Overnight Open Thread (7-4-2016) - 4th of July Edition

Happy 4th of July all.

4thflag23

Quote of the Day

[It] will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

-- letter from John Adams to Abigail Adams about Independence Day

Today is the 40th Anniversary of the Raid on Entebbe

Possibly the most audacious military raid in history. Yet another reason to be grateful on this day.

42 Good fireworks show on the Galveston Seawall.

Just got home, from enjoying the show with a few tens of thousands of, at least for today, very patriotic Americans of all colors, styles, cultures and ages.

An entirely positive celebration of our Independence. With a strong vibe of optimism in the air.

Whether right or not, I'm going to take that optimism, and ride on it for a few days, or as long as I can make it last.

It's a much needed boost after lo, these many weeks of rightful cynicism towards those who would be our masters.

We will succeed, and they will fail.

God Bless America, and God Bless Teh Moron Horde!

Good fireworks show on the Galveston Seawall.

When I was 2 I was at the Galveston display. They had a malfunction and the whole thing went off all at once. Almost sank the barge it was on. According to my parents it was the absolute best, albeit shortest, fireworks display they've ever seen.

And I took the boat out for the first time yesterday, just me, Gingy and Little. We just went a couple of miles out into the bay and back. It was kinda hard with me being the only one that even sorta knows what I'm doing. Highlights:

*Thump*
"What's that?"
*Thump*
"That's the keel hitting the bottom, see that marker out there? That's the channel, I gotta get out to it". (I had wandered into the shallows while figuring out how to get the sails up. Jib was easy, Main works a lot better if you attach the halyard to the actual sail and not leave it on the mast. It didn't help that Gingy kept coming out of the wind onto a beam reach). I had a couple Mr. Wilson moments.

I got some kind of electrical issue, hope it's just a dead battery. I could start the engine but had no power for anything else when I was off the dock power.

There's some small water leak on one of the engine hoses when it's running, it sprays up, a small stream. It just occurred to me that I didn't shutdown the water intake line when I docked. Shit. I hope it doesn't sink. It shouldn't though, the bilge pump works on shore power, and the leak was under pressure, it should be fine just sitting there.

I couldn't quite get the sails set right for a close haul. It worked, and we were going, but other boats of the same size on the same tack passed me. Slowly, but they did. I was doing 3-4 knots and they must have been doing 4-5. Only about 7-8 knots wind speed though.

I backed into the slip and tied up with 0 issues. A couple of guys on their nearby sailboats complimented me on the job and couldn't believe that it was my first time.

Had a lot of fun though. I'm looking forward to doing it again, and to Gingy taking the ASA 101 course so that I'm not all alone out there.

A lot of it tracked certification, which turns out to be another form of bullshit -- you can be certified in 19 kinds of shit and accomplished in none. If you're certified, it's handy to maintain some sort of continuity with your name. So if you're certified in left-handed progressive critical basket-weaving for trans-Hispanics bottoms, you want to maintain that advantage in your government HR department even if you [somehow] get married.....so you need to hyphenate.

They're not vowels. In fact the Greeks made the mistake of thinking they were when they took the alphabet ... and that's how we ended up with one of the greatest advances in writing - independent vowels and truly phonetic writing.

Hebrew is really a syllabic language. You infer the vowels by the organization of the consonants - and that includes aleph, ayin, etc - because Hebrew words are all built on very specific templates.

When all the worst in the world come here and demand to be set apart and sustained in the name of a failed country or belief, it makes me sad.

161 It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

I do believe we have done almost every one of those today. It has been a great, restorative Fourth for me.

Our neighborhood has been sounding like a war zone for close to two hours. Must have had 10 or 15 different groups within a 3/4 mile radius, lighting aerials and any other kind of combustible. Never been quite like this before. There's something in the air.

Not really an optimist yet, but maybe there's some hope to be found...

I have this theory that throughout all of history there is a very clear understanding among almost the entire human population that there is a difference between regular people and the great men. Which is why all the great people of history are such incredible people. Whereas nowadays I can hardly point to a single person who I think... Yes, that man is truly a great person.
It seems to me almost everyone fails to achieve the ideal.
Maybe its just that we've reached a point where the difficulty of achievement is so high that it can only be actualized through collaboration?
I don't know, it doesn't seem that way to me except in the hard sciences, definitely not in any of the social fields like politics, writing or anything of that nature.

Running the numbers based on number polled and 42% Clinton and 32% Trump:

324 for 'Other'

Skipping the math, but based upon the magic of matrices and determinants,

Is 45% card-carrying Democrat a realistic projection for the upcoming election?

I think at least partly to fault is science.
Before hard sciences the most intelligent and creative people would basically pursue statecraft and contemplation of ideas for their own sake.
In the modern world most of those type of people dedicate their lives to the pursuit of scientific research, many of whom think science will provide deterministic, objective answers to all questions. There is point to contemplating the nature of something if in the future the nature of that thing will be exposed by someone else who specializes in that field of scientific research.

Yes, they "recommend" that you go view the item before bidding. But I have found them to be painfully honest when it comes to disclosing known faults. Almost to a comical degree. "Worn floor". No shit, Sherlock. But a photo shows the rubber floor mat in shreds. Porcupines must have been fucking on it.

Waterton Park is a 4-hour road trip for me. So, say, $150 worth of fuel to drive there and back. To have a look at a $500 truck. Not worth the expense. I could easily get $500 out of it by parting it out. The pickup box looks great. Windshield is undamaged. Better just to bid what it's worth to me, as a pig in a poke, and then make the one trip to fetch it if I win the auction. Last two Suburbans I bought from GCSurplus both have been absolute gems.

And I won the bid on the "vintage tools" last week. A Black & Decker "Holgun" 1/4-inch drill, and a "Scrugun" power screwdriver, both 1950's vintage or earlier. In fact the Holgun looks exactly like the 1940's model Holgun that my father used when he worked in the Boeing Aircraft factory in Vancouver, BC, building tail sections for PBY's. Which self-same drill is in my tool drawer right now.

Posted by: BourbonChicken at July 05, 2016 12:55 AM (VdICR)

The whole point of a Constitutional Republic like ours (was) is that not only do you not need any great men in politics but great men would specifically not want to go into politics. If the Constitution was adhered to and the arms of government kept within their various constraints then bad and stupid men couldn't do too much damage from within the government. Further, positions that are so constrained and restricted are not the sort that any great man would be interested in, outside of a few years of "service" after his main productive and creative years were already done.

These are the strengths (and the weaknesses) of our Constitutional Republic and part of the reason why it always had a limited shelf life (though it lasted far longer than anyone had a right to think it would). By putting constraints on the power of government one should expect that the people who will populate that government will tend to be the mediocre and the power-hungry (who are looking to break the constraints and benefit from the awesome money and power that the government has at its disposal ... once the Constitution is breached).

188 It is hard to realize facts and come to conclusions amongst the T.V., internet and gaming folks who "just want to be left alone".

The interesting thing is that they'll never understand that Orwell was right. They've never read Orwell. The only reason I read Orwell was because I was in middle school in 1984.

They've never read Thomas Sowell, because will not be assigned.

They will never read Milton Friedman, because it will never be assigned.

Hayek, Von Mises, Popper, Hoffer?

These will be authors of our future and we must fight to implement their assignments as Freedoms of Speech.

The "elites" and their unelected School Boards must stop. If you don't attend meetings, (something I have never done --to be honest), you are going to watch the Constitution fade, as I have.

I don't have children, but that is no excuse.

I make phone calls to Ohio and National Representatives and Senators almost every week. --Mostly around election time.

I have been remiss on attending local meetings because I'm part of the T.V., Internet, Gaming and Local Sports crowd that finds diversions.

Ignorance is bliss.

He's ineligible. But the worst part is not that, it's that people didn't have the integrity to, at the very least, demand that he prove his eligibility in court (which would not even have been a risk, as the courts would all happily say that he was eligible, no matter what the truth).

Actually, even worse than that was that many people went apeshit, attacking anyone who even mentioned that Barky needed to prove he was actually eligible. At that point it was clear that not even many of those who claimed to support the Constitution really cared about it. It was clear that if Barky got in after that all bets were off. And that's exactly what happened.

The same timidity and fear of even broaching the Constitutional question with barky carried through with the Vichy GOP (and the Judiciary) letting him do any damn thing he wanted. The Rule of Law was reduced to nothing but a sad joke.

The real problem is that the Constitution is built to be enforced by shame or the courts. If a party has no shame and has a lockstep majority in SCOTUS, the rest of the Constitution just folds. If the second amendment said, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free
state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be
infringed and any attempts at infringement should be subject to immediate execution by any citizen, militia, or armed forces of the United States. -- well, then, we would have had much less bullshit over the last 50 years.

The truly great are marginalized by the society the Left has created, which at every turn elevates falsehood over truth, incompetence over competence, and decadence over art. To be great these days is to speak the truth with boldness. There are many great men, but we do not hear them. The defilers have bigger microphones.

Were it me, I'd just replace all of the hoses in the engine compartment, period. Zero-time as many of the maintenance and serviceable items as you can. Including engine zincs and intercooler zincs, most importantly.

The electronics? Fine tooth comb every inch of it. Might not be connections, or a bad switch. Could be chafe on a wire(s) though.

And awesomely done, backing her down to dock. You win and lose all your salty points around the docks, like it or not.

There's a lot of this at play. The truly great are marginalized by the society the Left has created, which at every turn elevates falsehood over truth, incompetence over competence, and decadence over art. To be great these days is to speak the truth with boldness. There are many great men, but we do not hear them. The defilers have bigger microphones.

I don't think there are as many great men as you think, they aren't being outshouted. They aren't there at all. The world we are in now is not theirs anymore.

221 I celebrated Independence Day today by liberating my deep fryer from the tyranny of oxidized oil varnish mess all in and over it. That's what happens when you let shit go.

I almost got some gasoline on it, almost, but the damn stuff is getting too expensive to use for a solvent like I used to do. Hell, I would have had any handy in a can, the non-ethanol kind, of course.

I think I'm going to spring for a deep fryer with the drain on it. After each use, the oil is drained through a filter into a nice storage tank. Makes it easier to clean.

222 Simply the existence of great men makes leftists uncomfortable. I heard a 3-hour conversation between Sargon of Akkad and two former liberals / classic liberals. And they tried to figure out the riddle of what is the mental defect of SJWs. Sargon finally said, maybe they're just shitty people? Bad people like certain things, and they have the sense to know that collusion is the only way they can get ahead in the world. (And so they have more "dog whistles" than anyone else.)

225 The problem isn't the Constitution or whether the government followed it. It's that new states were admitted to the Union without first being free and independent states.

A sports analogy: The NFL (or any of the big leagues) were true leagues at first - a bunch of guys make a team, and a bunch of teams form a league. They agree on rules and a schedule and pick an official to oversee it all. It was like a local bowling league is today.

But then the league grew to the point where the term "league" is an antiquated misnomer. The NFL is a business that awards (actually sells) franchises. The so-called league is in charge of the teams, not the other way around.

So it is with U.S. states. Nevada was never a state in the true sense - not like Pennsylvania or South Carolina or Texas (or, arguably, Utah). And as for being free and independent, there's not 1 out of 50 that qualify as being either.

No solutions here - not even describing the problem very well - just offering a contrast between 18th-century America and 21st-century America.

(Then again, maybe I'm all wet. Thoughts?)

It was beautiful, green, lush (the foliage, not me), and the weather was fine.

The illegal Mexican horde that moved in on day one played miserable music over loudspeakers and sang karioke over a microphone until 3:00 in the morning all three nights. The cops came through, but did nothing. Bastards ruined a perfectly good weekend by forbidding anyone there to sleep.

I'm voting for Trump, if only because he will deport these bastards who come here to take our jobs, ruin our leisure time, and refuse to learn how to behave like an American. And if that makes me xenophobic and racist, then I guess I am.

The sidebar link, "You Owe Them Nothing" is a high-quality affirmation of the shredding of the Rule of Law.

http://tinyurl.com/zxpasp9

-Please read that before you read further.

Ironically, it leads to more freedom; as we are free to disobey the "Elites" and those who would not conform to what we plebes are subjected to.

I'm not talking about immorality and revolt... (as some idiots call for violence and an abhorrent form of "justice".)

I'm talking about a Local Push to get people elected to ground-level positions.

What I completely understand is this final paragraph from Kurt Schhlicter's post:

I abide by the Rule of Law. I will murder no one, as God is my Witness. I will, however, defend the Constitution of These Great United States of America.

I don't think we're at the "Tree of Liberty" position, yet.

I do believe that the bastardization of the Constitution has achieved a level not seen since A. Jackson, T. Roosevelt, W. Wilson, F.D. Roosevelt, R. Nixon; and for some of you, A. Lincoln.

...I tend to agree with "some of you" more often than not. The "War of Northern Aggression" turned out better than its instance Against Our Constitution.

Perhaps I'm too drunk to make an actual point. In fact, I know I am.

I'll simply ask you to try to influence your local neighbors by learning the Constitution and Our Founding Fathers by reading The Federalist Papers.

...and the authors prescribed above.

For those who would say that our country isn't exceptional, I would simply point out history itself.

God Bless these great United States of America.

239 I don't think it's a coincidence that great men along less often as real-time media grew, while at the same time greatness was frequently declared for those who had a talent for performance but not necessarily anything else to recommend them. The greatness inspired by past historical figures required a bit of distance, for the men to be known for their accomplishments and deeds, and not their every minute foible. Less than a century ago, a man running for high office was known primarily for his words reproduced in newspapers and pamphlets. Those words were better weighed and considered by the average man who could be bothered to pay attention than somebody taking in a soundbite on TV.

Consider how long it has been since a President could be judged by something he'd written entirely himself, as per Lincoln with the Gettysburg Address. Today, Lincoln's reedy voice would be a disaster in a candidate and at the time the Address got rather mixed reviews from those in attendance, hearing it from Lincoln's own mouth. The appreciation for the text grew greatly as it was picked up by every newspaper and readers assigned whatever mental voice they chose to the speaker.

250 VERY interesting conversation at a Fourth of July BBQ this evening.

Talking with a mother of a 11-year-old who just finished fourth grade at a public elementary school in [liberal Bay Area school district].

Now, this mother, who is the older sister of a childhood friend of mine, is a big-time lefty. If you're from the Bay Area you might understand, but those of you from normal places can't quite grasp the depth of leftism people are capable of around here. She's one of them -- uber-ultra-liberal, kneejerk loathing of anything even faintly conservative. The worst curse word in the English language is "Reagan." That type of person.

Why is this relevant? Because this was the conversation:

Me: [small talk about school and childhood memories.]

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Yeah, but that's nothing compared to what kids learn these days."

Me: "Really, What do you mean?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Well, for example. last semester, my kid brought home his assignment about the history of science, and I caught a glimpse of it, and literally every scientist mentioned was African-American. I mean, that's fine in theory, I get the point, but every single one?"

Me: "Like, Einstein and Newton and so forth -- not mentioned?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "No -- just marginal people I had never heard of. I asked him and he thought this actually was the history of science. He straight-up told me that white people had not contributed anything to science, because that's what he was being taught. Really, I understand why they might want to do this, it's good for self-esteem for some of the class, but we're using our kids as guinea pigs. At some point they should be taught the truth."

Me: "So what did you do?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Well, I went to his teacher, and basically confronted her about the curriculum, and do you know what she said?"

Me: "What?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: " She said, 'He'll learn eventually.' And I said to her, 'Learn what?' And she said, squinting her eyes, 'He'll learn not to let his parents see the workbook..' "

Me: "Whoa."

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Can you believe it? I mean, really, I think there should be reparations, I'm all for that, but we shouldn't be taking it out on our children. They don't know what's real and what's not. I'm just so frustrated."

Me: "Ever thought about private school?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Oh, no, never! They should be banned. That's elitist."

Me: "So, you left him in the same school?"

Liberal mom of fourth-grader: "Yeah, of course."

---

So, she had her eyes opened about the indoctrination in public schools, AND she's angry that SJWs are using the nation's kids as educational guinea pigs to erase history, and EVEN SO, her leftism compels her to leave her kids in school at the mercy of the communists in charge.

It's sheer child abuse to leave your child in a situation where you know they are being hurt (intellectually). I didn't reveal my feelings to her (I'm too polite for that), but I held her partly responsible for the ruination of her son's brain. She should have pulled him out of school immediately, because next year he will learn his lesson not to show her the workbook, where the indoctrination will increase even more exponentially -- all the way through college.

Take this situation and multiply it by 10 million and you have contemporary America in a nutshell.

Oh, it gets better.

My son brought home straight F's with the exception of one D for his final grades in 4th grade. It was inevitable once we discovered that the teacher never asked the kids to turn in homework. We were told it was up to the kids to do this on their own. It was a bridge to far to expect the only adult in the room to enforce the rule.

When I called the District to ask if my son was going to repeat 4th grade, since his grades indicated that he has clearly failed, I was told that if that were going to happen, it would have been brought to my attention by February, so of course he would not be held back.

What the actual fuck?

So, not only will the teachers be responsible for acting like adults and actually teach the kids, but when they fail horribly, the kids will just be passed up the pipe to the next round of failures.

I shall be homeschooling the boy this year, and he will be the better for it, even if I have to give up my current, fabulous job to pull it off.

Public schools are NOT about children any more--they are entirely about imbeciles pulling big paychecks from the public trough to warehouse kids until they can kick them out at 16. I will be damned if I pay another dime to support public school. Now I just have to figure out how to do that and not go to jail.

Maybe I'll keep it out next to the 1939 Royal typewriter and start a 'retro-but-still-useful' section of my office. (The Royal isn't for display. I use it often. Hi Tim, I don't sense it by sound but there is a 'feel' when I hit the wrong key. But I do like the sound and slight effort to work the keys. Makes me think I'm accomplishing something. Heck, I even like the aroma of the ink on the ribbon. The whole process is therapeutic. And it's relaxed since I don't have to produce clean, error free copy on it. It's my favorite first draft tool. (I'm not a touch typist anyway so I'm always looking at the keyboard.) and the size and spacing of the keys and angle of the keys is more comfortable for my big ol' hands. Plus it's reassuring that something older than me is still functional. :-)

The Left won't leave it at that. Consider the recently-decided case of the Christian pharmacist. He declined to dispense abortifacients as a matter of conscience. He offered to refer the customer to one of 30 other pharmacies within a 5-mile radius of his store. The court found this to be an illegal and unconstitutional violation of the customer's rights.

So a Christian pharmacist who holds a conscientious objection to abetting abortion must choose between his conscience and his livelihood.

At what point are Christians justified in taking arms against their oppressors?

I'm thinking we're probably there now.
