Baseball At Night
Morris Kantor

This painting was the product of the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP), a New Deal government program that was an offshoot of the Federal Emergency Relief Act.

Thus was born the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP), which in roughly the first four months of 1934 hired 3,749 artists and produced 15,663 paintings, murals, prints, crafts and sculptures for government buildings around the country. The bureaucracy may not have been watching too closely what the artists painted, but it certainly was counting how much and what they were paid: a total of $1,184,000, an average of $75.59 per artwork, pretty good value even then. The premise of the PWAP was that artists should be held to the same standards of production and public value as workers wielding shovels in the national parks. Artists were recruited through newspaper advertisements placed around the country; the whole program was up and running in a couple of weeks. People lined up in the cold outside government offices to apply, says George Gurney, deputy chief curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum..."They had to prove they were professional artists, they had to pass a needs test, and then they were put into categories -- Level One Artist, Level Two or Laborer -- that determined their salaries."

20 OT, but...The Saga Continues:

The luxurious gilded RV rolls slowly down the highway, Legions of heavily armed Las Vegas showgirls and Beauty Pageant contestants following. From the loudspeakers comes a continuous press conference with the enthroned figure of Donald the Trumperor holding forth to all who shall listen. One intrepid reporter scales the sides of the RV and confronts him

"You have slandered Hillary the Encankled and have invited the Rooskies to commit crimes against our election! I, Katy Tur, Ace Reporter and News Babe accuse you!"

Donald the Trumperor looks her up and down as the Golden Scalp Weasel hisses. the Trumperor speaks saying "Five."
"I beg your pardon."
"I got an eye for the ladies. You're a solid five. It's a compliment."

The reporter draws herself up to her full height, towering over the Golden Scalp Weasel. "For that insult I shall make this slow - you are treasonous for you have asked a foreign power to hack into a computer and release sensitive documents! You are doomed Trumperor, you and your little pet!"

The Trumperor rises, and says "Hillary's server cannot be hacked because it is in the hands of the FBI and its director is an honorable man."
"Well, yes, but..."
"The deleted e-mails cannot be recovered says the FBI director who is an honorable man."
"Well, yes, but..."
"The deleted e-mails were only about yoga and wedding plans, says Hillary who is an honorable woman."
"Well, yes, but..."
"There is no national security information on that server says the FBI director, who is an honorable man."
"Well, yes, but..."
"We are assured if those deleted e-mails ever see the light of day they are completely innocuous, so says Hillary and the FBI director who are honorable people."
He pauses. "So what is the problem if the rest of us see them?"
"Will you stop with the Shakespearean parody! Why are you asking for the Russians to interfere in our election!"
"Stop interrupting me; I know you want to save Hillary for your agitation tells me all."
"I am not agitated!"
"You have failed, I have dominated the newscycle once more, I have stolen the limelight from Hillary once more. My shadow shall cover the land. Flee while you can."

The luxurious RV rolls onward.

Many of the attendees, especially in the lower right portion of the painting, are looking up as if at a pop-up. But again, the ball is in the pitcher's hand.

Where are the rest of the players on the team that is batting? One's at the plate, one is on first, one is on third, and three are along the first base line. Six players?

In all, a perfect example of the quality of non-military government work.

Not about the menace of jihad on American soil -- of course not, silly rabbit! -- but about the pressing need to ban evil assault rifles. The gun that killed her son, she said in overwrought tones, fires _thirty bullets a minute_. Shock horror!

Well, lady, given that it took Miami PD a full two and a half hours to send SWAT into the club, the jihadi could practically have used a black powder muzzleloader. He was under no particular time pressure to finish his killing.

Tangerine, she is all they claim
With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame
Tangerine, when she dances by, senoritas stare and caballeros sigh
And I've seen toasts to Tangerine
Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Yes, she has them all on the run, but her heart belongs to just one
Her heart belongs to Tangerine

Tangerine, she is all they say
With mascara'd eye and chapeaux by Dache.
Tangerine, with her lips of flame
If the color keeps, Louis Philippe's to blame.
And I've seen clothes on Tangerine
Where the label says "From Macy's Mezzanine".
Yes, she's got the guys in a whirl, but she's only fooling one girl
She's only fooling Tangerine!

157 I'll say this against WPA: it's a life cycle. It made grantsmanship a virtue, and that is how we do everything now. Many of the pretty-much good-looking things it created were turned over to cities to maintain, and they didn't, fostering the now-embedded notion that cities can't afford to maintain cities. Ergo, federal water systems for Flint and Toledo. So even out of some good, much evil arises.

That 1936 state highway bridge was a pretty good investment, though. Doubt much from Recovery Summer ($30mil worth of "Barack Obama, President" road signs) will be around and carrying traffic in 80 years.

Keynes gets maligned as gay-dad of the welfare state, but his original argument was for government-financed enterprise in hard times, instead of bread and soup lines he thought were morally corrosive. He also wanted that fund built back up during the high end of the cycle. We are all...not even Keynesians now.

There's a very cool old baseball field in Newport where they play college summer league, Babe Ruth, high school and various other games. During WWII when a bunch of Major Leaguers were part of the war effort, pros who were stationed at the local Naval Base played there. Negro league games too.

It was first build around 1900 but was rebuilt out of stone and wood in the '30s as part of the WPA. When you enter there is a stone plaque that says 1937.

Best part, there is a sports bar down the right field line with a fenced in porch where you can eat and watch a game on a nice summer night. Very cool park.

188 >>> It's beautiful how Trump keeps climbing and Hil' keeps falling. Magnificent.
.....

Hillary's numbers have fallen some. Considering that Bernie supporters now have absolute proof that the the accusations of the DNC actively supporting her and marginalizing her opponents through the entirely of the farce of a primary, it's not a big surprise. The only surprise is that those numbers aren't lower, especially considering her favorables are at -17.2.

Well, it's a surprise that they're not lower if you fail to consider the alternative for disaffected Dems.

Trumps numbers have NOT been rising, if you look at them by themselves. It only appears to rise as a percentage 100% as Hillary's numbers have slipped. Generally, his numbers have been fairly flat- round 40% support overall. Not really a surprise, since 40% is about the best he did, on average, through the primaries. What is surprising is that he's failed to gain any significant support, despite having the nomination locked up for about 3 months and we're nearly a week past the convention.

Why aren't the angry Dems (or anyone else flocking to him) as an alternative to the proven lying, unindicted felon beast tha is Hillary, with her -17.2 favorable ating? His favorable rating is -21.1.

Oh...

But ignore all that. Let's look at the numbers that matter. It's about 3 months until Dooms Day. Who has the money, who is spending it, and who has the organization to win the swing states?

Trump just had his best fundraising period to date. About 24 million. Hillary had about an average (for her) period... of about 39 million. Who cares, rights. Trump has a fat check book.

Except, Trumps checkbook appears to be closed. Hillary is outspending him about about 2/3.

Trumps big advantage is all that experience hiring Top.Men and building stuff though, right? Apparently that does not extend to campaign organizations and state organizations, of which he has almost none, especially compared to Hillary who has been building for over 8 years.

Well, there is 3 months left. Surely in that time, Trump can overcome the 40% support cap he hasn't broken in nearly 2 years, raise enough money to overcome Hillary's fundraising organizations that have been in place since the 1990s and now included foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation, bolstered by 4 years of favors as SoS and her husbands relationships that go back to the 90s. I mean, the Clinton Foundation along has taken in over $2 billion since 1997. Donald Trump is supposed to be worth $7 billion... for his entire life... most of which is tied up in investments and he can't spend.

That's enough to swing Hillary's current tally of 322 electoral votes in his favor, right?
.....

Yeah. Let's ignore all that. Hillary lost .3 points in the poll, putting Trump up .9! Yay!

Oh... wait. About that Trump's rising polls? Yeah, he's down .9 today.

When does the winning so bigly that you won't believe it start?

Remember, Obama as one of his first acts as president, removed the work requirement from welfare that the republican congress had managed to wring Bubba into signing and was kept throughout Bush's presidency. It has reduced the welfare roles significantly.

A side effect of a WPA type of program would be getting these people some kind of marketable skill. I don't care if it is only shoveling. Just being able to demonstrate to an employer that you have the ability to get up, show up for work, work all day would be a benefit to them and future employers.

However....today, the WPA would be so filled with work rules, safety rules, break rules, rules for transgender bathrooms, rules for child care, rules for vacation, rules for this and that, that a bridge or road would take decades to complete, if ever.

It took our county a year to replace a bridge over a little creek on a one lane dirt road. The actual work wasn't the problem. It was the environmental impact studies, design studies, arguments over whose budget(township, county, state grant, etc.) , needs for safety railing , size, etc.

One of the things I think they should do to increase offense is eliminate those shifts. No more placing the 2B or SS on the opposite side of second base. Batter should never be allowed to leave the Box unless he is granted a time-out by the Home Plate Ump.

Once the at-bat starts, one foot needs to remain in the box the entire at-bat.

The DNC convention is just another opportunity for the elites to have another red carpet. It isn't even serious. It's just another opportunity for the elites of the left to get together and pat themselves on the back about how elite they all are in their designer fashions and how, because they are elite (and wear designer fashions) that bestows upon them the duty and the responsibility to know shit. Shit like how much better we'd all be if 1) we took note of and admired their designer fashions, and 2) if we just believe that, because they are elite and wear designer fashions, they know what is better for us.

And I thought it was one of his better deliveries - not as condescending as normal. It still had all the hallmarks of an Obama speech - namely, I am awesome. But still I thought it effective. However, Drew made a good point last night. Obama has never been able to persuade anyone on anything other than voting for him. So it probably won't do any good for Hillary.

As to freedom to speak, it's great. If your impulse is to use that freedom to repeatedly praise despots and repressive government actions, that's a bit of a worry. It makes one wonder how a candidate might feel about others freedom to speak.

So...Trump didn't say anything outrageous for them to use to mock him?

479 Can any redditors give me a summary of how the AMA
with Trump went? Lefty places are saying it went wonky and was boring.
But they are lefty, so. And it suspiciously got bumped from being seen
easily?

Probably in bad taste for me to say that she was one hot woman!

Actually, I don't want people to be burned or hurt but if you burn American flags- which I don't approve of- I can't really feel too badly for the perp.

489 How does it even make sense to prepare Trump to Mao. What is the logic behind that?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 28, 2016 12:04 PM (HXQyP)

490 The remarkable thing is that FDR knew this meddling was not going to fix anything. The meddling began under Hoover, who thought an engineering mentality was just as easily applied to people as construction projects. FDR specifically ran against Hoover's policies of unprecedented government interference in ordinary commerce. Yet when he took office FDR became Hoover on steroids, to the delight of observers like Mussolini, Hitler, and the Soviets. They took him to be one of the gang, remaking the world in their preferred image, trying to remake humanity as they felt it should be rather trying to make the best of what humanity actually is.

I think, initially, they all thought it was an actual coup by more radical islamists. Now that the truth has come out, they are sheepish about having been fooled.

494 I know this thread is kaput, but I just want to point out that there are a zillion heinous errors in that "Baseball at Night" WPA painting.

First off, obviously, the diamond is about 10% of normal size. The baserunners could go from base to base in about two strides. Everything is tiny and cramped and claustrophobic in the extreme.

Second, the batter, the catcher and the umpire are practically standing on top of each other, so closely pressed together that the catcher has to stand upright just to squeeze in. And if the batter actually swung his bat, he'd knock the catcher's head off.

Third, the perspective is all wrong outside the diamond, with klutzy foreshortening attempts and everything the wrong size and wrong curve.

Fourth, the third baseman is facing the wrong direction, and not prepared for fielding a ball, which he should be, because the batter is turned extremely to the left, meaning he's going to pull the ball toward third base.

Fifth, the first baseman no longer need to be guarding the bag during the pitch, and he'd be way way over halfway to second because of the batter's extreme stance previously mentioned. The other fielders would be shifted rightward too.

Sixth, the pitcher's windup is not a baseball windup at all -- in fact, it looks like he's a cricket bowler, not a baseball pitcher.

Seventh, why does the batting team have a first-base coach, an extremely unnecessary "position" that no team in a casual empty-lot game would have?

Eighth, there's a solid metal pole standing just adjacent to third base, in the base-running path, which would cause all sorts of disastrous accidents every inning if it really was allowed to remain there.

I could go on and on.

WPA? More like thrift-store painting.
