Daredevil to Skydive Without a Parachute, or a Wingsuit

He'll be, um, "free-diving," I guess-- he'll be aiming for a net, and I know some people are now saying "Oh what a cheater, a net is perfectly capable of stopping a fall," but come on, that's still pretty wild.

not true.

the key to surviving a fall is just to slow down in stages.

The "net" will probably be a series of nets stacked over each other, each net designed to breakaway under a certain amount of force. the nets will slow the guy by 20mph per hit, until he's down to a survivable speed.

I've looked up all the people who have survived falls from airplanes without parachutes. The trick is just to hit *several* things before the ground.

not if it breaks away after arresting only a certain amount of force

or perhaps its on a quick decelerator rig you know, like hollywood stuntmen use when the fall. The decelerators let them free fall for the shot, then they start slowing the fall little by little.

actually that must be the way they'r doing it -- a net, but then the ten or so guywires of the net are all on decelerator rigs.

65 I dunno. Terminal velocity is what- about 124 MPH. I think it's possible to slow him down safely. But my worry would be hitting the target. Wind gusts and conditions can make that difficult.

Posted by: Marcus T at July 29, 2016 04:24 PM (lBMUe)

66 Terminal velocity in atmosphere (at sea level?) is 120 mph.

So Hollywood stunt men jumping off of tall buildings will reach. . . ok, I don't know how fast they will be going becuase that takes math, and calculus. So I don't know how high the building has to be to reach 120 mph, but it doesn't matter because 120 mph is as fast as you can go in atmosphere. . . ok maybe you can go faster head down instead of spread eagle. . .

But the point is, you don't want to go out in hurricane force winds where the wind is 120 mph because the wind will pick you up and slam you into solid objects at 120 mph. Or propel solid objects like coconuts at you at 120 mph or more, which would hurt.

And I have this idea about a boy and his dog. Okay a girl and her horse, ok maybe a human boy and an ET, ok maybe an ET and a terrestrial dog.

it's not as bad as you think. once you're above say 1000 feet, you might as well be at 20,000, because you can't fall faster than 120 mph or whatever.

But point is, the longer the fall, the more *time* you have.

So if he gets blown off course, well, he's got a significant amount of time to glide back on to course.

There's some lovely understatement.

Okay so he's aiming for a net that's 20 stories up to allow him to go to the bottom and then get not flung out.

So it's still batshit insane but at least they've done some logistics.

If it's 20 stories up, can't they have a secondary net underneath what for the crashy crashy through?

A Marine who was scheduled to make his first jump out of a plane was in the bathroom sweating and obviously nervous when two Airborne guys walked in. After you pull your parachute cord you just float down to earth'

The Marine looked up obviously relieved and said ' we get to use parachutes?'

There is or was a sky diving center at Zepherhills Florida and we went over to watch. It was interesting to see them coming back down. They want to land as close to their gear bag as they can because they don't want to walk any futher than necessary.

It was quite common to hear 'heads up', and you would look up to see someone about to land on top of you, and you would have to step aside. In one case, two guys walking suddenly saw feet at eye level, almost walking into them. There were words exchanged about watch where you are walking, and look out for falling sky divers.

Anyway, there was a story about a female, experienced sky diver, who, just days before had a chute that would not open. She screamed all the way down, and died on impact or shortly after.

274 Baumgartner, nor Kittinger before him, was anywhere near orbit. 128,000', about 24 miles. The "edge of space" is taken to be about 100km. That's about 40% of that.

I'm talking single human re-entry from LEO, 100 mile orbit or so.

Starship Troopers (I think). They do a combat drop from deep space. Each trooper in a re-entry shell.

In real life Peggy Whitsom, returning from six months in command of the internation space station said, "I saw ten g," on re-entry. Seems that the angle at which the capsule returns is critical. Two shallow you might not return at all, or be thousands of miles off target. Too steep and the decelleration is too high, or you burn up.

Ten g was not the intended track.

NASA looked at the concept for emergency escape techniques, but decided velocity would just be too high.

There is some outfit that is actually looking at designing a space diving suit. The goal is to jump from actual "edge of space". It will not be at orbital speed or anything.

That will likely not happen for quite a while.

In NC, they found ONE 92 year-old lady who had changed her name two or three times without actually changing it officially. That was the basis for the DoJ/NAACP suit:

“Mrs. Eaton, who was born at home, has a current North Carolina driver’s license, but the name on her certified birth certificate does not match the name on her driver’s license or the name on her voter registration card,” the lawsuit notes. “Mrs. Eaton will incur substantial time and expense to correct her identification documents to match her voter registration record in order to meet the new requirements.”

401 There is the concept of the "re-entry window". Imagine the vertical, radial to the earth, as 90 degrees. Tangent is 0 degrees. The re-entry window is between 6.9 and 5.5 degrees (at least for the Shuttle). Shallower and you "bounce off". Steeper and the heat is too much and you burn up.

Apollo did a little tricky maneuver. They came in, slowed down, then pulled up and did a "ballistic coast" outside of atmosphere, losing much of the velocity, then arced back down for a final entry at a much steeper angle.

This maneuver was critical for success.

424 During WWII, the Soviets formed a parachute unit even though they had no parachutes. That did not stop them. They tried dropping guys who hung on to mattresses, which, sadly did not work. They also tried getting their guys to crawl out on the wing and drop them all at once in big snowdrifts or on the sides of hills. Surprisingly, some survived.

No, this is not a joke but demonstrates how desperate the Soviets were during the Nazi invasion.

However, any guy who jumps out of an airplane without a parachute, survives the fall, and then goes on the attack is nobody you want to mess with.

Posted by: Tantor at July 29, 2016 06:19 PM (g0aRc)

425 I saw something on TV where a guy jumped from a plane, through a hole in the roof of a large building, onto a trampoline. The hole looked to be 5-6 feet across. So this is not a first, unless the one I saw was a fake.

And there was a guy who jumped into a huge pile of empty cardboard boxes wearing only a wing-suit. I had no idea until now what a pussy he really was.
/s

Then there's the story of a B-17 tail gunner whose chute was either blown out of the plane or otherwise useless, and as the flames from the main part of the plane swept back toward him, decided he didn't want to be burned alive, and jumped - landing in a deep mountain snowbank and walking away.

Or the WW I pilot who jumped sans chute and landed on a barrage balloon. Just laid there relaxing until they pulled the balloon down and the ground crew got a real surprise.
