7 In a news note, I have been praying for some humility from Obama in Dallas, but seeing as he has doubled down on his "I am your best hope" rhetoric with police officials yesterday, even God can't help this man.

Heads up Super Shoppers.

Today is Amazon Prime Day and there is at least three decent promotions for Prime members this year:

1. Buy a $50+ Amazon gift card, get a $10 credit to your account

2. If you have an Amazon Prime Visa Rewards credit card, there's a $30 off $150 coupon

3. Uhhhh - I forget the third one.

Might want to look at a deals site such as slickdeals.net for the particulars. Amazon deals can be a bit wonky.

No wonder achievements pale in comparison to the German, or English, or Spanish, or even the French, who knew something of silly dress themselves.

75 Artsy commentary, Willowed in the last thread:

Re: Dress Woman:

It's a beautifully crafted image. It's got dynamism - the officers in motion - and stability. It's aligned properly, it has favorable aspect ratios, and generally obeys the classical rules of visual composition. A random shutterbug would focus more toward the middle of the frame, missing the context of the phalanx of police in front of her, and the empty street behind her, and would not be able to capture what the photo-artists call 'the decisive moment.' Yeah, whoever shot this knew his/her stuff, and was set up beforehand.

Digital age, so it was a digital imager - I refuse to call those gadgets 'cameras' - probably shot on a tripod. If I were doing it, I'd have it doing as many frames per sec as possible, to ensure I don't miss a thing, and might even consider layering a few of the images to attain the desired effect.

From the background, you can tell the photographer was shooting to capture and freeze the motion - he shot wide-open, as they say, to take advantage of a faster shutter speed. Someone shooting on the fly with one of those gadgets would set it to auto-focus, auto-exposure, etc., but this photographer didn't, it was set manual, with a limited depth of field from the aperture, requiring even more care. You can see that the sky to the left is over-exposed - auto mode wouldn't do that - aperture, like everything else, was a conscious, artistic decision.

And, the final detail, proving beyond any doubt that it was staged: where's her purse/handbag? No woman in a dress is without one. It's a model-shoot, pure and simple.

Really masterful work in the service of a lie.

Such is life.....

80 The man is unimpressive but the girl is rather pretty. What makes the painting for me is the treatment of the cloth in their clothes and the bed fabric, the chandelier, even the dog. (The woman's upper hand, especially the thumb, is oddly shaped.) I am sure there is more going on, symbolism and the importance of the fixtures, than I realize.

No wonder achievements pale in comparison to the German, or English, or Spanish, or even the French, who knew something of silly dress themselves.

Posted by: OneEyedJack at July 12, 2016 10:02 AM (kKHcp)

The 17th-Century Dutch were very accomplished, especially in comparison to the Germans. The Dutch had established a global trading empire; the leading publishers, printmakers & cartographers were headquartered in the Netherlands. The Dutch fought an 80 year war for independence against the Spanish & established a republic in a sea of monarchies.

128 Yesterday we were told in one thread in particular three times that Trump had said about fighting Crooked Hillary that he was, "Doing it cuz I feel I have to do it and it's sort of boring" (all in quotes I'd note) and this was a chore for him.

The commenter didn't link a source but it turns out is one unsourced and without-context tweet from a Bloomberg News "Politics" reporter linked in a Federalist piece. (See below.)
http://preview.tinyurl.com/gnykuoy

And looking through Jennifer Jacobs' twitter feed for the past few days back to July 6th she only mentions that quote once and without any context at all; doesn't source it at all although it's implied it's from a speech as it looks like most of her Trump quotes are directly from or paraphrased from speeches given on the tweet date (or commenting to the press afterward?); and there's nothing else on it at all just the one tweet on July 6. Jacobs also doesn't reply to any retweeters asking for a source or the like.

Just thought HQ readers might want to know. And I'll see you later after work. Cheers.

Giovanni Arnolfini was a wool merchant from Lucca who spent most of his life in Bruges, the wealthy trading city of Flanders. His costume was adorned with the exceptionally expensive pelts of pine martens, perhaps 200 of them; but we were told that the bulk of his companion Giovanna's green dress, so often thought to show that she was pregnant (the couple actually never had children), was because its lining was made from the white chest fur of red squirrels, minever, 2000 of them. He kept the light behind her - the light follows her, she brings the light - yet was able not to cast her face in shadows (always tricky, especially with darker-skinned people).

And the photographer was careful not to go nuts with the color saturation - in fact, he deliberately kept it under-saturated, which is always best for shooting people.

As the young folks say: 'totes' a model-shoot.

John Conyers is 87 years old. He has been in congress since 1965, in other words, for 51 years.
He is an addled old black panther socialist, who for some inexplicable reason, keeps getting reelected to his Congressional seat.

His wife, Monica Conyers, was on the City Council of Detroit during the Kwame Kilpatrick years and ended up going to prison for three years when she was convicted of bribery for taking payoffs from contractors wanting to do business with the city.

She is out of prison and filed for divorce from Conyers last year. She is 50 years old, and yes they had two sons together when she, as a 25 year old, married the 61 year old Conyers 25 years ago.

She is seeking alimony, LOL, from Conyers, who as of last year, has a net worth of minus $187,000. They owe somewhere around $200,000 on a mortgage on their house.

Remember, this old cretin's vote helps propel legislation that affects all of us.

Focus in intermediate light is a tricky thing. It's a function of ISO, shutter-speed, and aperture.

you can get a super-sharp image at high ISO, but lose detail. Depth of field requires a tight aperture (heh...heh..heh...) but that means you have to go with higher ISO (loss of detail) and/or lower shutter speed, which leads to more blurring of motion.

Every shot - except for architecture and still-life - is a compromise among those three parameters.

It was the Italians who were the masters of proportion, depth, and perspective. Less detailed, but more human looking. They also used neat geometric tricks to give an illusion of depth.

Of course. Commissioning a painting was a very expensive status symbol. It told a lot about the patron, and that patron was going to get placed into it everything he could have the artist put in to show off - furniture, decorations, finery, jewelry, pets - everything possible. This may be the only painting that the patron will ever buy, the only picture in his house, and it will be treated as the precious thing it is.

For myself, seeing his paintings always makes me think of bubblegum, a bit too sweet and gauzy.

The thing is, while he may be panned for his 'vaseline on the lens' technique, at least he is trying to create things of beauty. I think that is the real distinction in art. When artists start moving from painting that are beautiful first, but make you think, to paintings that 'confront your assumptions' you go to shit town.

I'm going with no but I'm not a huge fan of stunts like that.

Now, that being said, I could see pictures coming out of this that might classify as art. I can see a 4 x 6 camera taking some really interesting images given depth of field and the contrast of the blue with the bricks of the building.

Also the distance to blur out the choice of the humans to be painted. That's key.

That's a very interesting Adams piece. Here's a snippet:

So far, Trump has showed a willingness to annihilate any professional politician that gets in the way. And he's annihilated professional reporters and news organizations that got in his way. And he's tough on non-citizens. But Trump hasn't tried to turn American citizens against each other. Clinton has, and successfully so.

You can blame Trump for Trump University, and for his uncivil language. You can blame Trump for lots of stuff. But the police shootings and the recent uptick in domestic racial violence are mostly Clinton's doings to win the election. And it is working. Unless Trump finds a way to counter Clinton's racial persuasion, he will lose in November.

286 This was something I was thinking about the last time CBD posted a landscape. What do you all think of Thomas Kincaid?

For myself, seeing his paintings always makes me think of bubblegum, a bit too sweet and gauzy.

The thing is, while he may be panned for his 'vaseline on the lens' technique, at least he is trying to create things of beauty. I think that is the real distinction in art. When artists start moving from painting that are beautiful first, but make you think, to paintings that 'confront your assumptions' you go to shit town.
Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 12, 2016 11:04 AM (3ZoRf)

I rather like Kincaid. I've been to a gallery that had originals of his works and I still can't figure out how he gets the quality of the light he does. Some of it has to be the types of materials he is using but most of it is talent and technique.

I think this notion that he's not a Real Artist because of all the licensing is ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with making money.

Now, is it high art? Maybe not. But the skill is impressive. Also, I like landscapes in the first place so I have a bit of a bias.

He did some impressionistic works as well that are lovely.

And I said, as I have been saying for the last few months about this, that they never have to mention his name. The only one who I believe has some kind of obligation to support Trump is Jeb and that's because Jeb signed that stupid pledge. No one made him do that, hell, he's part of the group that insisted on the pledge in the first place. If he wants to go back on that now, fine, but I will assume that he is even more of a lying opportunistic hack than the standard politician. He wanted the pledge, he got the pledge, that is now biting him in the face. Too bad, so sad.

As far as GHWB and GWB, they are private citizens and have no obligations to do anything at all. Would it be better if they abided by the principle of whomever wins the primary should receive support? Sure. But are they obligated to do so? Nope.

Also I no longer care about the Bushes and thus cannot even whip up any outrage about them.

Ponder how low my interest must be for me not to get outraged by something.

314 Jeb had to go for the simple reason that he opened his campaign by telling conservatives that he didn't need them or their votes. I would say that conservatives were pretty much obligated to shun him after that or lose all weight with the party, such as it is.

He's probably a nice guy and, in the mode of Trump, would be a helluva lot better for the country than the unindicted co-conspirator.

Considering how much outrage The Donald creates the Secret Service is going to have its hands full -- and, as with terrorist attacks, the bodyguards have to succeed all the time while the assassins only have to get through once.

Random tree rat story. I get my loathing of tree rats from Mommy who truly cannot stand squirrels. They eat her bird seed and Mommy takes all her various bird feeders very seriously indeed.

Anyhoodle. Mommy was telling me all about how the stupid squirrels were crawling all over her flower boxes and moving them at night to get to the one bird feeder on the back porch and how she was having to bring them into the garage at night and it was frustrating her. Sadly, she did not think my suggestion to lie in wait with a bb gun was as helpful as I did.

The other night she didn't bring them in and the security light came on for the back porch and she was all aha! I shall catch the vermin in the act!

Sooooooo. The parents have a raccoon that comes up on the porch to visit them at night.

Hilariously, Mommy is fine with the raccoon.

Hillary's cackle drowns out the sound of the motorcycle. "They cannot best me with the law! What is a mere law to me? I spit at the law!"
Hillary does and reaches for a hankie to clean off her goggles.
"But does not the Beast Trump also disdain the law, evicting old ladies and their kittehs into the harsh winters of Atlantic City without so much as a by-your-leave or a zippity-doo-dah?"
"Trump! Hah! That orange buffoon is no match for me. All I have to do is call him a racist and he collapses like all have collapsed when a Democrat accuses them. The accusation is the crime, enough to make people spit at the name Trump - and speaking of lickspittles, get me where I can get a signal. I got to call Stuffycuddlepuss and get him...hold on, I got service."
The call goes through.

Not to mention her running her family business for years, and her family's devotion to the military.

As far as her being insufficiently pro-Trump, that goes for 60% of the Republican Party (and maybe more at this stage). This is one good way you pull those voters back, and work to achieve unity, with important political gestures.

If you do go to the Louvre, don't waste time going to see the Mona Lisa. It's behind a glass case and there are going to be about 5000 tourists(50% of them Japanese) standing in front of it, so you won't even get a good look at it.

Pick one room filled with art you especially like and go enjoy that.

You can't see everything or even 10% of what the Louvre holds and if you try, you'll end up with MEGO (my eyes glaze over) as you stand there in front of a Rembrandt without even really seeing it.

He's an asshole (and much worse) for the rainbow flag display but I do NOT want the WH in blue lights now.

The WH is not a political bulletin board and should NEVER be used as such. Those rainbow lights were a disgusting, breech of tradition. Now everyone and every cause, right or wrong, will want their moment of display.

The POS troll set a revolting precedent with the rainbow, and for what? To express triumphal hatred of half the country.

I'd like the precedent to be rejected. In fact, I'd like Congress to ban such WH displays for ANY reason.

506 437 357, Vercingetorix was also treated royally between the time he surrendered (thus starting that great French tradition) and his being shown off at Caesar's triumph. He was living in the lap of luxury. Then he was "displayed" before being dispatched ....

I like the euphemisms people are employing: Before he was drug through the streets in front of Caesar's triumphal parade and was then ritually strangled. All to show the price for those who defied the might of Rome.

Again, not a comparison Trump fans should be drawing between Trump and his defeated primary opponents if they want their support. I realize most do not care about his opponents themselves, but also think about those who supported Cruz, etc.

510 The painting commemorates the marriage of Arnolfini and his wife. The detail about the mirror is the van Eyck himself is the reflected image. He is there as a witness to their union.

Pretty cool, huh?

511 247: Definitely. Pieta, along with some of the other sculptures and bronzes done by the Italian masters drive home just how focused they were on recreating the human form accurately, more so than many of their paintings. And they did all of that with simple HAND TOOLS! They didn't view science and art as separate disciplines the way we do today. Case in point: Leonardo DaVinci's interest in human anatomy grew out of a wish to become a better artist. His teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio, believed that his students should be knowledgeable anatomists. I wonder if that influence is responsible for some of his more scientifically oriented output we see in his notebooks. He was certainly a visionary, the type of person who comes along every century or so. (Eg, Archimedes, Heron of Alexandria, Galen, Ben Franklin, Nikola Tesla, Einstein)

510: Yep, the man had steady hands for sure.

514 I was in London recently (during the Brexit vote actually) and saw this very same painting in the National Gallery. The picture here doesn't do it justice.
