Quote of the Day I - Motives Unclear Edition
Such is the state of affairs in Germany right now that there were two horrifying attacks by refugees in a single day yesterday. A Syrian refugee in a town south of Stuttgart murdered a pregnant woman with a meat cleaver and then attacked strangers in the street, wounding two people before he was hit by a car and arrested. Police have said the motive in that case was personal.
The second attack took place Sunday evening at an open air concert in the city of Ansbach where a suicide bomber, 27-year-old Mohammad Daleel, killed himself and injured 15 people. Authorities have now found a video in which the bomber pledged allegiance to ISIS.
The circumstances of the attack raise yet more questions about the French government's response to the threat of terrorism. One of the attackers reportedly was a convicted terrorist being monitored with an electronic tag while living with his parents. He was allowed out unsupervised between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. The mass he attacked began at 9 a.m.

It is actually. Their sauce is a type of fresh pack (a sauce made from... sauce that is made at a lower temp than others. It gives a slightly different, greener taste to the tomato.) As such, it has to be made when the tomato pick is going on in California, which means it takes place usually between late July and early September, at the latest (because by then the tomatoes that have not been picked are rotting in the fields.)

Pizza Hut standard sauce is very plain by itself. Mostly black pepper to taste- and salt. Their Sweet sauce (for the big new yorker style) has 832 lbs of HFCS per 4000 lb batch (this is a concentrate.)
Domino's has by far the most complex and best tasting sauce (great red pepper note, with just the right amount of sweetness.) Their toppings kind of suck, which ruin it.

My BIL is a sheriff. He insists Cal-pers is in great shape. The cops here are retiring with over 6 figures. The cops are jealous of the prison guards because they get their insurance paid.
My BIL could retire now. He has 30 years and he's 52. I just figured out why he doesn't. He has 3 kids and a forty year old wife that doesn't work. He is pissed he is going to have to pay for his own insurance when he retires. He will make over 6 figures in retirement.

That said, someone accomplished with at least mid-level gunsmithing skills, and who could have the necessary tooling and machinery shipped via container in order to properly set up shop. That person would be set for life in a place like Paraguay, Panama or such.
I can get a large sailboat up-river to Paraguay, but damn.....there's not much sailing to do once there, other than to sail back down river to the sea.
I wonder how much love for us Yanks might still exist in the Azores. Seems far enough from the maddening crowds, anyway.

In college, my Spanish professor fled from Cuba when Castro took over. He was going out the back door as Castro's men were coming in the front door. Carried at all times. And no one, and I mean no one ever brought up how wonderful communism/socialism/Democratism was around him. If you did, he would go off.
It would be like hearing Tony Montana go on about communism and Castro for the whole hour. A "fuck" every 5 seconds included.

My father's family spent a great deal of time in Cuba prior to Castro. They had good friends there who, post-Castro, wrote very sad letters about the state of things. They finally fled, with only a suitcase each, and re-settled here. But it meant starting over, which was very difficult for the old folks.

That was my Dad. He was a Welder out of 597 in Chicago. He never ever failed an x-ray. He had work when no one in the Chicago area was working. At his funeral, guys that he knew stood up and said they had never seen any one better and didn't think they ever would. His hands were not particularly large, but, they were like rocks.

I do not know if any one was hurt, thankfully she wasn't, but the passengers were robbed of their belongings.
While things aren't looking rosy here right now, we haven't reached that level of lawlessness.

Whenever we'd burn in with shellac sticks, we'd use generic chapstick to protect the surrounding finish. It was identical to burn-in dodge, and about 10 times cheaper.

That said, I think I could rather seamlessly blend in, there. I'm possessed of most all of the requisite outdoor skills (understatement), am handy with tools, can stock a freezer from the hunt to the butcher's paper, and may etc.s, withal.
I'd have to learn to embrace the entire climate, and not just the winter cold.
And mosquitoes. Somewhere in my DNA, is a red & white, spiraled checkerboard matrix labeled "Purina Mosquito Chow". They see me, and all they can think is "DINNER!"
Only worse bloodsuckers on the planet are divorce lawyers and the IRS.
Oh, and while a 50' ketch would likely do me well in the warmer seas, I'd presume to have to upgrade to a 60 footer, just to accommodate the additional heavy garments and other gear necessary to manage sailing the frigid waters.
Challenging waterways up there, too. No doubt about it, it's not a place for a novice at the helm.

It is the border town for Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, and it is supposed to be one of those places to buy duty- and tax-free goods if you can walk it across the border to Brazil. Probably Argentina too, but I don't know about that. They do electronics there.
A co-worker, who's mom is from Southern Brazil, said one of her mom's prize possession was the microwave she had got at Ciudad del Este and walked across the bridge to avoid the import tax.

I think you missed my point. They had worked really hard on her appearance--plastic surgery, hair straightening, a strict diet, and workout regime. After all that she looked a lot less like Webb...now, puffy from just having a second baby, all that work was wasted, she looks just like him again.

That said, I think I could rather seamlessly blend in, there. I'm possessed of most all of the requisite outdoor skills (understatement), am handy with tools, can stock a freezer from the hunt to the butcher's paper, and may etc.s, withal.

Of the three Briggs engines (possibly off grain augers) one is seized tight, but is complete with all parts, one can be cranked but refuses to fire (no spark) and has internal noises, and one fired up a ran a few seconds, when primed with gasoline down the air intake.
Then yesterday evening, I go into town to collect my mail, and have a beer at the hotel, and there is a contractor out behind the hotel, taking aluminum-framed winodws apart to salvage the aluminum. On top of the pile in his truck, was an old window-shaker air conditioner. I had a beer, and went out and asked, "You want that air conditioner? I'll give ten bucks for it if it blows cold when we plug it in." "Well, I was going to take it home, and salvage the copper out of it, but if I can get ten bucks for it now, why not?" So we lug it into the bar (it is a heavy sucker), set it on a table, and plug it into the extension cord that was feeding the coin-operated punching bag game. "Snap" goes the breaker on the wall behind the bar. Barmaid is perturbed. Buddy goes back, throws the breaker again, and the A/C hums into life, and within 20 seconds, it's blowing cold like a champ. I hand him his ten-spot, we exchange high fives, and he goes off on his business. I have another beer, and then load the beast into the back of the pickup, and tote it home. It's an Electrohome A/C, made in Canada, and probably dates to the 1970's, so it has the deadly planet-killing Freon in it, which means it will probably continue to work until the Sun goes Red Giant.

Mike, you know what you and I are doing, is trading upon knowledge, or at least the willingness to seek out and acquire knowledge, to see the potential for profit (or at least personal satisfaction) in redeeming a piece of so-called "scrap" to some form of usefulness. I know I will never make a dollar off that old A/C. But I can clean it up, make some grilles for it, which it lacks, and haul it down to Arizona, and bung it into the wall of my house there, and make it earn its keep. And there is $99 that won't go to the People's Republic of China by way of Walmart for another dinky Haier air conditioner that doesn't chill as well.
One doesn't need to be some sort of guru of all things electrical and mechanical to make this sort of scavenging work. All one needs is faith in one's own ability to learn by doing. And the Internet has placed a lot of once-arcane knowledge at our very finger tips, cannot forget that.

Some towns in Alberta have that. They call it "Freecycle". Because the best way to recycle something is to reuse it for its original purpose. Or repurpose something to another use by means of a clever modification.

In the SF Bay Area, we have the El Cerrito Recycling Center.
It's a pretty spiffy place, with a wide semi-circle of dozens of clearly labels humungous dumpsters into which one can chuck any kind of imaginable recyclable material Five different kinds of plastics, cardboard, paper, every kind of metal, every kind of glass, even expired prescription medicines, batteries, neon lightbulbs, styrofoam -- literally everything that can be reused or recycled.
But all of that fades into the background compared to one category: books.
Originally, they just had a big dumpster for unwanted books you could dump in there, to be pulped and made eventually into new books. But so many people starting reaching into the dumpster to extract books that they made a whole separate section of the recycling center devoted to any and all printed matter: Now it is a huge barn-like-structure that is lined with shelves and also has several huge waist-high bins. And it is CONSTANTLY buzzing with activity: half the people are there dumping off and getting rid of old books and magazines (and other printed ephemera), while the other half are pouncing on and carting away all those books and magazines. At any given moment there are 20 or 30 people furiously pawing through the books.
The recycling center at first discouraged this, but after a while just gave up, and now officially allow it. But every now and then they have to send out a staffer with a megaphone to placate the seething mobs of scavengers who sometimes descend on donors before they can even get the boxes of books out of their trunks: "People! Back away from the vehicles! Let the folks donating books at least reach the bins unmolested!" And like a horde of zombies they briefly back off. But as soon as the books are upended into the bins -- zzamm! people practically dive in to get them.
It's quite a scene -- a scavengers' paradise.
And yes, I admit to being one of those scavengers every now and then when I find myself in the vicinity. I have discovered quite a number of amazing finds there.

I've subscribed to National Geographic since 1970, and by visiting flea markets and yard sales extended my collection back to 1960, with a smattering of issues before that.
In the mid-80s I briefly worked at a local recycling center. It handled metal, glass, and paper, but there was no book drop-off like that.
One day, a man came by with a trunkload of old magazines to drop off. I took one look and said, "Wait a minute. Let me back my car up here." We loaded the boxes directly from his car into mine.
And that's how I extended my collection back to 1949. Most of those magazines were in nearly pristine condition. What an amazing find. They would have simply gone into the shredder if not for me.

Depends on what you mean by "warm water". If you just mean "doesn't freeze", anywhere from Southeast Alaska all the way up to Valdez will fill the bill (that's why the Alaska Pipeline terminal is in Valdez -- it's the furthest north ice-free port).

He was truly one of the great American woodsmen, and in many ways the father of the primitive camping movement of today. His invention of the knife named for him and his classic book Camping & Woodcraft (actually a compilation of what were originally 2 short books) alone make him a giant.
But he was also a raging alcoholic (a major factor in his early death in a car crash) and he successfully pushed hard for the Fed takeover of public lands that were under local or state control. I know that in his era he didn't foresee what a terrible idea that would turn out to be. Maybe he should have. There's an unsavory sense of "I enjoyed MY freedom, now I'll make damn sure you don't have any once I'm dead" in some of his writings.

There was a beautiful mountain stream running through the valley, rare enough in the desert and absolutely essential for primitive camping. Then one night it rained, and of course in the desert any rain can be a disaster. The bucolic stream became a raging river of red mud. I hand-cranked my radio and tuned to the National Weather Service, and learned that the rain was going to continue for several hours. Not good. (no cell service out there but the NWS came through on the radio!) We had to load up and break camp in a big hurry, in a torrential downpour, at 6:00 in the AM with no coffee.
We had wade in the stream in stetches where the trail was washed out. Trekking poles dug into the stream bed really saved the day. I still almost went down once or twice. Fording a raging stream with a 75-lb. pack on your back is challenging to say the least.
But we survived just fine, with an adventure story to tell, thanks to preparation and knowing what we were doing. There's a reason we made camp 30 feet up from the canyon floor in the first place, and why we made sure we had trekking poles and a crank-radio.

Your story reminds me of a river tale. Out in a flatboat fishing on the river with a storm looming. Time to pack it in and go home. But the motor won't go into "Forward". And you can't go faster than a crawl in reverse or you get water over the transom. We backed up the river at barely over an idle in a driving rainstorm for three miles. One of us remarked that some day we would look back on the experience and laugh. It took three years.

Definitely get one. They're not too expensive either. I just have a 60.00 Eton Microlink. I would never be without one. I'm always buying them for birthdays and Christmas for my relatives who camp.
You can charge your cell phones and other devices and it has solar-charging too. And if the grid was to go down, you'd be the smartest guy on the block.

Similar to above it was settled by a lot of germans who moved there from Pennsylvania, and it also had a history of race riots going back one hundred years. Some common denominator there, can't put my finger on it though.

Yep, even that article I pulled that one from has some inaccuracies in it. It said this was the largest race riot in IL history. It wasn't. IIRC the one in Springfield that burned most of the town down and killed hundreds of people was.

This week the DNC had their first night on every local OTA channel. I checked YouYTube and the feeds I found were two and three camera feeds, glowing promos of dems sprinkled throughout.
I had to look for the repubs and I can't get away from the dems. And then I see the report that the dems 'slightly' beat the repubs opening night viewership.
The alphabets are a joke and yes it has spread to our local stations.

They were called the NYC draft riots by the liberal media but they were not really draft riots so much as anti-Lincoln's War riots. Yes, the shitty way the draft was implemented in the North was an issue, but not the leading cause of the riots. And the rampaging crowd beat or killed any black that was unlucky enough to be in the area of the riot. MA was the one who was pushing so hard for war with the South. I suspect that was because their radical Senator was beat nearly to death with that gutta-purcha cane.
At the time NYC was closely aligned with the South as they were major trading partners and they were totally opposed to the war.

The hospital administrators and such that we have now have higher annual incomes than the millionaires did, but they're just upper-upper middle class. They live in very large...ranch houses.
