Dammit, I got Willowed in the last thread, responding to "women strutting in church":
When I was a kid, back in the '70s, there was this gal that used to strut in church. Let's see, she was one of a big family, a bunch of kids, mostly girls. She'd been married and was divorced, which was still quite the scandal with the older women (and men) at the time. Including my paternal grandmother, who was sort of queen bee at the church. I was too young to really understand, nor appreciate it (in my memory, this gal cut quite a nice figure). She would always show up late, and enter the sanctuary when most everyone had sat down and settled in. And here she'd come in, dressed to the nines, with form fitting skirts and all that, usually some hat of some sort. She'd do a strut down the aisle to sit in a pew close to the front. Again, I was too young to appreciate it at the time. But the men had those silly grins, trying to hide it, on their faces, and the women were shooting her daggers out of their eyes. Playing around at my grandmother's during that time, she'd get on the phone in the afternoon and talk with all her biddy friends, and I heard her say "whore!" in talking about that gal. Anyway, they were getting ready to run her out. I don't remember the details, but I think someone did have a talking to with her, pissed her off and some broohahhah ensued. But I was too young to get in on all the talk. I don't know what happened to her, she's got to be in her 70s now. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at July 31, 2016 08:16 PM (DW+jj) 25

I'm remembering. To my grandmother, and both grandmothers actually, a divorcee was just a filthy, worthless whore. I mean, trash to be thrown out, and thrown out quickly because it smelled so bad.
Back around that time, 70s, one of my female cousins, her ganddaughter got divorced. As far as my paternal grandmother was concern, this granddaughter was dead. She had brought the ultimate shame on the family. It was just a few years before my grandmother died, and this cousin got remarried. My grandmother just snorted and said what kind of man would want such used, damaged goods. That's the way a lot of that generation thought. Unlike the Earth, which is tilted so the poles are in six months of darkness and six months of light, the moon is almost perfectly aligned with its orbit around the sun. You can imagine a single mountain peak near the south pole, going round and round as the moon rotates, illuminated by the sun. In practice, we've now mapped out the moon carefully enough that we see there are some very thin ridges -- crater rims and ridges joining craters -- that are very close to being that. But they're tiny, thin ribbons and their total area is a few football fields.

"Is Mercury tidally locked? No. The effect you are referring to in relation to the Moon and Earth is called "Tidal Locking". Many bodies in the Solar System are tidally locked to the object that they orbit, but Mercury is not tidally locked to the Sun. Mercury's rotates exactly three times for every two times it revolves around the Sun." 96: Tidal lock.
This gets very involved to detail here, but if you're interested, there are many good online explanations going into various levels of detail. The earth is being slowed down by the same tidal forces, and eventually the earth will be in tidal lock with the Moon as well. The sloshing of the tides, which is where "tidal forces" get their name, and similiar elastic effects on the crust causes a friction that slows the rotation down. But the Sun will be a red giant before then, IIRC. Conservation of angular momentum requires this process to throw the Moon into a higher orbit, driving it further away. You can call Mercury a type of tidal lock, it's just not 1:1 (one rotation per revolution). It's 3:2. "Spin-orbit resonance" is another term.
This gets very complicated. In a circular orbit, only 1:1 tide locks would occur. But in elliptical orbits, if the eccentricity is great enough, then this crazy 3:2 lock can occur (others may be theoretically possible, I can't remember). Anyway, you can see this on an energy diagram, constructed carefully taking all the complex factors into account. The 3:2 resonance is a *local minimum* on that total energy curve. 1:1 would be even lower energy, but the 3:2 is a local dip that a body can fall into. The get Mercury into a nice 1:1 lot, you would have to give it more total energy to get over that hump enough to then fall back into nice 1:1 lock. Again, the details are complicated, but it's an effect of the eccentricity of the orbit. The tidal force *magniture* varies along with the orbital speed. Note in a very elliptical orbit, as orbital speed varies, this means that rotational speed cannot be always in sync as it can with a circular orbit. It's these little complexities that create the 3:2 resonance/lock. The Moon is in a tidal lock with Earth, that low energy point. But the Earth is slowly locking with the Moon, which throws it farther away and slows it's own rotation down further. This will take so long the Sun will be a red giant before, and other gravitational effects of the Sun losing mass and all that will cause other perturbations. We can't be exactly sure what's going to happen to the Earth-Moon system as the Sun's life comes to an end.
Now, the Moon's orbit is not perfectly circular, it's slightly elliptical. As I mentioned above, this means the instantaneous orbital and rotational speeds cannot be always in sync. As a result, the Moon sort of wobbles, and shows more than one hemisphere to us. This is called "libration". The Wiki page on the orbit of the Moon will show a speeded up picture of the face of the Moon, and you can see the libration. The ancients used to meticulously detail all the complex motions. They had no idea what was going on, but the ancients were obsessed with it. This was the stuff of the gods. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at July 31, 2016 08:56 PM (DW+jj) 198

From ye Viki:
The town is named after the old Narvik farm ("Narduigh" – 1567), since the town is built on its ground.[4] The Norse form of the name was probably *Knarravík, and the first element is then the genitive pluralis of knarr 'merchant ship' – the last element is vík 'inlet'. The name Knarravík (modern forms Knarvik or Narvik) is found several places along the Norwegian coast (and three places in the old Norwegian province of Bohuslän), and it is referring to good, natural ports. The Moon's orbit also precesses. This is known as apsidial precession. The near and far points of an elliptic orbit are in general known as periapsis and apoapsis. For the earth, perigee and apogee can be used, and for the Sun, perihelion and aphelion. For a star, periastron and apoastron.
For an orbit around the Moon itself, one can say pericynthion and apocynthion. Or screw all that and stick with apses. Anyway, perigee of the Moon's orbit itself rotates around the Earth every 8.85 years. Note this is not in sync with anything. Now, there are even subtler perturbations of the Moon's orbit. In fact, we now know the Moon's orbit so well, thanks to lunar laser ranging due to the reflectors placed there by Apollo, that it is known to 2cm accuracy. Probably better now. At this level, Netwonian Gravity fails. General Relativity however, has it nailed. Kenneth Nortvedt, one of the High Priests of General Relativity and particularly observational gravitation, showed that General Relativity predicts the observed motion of the Moon to within that 2cm range of accuracy. He was trying to tease out sub-millimeter accuracy. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at July 31, 2016 09:12 PM (DW+jj) 270

Mr. Khan seems to forget that thousands of other parents have lost children to the debacle in the ME. In case he forgot, many of those that were deployed stated their purpose was to keep the war there and not bring it home. By his advocacy for little to no vetting of those from terrorist countries, he is belittling and deprecating their sacrifice and, perhaps, his own son's. Plus, in case he is oblivious to facts, Obama, through his short-sightedness and unfailingly naive stupidity, created the vacuum that has made that sacrifice meaningless.
Perhaps the tables should be turned by some of those parents who still grieve over the little value placed on their child's life by Obama, whom Mr. Khan seems to see as an innocent. Posted by: ever at July 31, 2016 09:16 PM (QZdJj) Posted by: Ian Galt at July 31, 2016 09:16 PM (8iiMU) 292

Serious question - do you guys think the naked Melania photos will mean less Trump votes or more Trump votes? Posted by: @votermom at July 31, 2016 09:02 PM (7lVbc) Trump's fate is to be defined by his enemies -- but not as his enemies would wish him to be defined.....rather as being someone hated by certain kinds of person -- who, in turn, are utterly despised by a large portion of the electorate. By the time his election rolls around, everyone voting for him will be thinking, "illegal aliens are against him", "the press is against him", "slackers are against him", "pajama boys are against him", "the political elite that gets away with murder is against him", "unaccountable faceless Federal bureaucrats are against him", "the Davos crowd is against him", "unions are against him", "SJWs are against him", etc. To which the overwhelming response will be, "well, they can go f*** themselves -- I'm pulling the lever for Trump". Serious question - do you guys think the naked Melania photos will mean less Trump votes or more Trump votes? This photo business reminds me of an old Perry Mason episode from 1964. A woman's daughter is being blackmailed by a photographer who threatens to publish some nude photos of the daughter. It seems the same guy threatened to do the same thing to the mother several years before. When the mother was questioned on the stand about the details in her own case she stated that she told the blackmailer "publish and go to blazes. I'm proud of my figure!" "It's a hollow satellite used by aliens to spy on us."
The only thing that makes sense is that the earth is a resort analogous to "Westworld". Or alternatively the Earth is the spaceship and the Moon is a control center analogous to District 9 plot line. (note contradiction about only thing that makes sense; if multiverse is true then this works; else go all spiritual and say all things are possible to God.) Don't forget the Moon was a searchlight in The Truman Show. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that the Moon wasn't positioned by intelligence and that it is somehow natural. The rationals on why it must be artificial were given in a paper by some Russians and that report was mentioned on Ancient Aliens. It was reported in the tabloids at the time and is online somewhere. Quite convincing. I think Stonehenge and other similar sites were used in getting the Moon and the Earth properly positioned according to resort plans. I also think Chemtrails are being used to hide activity in low earth orbit that could be seen with the naked eye. eg Hide the tourist transports. That would make us the dangerous robots. One more interesting thing about tidal locking and the tidal spin-orbit interaction:
For a satellite with a prograde orbit *faster* than the main body's rotational period, the effect will be the opposite. The main body's rotation will *speed up* and the satellite will spiral into the main body. This is actually happening with one of Mar's tiny moons, Phobos. Phobos will eventually crash into Mars. Phobos crashing into Mars will be a big Martian SMOD. It'll only be about 50 million years, which is short over the life of the sun and solar system.
Well, it's not clear. Depending on some unknown factors, it could break up before it becomes an SMOD, and actually form a little ring around Mars. For a while. Phobos' orbital period is faster than Mar's rotational period, which makes it an interesting sight in the Marian sky. It appears to rise in the West and set in the East, twice per Martian day.
Now you're just making shit up. /kidding Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 31, 2016 11:01 PM (SRKgf) 687

The anomalous precession of the perihelion of Mercury's orbit was one of the unsolved mysteries of gravitation. All the other planets (which perturb the standard 2-body pure ellipses) couldn't account for but about half of it.
General Relavity came along and 'splained it. While the Sun's field is weak as far as GR goes, Mercury goes get close and fast enough to make the non-Newtonian behavior evident. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at July 31, 2016 11:07 PM (DW+jj) 706

Pulling 'em up protects 'em from damage with aggressive harmonic motion there, and also increases the temp, which gets the little tadpoles activated, swimming around. Those British neo-hippies who want to go to Costa Rica could benefit from getting on the grid and reading the unintentionally hilarious dispatches from Costa Rica of one "One Pissed Off Liberal" of Daily Kos. I watched it unfold in real time. It took about three months total. Berkeley idiot has been unemployed for ages for some reason -- he's an instructional designer and hasn't had a gig in maybe a decade. So he decides to chuck the shitty U.S. of A. with its non-free health care, bigots, rat races, white people, processed food, world-threatening air conditioning, etc. and go to paradisaical Costa Rica. He's mugged by reality within a week. All the affordable huts are "e. coli factories" by his reckoning, and he finds himself moving unhappily from hut to hut. Next, he realizes he's in a damn jungle with no air conditioning. He has to soak his hats in vinegar to keep them from getting moldy. The overhead fan does nothing but stir the hot, steamy air. Then there's the people. The locals are all thieves and con-men. His fellow expats are Americans who barely give him the time of day, or loud, drunken, narcissistic, bigoted Europeans who curse the natives and the weather. Then there's the lifestyle. No Chinese restaurants! No Italian! No gourmet burgers! It's all this Costa Rican food day after day, night after night. No cinemas, no clubs, no hangouts where he speaks the language (of course he isn't learning Spanish). Oh, and medical care? Through the roof. He thought America was the only country in the world where you have to pay for high-quality medical care. He spent a fortune on I can't remember what -- he had an infection or mosquito bites or diarrhea or something that he never got in Berkeley. He's back in the racist hellhole of America, never to leave. He was real popular among the Kooks until he proved to be a recalcitrant Berniebot.
