And if you follow the timeline and movement of the pieces, it seems pretty clear that everything was structured (and powered by quid pro quo) to guarantee that the Dowager Queen of Chautauqua would never be embarrassed by a primary loss again.
When you look back at this chain of events, post-DNC hacking scandal, it sure is a lot easier to understand why there was a thumb, a fist, hell, a side of beef, on the scale against Bernie Sanders and his supports in the 2016 primary cycle.
Bernie voters, you sad saps, you never had a chance. Now, we can reasonably suspect that the chance you didn't have goes back eight years. We can also deduce that the Democratic Party is a top-down organization, not a grassroots organization. They claim to be, of course, but the power at the top has nothing to do with the will of the people in its base. It's a club where only the opinions of a couple of members count.

Minimum wage increases do not increase buying power - not in the long run, because prices reset to counter the increased costs and wipe out any theoretical gains for low-income workers. As this study shows, it doesn't increase buying power in the short run either for workers that supposedly should benefit from the policy. Even the best-case scenario only produces a bump high enough to get an extra latté a week from Starbucks - until Starbucks has to raise its prices, or force longer wait times with smaller staffs, which is a cost of another kind.
The continual push for minimum-wage hikes flies in the face of all evidence, and of all results. If this policy were effective, we wouldn't need to keep raising the level of pay; we would have solved poverty decades ago. It's wishcasting at best, and it's destructive political pandering at worst - and as we see in Seattle, usually it's the worst.

In an attempt to test whether the higher numbers of cardiovascular deaths were simply a statistical blip or a genuine sign of the effect of traveling into deep space, the scientists exposed mice to the same type of radiation that the astronauts would have experienced. After six months, which is the equivalent of 20 human years, the mice showed damage to arteries that is known to lead to the development of cardiovascular disease in humans.

I don't know how it will pan-out in the near future when the paper crash happens, but the bright ones of the past 40 years or so of state-run lotteries invest it as their principal and only spend the return/interest.

Not long ago, a very close family friend died. I say 'family friend' but he was more my mother's friend than my step-father's. My bio-father, I never met, and know nothing about. My mother's first husband was, I'm told a beast and a reprobate, and kept his distance on pain of slow death at the hands of my mother's family.
I remember him - my mother's friend - always being around when I was young. When we moved from the middle of nowhere to a suburb of the capital, he moved, too.
I know they went to college together, and that I was born while she was working on her master's.
There's an album full of photos of me, taken by him - he was a professional photographer, and fairly well-known.
When my mother remarried, he sort of faded away, but when I showed an interest in photography, back he popped up again, and the man taught me most of what I know about the subject, which is not a little.
As I say, he died recently, and my mother, after mentioning that she'd attend his funeral (same small town, after all), added that my stepfather was being unpleasant.
A few days ago, I got a package from home. A big one.
It was his 8x10 portrait camera - had his name engraved on the bottom - and a note from my mother reading, 'He wanted you to have this.'
Do I dare ask her who he was to us?

That alone is a blessing.
My upbringing had similarities to yours, albeit I knew my dad. But, a harsh divorce put many years between us.
Before my Mom passed, I knew her last suitor. They could never "be together" because....reasons.
But, he was a good man to her. And y'know? I'm glad she knew that bit of happiness and joy, before her final days only two years later.
He taught me how to shoot blackpowder. That lesson, stuck. He tried to teach me how to play golf. That lesson, failed.
But he was a good man to me, too.
Can't tell you which way to roll with things, amigo. But be thankful you had a good man in your world, even if only for a season.

Those British neo-hippies who want to go to Costa Rica could benefit from getting on the grid and reading the unintentionally hilarious dispatches from Costa Rica of one "One Pissed Off Liberal" of Daily Kos.
I watched it unfold in real time. It took about three months total.
Berkeley idiot has been unemployed for ages for some reason -- he's an instructional designer and hasn't had a gig in maybe a decade. So he decides to chuck the shitty U.S. of A. with its non-free health care, bigots, rat races, white people, processed food, world-threatening air conditioning, etc. and go to paradisaical Costa Rica.
He's mugged by reality within a week. All the affordable huts are "e. coli factories" by his reckoning, and he finds himself moving unhappily from hut to hut. Next, he realizes he's in a damn jungle with no air conditioning. He has to soak his hats in vinegar to keep them from getting moldy. The overhead fan does nothing but stir the hot, steamy air.
Then there's the people. The locals are all thieves and con-men. His fellow expats are Americans who barely give him the time of day, or loud, drunken, narcissistic, bigoted Europeans who curse the natives and the weather.

No strike has EVER recouped the losses from the lack of work during the strike.
No new contract has ever made up that money or the productivity of the company.
And it's a total ripoff of the union members local citizens.
Contract Union wages rely on their fellow citizens working for less that they will receive from their union contract. Otherwise the cost of living will always outstrip the contracted wages.
Most of Union contracts are concerned with controlling the size of the work force, the rules forced on the employer that decrease productivity and the opportunity for certain members to rake in a wind fall because of the contract. (which of course a percentage is taken out of their pay and handed to the Union bosses.)

A single person can get by here with European or US-style standard of living for about $40,000 a year, but not really much less. A family needs a hundred grand p.a. to be really comfortable.

Before my Mom passed, I knew her last suitor. They could never "be together" because....reasons.
But, he was a good man to her. And y'know? I'm glad she knew that bit of happiness and joy, before her final days only two years later.
He taught me how to shoot blackpowder. That lesson, stuck. He tried to teach me how to play golf. That lesson, failed.
But he was a good man to me, too.

Just take it on face value. People act and do things while grieving and when on their death bead that does not make sense to the outside world.
For example, my dad gave a watch to one of his Special Forces Friends just before he died to give to me. Well on the back of the watch was the name of a girl with a date. For over a decade I was chasing what I thought was a sister.
I told Momma Cactus about it last Christmas, and she laughed saying he grabbed the watch at a bar thinking it was his and didnot know there was an engraving on the back because he was blind from the optical nueroplathy.
We had a laugh about it.

Not long ago, a very close family friend died. I say 'family friend'
but he was more my mother's friend than my step-father's. My
bio-father, I never met, and know nothing about. My mother's first

Got something to tell you all about, and hope this doesn't sound too much like a commercial: my cousin Doreen's husband, Shaun, is the owner of a fairly successful server/networking business in Colorado. But back in the day he was with a talented hard rock band called Gasoline Alley, which made a halfway decent effort to get signed, and from what I've heard came close a few times.
Anyway it never happened, but the members have gotten back together just in the past year, reformed as "Power," and have independently released an album. I went to see 'em last night at a hole-in-the-wall live venue in Van Nuys and was very pleasantly surprised by what I heard and saw.
I videotaped two of the songs they performed live last night with my handy dandy point-and-shoot Canon and will have those up on YouTube soon, but in the meantime, here's the album; it's on sale at iTunes, Amazon and Spotify, at least. Sean described their sound to me as Queensryche meets Journey, and he wasn't kidding; tuneful and hard-driving.
Anyway, I hope a few of you at least will give 'em a try, and as I said, I plan to have my video of them up soon.

I can attest to that. Over two decades ago, I taught a Sunday School class of fifth and sixth graders. There were a couple of them who I could tell were very intelligent, and wise for their years. One of them found me on Facebook recently. It turns out she lives less than 50 miles away now with a family of her own. I was only her teacher for a year or so, but knowing she grew up to be a well-adjusted adult helps me feel a little better about the world.

My Mom had a heart attack at 67 and had many struggles after that. Died in 2014 at the age of 77.
I miss her but understand many lost mothers much earlier.
We didn't along all that well, teen yrs were not so hot. I think that might be kinda normal.

The Sesame Street production company sells the programming to your local PBS station, and since it is a very popular program, it costs your local PBS station lots of bucks.
The deal with HBO gives HBO the "rights" to broadcast the new episodes for about a year, and then after that year, the local PBS gets to broadcast the "new" shows.
Supposedly, this will allow them to sell the program to the local PBS for a lot cheaper.
BTW, Sesame Street retained all the merchandising rights to their characters, so that even though they generate billions of dollars in merchandise sales, PBS sees zero of it.

I should point out that I'm fully convinced of Baldilocks' analysis of SCOAMF's parentage because he looks nothing like Obama, senior, and quite a lot like Davis. Your approach could become extremely straightforward should you also show clear signs. And, BTW, I should note that knowing where your genes come from can be exceedingly helpful in medical situations -- where knowing where your culture/values come from makes you a family and determines who your ancestors and descendants are.

It wasn't really the price of the oil when Chavez was in power, it was that they still had people working production that knew what they were doing and how to maintain the facilities. After Huggy Bear nationalized the oil fields, they lost all of that brain power, and since then their production has been falling and what little profits are made are siphoned off by the regime.
Exxon, Shell, or BP would have them swimming in $$$$ if they took over the fields, but after being thrown out years ago, they are a little shy to spend any $$$$ going in there.

Andromeda is going to collide with the Milky Way before the Sun goes red giant, actually. The error bars are wide because of uncertainties in velocity, but the median time is 4 billion years. Sun goes red giant in 5 billion.
Life on earth will have ceased to be possible well before then, about 1 billion years tops. Well, complex multicellular life.
In about 600 million years, photosynthesis of the common type will become impossible. In 1 billion, it all will be impossible. At that point, the Sun's luminosity will have increased by 10%. Surface temperature on the earth will be well over 100F.
By about 3 billion years, all single cell life will be completely impossible. And at that point, the Moon will have receded far enough away that its stabilizing of the earth's axial tilt ceases, and the tilt will go chaotic.
The chaotic influences of the inner planets' orbit also makes the chances of something drastic during this billion year time period.
So, in about 600 million to a billion years, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!

NBC news had a piece about some going to Colombia and I've seen articles in the British press mentioning same. "Storming" would be too strong a word, but with this decree, and the usual implementation-the government's political enemies will be just the labor needed-it will become a crisis for all the bordering countries. I wonder when Colombia, Brazil and others decide they've had enough and eliminate the regime.

Two articles about Colombians fleeing Venezuela for Colombia, and an an article that is built around the declaration by the UN High Commission on Refugees that (well, Caracol Radio in Colombia says 132,000, not 100,000 as reported in Yahoo per AFP) Venezuelans came to Colombia to shop for basic goods, and that if lots of them stayed it might affect the FARC negotiations and cause other problems.

Reason interviewed Johnson and Weld, and when they asked about SCOTUS Justices, they cited Bryers as just the peachiest keenest Justice EVAH and also said that it was a shame Merrick Garland hadn't gotten a nom because he was their ideal candidate.
It's a damn shame because there's a lot in libertarianism to recommend it (and a lot of Utopian nonsense). If I had to define my political philosophy, "conservatarian" comes pretty darn close.

Got my oil drain pan, drained out the much-diluted oil, and added 2 quarts of fresh oil. Removed the old fuel pump, which surely has a failed diaphragm. Curse you, Archer Daniels Midland, and your alcohol-polluted fuel! Found an old VW fuel pump in the parts bin which appeared sound, but had to take the filter housing off it to mount on the engine because of clearance issues with the alternator. It started right up, and ran fine, but when I parked it and checked the engine, fuel was running down the outside of the fuel pump. I disconnected the line from the tank and capped it. I guess I will have to order some alcohol-proof fuel pumps from one of the VW parts sources.
Anyway, I got the '73 up on ramps, and spent the rest of the day welding up rust in the floor pan and passenger side door sill. Got that side all finished, and a coat of paint on the floor to boot. This is one VW that the body will never come off the floor pan, because they are now welded together. Not the most kosher way to do it, but a '73 Super Beetle is worth next to nothing as a collector car. And I can make a fairly decent driver out of it without spending much money. It does run and drive just fine.

Yep, head gaskets. Common Subi problem. All fixed now and I've been driving it to work. I will be cutting the wood for a new cover for it next week probably, the Ozzbros cover I bought for it rotted out many years ago and I've been running with the bed uncovered but it is really handy to have a locking cover for it.

That's a good question. I count 33 more or less complete vehicles, with engines in them that can be started if I provide fuel and a battery. About 8 of them are roadworthy, or close enough to reckoned so. 5 actually plated and insured. About 11 engineless project cars, or vehicles that no way could be started. And a few hulks, that will serve only to be parted out.
The line between "project car" and "hulk" may shift from time to time, heh.

Despite the utter train wreck which is my life, there are wonderful, albeit simple, luxuries. One I've just enjoyed is, an outdoor shower where I can hose off the sweat of a muggy Oklahoma day, while gazing at stars and lightning bugs and hearing the train rumble by about a half-mile away while cats meander around me.
Wouldn't trade that for all the gold-plated bathroom fixtures on the Trump plane.

I'm not too worried about the malfunction, I'm 95% sure it's a simple linkage problem and should be a relatively simple fix.

I don't feel like stopping and pretending that something is wrong with the car on some unknown off-ramp; while I endure a coffee-induced panic attack.
I am caught between showing-up tired and getting a risky boost of energy. My eyes have bags that could carry a cart full of canned goods.
The good news is that I have done it previously and I can perform under such duress.

I drink water and I am down to about three twelve-ounce cans of Pepsi a week.
I hated quitting coffee. I still do. I enjoy the cake donuts that come along with it. The "pull-apart" fruit pastries... etc.
This will be the first Christmas without coffee and I'll miss the cookies.
The good news is that I no longer have to guzzle a beer at nine A.M. when I cannot pull myself out of a spiral. (When I don't have to work, that is.)
I would never show-up at someone's home with a beer on my breath!
I could only show-up a little late, (twenty minutes to one-half hour), and lie about being on the phone or traffic.
I'd much rather be on-time and quit coffee.

I had to cut way back on coffee. Was drinking an entire pot of perked coffee a day and my cholesterol was inching up there. My son had one of those little four-cup drip pots like you see in hotels. I adopted that and it has worked well. Or as well as four cups could on an eight-cup person.

I didn't start getting panic attacks until my late twenties and I associated it with smoking weed. I quit smoking weed and I didn't have another panic attack until I was in my late thirties.
It was weird and I associated it with the lack of sleep and the long drive. They were merely sporadic after that.
Now that I am in my mid-forties, I have been having them only after either drinking heavily, (a twelve-pack in under a twenty-four hour period), or with coffee.
My nervous system can no longer take either of those things and especially in tandem.
I can no longer drink a full cup, (ten ounces) of coffee without wigging out. My nose gets tingly and I feel like I am falling.
Then my fingers get numb and I can make no sense of what is going-on around me.
I've been checked for nervous-system disorders and other maladies, but it seems that lack of sleep is the main culprit.
Lack of exercise isn't exactly "it", but perhaps I need a more tiring regimen because what I'm doing isn't working.

As to cities with assigned quarters, mass transit, etc., they are at best ant farms or fish tanks. Something to look at but everything is controlled by others and they cannot sustain themselves. Or they can be like Chicago or Detroit: an abattoir.
Before anyone can run for political office, they should have to feed themselves and their families and make a living from farming for several years. And I mean they have to do the work, not just hire others. I can't thnk of another occupation that so stresses the importance of reality and the consequences of your decisions. If they survive that (and it is a big if) then they can try for a political position.

Do you have a family history of diabetes? It is largely a hereditary disease. If you don't then your odds on getting type I diabetes are low unless you are morbidly obese.

The 69 340 with the 4 barrel Carter was a mean engine. The one with three deuces was even meaner. The automakers vastly underrated the HP on their engines but the insurance agencies caught on to that pretty quickly. They rated the 4-barrel 340 at 275 but IIANM it was actually closer to just over 300. The 6-pack was even more. My older brother had one with the 4-barrel.

He got pretty good mileage . . . as long as he didn't put the foot in it and kick those secondaries. When you did that the gas gauge dropped, the noise level upped, and every cop with 5 miles could hear it.

I though they had jumped some barriers (they actually do leap out of the water) from some fish farms. They made there way into the rivers, and are now headed into the Great Lakes.
Probably the easiest way to get rid of them is to make it illegal to catch them.
Then people will be on the shore shooting them with shotguns

I saw via Twitter Muslims visiting a catholic church after the event in France. If I was mayor, rather than have Muslims visit a cathedral, I'd have Jews visit the mosque. Because diversity makes us stronger.

Theoretically those dams are not supposed to change river flow once the level has stabilized. They are supposed to release water at the same rate that it is coming into the impoundment. We had such a man-created lake and federal law regulated the release rate from the dam in that manner.

What happened was that the locks raised the level of the water so that the surrounding lowlands were submerged. The water started out fairly deep but over time, those lowlands have filled in. The result is the grass those carp were intended to control.
It's everywhere. You can't even avoid it by staying in the channel because a rising river will flush it out of the backwaters. You have to clear the prop every quarter mile or so.

Well, they do have to vary it during periods of heavy rain. If you know a heavy influx is going to occur you need to up the flow out before that heavy influx his the lake so that a massive outflow is not required which will result in flooding.
However, you have to get "permission" from the feds to do that. (more stupid) We had an event years ago where heavy rains upstream were sure to cause a massive increase in lake level and requested to increase outflow in preparation for it. The feds drug their sorry asses for a long time before granting permission but it was too late.
We wound up having to open the "Hal-Bunger" valves to massively release water for the first time since the dam was built. Of course the stream down stream of the dam flooded. Homes and at least one factory were flooded and we got sued. Not the incompetent feds.

When Old Man River gets to flooding, what goes through the dams is a drop in the bucket. One of my favorite memories is of going through the DAM (not the lock) at Bellevue in flatwater during a flood.
