Home Ownership Dives To Lowest Point Since 1965: Basement Renovation Companies Cheer! [CBD]
Even though the headline is incorrect, and the article is mostly crap, Millennials Cause Home Ownership to Drop to Its Lowest Level Since 1965 is interesting for the points it unintentionally raises. By the way, the headline should have been, Coddled Children Of Coddled Children Aren't Growing Up, which is the story of our times.
Millennials are not only burdened by student loan debt, but they have also delayed life choices like marriage and parenthood, which are the primary drivers of home ownership.I accept the fact that Millennials owe a lot of money for their "Lesbian Poetry of 16th Century Low-Country Wiccans" degrees, but I categorically reject the idea that the debt was somehow thrust upon them by unnamed evil capitalists. Nobody "burdened" them with anything. The fact that many of these basement-dwelling, X-box-playing retards were insufficiently aware of the state of the employment market when they decided to 1) go to college instead of working for the local plumber and, 2) take 5+ years to finish a bullshit major that will never provide the income to pay back those loans is entirely their responsibility.
If anyone is to blame it is the parents of these entitled, dissolute assholes. They made it easy for their spawn to reject responsibility, adulthood, self-respect, personal hygiene, and a few things I haven't thought of yet.
The sad thing is that many of these toads have bought into the illogical pipe-dream that is socialism-lite...a la Bernie Sanders. Had they gotten an actual education instead of jerking off for five years they might have learned something about that mythical cradle-to-grave support system that everyone is owed by their benevolent government. It often ends in gulags or, in the case of Sweden, a country so disinterested in its own survival that it accepts invaders whose first goal is to rape every native woman (and many native men) in the country. The leftist drivel that universal home-ownership is an unalloyed economic boon is nonsense. But what home ownership does is connect the owners to the community, something that Millenials are sorely lacking. And with decreasing connections to community, is it any wonder that interest in and love of country is also decaying?Comments

CBD I linked to an article several months ago that said part of the problem was that the new home buyers of today were no longer buying what used to be called "starter homes". Those were usually smaller homes in less affluent neighborhoods with lower payments. These were good for two things, one they were affordable and two they help establish good credit. They said new home buyers now were delaying buying a home until they could raise the capital to buy a bigger and nicer home in better neighborhoods.

Government policy is the direct cause of the dramatic increase in student loan debt. Not only does the federal government directly disburse many billions in student loans each year, but the Republican Party, in its infinite wisdom, passed the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, thanks to which private student loans became non-dischargeable in bankruptcy and thereafter exploded, now also contributing many billions in student loans each year.
The solution is to alter the law so as to remove the non-dischargeability for future private loans (not existing ones), which would result in private lenders only extending loans if they expected to be paid back, largely eliminating the private loan sector. The federal government could also scale back, or outright eliminate, its own loans.
It's easy to blame those taking the loans, but the system is intentionally constructed so as to burden those herded into unproductive college degrees (who will tend to blame their private lenders and vote for politicians promising to pay their debt with government funds) and to funnel as much money as possible to leftist professors and bureaucrats.

To be fair those of us who graduated high school at the turn of the century really did get fucked. The job market looked great. Home sales were booming and then BAM a crash right as we went into the work force.
Now, that's not to say it's insurmountable. My husband and I are homeowners and make decent money, but the world drastically changed in just a few years for us.

He told me that, by the time he retired, my old school had transformed into a slum, and he blamed a lot of that decline on (and I found this interesting) the massive apartment complex that was built right next to the school.
He said, "Kids who live in apartments are totally different from kids who live in houses. Nearly all of them had single moms. If there was any man living with them it was 'mom's boyfriend,' who was more interested in the kids than the mother, if you know what I mean."

I told my kids that unless they want to work in a career that absolutely requires college (Doctor, Lawyer, Accounting) they should consider alternative pathways.

My daughter got her degree at 22, no loans - has a decent-paying job doing inspections for state Dept of agriculture (yeah, so she has to crawl under houses sometimes, but you do what you gotta do, right?) - and just bought her first house.

I'm married. We have a toddler. We own a home that we've invested about $30,000 in. It's now generically appraised for about $40,000 more than we bought it for (which doesn't account for the interior remodeling we've done). I will have a master's degree next August, and I will have $2,000 worth of debt for all of my degrees combined. My wife owes a bit more, but the payments are hardly troublesome, and she enjoys using those "loan forgiveness" mailers as kindling in our fireplace. All of it will be paid off in five years, max.

Even with a good job market, something needs to change regarding college tuition because people are going to be in debt to their college until they retire. Most people spend their whole life paying a mortgage and that's what a 4 year degree costs in many places now. It's about the same price as an average house.
I'm against any bailout but some sort of reform needs to happen.
I'm all for price freezes or making the college hold the loan.

My best friends from college were all conservatives, and are now gainfully employed at good jobs with wives and children. I now work as a teacher and several of my young coworkers are also conservatives.

There have been various economic studies since the Clinton administration showing that an increase in per-capita student aid (whether loans or grants) by government (whether federal or state) results in colleges swiftly raising their tuition by the amount of that increase. The bureaucracy of universities has increase enormously over the last few decades, made possible by ever-rising tuition that is enabled by the increase in student loans.
One possible solution, mentioned by several comments above, is to make the schools responsible for part or all of the loans. I think a simpler and better solution is simply to get rid of government loans entirely. Colleges and universities couldn't be expected to responsibly bear the burden of student loans, and the resulting accumulation of bad debt would inevitably result in a crisis and calls for a government bail-out.

I get what you guys are saying about a degree, but there are few decent non-technical jobs that don't require one. Where I work, you have to have a four year degree to make $15/hour.

As for everyone else, I'm not sure I'm an exception. I spent five years in the Army, and the vast majority of the young people I served with were responsible conservatives. My best friends from college were all conservatives, and are now gainfully employed at good jobs with wives and children. I now work as a teacher and several of my young coworkers are also conservatives.
So while there might be widely reported trends suggesting that people my age are irresponsible, liberal idiots, from my own personal experience, I reject the idea that I'm all that rare.

Twenty years ago I had friends of mine who were growing up not in basements but in garages converted into apartments for lack of better description for much the same reasons described here.

Problem is a high school diploma has been turned into a joke. Kids that can't spell or write a coherent sentence. There was a time an employer could assume a basic level on competency from a high school graduate. Now those employers are looking for a college degree as a marker of basic competency.

Assuming that the other 41% responded negatively to that question (and that that question accurately represents liberalism), that means 30 million millennials are not very liberal.

My brother teaches refrigeration, HVAC and some other kind of tech stuff at a couple of community colleges. Those guys aren't going to be starting out at $15 an hour when they graduate and they will have minimal debt.

My thing is, even a college degree is no real indicator. You get people who have degrees who have absolutely no drive, no retention of any classes they took, and cannot reason their way out of a paper bag.
Of course, there are always exceptions, but considering the reason- the UNDERLYING reason- for degrees, it is frustrating.

I agree with the poster that millennials were screwed from an early age. We were told that we had to go to college by teachers, parents, older siblings, bosses, etc. It's hard when you're 18 and everyone has been telling you your whole life that you have to get a college degree, any degree, or you'll ruin your future. Meanwhile, television was pushing this idea of college as a utopian paradise full of cute twenty-somethings.
As for buying a house, I think that the changing economy and marriage patterns play a role. A lot more twenty-somethings are relocating to the coastal cities for work, and since many have already moved once for school, it's as easy to pack after graduation and move to another city or state as it is to move back to your home town. The result is that you lose the connection that young couples would have had in the past with the community. Having fewer children and having them later in life means that you have more singles and couples who are less concerned with a yard and more concerned with finding a place to live close to nightlife and work.
Also, if the government ever got out of student loans, the hit wouldn't be felt in the humanities department, it would be felt in the science and engineering departments. Who has the larger budget, the engineering department, or the English department?

have a nephew who has had school paid for generously by grandpa - his mom is indian, his dad is white - but he tells people he's African American and that he is being crushed by student loans. he's said he hates his white grandpa, though not to his face. he's a good student, which is good at least. oh well. welcome to 2016.

The basics of that case was that Duke (and other utilities) used an entrance exam to test education and aptitude for ALL new hires. Blacks sued because they routinely scored very low on these tests as a group.
The corrupt Supreme Court did not rule that ALL tests had to be removed, but they did rule that the tests must be tailored to the job position that the applicants were seeking and that the company had to be able to justify the type of test given.
I had to take a host of tests to get hired on, but I was hiring into a Nuclear Program.

You're right, but several years behind based on my experience.
For the vast majority of jobs, there is absolutely no reason to require a degree. Experience is far more valuable (even without taking into account the pathetic state of current degree programs and universities).
More and more, however, I see the degree requirement solely for the purpose that the imbecile hiring manager doesn't feel like a tool for wasting all that time and money. They "earned" their place by getting a degree. They'll be damned if someone else with 10 times the experience and decades of results is going to prove otherwise.
Worse is that humans don't review resumes anymore. Let's say your an auto mechanic who has 20 years of experience, is regarded as an expert by everyone, and has completed decades of factory training. Unless your resume has exactly the right set of keywords and certificates in exactly the right order (as selected by some programmer or admin who has zero clue what your job actually does), your application will be rejected and you'll get an automated "thanks for applying, we will keep your information on file" email without anyone ever seeing your information.

I agree with you all, but the only reason the HVAC and other tech degrees are doing well is because everyone is choosing college. When that changes and the market is flooded with tech certificates, it will change. Wages are market driven.
Tech degrees are a wise move. Honestly, I wish we would just encourage kids to go where their skills lie. Not everyone is cut out for college and not everyone has the hands on aptitude to be a plumber.

Would appreciate prayers for D'oh Boy. He's let a former employer, fresh out of jail, move in with him. (Boss was in jail for threatening his wife.)
He's supposed to be moving the guy's stuff out of his home with the guy's attorney (since former employer can't be near the poor wife).

As my husband said last night, "Our son has a good, loving, and generous heart. He just doesn't know when to quit."
He's supposed to be moving the guy's stuff out of his home with the guy's attorney (since former employer can't be near the poor wife).

I took a three part test to work in the R&D division of a paint manufacture once. It had nothing to do with paint, all engineering and reasoning, general knowledge. Then in the interview, the guy handed me two plates to test my color distinction ability.

The Millennials are part of the problem, yes. But the government is also part of the problem. When you lose a premarital asset (house, inherited) in a non-asset divorce there is a problem. Oh, the kicker, the house was emptied and personal items sold or thrown away while the owner was out of the country, no notification. The government has made home ownership not something to be desired but something to be avoided.

The biggest changes in major distribution over the last forty years has been an uptick in business and medical majors and a downtick in education and English majors. The economic conditions facing millennials definitely haven't been caused by a surge in performing arts/creative writing/women's studies/etc degrees. If anything, it looks like students in 2011 had more serious/marketable majors than students in 1970 did.
