''It's clear that 'letting your conscience be your guide' was good advice for Pinocchio then, and it's good advice today", he declared. He then proceeded to continue shooting darts at a poster of Donald Trump hanging from the wall of the Speakers ornate office.

Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) has proposed compromise legislation to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists. She is working with Sen. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), as well as Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

The proposal would prohibit the sale of guns to terror suspects whose names appear on either the federal no-fly list or the so-called selectee list, which requires them to under go additional screening at airports.

This is in addition to the gun conrol amendments being voted on Monday.

Oakland's acting police chief Paul Figueroa stepped down Friday, becoming the third head of the Oakland Police Department to abruptly leave the top post in nine days.

In a move in which Mayor Libby Schaaf indicated she had lost faith in police leaders to run the department, she disclosed that she would not appoint another interim or acting chief to the top post. Instead, the department will have no chief, and for the time being command staff will report to a City Administrator.

First up is whiskey chip, made with a whiskey-infused sweet cream ice cream base and milk chocolate chips. Later this summer, look for a mojito-flavored ice cream to make an appearance. Possible future flavors currently being tested by the ice creamery include Irish coffee, margarita, stout beer and Champagne.

75 A mohel is a Jewish man who performs the ritual of brit milah on a baby boy eight days after he is born. (Unless the baby is not healthy enough to undergo the ritual, in which case it is postponed.) "Brit milah" means "covenant of circumcision" and hence "mohel" means "circumciser." Technically the baby's father is commanded to perform the circumcision, but since most dads are uncomfortable with this role and/or don't have the training to perform it safely, the mohel is designated as the father's surrogate.

79 So in the more tragic Baltimore news...

A 14 year old boy steals a Jeep. When an Officer spots the vehicle going the opposite way from the Officer on the street, the Officer blips her lights, but does not turn around and pursue.

14 Year Old guns it, passes through a school crossing, killing a 9 year old girl, and injuring two more students. Keeps on going at a high rate of speed till later he strikes parked cars and a tree, disabling the stolen jeep.

14 Year Old bails out and disappears. Police apprehend said yute the next day, and arrest him.

During an interview with the dead girls father, he says he doesn't have angry feelings toward the 14 year old, as the 14 year old didn't know that what he was doing was wrong.

In what city does a 14 year old NOT know that theft of an automobile, or striking and killing a person is wrong?

Meanwhile, the food chain continues:

A 5-year-old boy is recovering in a Denver hospital after being attacked by a mountain lion, officials said.

The attack happened Friday night about 10 miles northwest of Aspen, Colorado, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office. A man called 911 dispatchers to report that his son had been attacked by a mountain lion and he was driving to the Aspen Valley Hospital, police said in a statement.

The boy's mother told police that the boy was playing outside with his older brother when she heard screams. The mother ran out and "physically removed her son from the mountain lion," according to the statement.

91 "14 year old didn't know right from wrong, when police officer hit the red lights it scared him because he didn't know what to expect and his foot happened to stomp on the gas."

Yeh...there's two ways to look at the 'Didn't know" statement.

1. A grown adult really believes that the kid has learned how to boost modern automobiles by age 14, but that the kid doesn't know that theft is morally wrong.

2. There actually is a sub-culture in America where by age 14, a child has not been taught that theft is morally wrong.

Either position is pretty f'n scary to the average law abiding citizen.

So, post Orlando, if I wanted to skew the results I'd load the poll numbers with left leaning republicans with terrorism as not one of their hot button issues.

See how easy that would be?

110 "2. There actually is a sub-culture in America where by age 14, a child has not been taught that theft is morally wrong."

There was a case recently wherein a young man was busily engaged in residential burglary and ended up dead after confronting an armed homeowner in the dark.

His family issued the by now familiar ritual recitations ("turning his life around", et cetera). But one of the family had an opinion that was frankly stunning to hear even in these jaded times.

Quoted roughly from memory, her question was, defending the dearly departed's choice of vocations, "How's he expected to have clothes to wear to school?" (That is, without breaking into other people's homes and stealing their stuff, then fencing it to buy said clothes.)

Her tone of voice and phrasing made it clear that she regarded this as being a perfectly valid and justifiable life choice, and she was pretty indignant about it being viewed otherwise.

111 It's not 2012. If you think technology sits idly by while society marches on, you're just not paying attention.

They'll skew the polls in the beginning, only gradually aligning them with reality. It's the final month when voters finally decide for good.

Both final months for both McCain and Romney were pathetic. Both were within spitting distance of winning.

No, it's worse than 2012, because at least in 2012, the establishment elders and the donor class were solidly behind the nominee, as poor a choice as that nominee was. Now they're at loggerheads with the nominee, and he with them.

Trump is running what amounts to a third-party amateur candidacy with the "Republican" label hastily slapped on the side.

148 Caught up with things by reading Ace's take on Megan McArdle's article and nationalism vs globalism.

I'm convinced that PRK procedure not only fixed Ace's eyes, but restored him to the Ace I knew in the heady days of Plame. Clear thinking - on point.

By distilling the essence of what the Trump movement is - what most people don't realize yet - is favoring the U.S. over other countries. Nationalism pure and simple.

People like Trump see the world in that light. What they have trouble with is realizing that other Americans don't. Other people do believe that the leaders of the United States should, first and foremost, look out for the well being of United States citizens, but they don't acknowledge it for fear of being call racists or fascists.

This is where we need a strong group of writers and pundits who have the skill to articulate how this form of tribalism isn't evil. This election, between nationalism and globalism, can be the single most defining event in the history of the country.
