I will not be willowed.
Libya is one of the most disastrous foreign policy decisions ever. Britain and France are mostly to blame and as usual , the false accusations the Left / Dems makes against the Right is exactly what the Left actually does. Britain and France brought along the willing Obama lapdog to do their dirty work . We had corralled Ghaddafi who was fighting the terrorists for his own purposes but it also served our purposes. The humanitarian excuse to take him out was the most obvious lie I've seen a government do in sometime. Libya was the real War for Oil. That it came back to bite them in the ass would be delicious if it didn't also effect me and other innocent citizens. I hope they choke on their greed and stupidity. I thing that is a whitworth with a scope. It was not a typical rifle, being a hexagonal bore that took a special hexagonal bullet. It was a muzzle-loader.
It may have just been a scoped Sprinfield, though. Gen. Grant, in his biography, also mentioned that some of the rifle bullets used towards the end of the war had fused explosive charges in them like a fused artillery shell, and he mentioned seeing the grey trails they left behind. He considered them as being cruel as they increased suffering without being more effective. Posted by: Kindltot at August 02, 2016 10:36 AM (ry34m) 138

Wall of text warning. General Sedgwick's last words:
Verbatim report made by General McMahon, who was at Sedgwick's side at his untimely death: I gave the necessary order to move the troops to the right, and as they rose to execute the movement the enemy opened a sprinkling fire, partly from sharp-shooters. As the bullets whistled by, some of the men dodged. The general said laughingly, "What! what! men, dodging this way for single bullets! What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." A few seconds after, a man who had been separated from his regiment passed directly in front of the general, and at the same moment a sharp-shooter's bullet passed with a long shrill whistle very close, and the soldier, who was then just in front of the general, dodged to the ground. The general touched him gently with his foot, and said, "Why, my man, I am ashamed of you, dodging that way," and repeated the remark, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." The man rose and saluted and said good-naturedly, "General, I dodged a shell once, and if I hadn't, it would have taken my head off. I believe in dodging. "The general laughed and replied, "All right, my man; go to your place." For a third time the same shrill whistle, closing with a dull, heavy stroke, interrupted our talk; when, as I was about to resume, the general's face turned slowly to me, the blood spurting from his left cheek under the eye in a steady stream. He fell in my direction ; I was so close to him that my effort to support him failed, and I fell with him. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 02, 2016 10:39 AM (9mTYi) 149

By the way, a specialized sharpshooter rifle back then was capable of serious accuracy. They weren't like the smooth bore muskets of earlier periods. With carefully worked up loads, faster rate of rifling (the better to stabilize the bullet), those long scopes, and special bullets, they could reliably hit a man's chest at hundreds of yards. Putting the shooter up a tree meant he could hit a target behind the front rank. It may not have been 'honorable' but think of the difference taking out a commanding officer or a canon crew could make in a battle.

Amb. Glaspie told Saddam exactly what every US ambassador had said to every troublesome Arab (and non-Arab Gulf region) despot since the British left the Gulf. There wasn't the slightest bit of misunderstanding.
If Saddam, that savvy geopolitician, had really done his homework, he would have recalled that the bellicose and tough US president Jimmy Carter had laid down a bright red line on powers attempting to gain control over the Gulf's oil resources (the immediate and de facto result of an unopposed annexation of Kuwait). Heck, he *might* have even figured things out by reaching ball ALL the way to 1987, where the US did a mini-war against Iran based on the actual but still convenient rationale of ....... wait for it ..... an attempt to damage and intimidate Kuwait. Saddam blundered, miscalculated - obviously. He didn't for one second think he could defeat the US - he assumed we wouldn't show up for the game, or that any level of pain would force us to make a deal (a typically idiotic and reckless miscalculation of his when dealing with matters outside his borders). But the unserious mess the US would become could be glimpsed in the Democrats, the press, and especially parts of the electorate, even then. IF background noise is making it difficult for you to hear conversation, a hearing aid will make the background noise louder and make the problem worse.
Posted by: Gastulite at August 02, 2016 10:48 AM (s70PD) Absolutely NOT true. This was true 20 years ago when my hearing started to fail at age 35. By the time I couldn't function in the working world without them, digital technology allowed for background noise filtering. I also strongly urge jwest to use an audiologist that is affiliated with an Ear Nose and Throat doctor. Much more reliable. Granted, the digital hearing aids will run around $2000 per ear, but in my case, functioning in the working world would have been severely limited. I like Oticon brand. So... 2232 years ago today, in the course of a single day, 60-80,000 men were killed on a field beneath the town of Cannae. Most were killed by hand weapons; some were trampled or asphyxiation in the crush. Only about 5,000 of the dead were from Hannibal's army -- all the rest were Romans.
Supposedly Hannibal collected a sack full of Senatorial rings. There were so many dead Senators the Roman Senate couldn't convene until they had an emergency election.
