Quote of the Day I

One of the many extraordinary things about this present political crisis is the reality that the Democratic establishment is lockstep behind a woman who has unquestionably failed the public in multiple, consequential ways - yet they believe she's somehow triumphant because she's not actually facing a criminal trial.

-- David French

Quote of the Day II - The Worst Kind of Militia Edition

What this bill does, the bill before us, allows for 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds to operate handguns. We do not need a militia of toddlers. We do not have handguns, that I am aware of, that fit the hands of a 1- or 2-year-old.

Quote of the Day III

But then someone got the bright idea to bring back the Three Stooges as comedy relief in a cheesy exploitation film that would eventually be titled BLAZING STEWARDESSES.

Moe called up Joe and they drafted perennial Stooge to the Stooges, Emil Sitka, to portray a relative of Larry's (his brother, I believe). In the script, they were to appear as sleazy, overage "swinger" types. There's very little question that  it would have been a low point of their illustrious career.

That said, there would have been a NEW Three Stooges! But it wasn't meant to be. Moe took ill and then died. The act had replaced the third person multiple times and maybe the second person could have been replaced. But no one could replace Moe. And without Moe, there simply was no act.

-- from The Three Stooges That Almost Were

Tim Blair on Sudden Everyone Death Syndrome

People keep dying in violent and terrible ways, and nobody seems to know why. Following the recent slaughter of 44 people at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, US secretary of state John Kerry told a press conference: "We're still trying to ascertain what happened and who did it."

One day, many years from now, with the assistance of global police networks, we might have an answer. At US news outlet MSNBC, this post-Istanbul question was asked: "Is there a pattern to recent terror attacks?"

Again, nobody has a clue. It's a complete mystery. What on earth might be the common factor linking mass killings in Paris, Brussels, Orlando, London, Madrid, Bali, Israel, Libya Somalia, Cameroon, Egypt, India, Bangladesh, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, the Philippines, Russia, Burkina Faso, Kenya and now Istanbul? What pattern might there be?

Over in Germany, which coincidentally has lately taken in some million or so claimed refugees, one police spokesman suggested overcrowding may be the big issue.
Announcing that Munich would spend nearly $4.5 million more on security during this year's Oktoberfest, spokesman Marcus da Gloria Martins said that the huge cost increase was to do with something other than terrorism and its completely unknown cause.

"For me the general problem of crowding at Oktoberfest is more worrisome than a terrorist attack," he said, which is presumably why it makes sense to hire an additional 100 security personnel, install an emergency multi-language loudspeaker system and conduct bag checks at every single entrance.

All of these measures are obviously about overcrowding and not any other thing that might happen at random, somehow causing people to spontaneously die. Obviously.

The Looming Rio Olympics Disaster: Superbugs, Raw Sewage, Rampant Crime, No Police, and Now With Missing Gitmo Prisoner Upgrade

Here is the current visitor welcome:

riowelcomepolice

And Steven Den Beste wonders if the Olympics are going the way of the World Fair:

Now I think that the Olympics are going to face the same fate, and this year is the beginning of the end. All reports are that the games in Rio de Janeiro are going to be a disaster. It's supposed to take place in August and some of the facilities aren't complete yet. The drinking water there is contaminated and the area around the site is crime-ridden. The area of ocean where all the yachting events are supposed to take place is contaminated with unprocessed sewage.

And there's the Zika virus and the mosquitos that carry it. Plus the Russian track team isn't being permitted to attend because of a drugging scandal. And the laboratory which was supposed to do all the drug tests can't because its equipment doesn't work and its people have been bribed. Or something like that.

Sonny Bunch: Why I'm #TeamCinemark

After reading the article I have to agree with him. The families of victims of the 2012 Aurora shooting sued the movie theater, CineMark, for damages even though it was not responsible for the shooting. The case ground through the courts until eventually a jury found the theater not  liable for any damages. And now the theater is - as is allowed under Colorado law - asking to be reimbursed for the legal expenses incurred while defending itself. And people are very upset over this.

And Sonny is not having any of it:

Because, obviously, the company should just soak up $700,000 in legal fees they spent defending themselves from people who tried to wring money out of them for something that clearly wasn't their fault. Because, obviously, the people who filed the frivolous and, frankly, stupid lawsuit against the movie theater shouldn't bear any responsibility for their actions.

...Here's a pro-tip: if you don't want to get sued for legal fees, don't launch dumb suits trying to earn a quick payout from a company that isn't at fault in any way.

How China Took Control of Bitcoin

In its early conception, Bitcoin was to exist beyond the control of any single government or country. It would be based everywhere and nowhere... Yet despite the talk of a borderless currency, a handful of Chinese companies have effectively assumed majority control of the Bitcoin network. They have done so through canny investments and vast farms of computer servers dispersed around the country...there are fears that China's government could decide, at some point, to pressure miners in the country to use their influence to alter the rules of the Bitcoin network. The government's intervention in 2013 suggests that Bitcoin is not too small to escape notice.

The Story Behind Big Trouble in Little China

Released 30 years ago this week, Big Trouble in Little China was a box office bomb that was mostly panned by critics and is credited with souring John Carpenter on Hollywood. It's also a cult classic unlike any other, an action comedy that's endlessly quotable and eternally rewatchable for its most diehard fans. It's a film made better over time by its flaws, especially the over-the-top performances, and its campiness has become so popular that even Dwayne Johnson wants to bring Jack Burton back.

23 I'm going to be far more interested now in ongoing Federal court cases in the news, just to see how much of the Comey exemptions ripple into the pond of jurisprudence.

Ripples in nature's ponds tend to self-dampen, and dissipate.

These legal ripples though, should amplify into tsunamis across the desk of every prosecutor and judge, wash over juries, and pound the figurative coastline of every Federal court in the land into absolute rubble.

Lady Justice might be blind, but she's damn sure not stupid.

Scales in one hand, sword in the other.

32 And Steven Den Beste wonders if the Olympics are going the way of the World Fair:

The Olympics have reduced themselves to nothing but a pathetic joke. There's no reason for sports which have serious professional leagues to take part in the Olympics. If you want to see the best tennis player, basketball players/team, golfer, boxer, soccer player (for the girlymen), etc, then you watch the professional leagues where the best play every day (in season). The Olympics was meant for purer sports and competitions that are not supported professionally, where the only large venues that people had for these true athletics were in the Olympics. But now that's all gone. Instead, we have a bunch of laughable joke sports in the Olympics and a bunch of third rate versions of professional sports. Meanwhile, they tried their hardest to take wrestling out of the Olympics. Friggin wrestliing!!

I can only hope that the Olympics dies a fast death in the very near future. It's been too Europeanized (which is the death of all things). Although it's worth the laugh when dirt poor countries vie for the pleasure of losing their asses on hosting it. The only time the Olympics ever made any money for the hosts was when it was in America - where the Olympics are run far differently than anywhere else, since the federal government has pretty much NOTHING to do with it (until the Indonesian Imbecile came along, of course).

Children and guns are simply a bad idea. Your average firearm is too unwieldly for a typical child to operate in a safe and effective manner.

Children are much better suited to crew served weapons. The semi stationary characteristic of a mortar or heavy machine gun relies less on the child's physical strength and stamina and also builds teamwork.

102 ...Here's a pro-tip: if you don't want to get sued for legal fees, don't launch dumb suits trying to earn a quick payout from a company that isn't at fault in any way.

Let's explore that fault thing.

From a source Sonny doesn't link to:

So why did the killer pick the Cinemark theater? You might think that it was the one closest to the killer's apartment. Or, that it was the one with the largest audience.

Yet, neither explanation is right. Instead, out of all the movie theaters within 20 minutes of his apartment showing the new Batman movie that night, it was the only one where guns were banned. In Colorado, individuals with permits can carry concealed handgun in most malls, stores, movie theaters, and restaurants. But private businesses can determine whether permit holders can carry guns on their private property.

Most movie theaters allow permit holders carrying guns. But the Cinemark movie theater was the only one with a sign posted at the theater's entrance.

If the theater creates a gun-free zone, my view is they should be on the hook for security as well as damages that occur for their failure to provide a safe environment.

From his speaking, and the little writing we've seen of his, it's clear that he didn't score north of 450 on the verbal section. An 870 is the best he could have possibly done on the SATs - and that would have been on his luckiest of days.

By that score some would estimate his IQ around 99 but I think that the math part is more important and that Barky's IQ scores in around 85. He's a friggin idiot. That's for sure. I wouldn't let Barky tutor a 10 year old in anything.

I watched Hillary's concession speech from 2008 on Youtube. She was brave and positive all right, putting on her gracious smile and vowing that this fight wasn't over and that "all you have made this possible" blah blah.

Obviously, she was priming for 2016.

To set myself up for a royal punking, I wonder what that speech will look like if she loses this year, when she's out of runs and the only way back in is for Chelsea to take the Senate seat away from Kirsten Gillibrand in 2018.

259 232 Barky showed, with his "profits AND earnings ratios" (along with other moronic comments) that he didn't crack 420 on the math section of his SATs.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 07, 2016 12:09 AM (zc3Db)

Average black IQ score: 85. (This is a fact.) One standard deviation below the average IQ, which is 100 by definition. To the extent that one believes IQ scores reflect native intelligence, this implies that only one black in six is as intelligent as the average white.

Before anyone sputters in outrage, this is the mathematics. Maybe IQ scores are meaningless; but if they have meaning, this is a fact.

Furthermore, the average college graduate has an IQ of around 115, i.e., one standard deviation above the overall mean, or TWO standard deviations above the black mean. This - again, if one takes IQ scores as reflecting native intelligence - implies that ca. 3% ((1/6)^2) of college graduates should be black.

Surprisingly, this is pretty much the case. Obviously evidence of racism, straight up.

I would say that IQ doesn't measure intelligence, per se, but gives a good measure of many of the basic mechanisms of thinking and intelligence. I would say that a good IQ test is akin to measuring the athletic ability of someone by having them do a few choice track and field events, along with some measures of reaction time and coordination. It wouldn't say who is great at any particular sport but it gives a pretty good idea of who is a good physical specimen who will probably be good at some particular sport.

Native ability is one thing; discipline and motivation are others, and totally independent of native ability.

The most intelligent (or athletic) person in the world - in terms of native ability - might be a fat slob who sits on the couch eating Doritos. That goes to character, not ability. It's the Mycroft Holmes effect.

Ted was always into the green/no nukes shit before he started banging Fonda.

Ted was a smart broadcaster though. He loaded his networks up with sports before everyone else realized that was how you got new viewers to your networks. Ted's downfall was when Time Warner/AOL took over. They wanted to appeal to the metrosexuals while Ted always had his networks appealing to middle Americans. Once they took over, all the sports but basketball started to disappear from their networks.

334 Once upon a time I read about the possible generation of the Voynich
manuscript by using a type of Cardano grille. It had to do with the
distribution of the character occurrence. On looking at it I got an idea.

I
was seriously pissed about my work conditions at that time, and really
fed up with what I was doing, and so I spent a lot of time brooding.
Finally I decided to be weird and do something to blow off steam.

I
bought some old post cards at a flea market, old uncancelled postage
stamps from the "face-value" bin at the coin shop, cut small randomly
spaced squares in a cardboard sheet that would fit over an average
printed page, and started putting together 5-letter text blocks pulled
from randomly chosen books via the grille, on the post cards, and then
mailed them to addresses and names randomly taken from an online
phone book.

Life eventually got better and I stopped mailing meaningless random postcards to total strangers.

396 Thanks for the ONT, Maet! Good stuff. My take on things therein:

Moe is dead? I suspected as much, but it is now confirmed. Sad.

Unexplained death syndrome? Here in the US, we have a second variant; see Chicago for details.

The Rio Olympics is everything you would expect; I went to Rio, and all I got was this lousy incurable disease. Even Rahm couldn't have fucked it up this bad (probably). But hey great news; er Great news, as Britain announced that men could compete as women at Rio.

re Cinemark, I wonder if the lawyers representing the suers laid out in their contracts the warning that a loss could result in the suers being liable for the Cinemark's attorney fees? Because if not, then next the suers should go after their attorneys for damages. That would be fun to read about, anyhow.

re the FBI killing statistics, first.... FBI? Not the most trusted source anymore, but let's go with it. Second, I think the # of rifle killings is going to take a couple of big leaps in 2015 and 16 but the numbers will still be fairly small overall.

Finally, I liked Big Trouble. Fun movie.

404 On the tech interview one; that's interesting.

It's not that there is bias, or women really "do worse" but that women give up after seeing "rejection" far faster than men do?
That's what their test data really showed (as women who get past the 2nd failure basically do as well as men)?

Once you factor out interview data from both men and women who
quit after one or two bad interviews, the disparity goes away entirely.

I can see that... from my personal anecdotal experience.
*(that's how we do science, right? No... whatever.
I feel like typing anyhow)

My first programming job (i.e the important one to get field experience) was the most disastrous, most humbling, and worst interview of my entire life.
I knew nothing they wanted (didn't even know the language they used; had literally never heard of it) and they wanted nothing I knew (no sue for 3AC Assembler, or automata theory/programming language theory I had taken a lot of classes in, much less "LISP").

AFTER the verbal interview, I was given a logic test to take, and honestly I almost didn't bother. But this was my ONLY interview in over a year in my field... so I stuck it out.

They hired me SOLELY based on the written test. They'd started it recently, and were letting 2 people go who interviewed well but bombed the test.
I scored one of the highest scores they'd seen on the test; so they gave me a shot.

When they called to offer me a job; I had to move the phone away from my head to avoid saying what I was thinking:
"Are you sure? Were you at the same interview I was? Do you want ot check if you have the right resume/person?"
Then ask salary information and politely accept the job; while wondering WTF was wrong with the company that would hire me after that interview.

I've been coding in that language for over 18 years now. Moved companies after 3.5 years with rave reviews from my first employer. Still with my 2nd employer.

But IF I were a bit more easily discouraged; I'd never have taken the test that got me that first job.

Sure my 2nd job's interview was a cakewalk; they'd pretty much hired me without ever meeting me; just wanted a quick in person tech check to prove I wasn't completely bullsh*tting on the resume. The rest of the "interview" was a meet greet; and lunch with the team I'd be working with.

But you don't get a 2nd job interview without getting that first job.
And I booched that so bad I almost gave up before they got to the point where they decided to hire me.

If women really are more easily affected by rejection (or the appearance of rejection/dismissal) I can see not getting the job I did; even with exactly what I had going in.

Ha! I can definitely one-up you on that.

I got hired for my present job in 1990. It's a small business, and I applied through a newspaper ad.

I had no experience in the field and no college degree.

My prospective employer gave me a test of general knowledge that he concocted himself. There were a hodgepodge of questions about basic arithmetic, current events, history, and even literary and Biblical references.

He later told me that I got the highest score he had ever seen.

It was designed to weed out imbeciles. It would be totally illegal today. It was probably illegal in 1990 as well.

409 I looked at Wikipedia and apparently 125 is the minimum IQ to be considered a "genius" and modern IQ tests avoid using that term.

I tested at 123 in grade school (missed it by *that* much). No way in hell Obama is 145. That's a claim akin to Kim Jong-Il scoring 18 holes-in-1 during a round of golf. As I said earlier, I'd sooner believe that my cat has an IQ of 145.

What is the problem?

The times I've had issues with UEFI systems, it nearly always turned out to be a proprietary feature that wasn't documented well. For example, a 3 position switch on the motherboard for cooling modes. One was the default and the other two were for air and liquid cooling, which seemed reasonable as it was my first time with liquid cooling. What the onscreen info and printed manual failed to state clearly was that these modes were only for overclocking, which was not desired. It was a very nice board but I'm not inclined to do the OC game unless I hit a lottery jackpot and and can afford such destructive amusements. I would have saved a huge amount of frustration if I'd never changed that setting. That would have been more simply avoided if the board maker thought to include some text to the effect "WARNING: LARK'S VOMIT. ALSO, OVERCLOCKING" and stopped acting like OC is the be-all and end-all reason to get a higher end product.

But UEFI in general has been a big improvement. One thing I'm hoping happens soon is native support for NVME drives. The ability to boot is there, of course, but the performance doesn't really kick in until you're in a supporting OS, so you don't see any improvement over a SATA device during startup.

If there is any validity to the recent theories about the many ways in which IQ can be expressed, perhaps it isn't especially remarkable that Obama is in that range. If his other attributes meant he was a tightly focused genius specializing in the selling of lies, it would explain much. The very first time I saw him speak at length I thought to myself, this is the character in the movie that the audience is expected to immediately recognize is a scam artist. Yet he is held up as one of the great public speakers of the age. It seems to go beyond the Emperor's New Clothes effect, as large numbers of people seem to really believe it.

It's baffling to me. I've never heard him go on for more than three minutes without finding him utterly full of shit. I didn't regard myself as a conservative back then but my recollection of Bill Clinton in his campaigning days didn't have my BS meter pegged constantly. Maybe if today's me went back to 1992 and had to live through it again I'd feel differently but there is definitely some sort of well above average bullshitting capability at work in these power. Therein lies a certain kind of genius, to all our detriment.

416 I allegedly have a very high IQ, I've done pretty well in life but I know there are many people who have accomplished a lot more who probably didn't test as high. I think that having above-average intelligence is a big advantage in any field, even athletics. But there is a point of diminishing returns, maybe after 115-120 or so where it doesn't help that much unless you are actually, say, a rocket scientist. Then the other attributes become more important - diligence, organization, leadership etc. Of course if you are deficient enough in the other qualities then IQ is not going to bail you out no matter how high it is.

Good Morning Daywalkers!

So later today I get to go have a full body MRI to see if 'something' has metastasized from elsewhere in my body and ended up in my left eye. My sisters and mother all have the vapors, personally I think the Doctor is wrong and the growth he's known about for 3 years that is now leaking fluid just needs to be zapped with a laser.

But then again, he's a doctor and I'm just working on a hope.

Lately, I've been blocking lots of nevertrumpers on twitter. Normally, they don't bother me all that much, but over the last couple of weeks, the crazy is starting to show. If anyone's familiar with leftist sites, such as DU, or Kos, you understand how bat shit crazy those posters can be...and nevertrumpers seem determined to make them look sane.

They pick apart every little tiny thing he does, or say, where he appears, when he appears, what he's wearing, etc, etc, etc, and try to find fault with it. Absent anything that stands out, they excoriate him for not doing the things they think he should be doing, or simply just make up bizarre shit on the fly.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, July 07, 2016. On this day in 1865 Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt were hanged for the murder of Abraham Lincoln.

Whoops, just saw that. If the Lincoln assassination interests you, a very (IMO) good book to read about it is the 1939 novel The Man Who Killed Lincoln by Philip Van Doren Stern:

The Rodney King video was shot from a distance by a nearby resident of Lake View Terrace, George Holliday. (For a while, I thought there was a place called Lake Futeras, but now I live fairly close to the place.) The biggest problem with the video is most people only saw a few seconds that went by on the news and not the entire video that was shown to the jury. While the lead officer, Stacy Koon, should have done a better job of controlling the situation, the full video makes it clear King was being phenomally stupid. Meanwhile, the two other men in the car with King stood off to one side untouched and wondering why he was being such an idiot.

If the cops had made the video, including audio, it was have gotten a lot less traction as King's behavior would have been more apparent at that range and the dialogue would have emphasized King's lack of cooperation with what started as a simple traffic stop.

534 If you're going on a boat, I don't know the specifics regulations but I believe boat captains can officiate at marriages. Of course the boat captain may not be a Christian-which would be a problem

535 I like your fiancee. ;^) It's always good to marry someone who has a sense of humor.

I did not think about that! You might be right. When the marina opens, I think I'll ask. Thanks Fenelon!

537 And if this is a regular thing the boat captain does-takes people out who want to get married on the water- he's probably officiated tbefore because many people getting married don't go to church or don't have a clergyperson. There would probably be an additional fee, if he can do it, however.

538 If the guy that got shot was a Crip as CTH says, no way he had a CPL. Reaching for a gun, especially if you are in a gang is a great way to get shot.

Whatever. A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth gets its shoes on. That is what the left relies on with their LIVs.
