I am straight sick of it. If you watch the news, much less listen to activists, it sounds like there is a police war against blacks, and they speak as though it must be silently conceded that police kill black suspects at a higher rate than other races.

we just redid an area of pavers that were causing water build up issues (the contractor sukked when they originally put them in), and I'm enjoying rainy days and watching it drain correctly this weekend. It's a relief, it seems to have worked. Took us a while to redo them, but worth it.
still need to do some other outside home maintenance, but that was the big one

Used to enjoy it too. I'd sit and watch races with my dad as a kid back when he enjoyed it too. Still some old time drivers and vets at the time. But, like you, I don't like what it's turned into. Well, now it's been five days since we saw mouse number two in our kitchen, and we still haven't caught him. He is fastidiously avoiding about 6 or 8 traps, set with peanut butter - glue traps, spring traps, those little mouse hotel traps.
The entire contents of my pantry are all over my counters, island, table, and stacked on the floor of my family room (it's a big pantry). I can't do anything in the kitchen except pour coffee because I have no room to work.
Help me horde, you're my only hope.

What works best I think are the Victor snap traps. You can even use them unbaited. Mice like to run along walls. Place the traps there, making sure that the metal snap portion, when sprung, goes toward the wall. Otherwise you can fling them into the middle of the room.

There are a number of sticky traps, no exit traps and a few repellant products that work really well. If you still have a mouse after using these, you have the smartest mouse ever to exist. I would name him Jerry.

I've got a rescue dog ... beagle/basset mix. Annoying as hell - barks if the neighbor farts in his own bathroom.
But that dog is death on a cracker when it comes to pests. Mice, rabbits, squirrels - you name it. Sleeps about 18 hours a day. I'm convinced he's just dreaming simulations about how to catch the next varmint.

I know that they are trained to upon touchdown on the deck to slam the throttles all the way forward. Miss a wire, or in this case you snag but it breaks, you'll need all the power and momentum you can get to try to get airborne again when you go shooting over the deck edge.

Conservative Treehouse has done some excellent sleuthing on the Minnesota traffic-stop shooting.
Apparently the cops stopped the car because the driver matched the description of a suspect in an armed robbery a few days earlier. If you look at the photos on CT's site, you can see the clear resemblance between the robber and the driver who was shot. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
Also, saw a couple of headlines yesterday saying that the coroner had ruled the Minnesota death a homicide. Well, duh.
There are only 5 possible causes of death that a coroner can put on a death certificate: homicide, suicide, natural causes, accident, and unknown.
When a person is shot to death by another person, regardless of the circumstances, it is always a "homicide." That doesn't mean it was murder, and it doesn't even mean it was unlawful. Just means that another person caused the death.

I have issues with mice all of the time because of the woods surrounding our home. Traps always work for us. In one night. We have 3, and we put one in the basement, near the pipes they may traverse, and one or two in the kitchen, just under the cabinet against the floor boards. We catch them in the basement the most. But once or twice, the kitchen floor. We use peanut butter, and make it fresh each time.
It might be you have a nest in the house (above the dishwasher, they like that space and you won't know it), or elsewhere, and there is a litter of them.

Once I had a rat in my apartment. I had had mice before and managed to get rid of them and plugged up the openings to keep more from getting in.
But then I found clear evidence that a rat had gotten in somehow. I saw larger turds and a bunch of aluminum foil and macaroni stashed behind the stove.
My downstairs neighbor had recently adopted a kitten which was nearly full-grown. The neighbor and her kids were going away for the weekend and I asked if I could borrow Chloe. At age 42 I had never had a cat before and I had to buy cat food, a litterbox, and litter.
Chloe didn't kill the rat, but she must have persuaded it to leave somehow, because I never saw any more evidence.
Chloe and I became BFFs, and I ended up adopting two of her kittens.
That rat was the best thing that ever happened to me. I had never had a cat before, and now I can't imagine life without them.

FWIW - I've had good luck with the Victor electronic traps. Only problem is if you don't check them frequently they can be pretty disgusting to clean up. But they work when you've got small talented mice that can lick the peanut butter off a snap trap w/o setting it off.

Oh well. My son has a baseball game this afternoon and if they win, his all-star team gets to go to the state tournament next weekend! They won against this team 11-3 last night so it's looking good. My son is the starting pitcher today - fingers crossed!

I saw that '100 skills' column when it first came out. I was pleased that I had done most of them. Two major exceptions.
Changing a diaper. We don't have kids but I was baby sitting a niece and the need arose. In the end I considered staples or duct tape.
Navigating with map and compass. This is a skill I really want to learn but with my sense of direction it is a challenge. If I had been with Lewis and Clark they would have discovered Rhode Island.

I've got family members who are all conservatives that have seriously come about a hair away from physical blows over the election stuff, and then you throw in the general societal decay bull and it just compounds.
I've been reading a lot of Discworld to try and offset the negativity so I don't end up depressed. Nothing like some Pratchett to get the laugh muscles working.

253 he uses some kind of bait blocks. I went from a lot of mice to zero mice just about overnight. The blocks are mostly in the attic with a few in little bait houses in the utility room, behind the stove, etc... It wasn't my first choice, but the mice started chewing on wires - the phone line and my security alarm - and it was only a matter of time until they burned the damn house down.

I had rats at one point.
I received awesome advice from a pro exterminator.
1) Buy traps ( I used T REX: powerful and disposable)
2) Zip tie traps open - so that they will not close even if triggered.
3) Bait traps. Leave in place for a couple of days, reloading the bait as needed. The idea is to get them used to the idea of eating from the traps safely.
4) On Day 3 , cut the zip ties. Boom.
5) Place a full bucket of water nearby to drown any near-kills.
I got 4 rats in a single day within hours of cutting the ties. True story.

Oddly enough, I miss girls' softball. Youngest played for years on local teams and did pretty well and had fun. One year, we lost every single game until the last two and then went on to win the inter-city. It took those independent cusses that long to learn to play as a team and not privileged (my private coach is better than yours) individuals. It was funny and inspiring at the same time.

Ugh, we had mice in our last house. Hubby did those sticky trays - I did not want to even see or touch the mice. One night I had dosed off on the couch in the family room, and was awoken by this light scraping noise under a nearby bureau. Get out the flashlight, look under it and see there's a baby mouse whose back legs are stuck, so he's using his front legs to tray to run away from all - 4 additional (dead) tiny mice in tow. Ugh.

The city had cleaned out the drainage ditch behind a townhouse I owned a decade ago. That resulted in big ass sewer rats in my attic. The first thing I did was put down the largest sticky trap they made. I was watching TV one night and it sounded like someone was in my attic throwing a metal trash can back and forth. Of course it was a chihuahua sized rat and the trap tumbling all around. Lesson was if you are trapping rats, secure the trap to the floor. And a sand wedge to finish the job.

A woman executed by Texas a couple of years ago I think was in the NBPP. She was a horrible person and robbed and murdered elderly women who had been nice to her. I saw a show on some cute little terrier breed in the UK that was once popular but now there are very few left. They are rat dogs and they take them to farms to clear out the rats around barns and other out buildings. Man, these little dogs were vicious. They were covered in rat blood and enjoying it, too.

Facebook refuses to take down the cop decapitation image put up by the black panthers or their allies.
If you wonder why people like me want to see Facebook, Twitter, and even Google broken up, and of course want to see trade and immigration limited this is prime example number 1. Yes it is not traditional economic "conservatism" to wish to see the destruction of successful American companies.
But then again no conservative could have ever dreamed of the day that American companies would support leftism and the destruction of the country. Well that day has arrived, and realism needs to take over. Sitting back and allowing these platforms to be used to promote Anti-American propaganda, and even promoting the slaughter of Americans in the name of the leftist religion is no longer an option.
Start with boycotts, and start supporting those leaders who will use legal means to break the companies up, even if it means making up monopolistic charges to bring them competition, and reduce their political power. One possible trap for a talented mouse is to put PB sandwiches and bacon and such in the bottom of one of those classroom sized metal trash cans.
Mice have the tendency to jump in for the food (or just because) and can't get out.
Dad used to store his tuba in my closet when I was a little kid. He pulled it out for the 4th of July band practice one year, and at the first rest break started shaking the spit out. Mouse mummy rolled out.

Morons, I rise this morning to make a comment for the record, as happens in Congress. After all, this IS a congress.
Last night the Baltimore Orioles celebrated and commemorated the FIFTIETH (50th!!) anniversary of the 1966 World Series Championship team. The assembled members of that champion team were feted and cheered, appropriately so. The men, aged and frail, were once of the finest athletes of their generation. They were powerful, swift, agile and relentless in their sport. As a personal note, I was 10 in 1966, and lived in a region bereft of major league baseball - so I could pick and choose which team to follow, as i became aware. and i chose the Orioles. THESE Orioles.
Thank you for a lifetime of fandom. you were, and remain, great men.

His unit recommended he receive a UOTHC. That's the worst administrative discharge you can get. Any worse you go to court martial. But once he got home, the unit gave him an honorable discharge. Which means his unit commander and the unit jag are lazy fucks who need to be really examined hard over this

Migawd, Eris, those illustrations are gorgeous. I had forgotten the older comics were so intricate and well drawn. I have gotten used to the plot and joke driven comics like Pastis' Pearls Before Swine, and Pastis admits he can't draw.
I loved Calvin and Hobbes because of the composition, and I liked the Tin Tin books because of the detail and how it meshed with the story, but that looks like scrawls on a fence next to Caniff's Terry and the Pirates.
Now I love a lot of Sluggy Freelance, but I now am wondering what the Holiday Wars or the Oceans Unmoving arcs would have looked like if Caniff had done the artwork.

The Orioles were heavy underdogs in 1966. Everybody thought the Dodgers' fabled pitching staff would eat them alive.
Turns out the Orioles didn't need to score very many runs because their own pitchers utterly shut the Dodgers down. LA scored two runs in Game 1, and that was IT.
That was a team performance almost on a par with Christy Mathewson in 1905.

I couldn't believe how the bad Fox News coverage of the Baton Rouge protest was. It was during Hannity's show and it was just so depressing on so many levels,. The reporter on the scene was beyond clueless, and he interviewed the protesters as though he was dealing with people who actually knew what was going on. They were incoherent, spouting "Fuck tha Police" and "Jesus is Love" in equal measure. It was almost like a party atmosphere with people milling about in front to a cordon of police in riot gear, and everyone held their cell phones aloft, aimed at the the nervous-looking cops.
Hannity was being a douche as usual, trying to get the reporter to ask the protesters about the "Pigs in a Blanket. Fry them like Bacon!!" chant from the Dallas protest and the reporter either didn't hear him, or pretended he didn't.
I'm really sad for the future of this country. The black community is largely a disaster, so successful have the Democrats been in reducing them to the status of children.
And the answer to all of this is --by the left and the media --even more of this.

Re: 251 Here at the bunker, I have extensive experience w mice. to solve the problem of them not triggering the trap, while still getting the pnut butter. I take a pair of needlenose pliers and just pinch the trigger loop on the trap pan slightly (that's the part of the trap that holds the spring arm down) to make it more of a hair trigger. Also use a piece of fishing line and 2 thumbtacks, one in the body of the trap and one in a beam or other wood object to keep them from spazzing into an area you cant get to.
