Good afternoon animal lovers. The damn computer took a dump this past week. So, this old dog is trying to learn new ~~tricks~~ computer & programs. Hoping that photos show up without blowing up Ace's blog and his bandwidth allowance for the year.

I have a question. I give my dog Science Diet and they have a canned food that has beef and barley or chicken and barley. Anyway, have any of you heard of some dogs having digestion problems with barley? Not the fermented kind, the kind in the dog food.

But they are better. Case in point:

On occasion, I hurt my cat - not seriously, and of course completely by accident. Once I didn't know she was nearby and WHAP my elbow connected with her face - or again I open the refrigerator door and WHAP again. When this happens, she goes away and hides. Then a couple hours later, she comes out and snuggles as though nothing had ever happened.

People, on the other hand, need religions featuring God giving a sermon commanding people to forgive each other - and we still don't.

Conclusion: Cats > people. (Mice and moths may disagree, understandably.)

42 Those photos are wonderful, even the Golden Retriever showing me up on the computer. One of my best friends got a Rottweiler pup a few months ago. She is an absolute sweetheart. But doesn't realize she is a 60 pound (and growing) dog with a puppy playfulness. I'm a hit because I'm big enough to still handle her like a puppy.

I've never heard of barley specifically causing problems, but it's not providing any nutrition to your dog, either. Dogs are obligate carnivores, so any grains/ non-meat products just go straight through them.

I had a rescue Sheltie for a while but he didn't get along with my German Shepherd so I had to find a new home for him. They need lots of space and running time. I did find a good home for him though with some folks out in the country.

53 Speaking of dog names, since we named our Bailey 6 yrs ago I've run into a number of other owners of Baileys. Checked a list, it's #1 for male dogs, #9 for females (ours is female).

BTW Chi, Tucker was #16 for male dogs.

Been working with Spastic Lab this year on retrieving multiple objects (all training dummies) and she now remembers and locates 7 separate items.

Prior she's only done 2 or 3 consecutive birds. This was done just to see how many she could do. I think she can better 7,but for now that will do.

To date, we've not lost a bird that was downed.

58 Dont you remember Jessica, the Rino? Rescued as a baby and lived with the game warden? Jessica would sneak inside the house for treats. What I found interesting is that when opening the house door, Jessica accidentally stepped on one of their dog's paws who yelpd. Jessica immediately lifted her leg and backed away.

Jessica would sleep on cushions on their porch. The lady of the house wd give Jessica a soothing massage with baby oil and then cover her with a quilt.

My rescue Shepherd came with a host of GI issues All canned or bagged foods give him diarrhea and/or make him throw up. So, by trial and error we have learned to rotate him through three different homes made recipes: beef tips and barley, turkey and rice, and talapia and sweet potatos. He keeps them all down and inside and seems to absorb everything. No vomiting or diarrhea for quite a while now, and he's gone from 55 lbs. when we got him to 90 lbs. now.

66 A older guy at the job I went to today had his chocolate lab with him. We're renovating a apartment building with 3 stories and 6 sections. That dog wondered down the block but in eye sight first thing but he whistled and she came running back. All morning that dog followed him up and down the steps and into every room he went to.

I had the food allergy panel (blood work) done on my Great Dane.

She's allergic to, among other things, rice, sweet potatoes, chicken, pork, eggs and fish. So that leaves beef.

We buy beef by the truckload, and mix it in with the ZD dog food for allergy-problematic dogs -- all vets carry it -- very pricey stuff.

You sound like an awesome owner. Good for your GD, I bet s/he's a beauty.

And you're right, with large breeds it costs a lot to work through those kind of issues. Mine eats 10-15 lbs. of meat from Whole Foods every week. He's a beast but I love him.

77 Since GI problems came up, one of my labs became sick last night. Threw up, then ran thru the bedroom super soaker squirt gun like diarrhea. I have to say I'm impressed with the Bissell Spotbot Pet Deluxe cleaner. Set it down on the spot and it cleans away for three minutes. So far looks like every thing is coming out of the carpet.

Nice pets, if you can call a cat a pet. They're a predator species that accepts domestication. I can believe that line that they would eat you if they could.

One was gotten by coyotes, the other we found freshly dead one afternoon in the driveway, cause of death unknown.

We had a Boston Bull Terrier named Steve. My dad named him that, I have no idea why. Steve aged out and was replaced by... Jeffery. My dad had an odd sense of humor.

98 93: Some rescue outfits are real jerks with the false representations. Before we got Ole my mom brought home a dog that was fearful to the point of nipping at men in baseball caps. Rescue snottily announced that the next adopter had no issue and sent home a young parvo puppy when mom and dad went together a month or so later.

Poor little thing did not survive the parvo and the rescue implied we must have exposed it to a huge virus load cuz 'it was vaccinated'. They wrote off the transferable but not refundable adoption fee at that point and Ole came from a different rescue a couple months later.

105 OT... Watching "The Right Stuff" on the tube, one of my favorite movies (Also loved the book "Space" by James Michener(?), as all that author's novels were classics in my humble opinion.). Reminds me of my childhood and growing up in the sixties. War, riots, political assassinations on one side of the ledger, and on the other side muscle cars, the interstate highway system, great music, and the space race, culminating in America putting men on the moon in July of 1969. A 14 year old me was in Coeur d'Alene Idaho at the National Boy Scout Jamboree when Neil Armstrong took his first step onto the lunar surface, listening on the radio.

A great time to grow up. Yes, the nation was divided, but the hopes and aspirations of the free world were firmly on Americas shoulders, and we weren't afraid to lead.

What do 14 year olds aspire to in this country today? We have one presidential candidate that wants to revert to a neoisolationist role in the world, and another that just wants to sell the country to the highest bidder. NONE of the candidates that threw their hat in the ring last year had the gravitas and vision to inspire this country.

The world needs a bold and decisive American leader that can take the bull by the horns and steer the course of history, which is what American leaders did in the past. If this doesn't happen soon, I fear civilization will atrophy into what future historians will refer to as the second "Dark Age".

A friend from college would go home occasionally and bring his very large rottweiler back for the weekend.

The thing loved to stand next to people and just lean against them until they fell over or had to step away.

I wasn't aware that dogs could be bred for physical comedy, but this one was a doozy...and lovable and friendly and dopey.

Basically, one of my best friends since kindergarten is trying to help her senile mom finish liquidating her deceased cousin's estate. She can't make any decisions, and it's all come down to finding a good home for this sweet African Grey who outlived her owner. The bird is living in the house with people hired to take care of the bird and the house--and a goldfish. Can you believe it?

I can't take on any more birds--they're way too much trouble-- but the senile mom loves me and we're going to fake like I'm taking the bird to live with me. It'll be going to another trusted friend though.

Ayayay, my friend is SO relieved to get this going, even if it takes some acting ability and a bit of theater.

Operation Birdlift is a go.

A lot of Rotties are very gentle dogs. I had a female Rottie that was the sweetest dog in the world. Little girl literally broke her fall with a hand to her belly and she didn't even grumble.

When I was a young kid, I would adopt dogs (some being the neighbors we would later find out). The second dog I adopted was half wolf and half Huskie so I named him E.T. That dog was super protective of me, was always by my side, large enough that I could ride him like a horse, and was better than adult supervision around the neighborhood.

Sadly, I had to give E.T. away because he was eating the ducks from the duck pond. It still hurts over 30 years later.

179 I once did a bad thing concerning horse names. I had a really nice cremello stallion named "Pegaz" as a consignment horse. I called him White Devil, or Whitey for short. I sold him to a wealthy older dressage trainer. Good lord she was mad that he only answered to Whitey! So every year she would leave him with me, while she went to Boston for the summer. Always with instructions never to call him whitey. Seems if he so much as hears "whitey" he won't answer to "Pegaz" for weeks. So I had to call him Pegs. Which the lady hated somewhat less. But that horse really loved whitey as a name and didn't care that it wasn't as noble as he looked. (Admittedly he was a super fancy horse, pearl colored and with ice blue eyes.) Most of my horses have pretty normal nicknames like Diablo, Boo, Gumdrop, Queenie. Drives the dressage and eventing people crazy.
