Quote of the Day I

The frights, the cold, the smell of H.E., the horribly smashed men still moving like half-crushed beetles, the sitting or standing corpses, the landscape of sheer earth without a blade of grass, the boots worn day and night till they seemed to grow to your feet - all this shows rarely and faintly in memory. It is too cut off from the rest of my experience and often seems to have happened to someone else.

-- C.S. Lewis on his experiences during WWI

Quote of the Day II

Excluding people from a debate because you disagree with their views is an odd conceit, but odder still is that the practice has rapidly gained credibility on both sides of the Atlantic as morally valid.

-- Peter Wood

Quote of the Day III

One of the most common mistakes people make is to tidy room by room.  This approach doesn't work because people think they have tied up when in fact they have only shuffled their things around from one location to another or scattered items in the same category around the house, making it impossible to get an accurate grasp of the volume of things they actually own.

The correct approach is to tidy by category.  This means tidying up all the things in the same category in one go.  For example, when tidying the clothes category, the first step is to gather every item of clothing from the entire house in one spot.  This allows you to see objectively exactly how much you have.  Confronted with an enormous mound of clothes, you will also be forced to acknowledge how poorly you have been treating your possessions.  It's very important to get an accurate grasp of the sheer volume for each category.

-- Marie Kondo, Japanese expert on tidying

So How Did We Get to Where We Are Now?

Let this video catch you all up on the last few million years +/- a millennia or so. And yes this will be on the exam.

Sarah Palin Calls Republicans Who Won't Support Trump 'Bad People', 'Traitors', Says 'You're Either With Us or Against Us'

Okay. Except that Sarah Palin really has no standing to call out republicans for not supporting the GOP nominee:

With less than 24 hours to go until Election Day, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin endorsed Mitt Romney.

After remaining silent for months, Palin made her case for the GOP ticket in a Facebook posting, arguing that Romney "deserves a chance to lead.".

In contrast, her former running mate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has been a tireless advocate for Romney.

Or lecturing them on putting party loyalty above personal feelings:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin snubbed home state Republicans this year, instead endorsing an independent candidate for governor and his Democratic running mate for lieutenant governor.

Her across-the-aisle endorsement is a jab at incumbent Republican Gov. Sean Parnell, who served as Palin's lieutenant governor when she was the head of the Alaskan state government from 2006 to 2009.

During her tenure as governor, Palin increased oil taxes in the state, a revenue generator for Alaska heralded by the 2008 vice presidential candidate as one of her biggest achievements. But Parnell dismantled the tax, causing a divide between the former coworkers.

I'll just say it - Sarah Palin has been a huge disappointment to me.

I really loved her in 2008 and even when she abruptly resigned as governor I still thought she had large role ahead of her either as a pundit/writer or as a political kingmaker on the Right. But as the years went on she kept playing footsie with running for the Senate or presidency even when it was past its expiration date and she just wasn't all that impressive as a writer or as a pundit. But this year of all years should have been her moment to shine - but she's basically been the political dog that didn't bark (and I'm even making allowances for the disruption of Todd's snowmobile accident and his recovery).

Frankly her speeches and writings this year have been pretty bad - almost embarrassingly so (the one in the link is the best in a while and it's...okay - if you can overlook its Loretta Sanchez nature.). She's one of the few politicians whose speaking and writing skills have actually deteriorated over time. I have some theories as to why but since Ace has enough lawyer trouble, I'll just leave them unspoken.

Festivals in Northern Europe Are Now Pretty Much Grope and Rape Fests

Due to the usual suspects which the authorities very much don't want to talk about.

The Swedish police face over 40 reports of rape and sexual assault at two music festivals over the weekend in Karlstad and Norrköping.

The police have identified seven suspects described as "foreign young men."

The victims are mostly under 18-years-old with three under 15. The youngest victim is only 12-years-old.

New Food Stamp Rules Will Kill Many Convenience Stores

On Feb. 16 the department announced a rule that would require Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-authorized retail establishments to offer seven varieties of foods in four staple food groups such as dairy, breads and cereals, meats, poultry and fish, and fruits and vegetables on a continuous basis. Stores would also be required to stock at least six units of each variety, meaning there would have to be at least 168 of the required foods at the store.

..."They changed the underlying definition of staple foods to exclude foods that have multiple ingredients so that a mixed fruit cup or can of chicken noodle soup could no longer be counted towards a retailer's stocking requirements," Ready said.

Why Cops Fear Domestic Disputes

When a man and woman became involved in an altercation in their vehicle at 1:30 a.m. in Prince Solms Park in New Braunfels, TX, seven soldiers from Fort Hood intervened to resolve the situation between the two.

Thinking the situation was resolved, the soldiers went on their way, but unbeknownst to them, the good samaritans had only merged the couple's anger and directed it toward them.

The soldiers, ages 18-25, told police the female retrieved a 9 mm handgun under the driver's seat and handed it to her boyfriend, who immediately began shooting at the soldiers.

New Braunfels Police said the soldiers stated they were forced to run to their vehicles for cover as the suspect continued to fire in their direction. One soldier was able to retrieve his personal handgun and shoot "cover fire" to ensure his fellow soldiers could find cover.

New Marine Corps Fitness Standards for Combat Weed Out Men, Women Alike

But mostly women.

The Marines developed a detailed progression of physical standards that recruits must meet to get into the combat jobs. And officials insist that standards will not be lowered to allow more women to pass.

The results underscore the difficulties for women. Nearly 86 percent of the women failed the tests, compared to less than 3 percent of the men.

So far this year of the 7 women recruits attempting to qualify for a combat position, 6 have failed. Which clearly means the standards are sexist since they didn't yield the correct results.

Ringo Starr, Ordinary Lad

Growing up in an environment of abject poverty, neglect, and poor health Richard Starkey AKA Ringo Starr was by all accounts - likely including his own - destined for the scrapheap of humanity and an early death. But when he was 13 years old and recovering from tuberculosis in a sanitarium something happened which gave him a purpose in life and set him on a completely different course.

These days it's common to dis Ringo's skills as a drummer but there are reasons he deserves respect including the fact that he kept amazingly consistent timing through multiple takes without ever using a click track.

30 What tells me that we are well and truly lost forever is current events. A moslem Democrat slaughters 50 people in a gay club...and days later, in a "Pride" parade, the gays carry a banner which states "Republican hate kills."

That is such an extreme denial of reality that it's not even a strategy--these are a group of people not saying "Take us last" but "Take us first. We will willingly put our heads in the Morlocks' mouths."

When simple self-preservation is seen as too politically risky...I don't know.

I'm thinking the gays are going to request that if they have to be thrown from buildings, they at least get to choose the decor. Wouldn't want to be flung from something tacky!

It is one of the odd things about modern people (blame the school, the media, whomever, or all) that they continually believe that whatever bad thing is out there, it can never happen to them.

They do not see a need to buy a gun, because a bad guy will never threaten them or their family.

They do not fear islamic terrorism, because it will never strike them personally (this is aided by the media constantly burying any example of or ties to Islam.)

They take out huge loans, because they cannot foresee themselves not being able to find a job with the women and minority BS degree.

They cannot imagine tyranny of the government, because they live in the freest nation on earth (for the moment.)

The examples go on ad nauseam.

In this case, the idiots do not believe they have to worry about it, or they believe the tripe about the shooter being in a right wing republican.

Ignorant or malicious, reality always eventually cashes it's check.

-- Peter Wood

And yet, why would one engage people who use buzzwords and cliches that make one known as a member of the "others"?

They do it all the time and increasingly, so do we. But why engage with someone who you know is educated enough to use the correct venacular of your enemy?

Only to win the minds of onlookers. Not to have an honest discussion with someone who is dishonest in the portrayal of their views.

It's usually not worth the effort, and I don't blame those who choose not to engage, nor would I fault one for engaging with a fist instead of wasted logic and reason.

How baffling it was that even the most cunning and clever people would frequently see only what they wanted to see, and would rarely look beyond the thinnest of facades. Or they would ignore reality, dismissing it as the facade. And then, when their whole world fell to pieces and they were on their knees slitting their bellies or cutting their throats, or cast out into the freezing world, they would tear their topknots or rend their clothes and bewail their karma, blaming gods or kami or luck or their lords or husbands or vassals -- anything or anything -- but never themselves."

64 During her tenure as governor, Palin increased oil taxes in the state, a revenue generator for Alaska heralded by the 2008 vice presidential candidate as one of her biggest achievements.

And that's a lie. She did not increase taxes. The oil revenues are generated by charging the oil companies for the oil they remove from land owned by the state of Alaska. If it was private land, the oil companies would have to pay the land's owner for the rights to take the oil. Same thing applies when the oil companies drill on state land. Palin increased the amount the state was charging for the oil removed from the state's land, but that is not a tax. She argued that the oil companies were getting a sweetheart deal in the past and the increase was fair. The money's generated by the revenues are distributed to Alaska's residents. Palin actions were very popular with her employers: the residents of Alaska.

76 Ringo is a great drummer by any measure (SWIDT?). He adjusted his drumming to fit the music instead of developing a one-size-fits-all style.

I've read that out of all the takes that the Beatles made in recording their songs, less than a dozen failed because of a mistake that Ringo made. It also wasn't uncommon for the Beatles to, say, combine takes 7 and 15 and have them mesh perfectly because Ringo's rhythm was so precise.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 05, 2016 11:48 PM (3ZoRf)

++++

If we were talking about a fee for state services rendered, you would have a point. But, we are talking about private companies taking a limited natural resource from state lands. The various oil companies compete for the rights to do so. That is a market, just like it would be if the land were privately held. The companies have the option of drilling somewhere else for oil. The state's oil revenue doesn't come from any drilling the companies do on private land, it only come from the state-owned land. It's not like a tax at the pump, where you have no choice but to pay it

It's not a tax and it is inaccurate to call it one. But, CNN isn't picky about being accurate when it comes to Palin.

Ringo wasn't the drummer on only two Beatles songs: Back in the USSR and Ballad of John and Yoko. He may not have drummed on one of their earliest recordings that used a session drummer for some takes.

The Beatle excluded from the most songs is, surprisingly, George. He had lots of troubles working out his solos and Paul or John often stepped in. Paul even played lead guitar on Taxman, a song that George wrote. He just couldn't work out a solo and Paul stepped in to perform a memorable lead in a single take.

Actually, it was originally a straight novel, 'All You Need Is Kill.' The protagonist is a Japanese grunt in his early 20s, so they had to rework some to suit Tom Cruise's age and ethnicity. I wish that had been an option for me. I was wayyyy ahead of the class on reading and didn't get on well with kids my age. A doctor had recommended to my mother that she wait another year before putting me in school, so I'd be a bit more mature. It might have seriously altered the course of my life if there had been any option for home study so I could go at my own pace and then focus on the areas where I needed more help. I learned many years later that the six year gap between my two eldest siblings meant the first sister gave the other one a boost. I guess that game had gotten old when it came to me, the youngest. If I'd been moved ahead some grades, it might have been better to be an oddball among older kids than my own age group.

Being the youngest presented another problem. After five kids, getting them all in school for part of the day was a hugely desirable thing for my mother, even more so after an injury made it critical for her to go to work while he recovered.

Posted by: Epobirs at July 06, 2016 12:33 AM (IdCqF)

194 And yet, why would one engage people who use buzzwords and cliches that make one known as a member of the "others"?

They do it all the time and increasingly, so do we. But why engage with someone who you know is educated enough to use the correct venacular of your enemy?

Only to win the minds of onlookers. Not to have an honest discussion with someone who is dishonest in the portrayal of their views.

It's usually not worth the effort, and I don't blame those who choose not to engage, nor would I fault one for engaging with a fist instead of wasted logic and reason.

Posted by: cthulhu at July 06, 2016 12:35 AM (EzgxV)

198 Yeah, I remember McGoohan as the military academy commander, and as a slick spy who murdered one of his agents (played by Leslie Nielsen). Every since Nielsen went full comedy clown, I can hardly watch any of his older straight roles without laughing, seeing him as Lt. Frank Drebin, and that Columbo role was one of them.

Looking it up, he played twice in the first Columbo series in the '70s, then two more when they restarted it in the '90s.

And yeah, it's bunk that Hoover was a crossdresser, but the image of J. Edgar running around in some ridiculous dress is just damned hilarious.

And I'll note that nobody ever said anything about that while he was alive, too.

That's how one might become a great drummer and I am certainly not, but not too bad. All about the parts and especially the 'feel' which belies capabilities but does required said capabilities.

254 Just as a primer for y'all -- mixed-mode PCBs in the 90s were manufactured to (a) have a metal mask put on them; (b) squitch solder paste through the mask put on sensitive spots; (c) have surface-mount components "pick-and-placed" onto the board (you had two rectangular "pads" on the PCB 3mm apart; on top of those pads you plop some solder paste; then you put a 7mm-long part so that its 1mm ends are firmly in the paste on the pads); (d) you run this through an IR oven that melts the solder paste and bonds the SMT to the board. [The toaster-oven trick simulates this.]

You then (e) "stuff the holes" on the board with your through-hole components, and (f) run it through a wave-solder machine. Wave-solder is designed to make a standing-wave in molten metal such that the crest of a "swell" is always above the walls of the container. You can then pull your PCBs on a track above the walls but through the wave. This solders all your through-hole parts in one pass.

Everything else is bullshit. That is the choice. We are supposed to be adults. We don't get perfect options in life. We have to choose from the best we have at the time.

Who would you rather have? Nobody is telling you Trump is perfect, or close to it.

Do you want the woman who should be serving prison time for a host of crimes in the White House, or do you want Trump?

That is it!

And just like Palin who endorsed the indy running over the GOP, she did so because she felt the GOP guy was the worse candidate. You can disagree but that is sound logic, just like her saying today that HILLARY IS THE WORSE CANDIDATE.

Are people so hellbent on disagreeing with everything she fucking does that they won't even admit to themselves that HILLARY CLINTON, who should be in prison, is worse than trump for conservatives!?

A royalty is not a tax. A royalty is the fee paid to the owner of the resource by the operator. If I, as operator, drilled a well on on "freehold" land, where the surface rights owner also owned the mineral rights, (a situation rare in Canada, but commonplace in the USA) I would pay the landowner a royalty of X dollars per barrel pumped.

It's not a tax if the landowner is Farmer Jones, and it's not a tax if the landowner is the great State of Texas. It's just the owner getting their agreed-upon share of the pie.

Surface tension helps, but it's mainly the creation of a standing wave -- which, if there are any glitches, can readily turn into a slopping wave.

300 Surface tension helps, but it's mainly the creation of a standing wave -- which, if there are any glitches, can readily turn into a slopping wave.

Did not know that. Well there's the one thing I needed to learn. Despite everything else, it's now a good day.

Oddly enough, they got the big bucks because (a) they're analog -- so there's no digital or automated fix; and (b) they're titchy little bastards. So a substantial amount of manufactured stuff made here was based on craftsmanship.

I'm trying to recall. Seems as though to me that the molten solder was pumped vertically to create a lateral 'bump' that the boards passed through.

At any rate, there were generally Rework stations that received boards that had solder bridges. Ideally there would be none, but there are a lot of variables.

332 I can say one thing about the new lead-free solder: it is a right PITA to unsolder components from board assembled using it.

I don't know if it's still a problem, but some of the early lead-free solder had an issue with developing "zinc whiskers". They were real common in power supplies. I bet you can guess why that might be a problem.

347 In the earlier days, it was usual for boards to pass through a lead-trimmer. Which was a saw that trimmed away leads extending through the boards.

A problem with that was that the trimmed leads had edges that were very sharp. Most handlers wore gloves, but one had to overcome the instinct to catch a board if it was dropped. Otherwise, you would end up with sliced fingertips.

This despite the fact that the "CO" on my documents was IN THE SPACE FOR THE US STATE CODE. And following the US EXPORTER'S ADDRESS.

Now I have a pissed off client, my bosses are on my ass and the DHS is on my ass. And I was unable to resolve any of this yesterday so it will be waiting for me today. And I will be dead tired while dealing with it.

383 Here is what Paul Ryan said about Trump and his sherriff star:

"But most importantly, as you know, one of the few times I spoke out against him during the primary very forcefully was in this area, when he failed to disavow supremacists, white supremacists."

So Ryan gives himself a big pat on the back . . . for playing right into the hands of Democrats. Does he not get that the headline "Trump disavows KKK," that the whole point of that headline is to connect Trump and KKK? Does he not get that Obama is not so stupid as to "disavow" the Black Panthers or Nation of Islam? Is Ryan really this stupid? Whites like Ryan are like house cats, they have lost all of their natural survival instincts and think that the food arrives in the bowl every morning like magic.

385 Does anyone honestly think Trump would have ever become a macher in NYC real estate if he had an anti-Jewish bone in his body? Of course not. But he does understand - and Ryan doesn't understand - that it's humiliating to constantly be making apologies for existing. Trump doesn't have to disavow "white supremacism" any more than Chuck Schumer has to apologize for firghting for Israel. 392 So what if Trump were a racist? And? There are two kinds of racism that I think people don't distinguish. There is "back of the bus" racism, the majority abusing it's power to disadvantage other groups. Most people agree that is wrong. Then there is ordinary, everyday racism - dating people who look like you, wanting to send your kids to a school where they will be surrounded by their kind, etc. What we've done is take the "back of the bus" racism and conflate it with every other kind. Racism is perfectly natural and harmless most of the time. If you go on a dating app and click "I want to date a) whites b) blacks" etc then nobody is going to fault you. We have to stop pretending that all forms of racism are equally noxious.

If the GOPe actually wanted to learn any lessons from Trump's campaign, they could start with "Stop The Damn Apologizing."

It never works. In fact, Trump has proven the opposite to be true. His numbers go up when he refuses to apologize.

Trump's been in the public eye for what, 40 years now and never been accused of racism or anti-Semitism until he decided to run with an (R) after his name. Same Trump who opened golf courses that he bought to blacks and Jews who had been banned there under previous ownership.

399 It's not just stop the apologizing, they've got to be unapologetic. They have to realize that whites are effectively already a minority. Whites have to adopt the mentality of the minority and can no longer - as the boomers did - adopt the perspective of the Great White Father who is going to shower justice and goodies on other groups. Stop going to Africa to hold black babies over your shoulder. Those days are already over, Paul Ryan just doesn't get that, probably because he lives in Wisconsin, which is in about 1970 on the California calendar. Whites in California have no illusions about where the country is headed, people like Kaus and Sailer and VD Hanson.

401 A Voxxer says "mobilization of majoritarian ethnic identity is bad for the Jews, whether Trump likes it or not." That's wrong. Let's think about this in terms of international relations. Which is better for Israel - a world in which US is the dominant power, or a world in which China, Russia, Japan, Germany, and US are all equally matched? That one is pretty easy to figure out, right? Jews would suffer greatly in an ethnic free for all in which each ethnic group were out for itself. Just look at the turmoil on campuses these days. It used to be "Jews versus the establishment," that was the subtext of movies like Animal House. But now its "blacks versus their Jewish professors," that's the subtext of BLM protestors complaining about too much Marx, not enough Jay-z in English class. Jews don't thrive in a world where they are the 1% and are the target of the 99%.

More is a man of an angel's wit and singular learning. I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness and affability? And, as time requireth, a man of marvelous mirth and pastimes, and sometime of as sad gravity. A man for all seasons

A policy makes Slurpees and fountain drinks eligible for purchase with an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.

The policy comes with a stipulation to ensure the items remain eligible for purchase with an EBT card. The drink machines at several 7-11s have signs posted that instruct customers to put a lid on the drink, but not to insert a straw while they are in the store. Failure to comply would make the drink a ready-to-consume item and subsequently ineligible for EBT purchase.

Posted by: Mr. Curious at July 06, 2016 07:16 AM (p9Lqy)

461 What killed the Oregon ObamaCare Exchange (sidebar)?

Cannibalism.

HealthyCT, whose motto is"Plans for People. Not for Profit," learned Thursday that it had to pay $13.4 million to the federal government because of the risk adjustment rules that are part of the complex Obamacare system.

Under risk adjustment, plans that cover more healthy people have to send money back to the government, which is then redistributed to other plans that have a sicker population.

"It's really, really important to have it," Sabrina Corlette, a professor at Georgetown University's Center on Health Insurance Reforms, said of the risk adjustment rules. The program exists "to keep all the companies playing nicely together in the sandbox and not avoid sicker people."

The Feds take funds to redistribute, leaving the exchange unable to function. Outright bureaucratic predation.

It seems a 'non-profit' exchange still needs enough surplus (don't call it 'profit!') to withstand the leeches.

Palin's words:

...the Ruling Class put another boot on our neck to snuff liberty's life out of We the People...

...Don't put blind faith in any politician, but don't give up on our forefathers' charters of freedom that created a Republic to be governed by and for We the People...

...Unite behind those who have no part in the corrupt political machine that would mock, silence and destroy the outsiders committed to serving for the right reasons; oppose all who campaign one way but govern another once they get to Washington and get sucked in to both party establishments that reward and protect their own...

475 Saw a cop car this morning that I would have sworn was being driven by Hillary. Made two right turns without signaling.
Had that been me, I'd have a ticket right now.

478 "federal funding specifically grant PP these federal funds"

PP is an "open secret" GSE. The politicians worship Moloch. They sacrifice children for fun and profit. The fact that this has been going on so long says that all the "blue bloods" are in on it. Probably why W had a drinking problem. W came across in public as a decent guy. Feel sorry for him having such a corrupt and despicable family. W could have never gotten into politics. Has blood on him just like his father. Somebody claim that Romney isn't in on this also. I need a good laugh. Maybe would tie a fetus to the front of his car as a hood ornament.

482 Actually she can't. A President can only Pardon for Federal Crimes, not State Crimes.

Come on NGU, you know better than that, there are no longer ANY rules that limit the President!

Food stamp rule changes to hurt small stores

As mentioned in the overnight -

Now more difficult for people to spend my money on their lunch.

A nation weeps.

485 "Probably a mixture of both vindication and fatigue."

Strategic/tactical withdrawal. A shark pool this big, anyone can have an accident arranged for them. By resigning he can criticize the sell out with less personal danger. Live-to-fight-another-day. This is analogous to Kings Mountain. Cowpens hasn't been fought yet.

488 "hurt small stores"

The same small stores that had meth-kits and crack pipes (disguised as flower holders)?

As long as they don't outlaw canned goods or require actual sales this will have little effect. Act like a one time tax with a small maintenance fee that could be ignored by most stores, (dusty cans of past sell-by-date peas, corn, salmon over in the corner).
