Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum]

Welcome to the Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Get comfy and relax. You won't find any current events and/or politics discussed here.

Bear Country Can Be Dangerous

Does Fido really need the remote?

Here's a feel good story involving a young dog and a young girl.

Meet the PetMorons

Another fine bunch of characters this week. Thank you for sharing.

zz johnnyl.png

Say "Hello" to Chester. He's a 15 week old Bluetick Coonhound who has a propensity for socks. This cute guy owns johnnyl.

zz joel.jpg

Cats and dogs can get along according to Joel. Here's his cat Mamma Click with Little Bear. Mamma Click was a great surrogate Mom per Joel.

zz rickl.jpg

So this is Kira. We've heard rickl talk about her for quite sometime. She looks right at home on that couch.

zz lirio.jpg

Is this the odd couple? Per Lirio100 no. Although Zee the cat is not as crazy about Ernie the Angora Rabbit as Ernie is about Zee. Cute.

zz harley.jpg

Jane D'oh submitted this photo of Harley. Harley belongs to D'oh Boy. She's part Boxer/Pit Bull. Looks like a top notch service dog.

zz triplets.jpg

So, is raising and training triplets tough? We'll have to ask Mrs. JTB who submitted this photo of Schnitzel, Liesel & Strudel. Angelic pose?

zz californina girl.jpg

California Girl sent this photo in of her 2 babies. Hope she is around to tell us their names. That info wasn't included in submission.

zz margaret.jpg

Margaret submitted this photo of Lakota and Rascal. Rascal had belong to Margaret's mom. Both of these beauties have passed per Margaret.

zz dagnys pets.jpg

Dagny submitted this photo of Jennifer a 2 year old rescue. As you can see the rescue has been a success.

zz gushka.jpg

Rounding up this week's parade of PetMorons are Jellybean & Momo cats owned by Gushka. It appears they have a terrible life of blankets and furniture.

As always, we thank you for stopping by. If you have pet/animal news, tips, photos, etc. you can reach us at petmorons at gee mail dot com.

I wouldn't count on it, unfortunately...

And, can we start up a GoFundMe for johhnyl to get some new socks?

5 Took my very pack-oriented hybrid to the vet this past Monday for her annual shots/checkup. She went total wolf while trying to administer the injections. Her eyes rolled back in her head and 80 lbs was loose in the exam room.

In the process she clawed the hell out of my right forearm. Shredded might be a better word. Ended up taking her outside and finishing the check-up there.
Once we got her back home she converted back to her sweet, lovable self.

Next time, it's tranquilizers at dawn!!

7 our pet news of the week: "LBK" (little black kitteh) aka Moochie, the yard cat that was apparently abandoned by a previous resident of our house, who has been living in the back yard since we moved in back in '03, came in the house this week...

in fact, he now refuses to go back out. guess he's afraid he'll get left again.

at least we can make sure the rest of his time with us is warm comfortable. the rest of the boys aren't too sure about all this, but he's got seniority, so they will just have to cope.

12 Son's sweet dog Harley loves kittehs. Ours don't love her.

After being repeatedly swatted, she comes in the house whimpering and looking nervously for them.

Son says, "Harley. It's just a cat." She's afraid to pass one of them.

Anyhow, last time he was here, they took naps near each other, so things are improving.

13 Gushka, which one is the kitteh what plays fetch? I used to have a cat that would play catch with me (midair catches). Best cat ever...

15 I can't own a dog (as right now life won't permit it), but when I can, I am going to put together a small army of the most vicious, lethal dogs known to man.
I am, of course, talking about basset hounds.
And to all of you out there shaking your heads in disbelief, try playing tug-of-war with one sometime. They don't screw around. DO NOT let the massive ears fool you.

18 There is nothing cuter on earth than a Golden Retriever puppy.

Except, naturally, a basket of Golden Retriever puppies.

Sadly, my best friend's dad's pup joined the Pack Eternal this week. She was fine right up until she wasn't, and then they found aggressive lymphoma--all this week. She was a "purebred pound pup", as we say, and had a good life right up to the end.

Jellybean takes real time to get used to you, and is a little scratchyhead. Mo plays fetch, and likes to fly.

Both are super cute, though.

24 Our oldest kitty, Sandy (she'll be 15 in August) can bat a ball back to me with either front paw. And she'll keep doing it until I'm tired of the game.

She was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and has to have gel applied to the inside of an ear every 12 hours.

So the diabetic kitty is no longer diabetic, and I was overjoyed over no more insulin injections, now it's thyroid medication for the other one.

Sigh. Getting old isn't for sissies, whether human or animal.

Heh. It's her lil' service vest, with a collapsible water container attached.

She has a little flag patch with 'Murica' on it. She is such a sweet baby. Never barks, and loves to give hugs and get tummy rubs. When they lived in the hood and he would take her out for walks, she had a "talent" for knowing when someone was sketchy, and would let out a low growl. Pretty sure she, and Mr. Handgun kept son safe.

48 I dug up this little ode to a former kitty of mine to repost today, as I have been petless for quite a few years now.

http://minx.cc:1080/?post=312010

255 It being Caturday night still and all, I have a couple of cat tails. I've had several over the years, but Blackjack was cool. He liked to play fetch and would frequently start a round, but he added a twist. First he would drop it at your feet, so then you toss it (almost any small object would do). He would bring it back, but drop it just out of reach. If you got up to get it for another toss, he would bring it back but drop it even further out.

His goal was to see how far he could get you to go to fetch it. If you sat there a bit and said 'too far', he would bat it a little closer. Then a little closer. I'm pretty sure he was thinking 'god, these humans can't play fetch worth a crap, they are so damn lazy.'

He was also fond of the philosophy 'revenge is a dish best served cold'. If you managed to piss him off, by yelling at him or even breaking out the dreaded water pistol, he would begin plotting his evil. It could be the 5 am nip of your ankle from ambush, sinking his fangs (lightly) into your head from a rear couch assault, or a full fledged plop into the middle of your chest during a nap. It usually took anywhere from 4 hours to a full day for him to enact his plot. He let you stew in it a bit first.

He was also fond of a wet head. He would stick his head into the shower and wait for you to soak his head. Dripping wet was best.

As a cat, he was a pro.

50 Sorry to hear that, Gushka. Always hard to lose the furry friends.

The mouse reminds me of something that happened to one of my brothers once...apparently a rodent had made its way into the apartment he was sharing at the time, and he and his roommates were figuring out how to rid themselves of it. They tried the peanut-butter-on-mousetrap thing, but it didn't work--in fact they saw one basically turn up its nose at it!

Turns out the peanut butter they had on hand to use was some health food sugar-free sort, and they figured the taste and smell were a turn-off. So they decided to get some normal peanut butter...at which point it hit them: they were now shopping for the mouse...

Heh. If you're willing to bell a bear, go right ahead.

The thing about making lots of noise is right on. The problem with the bells is that they are not loud enough to frighten anything, let alone a bear. A bell tinkling along on someone's backpack - let's face it, even I wouldn't be scared of it.

But I'm scared of "my" mouse.

73 Wonderful pets again this week! Thank you for submitting the pics.

I dog-sat my son's two dogs this week. One is a yellow lab and the other is a small black mix of some sort. I've watched them often and they know the routine. The lab, Ace, is what you would call a fetch addict, so he has plenty of toys at his disposal. However, he is not allowed to play with my green plush frog which is on the large size. It was given to me, it's really not my style, but I like it on my bed because it is soft and comfortable. Ace knows it is off limits as we have gone over this before. I keep it under a pile of pillows on my bed so not to tempt him.

What he does though is whenever I leave to go to the bathroom he does the sweep of the kitchen counters standing on his back legs. Yesterday I went outside to smoke. When I came back in I walked into my bedroom to change my shoes and noticed my pillows were slightly askew. Sure enough the frog was gone.
Going into the living room I see that Ace and the other dog are curled up together on their bed, seemingly asleep. Then I looked into the big plastic dog kennel and there the frog was. Hidden.

I had to laugh. I had only been outside for a few minutes for him to pull this maneuver and then to pretend nothing was going on, feigning sleep.

German shorthair has been a good citizen in the house and a good bird finder. Arthritic shoulder means the end of that passion for him. The Pointer is a challenge. She was not socialized well by her prior owner, both with dogs and people.

Son had never owned a dog, but within a couple of weeks had her fully house trained, and he has trained her to obey word and hand commands.

She's smart as a whip, and as I said up-thread, so sweet. Loves everyone she meets and wants to give hugs and kisses.

Husband was never much of a dog person for some reason, but came home one day when they were here visiting, with an industrial size bag of dog treats.

She's our "grandpuppy" I guess.

My little black tom had an abscess on his neck that was draining, and the vet offered a cone to keep him from digging into it.
I knew he would go frantic in it so I declined, but I mentioned it felt like dressing the cat up in doll clothes.

The vet was not impressed with that thought.

It's like (given the thread) a dog that gets thrown out of the house for peeing on your couch, who then takes a dump on the doormat because he's mad at you for throwing him out. Quite consistent behavior.

83 I've described before a nightime encounter with a bear and her two clubs. It really got my attention, mostly because as I backed off, the bear began closing up. Walking backwards in the dark, I finally put a enough distance between us that she stopped, but I still had ~1/2 mile to walk back to the house in the dark.

I have become more circumspect about taking the dog out after dark.

As an aside, we have had a woman paddling a stand-up paddle board at the lake two blocks away attacked by a rabid beaver. She's hospitalized and not in great shape apparently.

I did a search, and found that similar attacks are not too unusual. Just a word of warning.

AtC is right. Nature is not as fond of us as we might like to think.

86 I had a Golden/Chesapeake Bay retriever mix, who was actually a bit of a puzzle solver. Figured out how to carry things around in his food bowl to save multiple trips. Runt of the litter, ended up around 110-120 lbs lean (massive for a retriever).

Ate a couch before his first birthday.

Grammy, over the years i have had four. they are the very best pets i have EVER had. Not quite like normal cats and very fragile in my experience. I had two boys and two girls. Little Mo was an F2 outcross and had fur, though his siblings did not.
the others were not greasy. But they would smell like a sweaty baby if they needed a bath.

Mine were very hairless though i have seen some with more or less peachfuzz and i did have to clean around their claws for grunge. Grimmy would bathe them or wipe them with pet wipes for a field shower, and they didnt mind the wipes at all. The first mare i had HATED baths. Somewhere along the line i think someone messed that up for him. Momo hated Vets. Its like he got fixed and decided those people were screwed up monsters. Cant really blame him. Very smart cats, use their paws as hands and can hold things very ably with them. More than once i have had a little hairless baby jump up and hang from my knee length hair, when it was down and drying. But they are high energy cats and need to be played with and have stimulation, and they are very smart and can work things out, like how to turn doorknobs and open closed doors and get into things to explore. Very chatty. Mo would chirp for attention and then show you what he wanted fixed, from an uncovered dump left by Jellybean, to an empty food dish, or a stale water he wanted changed. The others i used to call my Snitches. they woup hop on my shoulder and tell me all kinds of things. I have no idea what, but they had stories.
The two girls were exposed to that chinese gluten that was tainted. One was a hound for the wet food and so she was more exposed and died sooner of cancer. The other developed lymphoma and when she got too sick i didnt put her through a lot of treatment and said goodbye. Momo was sudden. We tried to treat for a bunch of stones in the bladder and multiple obstructions, but he crashed during treatment and we had to say goodbye. He always hated vets, i sometimes wonder if he just gave up because he was in the hospital. My Vet and i were both bawling. I have never seen that happen before. I do love her so.

113 One more post before I head out.

There was a story complete with terrifying picture, of a six foot rattlesnake that fell off a piling onto a floating dock on River Street in Savannah just before the fireworks started. Friends had docked their boat there and set up folding chairs right where the snake plopped out. The snake slithered into the river, and swam toward another dock, and people splashed an oar to scare it away, and it came back to the original dock.

Finally, it ended up swimming up the river, full of boats, and a police river squad shot it.

Husband had a job site directly across the river a few years ago, and one of his people had to shoot a pair of 6' rattlers that had claimed the work site. They ended up being dinner for the Scout troop afterward, and the employee used the skins for something.

People don't realize there is the occasional alligator in the river (and once in a while one will wander out of the river into town) and yes, there are snakes. Now I've skeeved myself out.

Later, all.

145 Aw, I didn't realize I had sent that photo of Kira. The color balance is off; it looks too green. But it was such a cute pose.

Anyway, here is the story of her mother Chloe, expanded from a comment in the morning thread:

***

Once I had a rat in my apartment. I had had mice before and managed to get rid of them and plugged up the openings to keep more from getting in.

But then I found clear evidence that a rat had gotten in. I have no idea how, but I saw larger turds and a pile of aluminum foil bits and macaroni stashed behind the stove. It must have gotten them out of the trash can.

My downstairs neighbor had recently adopted a kitten which was nearly full-grown. The neighbor and her kids were going away for the weekend and I asked if I could borrow Chloe. At age 42 I had never had a cat before, so I had to buy cat food, a litterbox, and litter.

Chloe didn't kill the rat, but she must have persuaded it to leave somehow, because I never saw any more evidence.

At the end of the movie "Titanic", Jack was freezing in the ocean and said to Rose floating on the wreckage, "Winning that ticket was the best thing that ever happened to me. It brought me to you."

I could have said the same thing to Chloe regarding the rat.

I fell madly in love with her, and it was clearly mutual. I eventually ended up adopting two of her kittens and I love them very much. Leo died in 2007 but I still have Kira, who is 16 now.

But my relationship with Chloe was on a whole different plane. I have never bonded with an animal like that before or since. I could go on for hours with stories about her. When I slipped into baby talk, she would toss her head and give me a "Don't patronize me" look. This happened not once or twice, but repeatedly.

She was never officially "my" cat, but I fully expect to be reunited with her at the Rainbow Bridge. I have met my soulmate in this life, and she turned out to be a cat.

149 Have any of you encountered issues with the "doggy flu" that is going around? IIRC I first heard about it last year, but it's finally hit our area - including our boarding facility. My girls haven't caught it, but they've asked that they be given the intranasal bordetella, which I gather vaccinates against a wider spectrum than the more typic vaccine.

We're doing it, but I'm just curious of any of your pets have come down with this "flu."

I have a Great Dane. She is a natural hunter. I can't kill things so I don't hunt. So far she has managed to drag bunnies, rodents, and showed up with a birds wing in her mouth last week. I don't know what happened to the rest of the bird and don't want to think about. She almost killed one of my chickens bc I let her out and forgot that I had let them out their coop to eat grasshoppers. She managed to get a handful of feathers before I stopped her and saved my hen. Certain breeds are just made to hunt. I hate dealing with the dead animals but that's what she is made for.

I was suprised the spiders have personalities too, but i guess if my snakes did then a spider would follow. its hilarious that the first tarantula was "sweet" and just wanted to be fed and taken care of and never acted aggressive and this one shows its fangs, charges, and is hateful even when being cared for. I wonder if one was born captive and one was caught in the wild and that accounts for the difference?

i know different breeds of snakes can me all the difference in temper and all mine were hand raised by me from hatchlings, so they were friendly little fat socks. But i really wanted a white lipped python, and because they are tree snakes that eat birds they are bitey, super fragile, and grumpy as pets, even when hand raised from hatching. I decided against it, finally. Vet bills for herps are pricey.

I was out shooting ground squirrels one morning, and while moving into a position to get a shot off on one, several others stood up near their holes, and started sounding their warning 'chirps'. There was a golden eagle flying up pretty high where the squirrels could see it.

What the squirrels didn't see was it's mate, which swooped past me a few feet off the ground, and neatly plucked the big fat one off his mound while it was facing the other eagle, chirping away.

We've flown our cats a couple of times (for cross-country moves) and it works great. IIRC the fee was something like $100 (give or take). Only challenging part is that you have to take the cat out of the carrier as you're going through security screening. That's hard to do when you've got luggage, laptops, etc, so if we do it again, we'll check all of our bags.

178 Dog meets bear story. I see bear sign all the time on my property but almost never see a bear because they are regularly hunted her. For nine years I had a rescue German Shepherd Akita cross named Cooper. If there were guests in a nearby campground I'd keep Cooper on a leash when we walked
as his 100 lb size scared people. If no
strangers were around, I'd let him lose as we walked so he could go amuse himself in the woods.

I have a neighbor who as a joke put a lifelike statue of a deer in his field some 100 yards or so from the state maintained road. One year he added a life size black bear and then, once they were reintroduced to the area, an elk statue. I think he gets a kick counting the bullet holes they collect.

Shortly after the bear statue was installed, I was walking back from another neighbor's house when we passed about 50 yards from the deer and bear statues. Cooper growled and charged, yanking the leash out of my hand. He circled around the bear statue several times, barking like a fool. He then froze, then ambled back to me with a really sheepish look on his face.

I don't know. Perhaps it's a local thing.

We have plenty of hummingbirds in the north Dallas suburbs and when we celebrated our anniversary in a cabin about 10 miles outside of Ardmore last weekend, there were lots of hummingbirds and they were fighting for territory.

The only thing I've noticed is that there seems to be fewer ruby-throated hummingbirds and much more black-chinned hummingbirds.

I haven't read of any issues with hummingbirds but perhaps there is something to this.

All the moth balls did after over a month was stink up the yard & cause me to always be present to supervise the dog from the moth balls. So I removed the moth balls today after I saw the ground hog pick one up & simply toss it aside. I have never had this problem before because in the past I always had big dogs, is what I am thinking. I've had some bad luck over the (only) 8 years of dog ownership, the worst of which is when it's clear that they haven't followed feeding instructions correctly. One of my dogs has a fussy tummy, so she has to be fed her regular food -- which I pre-measure and place in ziploc bags (1 per meal; 2x per day). When her dog bag comes back with lots of baggies full of food still in it, I worry.

I've had other things such as one horrible experience when I had to board her for a couple of nights at a vets office -- we had just moved to the town so I though "vet will be safe, if not luxurious." Nope. She came back "hand shy."

A couple of times over the years one or the other has come down with a bladder infection - a result of dirty water and/or not being let out enough.

Reading up on what happened with the boarding operation that Senator Flake's kid runs (or manages) really freaked me out -- that's the case where they had A/C problems in Arizona.

So I worry about things like: will my rough collie be left outside too much? will she be fed/watered properly? will she be let out enough? is the facility properly ventilated or air conditioned?

I also don't like to board them in a very raucous kennel environment if I can help it.

It's tough b/c there seem to be two main types of boarding facilities: the big row of cages of barking dogs type and the "we love your fur-babies" types (that often seem to be run by mental midgets).

Best boarding situation we ever had was in SoCal. Place was run by a dog trainer (iirc a former police dog trainer) and they had lots of planned activities for the dogs, including things like running them along with a bicycle and play time.

Their safety is the biggest concern for me, but even that can be hard to come by no matter how much I'm willing to spend.

Thanks, I will think about that. I have a standard rat terrier too, but he is old, going blind, and I am not sure I could handle yet another dog now too. My toy terrier is miniture rat terrier so she tries, she really does try. When I had a Rott he got scratched really bad on his nose from a groundhog, that's part of my fear. Those hogs are vicious with two front teeth like a beaver. And they can climb like a possum, didn't know how high hogs could climb until today. Ack! But thanks for your suggestion anyway.

Off the top of my head, I think we're paying $25/dog at the current place (it might be less than that). They have group doggy play time, indoor (therefore a/c) spaces for the dogs, and a few activities.

Except for a bad grooming experience at this place, it's been fine.

They're a little into the "fur babies" mode which is not my favorite in terms of inspiring confidence, but we haven't had problems.

210 Sixkiller- I am sure you have had times when a person is telling you one thing and your dog is telling you the truth. I even had a cat that could tell a fraud from a thousand paces.

211 Prayers for Rosie -- pug of 14 years who passed Tuesday (put to sleep, she had lung, brain, and heart issues exacerbated by a tumble down porch stairs). She was a show-pug before we got her, but we had her for almost ten years and she was a wonderful pet. Hit my folks really hard,

She is survived by two cats and one boxer.

She will be missed.

212 I must instill a different ethos in my dogs because the are not willing to do the group doggie thing. This is their home and you don't just walk in. Two legged or four, you either get an introduction or your out of here.

213 acethepug- so sorry for your loss, but after the loss comes the memories of all the special times they gave you.

214 Ben Had, thank you. Yes, she was special. And I know, parents' age or not, we will be getting a new dog someday

Thank you.

215 The thing about losing a beloved pet is you cry until you can laugh about all the love they gave you.

216 Jan Doe @ 4:22- 6 ft rattlers, yo.
Back in the 70's in the spray business, had occasion to hunt them when it was raining or too windy to fly. I killed some monsters in that stretch between Homestead Fla. and Lumberton N.C. We would walk between the rows and shoot them with a Ruger SingleSix .22mag. That was exciting. Now a lot of that farmland is golf courses and tennis courts for yankees.

217 Rikl's cat Kira looks just like our wonderful cat Puddy! We had him for fifteen years.

Today we went to see "The Secret Life of Pets" with daughter and her boyfriend.

LOVED THAT MOVIE. I highly recommend it to every Body!

Spot on, Ben!
We have to give the 'introduction' for new people at our house. I'll take the newb to one or two dogs at a time, with my hand on their shoulder and tell the dogs "he's a good boy" (meaning the newb), and rub the newb's shoulder. Then the dogs are okay with him/her. Even then, NOBODY trusts the Dobie or the Dane...and you know, I'm okay with that too.
Now the Bluetick...ole Dixie Belle is head of the welcoming committee. We have yet to have anyone over that Dixie doesn't approve of...she's so friendly.
My brother came over after having not visited for a year or so...and during his absence we rescued a 5 month old Pit. By the time baby bro shows up (and baby bro is 6'2" and 225), the Pit is over a year old and firmly established as Momma's Protector-in-Chief. Bro actually tries to walk in the door from the garage...which leads to the Master Suite...which is doggie domain. I'm sitting on the bench at the foot of the bed taking off my boots when baby bro opens the door. Two things happened almost simultaneously: the Pit launched for him - he was airborne - and my wife's arm snaked out and latch hold of his collar just before he could begin eating my brother. I said to him, "Dude. Ya gotta be smarter than that. I told you we had two new dogs and I told you what they were. They don't know you from Adam."
Good times.

219 Sixkiller, I love that story but the part about the Dane and people never trusting him/her makes me sad. I have one too. I get that reaction all the time. People also always assumes that she must be a boy which irritates me to no end. Mine is the biggest sweetheart in the whole wide world, but people are instinctively afraid of her bc of her strength and size. I feel so bad for her. She loves attention but only long time dog owners ever approach her. Everyone else looks down or averts their eyes and pretend they don't see her. She gets lots of smiles and waves when I take for her a drive and have her big head sticking out the window.

220 Heartfelt thanks for the prayers and kind thoughts, and love to those who have lost pets themselves.

Ben Had, you're OK in our pack anytime.

221 Sorry, I missed yesterday. If anyone wants to know, that's my son, Joel, holding my new baby, Buster. No, DJ Jazzy, that's not me! Thanks for the laugh, though.
