for a long time before granting permission but it was too late.

We wound up having to open the "Hal-Bunger" valves to massively release water for the first time since the dam was built. Of course the stream down stream of the dam flooded. Homes and at least one factory were flooded and we got sued. Not the incompetent feds.

470 Vic, the Corps contends that they do not use the dams for flood control and from what I've seen that's correct. Their sole purpose is to maintain a nine-foot channel for commercial traffic.

When Old Man River gets to flooding, what goes through the dams is a drop in the bucket. One of my favorite memories is of going through the DAM (not the lock) at Bellevue in flatwater during a flood.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 01, 2016 07:46 AM (3ZoRf)

472 In practice, one of the functions of a dam is to act as a sort of "capacitor" for water flow to dampen out flow oscillations that result in flooding. Overall, the construction of all the dams in the Tennessee River area have been a great boon to the area and the economy.
