Ack.
The conclusion of Iowa v. Bismarck article is silly. He states Iowa wins because longer range radar so it would damage Bismarck before Bismarck got close enough for its radar. Agh. Those long LONG range shots are inaccurate - even with radar assisstance. If the BBs are closing they'll both be close for radar not to matter after very few minutes. Iowa probably has better armor so it has the edge but it's not 100% sure who'll win. Posted by: ArthurK at July 30, 2016 10:37 PM (h53OH) 12

Iowa versus Bismarck? Seriously?
Who cares about that German second-rate battleship? The important match would be USS Iowa versus IJN Yamato. And while I've never sat down to run the numbers, I suspect that the Yamato might very well have been able to handle the Iowa. Oh, and the author conjectures that having to pull USN assets out of the Pacific to hunt down the Bismarck would have delayed Coral Sea and Midway. Someone should tell that idiot writer that Coral Sea and Midway were instigated by the *Japanese*, not the US. So pulling USN assets out of the Pacific wouldn't have delayed the dates at all. As for the latest Clinton crime family investigation, how many ways are there to say the rule of law was ignored, but there is no crime because <insert your favorite Clinton> did not have the requisite intent??? As Joseph Heller may have written: For a crime to exist one must knowingly break the law. The Clintons know the rule of law does not apply to the Clintons. Thus, the Clintons can never knowingly break the law. Ergo, no crime exists.

Doctrinal mission windows. In theory the Iowa was an "escort battleship" built to provide protection and screening for the Essex class, as such she was never really intended to be the "queen of her flotilla" the South Dakotas OTOH were the centerpiece of theirs. It is in practice as was the case in real life a distinction with little difference IMHO. Iowa was really an evolution of the departures from historic norms in the "triangle balance" in Capital Ship Theory that South Dakota started. Prior to the SD class US theory was a Capital Ship had to be armored to survive its own weapons suite, and would sacrifice speed for lethality.... the SD Class and Iowa OTOH were not armored to endure their 16 inchers, and would not go below certain speed thresholds. The SD design was finalized when the BB was still considered the "centerpiece" and the CV was the faster than battleline screening platform and recon wing, by the time the Iowa was being gamed out it was generally understood the future of naval aviation was at a minimum to be an independent force, if not the centerpiece of doctrine. Iowa's 16 inchers were a better weapon by a nose than the SDs, fire control was the same, protection was the same, in the end the SDs were the beginning of the end of the BB dominance. Iowa was tied in largely with the CV groups b/c she had to be given her raw speed....the SDs engaged in more activity in the war than the Iowa class and had actual engagements with enemy vessels. It just seems to me that in practice the Iowa class wound up being a different animal YMMV and no disrespect intended. Posted by: sven10077 at July 30, 2016 11:14 PM (SzZnW) 100

Well at a minimum she was designed to "be able to do so" and given the small number of BBs that could run as fast as the CVs it was inevitable they would spend and exert most of their effort in that role.... funny fact, the Navy was sorely tempted in the late 50s to take the rear turret off the SD class boats in an effort to try to get her speed up to 31.5 knots so she could act as a back up CV Fast Carrier Escort to the Iowas.... it was shelved when the rear hull wound up needing reworked. Whereas our "flashless" powder, was still emitting black-powder grade fireballs, all the way till when the last BB was retired. The third? Who the hell knows. 24(?!) years on I am still trying to figure out why the director thought that was a good idea. True.
Something similar could be said about the gasoline fueled 75mm gun Sherman. Posted by: JEM at July 30, 2016 11:36 PM (o+SC1) At least that one had some justification in logistics. The entire U.S. Army fleet of trucks, cars and other mechanized transport at the time, was nearly 100% gasoline, across the board. Only some of the heaviest equipment was Diesel powered, and the hard truth is that we hadn't yet geared up production of the smaller, lighter diesel engines such as would power a deuce-n-half truck, etc. I forgot the designation, but the tank larger than the Sherman, ran a pair of Cadillac gasoline engines. V8s or V-12s, I forget. Germany really had evolved the Diesel to a very high degree, even having some effort towards a Diesel engine heavy bomber at one point. Those early Shermans though, equipped with the radial aircraft engines and associated avgas, really did earn their reputations as Rolling Ronsons. But in return, they got a pretty nifty power to weight ratio, and were still effective within the limits of their too-small-for-the-times gun. The truly frightening thing. We were in a better military and strategic position in 1940, than we are now. We've got a great, but worn out and hollowed shell of a military. And spinning up manufacturing to war time capacity? 135 As the thread has taken a turn toward science fiction, I have a question:
Why is Ellen Ripley considered to be such a hero? I have my reason; she saved the cat. Besides Jones, she saved herself and an escape pod, and she killed the Alien. But the ship, its cargo and the other six crew members - all gone. Was there something I missed? Was the Alien planning to invade Earth or something? I don't get it. Posted by: FireHorse at July 30, 2016 11:28 PM (ZihpT) The corporation was trying to bring the Xenomorph back to earth. Trump made a mistake IMHO, but it wasn't with what he said.
The mistake was agreeing to be interviewed by George Stephanopoulos, the same dude who was Clinton White House communications director at one point. Also the same dude that gave either $75k or $100k to the Clinton Foundation without disclosing it (until it was discovered by other means). This is related to last week's mention about the Texas Aggie (can't do ampersands) bonfire disaster featured in the show "In an Instant". (I don't even remember that, weirdly. I was in a very transitional stage of life then, though.) But I watched it and it brought to mind another disaster in TX in 1937 where that school blew up. That book is called "Gone at 3:17". These types of events are fascinating to me just because of the precarious nature of life. Just thought I'd share because these things affect me, and both were brought to my attention here. So I went to the beach today, Road's End at Lincoln City, and it was sunny and bright and the tide was going out.
I met some kids who built RC planes out of "Dollar Tree foam board" and actuators, including one flying wing. I had a decent lunch, but my girlfriend decided to not get the whole Dungeness crab for lunch - and it was a near thing too. I went to Bobs Beach Books, but I admit the Bob's Books in Newport is far better since it has an aviation and history section in the back. I walked bare-foot on the sand and nearly wore all my callouses off my feet. And I dropped my cell phone in the Pacific ocean and only noticed it missing after I walked another half mile. So we went back and looked for it, and I actually found it. Soaked in salt water for a good half hour. So tomorrow I am buying another cell phone. Think about it: This election is about Hillary Clinton. It always has been. Either She's demonstrated herself to be too corrupt to hold the office or not enough people care. It doesn't matter what Trump does or says or even who the Republican candidate is. Hillary Clinton's polling numbers would be the same now if she were running against Cruz or Walker or Perry or Jeb.

>> Kind of a shame the US didn't follow through with the
>> Montana-class battleships: When you look at the sheer industrial effort involved in producing even the hulls of something like Dreadnought-era battleships, and think about who's even capable of doing that now... The real question when you're talking about something post-Iowa is whether it's significantly more resilient to potential threats than something thinner. The decision in the late '40s and early '50s was, I think, that a nuke renders a foot of hardened armor redundant. But in subsequent years you get into considerations of the likelihood of tactical nuclear warfare. Posted by: JEM at July 31, 2016 12:15 AM (o+SC1) 267

--------------- From what I understand, part of the problems in the fourth movie may have been due to some last minute script changes. John Conner was apparently supposed to be just a background character. But then they got Christian Bale to play him, and... On the other hand, there's also a "John Conner really died and we're faking that he's still alive with a terminator body" ending that the writer wanted to try and do instead of the actual ending. Those in authority apparently shot him down, though. Posted by: junior at July 31, 2016 12:20 AM (Xt19I) 291

A nuke would have to retire from the battle after absorbing but a fraction of the damage that a steam turbine ship would handle. Similarly, gas turbines would offer layers of redundancy and flexibility that a nuke couldn't duplicate. CVNs, conversely, aren't really intended to mix it up in the ship to ship slugfest roles, and so are very well suited to their tasks. I'd love to see a BB, with gas turbine plants widely separated in individual engineering spaces, and with the underhull lines of the S.S. United States. Yeah, a 40kt. Battleship. Now that would be all kinds of kick-ass cool, wouldn't it! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at July 31, 2016 12:25 AM (v5iqM) 306

298 I liked Signs, sort of. The problem with his movies is that aside from Unbreakable, the entire movie is a setup for the 'twist' so that one suffers a bit for that.

liked Signs, despite some goofy plot holes, for two
major reasons. The first is how all the seemingly unrelated events and other things all converged at the end. The other was the restoration of faith because of it. Posted by: Insomniac at July 31, 2016 12:21 AM Yeah, Signs is one of those movies that I give a pass to on plot/logic holes, because the story is told well enough to make it work. Plus it's well put together and has a creepiness and sense of foreboding. It's a weird ass flick, but I enjoy watching it. The story is nonsense, but it's sci/fi and has a made up tale vibe about it that works, as opposed to a narrative that is meant to be taken as "this literally happens". From what I understand, part of the problems in the fourth movie may have been due to some last minute script changes.
Posted by: junior **** There are also major inconsistencies as well. That giant robot sneaks up on the people in that defunct gas station? Really? Then people are seen sitting around fires despite an earlier mention that fires attract hunter-killers (thermal). Next up, the rivers and streams are "polluted" with machines that kill humans who venture too close, yet the idiots in the helicopter are maybe a foot or two off the surface? We are to believe that people so stupid survived into adulthood in a post apocalyptic world? Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale-Skeet Surfer at July 31, 2016 12:29 AM (hVdx9) 317

My ship escorted what was left of the Long Beach up to Puget Sound for scrapping. At that point, all that was left was the hull. The superstructure and everything else above the main deck were gone and she was under tow by the USNS Navajo. The trip was supposed to be made at about 12 knots, but we got caught in a storm just south of LA and were in it almost to the Oregon border at 3kts. About 90% of the crew was down with seasickness for three days because we were taking the storm off the port side the whole time. We couldn't turn into the wind because that would have kept us from remaining on station if the Navajo needed assistance. Posted by: Country Singer at July 31, 2016 12:43 AM (GUBah) 342

Even if you accept his incoherent, off-the-cuff speaking style, this sort of wording in a written press release is not professional. And Trump says this a lot. He often says people "shouldn't be allowed to say" something or suggests restricting the freedom of the press. It's a pattern. German Panzers and Tigers weren't diesel, like it said in the Patton movie. They had Maybach gasoline engines. Now, it was pretty low-octane, especially by the end of the war, but, not diesel. The weak point of the Sherman was not the gasoline, but the ammunition stored in the outboard sponsons. That was what went up so easily with just one hit.

The horde is a wondrous font of technical knowledge.
Had always thought it was primarily the fuel that made Shermans so vulnerable. Somewhat related, to those interested the book on Pearl Harbor by Alan Zimm is quite interesting. He examines in detail the planning and execution of the operation and shows what a mess it was. And the pathologies of the Japanese planning and execution, which luck and surprise negated in this one instance, were clearly present in the rest of the war. Lots of interesting small issues (such as the fact that the fierce warrior ethic made for some pretty poor fighter pilots in terms of their effectiveness). Trump is running for President. Even if you accept his incoherent, off-the-cuff speaking style, this sort of wording in a written press release is not professional.
And Trump says this a lot. He often says people "shouldn't be allowed to say" something or suggests restricting the freedom of the press. It's a pattern. And people here were rightfully upset at press attacks on Patricia Smith. Those attacks were unacceptable. I assume that everyone also feels these attacks on the Khans are equally beyond the pale. There were two designs considered to be the Amerikabomber, one was essentially a winged rocket based on the Sanger antipodal bomber design, where the re-entry angle was made to be steep so it would skip against the upper atmosphere and so would extend the range.
the other was a giant jet powered flying wing design. None of them were even at the proto-type design. The closest was the antipodal bomber, and that would require both a refueling station in the Pacific, and a rocket that could be trusted to work twice reliably since it would be refueled and flown back to Germany. The V-2 rocket engine was not up to this, the other rockets like the one in the ME-163 were a possibility but no-where close to being scaled up. It depends upon the variant in question with each type. Generally speaking, though, of the most numerous types, the T-34 had better armour all round, plus it was sloped effectively. Though to be fair to the Sherman, by the time the Germans are using L48 75's and up on most Panzers, the difference between the two not that significant. Sloped and somewhat thicker armour at longer ranges would make a difference, though. Posted by: otho at July 31, 2016 01:26 AM (EWg9n) 400
T-72/T-80s will pop like corks because there is a fuel line that runs on the outside around the turret base. Plus because of the auto-loader, the ammo door in combat is always open.

Each Tiger or Panther could kill 4 M-4 Shermans and there was always a fifth or a sixth Sherman out there shooting up the German.
That is a thing many novices forget, the early PzKws really did not mount that impressive of a main gun. I think the II or the III only had a 20mm. And the IVs had a low velocity 75mm IIRC. Then T-34s started coming out German ears. And the high velocity guns like the Pak 40 75mm were mounted to tanks. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 31, 2016 01:31 AM (3d5xg) 407

Anna, I can't answer your question authoritatively. So far (2/3 thru the book), there were I believe two specific spots where Zimm disputes Prange's take on certain matters.
Have not read either of those Prange books, so I don't know where overlap/conflict might exist. Did Prange delve into the incoherence of the Pearl Harbor operation in the context of Japan's existing larger war strategy, or the shoddy planning (failure to achieve surprise was raised by Yamamoto very late in the fall, and Genda and Fuchida really did nothing about it), the pointless risks to surprise for no good reason in the form of midget subs and cruiser float-plane recon missions, the total lack of comms and command and control during the attack, Fuchida's disastrous fumbling of an already lame signal-flare comms plan, the chaos and actual low effectiveness of the torpedo attacks, and the stupid allocation of attacks by dive bombers in the second wave? These are just some of the highlights that Zimm documents. But I have no idea how Prange covered these aspects. Posted by: rhomboid at July 31, 2016 01:32 AM (QDnY+) 409

The Pz II had a 20mm autocannon; the Pz III started with a 37mm, then a short-barreled 50mm, then a longer barreled version. The Pz IV started out with the short-barreled 75mm howitzer, then got the 75mm L48 version, which it kept until the end of the war. The additional variants of all those tanks (weapons wise) are almost too numerous to count. Posted by: Obakeinu at July 31, 2016 01:39 AM (ry4ab) 411

Posted by: Anna Puma at July 31, 2016 01:18 AM The Germans had Pz-4's that were capable of dealing with T-34's as early as late 41(?), but not in numbers until sometime in 42. The problem was though the guns were reasonably effective at most ranges, the Mk-4's weren't very well armoured themselves, making them vulnerable, considering the numbers of T-34's. The Panther didn't get fielded until mid 43 and the Tiger 1 was introduced in late 42, deployed earlier than the Panther. As great as the Panther was, my take is that it was essentially a waste, production/cost wise. It was expensive to make and more Tiger 1's and Panzer 4's would have suited their needs (already in production), than the Panther and Tiger 2. Posted by: otho at July 31, 2016 01:42 AM (EWg9n) 415

As noted somewhere, this article points out that an Australian sex survey lists 33 different genders from which participants must choose:
http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/sex/ this-question-about-gender-identity-has-33-possible-answers/ news-story/66b72adfbc566d29453581cc71279d6b So I went a step further and actually clicked through to the survey itself at http://www.australiansexsurvey.com.au/ (not recommended -- the whole survey is a total digital mess), and discovered something even more: not only do they offer 33 different gender identities for participants, but that is actually insufficient and they also have an "Other (please describe briefly) ________" option for gender as well. So I decided to fill out the whole survey (took way too long) just so I could fill in this answer for my gender identity: --- "I have 14 penises sprouting from my forehead, but each one has a mini-vagina at the tip, and I am also from the Poltroon Galaxy where every living being is a gender we call "XQJZRRRRRrrrpp!!!" which you must address me by (AND pronounce correctly) else I will throw a tantrum and pout and you will have to go to jail for the hate crime of disrespecting my delusional hallucinations." --- So, now somewhere in some database of official survey results, that is one of the "genders" which they must release with the final report. That thought alone made the whole thing worth it. Posted by: zombie at July 31, 2016 01:43 AM (jBuUi) 417

Low effectiveness of the torpedo attacks? California sank in the mud from them. West Virginia was torpedoed and sank. Oklahoma capsized from the torpedo hits. The obsolete battleship Utah took two torpedoes and capsized. Cruiser Ogala also sank.
The second wave dive bombers got distracted as USS Nevada tried to make a break for the open ocean. So they went after the battleship in the hope of sinking her in the main channel. Instead the battleship was beached at Hospital Point. Prange was always mentioning in the books the rivalry between the Navy and Army in regards to strategic planning. More mention of the lack of planning is mentioned in Miracle at Midway as the Japanese flounder for what to do after their initial attacks had gone so well. The float plane reconnaissance can be excused as the Japanese needing up to the minute intel that their spy in the Japanese consulate couldn't provide. Fuchida would not have had any strategic input, Gendou and Yamamoto's staff would have been putting it all together. And remember during the planning and training for Operation Hawaii it was Nagumo who was being the old lady pestering the attack plan brain trust for answers. He fully expected to lose a good chunk of his fleet in the attack. As for the mania for midget submarines Prange never offered delved too deeply into the psychology but did note how they could have compromised everything. And they almost did but USS Ward's alert got delayed. But even if Kimmel and Husband had reacted to midget submarine message, it would probably have meant all the ships going to General Quarters. Raising steam and trying to get out to sea where at least five Japanese submarines were waiting. And it would have meant those ships in deep water and First Air Fleet zipping in. Meanwhile at Hickam and Bellows plus Ewa, mechanics would have been running around trying to unpack planes, refuel them, arm them, and wake up pilots hung over from Saturday night; if a Lt. Kermit had believed Opana Point and had training on what to do. The death toll would have probably higher and ships sunk in deep water could not be recovered. But it's also true that very many tanks in 1939 had armor thicknesses between 1/2" and 1-1/2". There were of course some with thicker armor (Matilda II: ~3", Char-B) but they were not plentiful. Of course, there were the KV-1 and KV-2 tanks (big or high velocity guns (for 1939) and 3" of armor all over), which caused many Germans to foul their pantaloons. Posted by: Arbalest at July 31, 2016 01:57 AM (FlRtG) 431
The Tiger I was outdated by early 1944. New Allied
tank-mounted guns could knock holes in it by then, and its slow speed meant that it was vulnerable to being outmaneuvered. Posted by: junior at July 31, 2016 01:47 AM On some AFV's. The Tiger 1 was less resilient in 44 than 43, for sure, but, in most cases it was still tough to take out and it's 88 gun would remain more than enough for anything bar the lS-2 and Pershing (and a couple of others) at longer ranges... and there weren't that many of those. Yeah, it was slowish, but they were in full production and did their job in slowing down advances in defence. The Panther was better suited to offensive mobile operations, which the Germans weren't doing much of, by the time it becomes a regular fixture. Don't get me wrong... it as a brilliant all round tank... but, it's gun was only marginally better than the 88 and it's armour was surprisingly thin all round (though sloped). It was very expensive to make and IMHO, wasn't what they really needed at the time, compared to more 4's and Tiger 1's. Lack of air cover made it all rather moot anyway, I guess.
Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at July 31, 2016 12:25 AM (v5iqM) Well, a nuclear-powered ship is a steam turbine ship, just with a different source of fire to the boilers. Oh, yeah, the T-34/85 could trouble a Tiger-1, by mid 44 and the Russians made a stack of those. But, the Tiger-1 was still holding up relatively well against those, especially on the front armour. The 88 still had the upper hand over the 85 gun. The upshot though, is the Panther wasn't much better against the T-34/85 gun wise and was very vulnerable on the sides. If the Germans weren't on the defensive so much by 44, the Panther may have been a game changer.

German battleship Tirpitz lurking in its Norwegian fjord was an eternal menace to Allied convoys.
In early '42 after almost getting ambushed by a Royal Navy carrier, the battleship was ordered to never sail if a carrier was reported. So Chariots, X-Craft, and finally Lancaster bombers succeeded in sinking the battleship in its lair. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 31, 2016 02:16 AM (3d5xg) 446

Anna, you really should read Zimm's book.
Not gonna go step by step, but in summary bullet point response: * low effectiveness of torpedo attacks vs. what should have been achieved, even with Fuchida blowing surprise with his botched signal flares - Utah was known "no shoot" target (torpedoes from that group of planes ended doing little damage, and they made no effort to seek valuable alternatives), WV and OK took almost all the torpedoes actually launched at Battleship Row as the restricted approach problem was never addressed realistically in planning, and the planes shot down likely wouldn't have been with surprise and diverse approach paths * Zimm says intel *was* up to date from diplomatic source, in fact this brings up another problem - no scenario for "no carriers" was planned or practiced - and in any case there was no way for the scout planes to communicate any "intel" to the attackers, already in the air - so there was no possible benefit to what was already a superfluous undertaking * Fuchida, Genda, and fighter commander did in fact huddle to respond to Yamamoto's "what if we don't achieve surprise" question - and made no serious effort (of course surprise *was* achieved, but benefits thereof materially reduced by botched flare operation and resultant "early" attacks by dive bomber on Ford Island) * 2nd wave dive bomber attack on Nevada made no sense in Japan's own terms due to their understanding of general-purpose bomb effectiveness against battleships (minimal - this is why only armor-piercing bombs from level bombers were allocated to battleships) - cruisers were the primary targets, and valuable/vulnerable ones, for the 2nd wave bombers (who BTW were, insanely, given altered targeting priorities *as they sat on the flight deck with their engines warming up*!! - yet another extremely poor aspect of the operation), Nevada damage was very lucky and still wouldn't have forced grounding w/out a huge unforced damage control error on the ship * subs: the large force deployed to Hawaiian waters achieved almost nothing even with the targets they had, don't think we can just assume they'd have done much with the few ships that might have flushed out of the harbor It's only 380 pages, worth a read. If he has many of his facts (as opposed to interpretations) wrong, I'd be surprised. And the lack of rigorous planning and realistic training, the slipshod operational details, definitely were characteristic of future Japanese performance. So it's interesting in that regard as well. I am not sure where Zimm is getting the support for how ill-trained the Operation Hawaii strike force was.
The flare gun is called the vagaries of first contact. Things will go wrong and to expect perfection is to ask for defeat. That seems to be his biggest point doesn't it, Fuchida fumbled the ball. But I am reminded that his critique of Fuchida has only come about since the publication of Shattered Sword where the authors accuse the man of lying in the book he co-wrote on Midway - Midway: The Battle that Doomed Japan. Orders changing as the planes are getting ready to launch. It is called reality. Look at how many times Nagumo's planes at Midway were switching back and forth between torpedoes and bombs because of the confusing picture he was getting from the reconnaissance planes and Tomonaga after the Midway strike. Or how Yorktown kept one of her dive bomber squadrons at Midway because at Coral Sea they got burned by launching full decks at a Japanese light carrier. Actually no, Anna, the flare problem was that it was a very poorly thought out plan, by any standard, and then of course Fuchida screwed it up. It was pre-first contact. The better alternatives to the clunky scheme chosen come quickly to mind and Zimm lists them.
Again I'm just grinding through the book but I do recall that yes, there are a few places where Fuchida's account of something is called into question, but I recall there being some solid objective reasons for that. And I thought the Shattered Sword guys did have Fuchida in a bit of a bind, factually, but it's been years since I read it. The last-second targeting change for the 2nd wave was not, ironically, a response to conditions (as were the chaotic Midway changes), it was just a dubious decision to hit already-damaged ships vs. prioritizing the cruiser targets. The rationale was not given, but I could check the references. The above-expected damage to airfields/aircraft the Zimm also documents was pretty clearly a direct result of non-dispersal/no revetments, though Zimm notes that ironically the "greener" pilots (Zuikaku and Shokaku) assigned to the offensive counter-air mission performed better than some of the more seasoned ones. The attack obviously "succeeded" and in fact met Yamamoto's key objectives - but we can be thankful it was as limited by poor planning and other aspects as it was, or results could have been much worse. One fascinating aspect is that Genda's attack plan did *not* in fact follow Yamamoto's overall priorities. He weighted towards carriers, which of course were absent, making it moot. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale-Skeet Surfer at July 31, 2016 02:42 AM True. It wasn't perfect, but, it was the hand the wehrmacht was dealt. It was the best option for ongoing production they had (for heavy tank). By the time the later stuff comes into the equation, it's too late and they're too expensive to implement. If Hitler hadn't put off new design adoption, it might have been a different story, but he did. Unless the mid to late war new stuff could be produced in miraculous numbers at little reduction in the good (though not perfect) designs they had at midwar, there's little point. I understand the logic behind the Panther and the Tiger-2, but, the advantages were marginal, at best. Not enough to justify the resources comitted to them. Mornin'.
Got caught up in watching all Mike Tyson's fights in order (one convenient channel on YouTube.) Remembering how we used to pony up for pay-per-view for some of them. Still pisses me off that the ref gave Douglas the long count when Tyson had him down. Tyson had that fight won. Not that it would have mattered much though as his career didn't have much life left to it anyway at that point. The early fights were a hoot. Sure the opponents were a bunch of mooks but damn, he knocked just about everybody out within a minute. My favorite was the quick demolition of Michael Spinks, but at the time I sure wasn't happy! We had a party for that fight and the main event was over before everyone had even sat down. That was one of the ones at Trump's casinos.
