This Just In: Bad Guys Commit Crimes...Good Guys Don't [CBD]

And Gun Thread, because you reprobates will turn it into one anyway.....

Vast majority of guns recovered by Pittsburgh police not in possession of legal owners

Nearly 80 percent of perpetrators carrying a gun recovered by Pittsburgh Police were not the lawful owners, a strong indication that theft and trafficking are significant sources of firearms involved in crimes in southwest Pennsylvania, a new University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health analysis reveals.

But the authors couldn't be content to report the numbers....they had to toss in the obligatory sneering oblique reference to the mantra of the academy: "We must do more about guns!" Never mind that they have the answer at their fingertips. Just enforce existing laws against...you know....theft!

Given the pandemic threat in the United States of firearm violence, immediate improvement in firearm surveillance is needed to save lives. It is estimated that there are more than 300 million guns in the U.S. And we know that firearm production is increasing. In 2013, nearly 11 million firearms were manufactured in the U.S., more than double the number produced in 2008.

This Orwellian statement suggests very little that doesn't run counter to the U.S. Constitution, and ignores the large amount of data that suggest firearm violence is decreasing. And if anyone can explain what "firearm surveillance" means, other than the obvious...registration and regular visits from our friendly neighborhood BATF SWAT teams, I'm all ears.

There is a AoSHQ Platinum membership with Troll-B-GonTM and ampersand utility for any Moron who finds some other holes in their interpretation of the data.

And take a look at a linked study in the lower left, conducted by Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Repeal of Missouri's background check law associated with increase in state's murders.

So we are to accept as dispassionate and unbiased research, a study that correlates complex societal events with the repeal of a single law that was in most respects duplicative of Federal and other laws, done by a school funded by and named after the most famous anti-gun politician in the United States.

I promise...just the tip!

******

And because this is a really nice looking pistol that Aetius451AD really, really needs.

10 I worry less about these historical data and the way they can use current (not fully formed trends.)

One of the things we could point to is that while gun ownership was going up, crime rates were going down. Now with a combination of the Ferguson effect and certain groups actively targeting police, I fear crime will be back on the rise.

This allows them another arrow in their quiver of "Think of the Children!"

how hard would it be for a straw purchaser to buy a gun "legally", give it to the intended thug, and later report it as "stolen"?

this could dovetail with the left wanting to increase gun crime to push for more control.

Unfortunately, that's not the whole story.. straw purchases account for a very large number of guns getting into the hands of gangbangers..

from the article:

"In 44.3 percent of the cases where the perpetrator was not the owner of the firearm, the police could not get in contact with the owner to find out how they lost possession of it. In cases where police made contact with the original owner, more than 30 percent said they were stolen, but only 57.9 percent of those had officially reported the theft prior to recovery by police."

leads to lots of questions.. what about the other 55%?

Only 30% were stolen! What about the other 70%?

Straw purchases would account for lots of them.. trafficking needs to be addressed. And our current laws make it very easy in some states.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 30, 2016 11:59 AM (Zu3d9)

Ok, well, hypothetically this would have happened around 20 years ago. Also, the person in question bought it for himself and liked the gun so much he wanted to give one to his father. Hypothetically he gave the one he had to his father for his birthday, but could never find the exact gun he liked again. This would cause him great sorrow. Hypothetically.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 30, 2016 12:01 PM (3ZoRf)

84 @64 yes. But.

You can't give it to someone out of state without doing a transfer through a FFL and with a background check.

If you know that the person you are giving it to cannot legally buy then it's a straw purchase.

Ravil Mingazov

Former Russian dancer approved for release.
This ethnic Tartar is the last Russian captive at Guantánamo. He says he fled his homeland, where he was once a Russian Army dancer, because Muslims were oppressed in the military. A federal court declared him unlawfully detained in 2010 but the Justice Department appealed that decision. Activists took up his cause and won him sympathy in unusual places. Across the years communities in western Massachusetts and Berkeley, California, offered him asylum, if U.S. law were to allow it. His first preference is to go to Nottingham, England, where his teenaged son lives with his ex-wife and her parents.

Of course Bezerkly and Masshole would fight over him. Doesnt see like the ruskies want him back.

I think the objection is that you've bought into the nonsense that we should be making an effort to 'keep guns out of the hands of criminals'. You can't. It's simply not possible.
The solution to gun involved crime is a predominantly armed populace. There isn't another option. People who won't defend themselves are going to victims sooner or later, either by the scary guy in the alley, or the scary guy with the IRS badge.

No.......and maybe. If you purchase with the intent of giving it as a gift to a family member who isn't a criminal, it's legal, but if your intent is to give it to a family member who IS a criminal it's illegal. But that assumes that you KNOW that the family member is a criminal who is prohibited from owning firearms. And how does the DA prove intent?

Then again, as I recall, the law and 4473 is written vaguely enough that even purchasing as a gift to a non-criminal is kind of gray area.

93 Not checking to see if there were responses but chi-town your leap to "straw purchases" as a big factor based only on the very very very dubious numbers for stolen and reported stolen is, um, dubious.

Self-reported data is always a problem in any social analysis. In this instance it renders things almost climate-change speculative.

Then I shoot my neighbor because the leaves from his tree blow onto my lawn. These things just kind of escalate until you have a full-blown pandemic.

128 Of course this general subject - what % of firearms used in crimes are legally owned by the perp - has been carefully avoided in most "research". Even as it emerged, instantly, as the central question in the whole discussion of "gun control" laws.

I recall Lott (I think) doing some very preliminary work on this a while ago, but running into a big data problem up front: very little data on this very item (captured perps using firearms they didn't legally own). It's not a category that police depts have had any reason to compile, in general.

The 80% number in this "study" is probably low-representative.

Obvious, glaring implication: legally-owned firearms in the possession of their owners are *not a relevant factor for actual violent crime, period*.

Of course when examined logically, even the whole background check/waiting period system has a trivial effect on firearms-related crime. But the mountain of unconstitutional and idiotic laws (esp. state laws) that continues to grow higher clearly has no public benefit.

He's had some gun exposure as a youngster, plinking with 22s and such. I look forward to geeking out with him on gun selection, but another thing I'm interested in is his reaction when I brief him up on CA laws, which just recently were escalated to the absurd level of background checks for ammo purchases.

I think disconnection (my awkward term) is a huge factor in the civic decay in the US, certainly in places like CA. Simply stated, if some govt. restriction or imposition or disaster doesn't directly, materially affect someone, within 48 hours - it may as well not have happened. Utter ignorance and indifference to anything outside their immediate daily life.

This phenomenon is on display, big-time, in CA firearms laws, in their hundreds - none of which have even the theoretical possibility of advancing any public purpose whatsoever.

162 Soviet Army chorus was a serious institution, you can still find their work doing patriotic, WWII, and Soviet music online. Powerful stuff. I'm betting their dance troupe would be a legacy of the Cossacks and their traditional dance, familiar to most people (recall the great scene in "Patton" of the Soviet dancers jumping atop the table where Patton and his staff were sitting).

And the USMC's top band, the President's Own, of course is quite elite. I believe the members are recruited out of civilian life, serious musicians. This may also be the case for other service bands.

Effect on public safety? Zilch - of course.

"Gun control" really is the quintessential case of America abandoning its unique great civic history. Obviously unconstitutional measures with no possible public benefit imposed to harass law-abiding citizens - to the seal-clapping of a dumbed-down, ignorant, and weasel-authoritarian-minded electorate. With no political backlash and a spectacular display of judicial legislating and lawlessness.

Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution is even better than the Second Amendment:

So even suggesting gun control would seem to be unconstitutional in Pennsylvania. Not that that stops anybody.

It's printed right onto the 4473's instructions.

181 At some point the left should realize they are singularly responsible for most of the gun sales over the past two decades. Every time they pander to their anti-gun donors implying that they will restrict or, wink wink nudge nudge, eliminate guns, gun sales skyrocket. And every time they go after a particular gun, that particular gun's sales go through the roof. But the biggest fail of this article is the obvious fact that criminals are not controlled by laws, only the law abiding are. Criminals are only controlled by the police and well armed civilians.

That, frankly, is as good a reason as any to make the decision to purchase and own.

If you can even borrow one, hold a pre "dash three" variant of a S&W Model 27, and not just hold it, but stare into it's every detail, from every angle, and be enthralled at the workmanship, detailing and breathtaking polish, bluing and overall precision of the thing.

And that's from the days preceding CNC machining and other such automation. Just machine tools, well set-up jigs, and highly skilled and experienced machinists who took no small pride in their crafts.

OM, that Ruger, though not as finely finished as the S&W, is still a classic in line, weight, balance and function.

I cannot think of a finer choice for a "first pistol", even though the tradition is to start with a .22 lr. Just buy some softly loaded rounds for yours to start with, find some quality instruction, and you'll not regret a single dollar's outlay.

Meanwhile, do study www.corneredcat.com for the best in knowledgeable, NO B.S., quality online instruction. Ms. Kathy Jackson is one of the nation's finest competitors and instructors. You can take her every word to the bank, I assure you.

There's a reason why AR-15s are so popular. Well, actually, lots of reasons.

One of them is that it's a military-grade weapon that can be easily handled by small women, unlike the M-1, which was pretty heavy.

Check your ammo. My GDR Mak (before that tragic accident) would eat anything, truncated cone Wolf, round-nose Russian, and the only misfire I had was with ammo that I had run through the washer and dryer by forgetting it in the pocket of some jeans, and I had a pop-no kick and got to play with a dowel and a mallet to drive the bullet out.

Then, look at your recoil spring, Wolf Springs sells new ones if you can't find them anywhere else.
Generally I haven't had trouble with the magazines.

The Bulgarian ones I found did not eat the truncated cone Wolf ammo well.

The Poles do good engineering I do admit. German level intricacies.

Recently I've argued with lefties online who want to ban ARs or ALL semi-autos, and I play the woman card on them, saying truthfully that I find my AR very comfortable to shoot. The thing would not cycle. I bought the gas system wrench and the P and #15 drill and got enough charcoal out of the gas system to make a briquette, heh. I donl't think those officers ever cleaned the thing.

I cleaned it real good including the camber with a chamber bush. It cycles just fine now.

I have a magazine question. It came with 1 original magazine that has 6 tack welds on the magazine stop at the top back of the magazine. I bought 3 more magazines form Brownells with just 2 tack welds and the whole darn magazine stop just sheared off when I put it into the rifle.

The original surplus M-14 20 rounders cost between 50 and 100 each. But I found some from a Taiwan supplier to their military with 4 tack welds that cost about 17 each from Cheaper Than Dirt. Did you ever use those?

Are they any good?

216 @206, Mike Hammer "700 dollar M!A- I'm always the last to hear of these things".

Well Mike, as one moron to another let me clue you in. I don't generally spread this info around but since you're a AOSHQ guy here is the deal.

Shhhhh, don't spread this around beyond AoSHQ. Lets keep it in the "circle of trust"...heh.

1.) Police Surplus- they are affordable. Contrary to leftist popular Press Propaganda, they are rarely shot in the line of duty. Some of those officers don't even practice that much with them so the firearm will be lightly fired. Now it will have holster wear. It own't be cleaned. It may not look pretty but it will be 100% functional (except for the occasional coffee and doughnut stain" after cleaning and checking over.

This M!A was missing a sling swivel and a front ferrule, had a piece of duct tape on it with the officers name, heh. The black fiberglass stock had the paint worn off in areas, but it was well 700 bucks for a M!A Scout w/ 18 inch barrel.

I bought 4 police surplus pistols I recently picked up at the 01 dealer.

a.) A manhurin 73R in .357 (French Po-Po pistol)_ Ive wanted one for years. You can't wear the barrel or chambers out in 1 lifetime even with heavy firing. They had one they used for training the police in France with over a million rounds put through it. BArrel was not shot out yet. If they made a pistol like that today it would cost 2 or 3 grand. I would rank it as equal to a Korth. (4-6 grand revolver)

b.) A model 10-8 Smith and Wesson, 4 inch heavy barrel.
c.) A Glock 22 in 40 cal (Gen 3)
d.) A Glock 22 in 40 cal (Gen 4) with an extra mag.

All on the cheap. I'm buying mostly pistols now because I only have about 6 slots left in the safes for rifles but I can still cram heaps of pistols up on the top shelves.

2.) Look for the police auction sites on the internet. Search 'Police trade in firearms for sale" and various permutations on that theme. They sell pistols, rifles, shotguns, sometimes ammo, duty belts, holsters, magazines, tactical gear all on the cheap.

And remember.....You heard it here on AoSHQ first.

You will not believe what they sell these things for.

They all work great.

223 Here's my offer: the cities should go into the areas with the highest number of gun deaths (guess where that would be) and confiscate all the illegal guns. I'm sure all the Democrat mayors who decry "gun violence" would agree with that.

Then we can talk about gun control.

225 #219 Left the rear sight as it was, just added a couple of white dots. Picked the highest white dot I could find in Brownells for a Novak setup and my guy just widened the cut in the slide to accept it.

226 @127 richard mcenroe "I had new front sights installed".

Yep, I know what you mean about the Toks. I have quite a few of them but I just recently bought a M88 (a new manufactured Zastava" in 9 mm.

I was shooting at a chest sized steel plate at 25 yards. It was good on the vertical but horizontal was so far off I had to aim 6 inches right from the edge of the steel plate to hit the thing.

None of my other toks in 7.62 x 25 (Chinese, Romanian, Polish, Yugoslavian) were that far off. Geez!

I used to own a Ruger Blackhawk .357. It was a beautiful gun but I had a couple issues with it. First, the grip was a bit small for my hand and as a result, it got tiring when you put a lot of rounds through it in one outing. Second, the empty cartridges would sometimes get stuck in the cylinder and it was difficult to push them out. It sure went where I aimed it though!

Interesting. I agree with the need for better and more extensive training. However his thoughts on when lethal force is justified go a bit too far. If I started blasting somebody because I thought they made the oft-cited "furtive movement" that cops use as justification for shooting, I'd be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Congrats.

If I had to bet, I'd say that around 40% or more of nationwide AR sales in the past 20 years has been for that very reason. Also known as "Because Fuck You, Cocksucker. That's Why."

234 I'm not sure why anyone doesn't have an AR - excellent mid range accuracy, easy to shoot, gender friendly (noise, recoil). AK's are for fun - fun as hell to shoot but dreadful platform overall.

235 Straw purchases are against the law.
---
no.... really?

the definition of what a straw purchase does vary from state to state, depending on what additional laws have been passed at that level, above and beyond what the feds say.

IOW, a gift purchase in one state is perfectly legal, and a felony in another.

236 AK's are for fun - fun as hell to shoot but dreadful platform overall.

not necessarily: it all depends on what you want the platform to do.

the AR certainly gives you more options than the AK, but, within its envelope, the AK gets 'er done quite well

238 Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my AK's, especially my Saiga but overall, less accurate, too heavy...but they are idiot proof and must have been hell on wheels in full auto - on both sides of the action. Likely my last resort choice next to my Beneeli M4 when the day comes.

242 Wait, what...80% of criminal perpetrators don't obey gun laws? Unpossible! Someone ought to make a law against that.

243 I'm back from the beach.

Hairyback Guy, if you are still reading, I would be cautious about polishing the feedramp to start with, I don't know what it would do, but I suspect it would be hard to undo.

One thing about some arms: if you do not give enough resistance to AKs and some 1911s they may stovepipe on you, since you are the anvil that the recoil action is acting against.
A friend's wife could jam an AK and a 1911 because she would rock back to easy. She's a small thing so that is part of the reason.

We never had her try a Makarov since she had small hands too, and they are a bit snappy. I wonder if that might be part of the problem.
