There's Something You Don't See Everyday [Y-not]

In case you missed it, West Virginia got hammered by flooding last week. 26 people are now confirmed dead:

A 1,000-year flood
The high terrain along rivers in southeastern West Virginia are exacerbating the flooding, meteorologists said.
Weather radar estimates show that more than 10 inches of rain have fallen in portions of Greenbrier County. There is a 1 in 1,000 chance of this type of rainfall happening in any given year, according to the National Weather Service.
In Kanawha County, which includes the capital of Charleston, the Elkview River crested at 33.37 feet Friday morning, meteorologists said. The river rose more than 27 feet from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning, the highest crest since record-keeping began more than 125 years ago, according to the National Weather Service.

13 Y-not, you can not trust the flood insurance government people about flood risk. They went bankrupt over all the flooding in New Orleans right after Florida. So what happened? All of a sudden a lot of the country got reclassified to flood risk from not a risk, which guess what? It made them have to get flood insurance to replenish the coffers. My MIL's house all of a sudden is now in a flood zone.

Wondered the same thing, but thought maybe it's that flooding in a plain just gradually spreads the water out over a large area, but flooding in a gorge (high natural barriers on either side of the water source) gives you rapidly moving water which is more destructive!

15 You know why they have those shear cliffs in Hawaii? Bc they break off and fall in the ocean. Once, probably more than once, half of one of the islands broke off and tumbled into the ocean and they are still finding debris 2 miles away. Caused a YUGE tsunami.

So, how do they know it wont happen again? I dont think it just cracks a little and there are warning signs. It just breaks off in one fell swoop. Whoosh! All theose million dollar homes are gone!

Sounds like the flooding Colorado had (in a smaller way) a couple of years ago. *Every* canyon river from the WY border to Denver (over 60 miles and about half-a-dozen rivers) all flooded at the same time because of way more rain than usual. My parents have been in Colorado over 30 years and there'd never been anything close.

Yes, I admit I felt rich when we moved here. This house was the bees knees when it was built in the mid 60's, and coming from a very diverse urban area with tiny lots, I thought we could farm our yard.

I have always maintained since I bought my house here in SC that if I had to move back to NY I would sell my lawn tractor and buy a snow blower and plow.

But the way things have changed since I left Saratoga Springs the odds of me moving back to NY are now 10E-99.

58 Mudslides in the Appalachians are not that uncommon. When there is enough rain to saturate the soil it will move. I witnessed it firsthand in Madison Co. Va in 1995, where the flood literally changed the landscape.

Or this gem from from 1969:

....Camille's heaviest downpour. Nelson County, Virginia, received the brunt of the storm with at least twenty-seven inches of rainfall. So much rain fell in such a short time in Nelson County that, according to the National Weather Service at the time, it was "the probable maximum rainfall which meteorologists compute to be theoretically possible."

I have a lot of family that moved to the mid-states. Southern NC, and the Branson area.

They are NEVER moving back. Enjoying 4 seasons, but winters are short and mild comparatively.

They facebook pictures of snow now, as if it is some wonderous miracle.

Although, Ice driving seems to be more common for them, and that don't sound like a lot of fun, especially downhill.

66 I have numerous friends in WV. The media has been rather "lax" with reporting from WV, cause, it's WV I guess.

The devastation from these floods is incredible. Richwood, just west of Greenbriar County in Nicholas county, looks like something you see in Indonesia with the monsoons.

Also, the Greenbriar resort was scheduled to host a PGA tournament in the next couple of weeks. Much of the course is under a foot or two of water.

Many of these residents do not have flood insurance. Not because they're too poor or too lazy or welfare rednecks. But because their neighborhood had NEVER flooded. And those people have lost everything.

One child died as his mother was trying to ford the flooded creek, which was washing her house away. She had a child in each hand, lost her grip on the little boy, he was swept away and found dead a few hours later.

Rather than post links here, suggest the horde simply google or search engine Richwood, WV floods, or Kanawha WV floods. And then consider donating to the Red Cross or another relief organization that will help these people.

68 The thing, too, about that terrain is you can get what we called 'a hollow-washer' triggered by a storm miles away. It'll be dry where you are, but storming back up in the gills, and the next thing you know, there's a wall of water coming your way.

Fact is, they've declared most of the bodies under that mudslide as to be "unrecoverable", and they'll get around to building some kind of (supposedly) suitable memorial thereon.

Not sure how much that'll help the families affected thereby, but that's the most recent news I'd heard of the event, anyway.

I think the explanation is complex: ie. there are several factors:
- they idealize minorities as some sort of pre-fall Adam and Eve, docile and innocent. They need an innocent Christ figure, and as secularists, they project that on to minorities.

- they do subconsciously look down on minorities, and feel guilty over that fact, and so in an act of self-flagellation, they inflict unlimited immigration on themselves and others, to atone for their thought crime, and "prove" to themselves they are not really racist.

- they feel inferior to their white peers. It boosts their ego to rationalize their envy as denouncing them for some imaginaty crime, in actuality the racism that they themselves subconsciouly feel.

- due to their subconcious racism, it boosts their ego to surround themselves with those they see as inferior.

-the Avatar complex. It boosts their ego to imagine themselves as white knights defending the downtrodden.

Their deep psychological need to believe these things outweighs whether they are true, as well as all other ethical considerations (such as the Rotherham and Cologne cases).

I was just musing the other day: remember when Darfur was a thing? How there was a terrible slaughter of innocents in Darfur which was being ignored by George W. Bu$hitler and DiKKK Cheney? Because those two were preoccupied with looting Iraq's oil wealth for themselves? And how it was imperative to get them out of office and replace them with someone who would take Darfur seriously?

Suddenly Darfur fell off the radar. And there hasn't been a peep about Darfur ever since. This inflection point occurred right about January 20th, 2009. I'm still investigating to see what could have happened on or around that date to cause this effect.

244 The experts always talk about 100 year floods and 1000 year floods but seem to not talk about how they determine these things, much less factor in how the watershed has changed (e.g. reshaping the landscape along with building). The flooding in West Virginia is bad, but with only 125 to 150 years of data, how can they say it is a 1000 year flood? Reminds me of the same that was said about the floods along the Mississippi River years ago.

Quite likely Boris Johnson. He is a sitting MP, and a member of the Conservative Party, which is the governing party, since it holds a majority. And he is a prominent "Leave" supporter, so would be the best candidate. Farage and, I think Hannan, too, are UKIP party, and thus would not be in the running.
