Feeling overwhelmed? Maybe it's time to take a break for a Chocolate Festival in New Zealand in less than a month, from July 11 - 17. This particular chocolate festival was made possible by romantic city planning.

Baldwin Street, Dunedin, New Zealand

When British surveyor Charles Kettle drew up road plans for Dunedin during the mid-19th century, he modeled the design on the elegant grids of Edinburgh's New Town. Dunedin's erratic topography, however, was less than ideal for the street system that had worked so well in Scotland. Nonetheless, city planners forged ahead and ended up with Baldwin Street, whose gradient has earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The "World's Steepest Street" is now the site of the annual Jaffa Race. Jaffas are candy-coated balls of orange-chocolate. For race day, they are painstakingly numbered, and people can bet on an individual candy for a dollar. Proceeds go to charity. Three races took place last year, with red, yellow and blue Jaffas.

While your are in scenic seaside Dunedin, you might stop by the university to see the Beveryly Clock. "Running since 1864, this clock has yet to be wound, possibly the longest running science experiment known." It runs on changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure. It could serve as a model for the future, when some of our friends on the left dream of a world without electrical power.

But the dreams of the left are affecting Dunedin today, too. I ran across a blog concerning construction of a stadium in Dunedin. I am happy to report that there appeared to have been some push-back against city officials who blamed flooding on "climate change". Could the "clilmate change" narrative really protect them from liability for failure to properly maintain storm drain systems, etc? I also liked the graphic below from the Jaffa races. Heh.

Ready to pack?

Historical Weapon Science

It's back to ancient Scotland from New Zealand fir the following news item. It is possible that a distant ancestor of a Dunedin city planner was involved in fighting between the Romans and the Scottish barbarians. Roman troops apparently used whistling bullets (shot from slings) as "terror weapons".

Weighing about 1 ounce (30 grams), each of the bullets had been drilled with a 0.2-inch (5 millimeters) hole that the researchers think was designed to give the soaring bullets a sharp buzzing or whistling noise in flight.

The bullets were found recently at Burnswark Hill in southwestern Scotland, where a massive Roman attack against native defenders in a hilltop fort took place in the second century A.D.

Sound of the whistling bullet here.

The candy balls in the Jaffa races are friendlier. Of course, bullets, even from slings, are generally not intended as missiles of welcome, like a bunch of bouncing chocolate balls.

Have a great weekend. Eat some chocolate, maybe.

For me, as an area weapon, I found it fine.
I did not achieve the pin-point accuracy of the Balearic slingers

I did find that one and two ounce fishing weights and old spark-plugs flew well if thrown in a "spiral", and that irregular rocks both whirred like manic quail going down range, and at times appeared to do 30 degree trajectory changes

38 Goooood Morning, Peoples' Republic of Spades!

Vlad #22: So was the Orlando terrorist gay or have the reports been debunked, or, more likely, have they just been stuffed down the memory hole because, inconvienent?

Perhaps not so much "gay" as whatcha might call polymorphously perverse. IIRC, the 9/11 terrorists were drinking and partying before the event.

Designated Terrorists get a pass on Islamic taboos, it seems. So, Orlando boy could have just been ghey-ing around, among other indulgences, because he could. (Not to say he wasn't gay-curious in the first place, of course.)

cthulhu touched on something like this. Never heard of "a 'Faust'" before, or this kind of deal, but it rings likely:

cthulhu #618 on the ONT http://bit.ly/1V4Zv0B:

I'm coming to the belief that they gave him a "Faust". Sign up with jihadists and you get three years of joy -- you get a wife we provide you, you can sire a son, you get a hajj, you get financial support....and three years from now you do a "martyrdom operation" that forgives you from any depravities you incur in the meantime.

He knew he was marked in 2013. He knew martyrdom was near in April 2016 when he signed his house over to family.

46 Regarding that hydraulic press vs. ball bearing video.

About 12 years ago some maintenance guys I worked with accidentally loaded mismatched punch and die into the couple ton press I was operating. The result was a true flashbang experience. I remember seeing a white smoky flash. Next thing I know I was 20 feet away staggering towards the office. No real harm done but I have a scar on my chest about 3 inches above my heart where a fragment tore through my shirt and laid me open. Could have been so much worse. Fun times.

Oh for God's SAKES.

I start at the house in my PJs listlessly job-hunting but mostly hitting F5 at Ace of Spades and reading articles off Drudge etc.

Realize I'll have to get out of the house if I'm going to get anything done, go to Starbucks and spend $4.65 on stupid coffee and croissant that I don't really want.

Find job I don't really want but start applying for it anyway, compose detailed cover letter, and monitor dims -- ooh, time to plug in -- except that I FORGOT MY POWER CORD.

Now I'm back home in the SAME DAMN SPOT where I was when I got off my butt three hours ago, only this time with a glass of wine instead of coffee.

That's what I should have done at 10:00 this morning. I"ll remember it going forward.

P.S., yes, my cover letter is saved.

Sounds like it blew an internal fuse or circuit breaker. You have a manual for it? Or if you have a spare battery, try that. They may have put the breaker in the battery case. I believe lithium batteries are prone to explode if subjected to prolonged excess over-current.

*hopes Eris is still around*

One of my favorite stories is Heinrich Boell's "Es wird etwas geschehen" (Something will happen).

It's a satire of the economic miracle culture of Germany in the 50s. It opens with "I am by nature more inclined to idleness and contemplation than to work, but occasionally persistent financial difficulties force me to accept a so-called position".

So he gets a job in Wunsiedel's factory and one thing leads to another and his attitude basically gives Wunsiedel a fatal heart attack.

At the funeral it turns out that he has a very good sad face and looks good in black and he becomes a professional mourner.

114 So, this week I completed the round robin of doctor visits. GP, cardiologist, phlebotomist, hematologist, and the ear doctor.

My blood numbers, while kind of wonky, are very much improved. As near to normal now as they will ever be. Blood pressure: Good. Kidneys: Suck. Heart: surprisingly good. Blood sugar: Sucks.

When I went through that bout of congestive heart failure, the cardiologist assured me that once you lose cardiac function, it's gone for good. It does not come back.In the six months between echocardiograms, I've recovered half the cardiac function I lost.

I'm of the opinion that I didn't actually lose as much cardiac function as the first tests suggested. I think the leukemia, the chemo, and the numerous blood transfusions contributed in stressing my heart, and skewing the results.

Now that that's all behind me, (for now), my heart is better able to function closer to normal.

Or I could be completely wrong....the cardiologist said interpreting the results of echo cardiograms can be kind of subjective, and since the radioactive isotope scan they did showed there was some previous damage, they took that into account.

No carbs, mostly, other than whole grain stuff, which doesn't spike your blood sugar the way processed stuff does. I limit the amount of potassium I consume. Ditto for phosphorus, (which means limiting dairy...which means very little cheese, or butter...grrrrr). I watch my BP, and blood glucose, and I'm trying to keep my weight in check....but since I can't eat carbs, or most fruits and vegetables, I'm on the bacon and eggs diet.
I cheat on the dairy a bit, thanks to phosphorus binders...but that's not an envelope I really want to push the limits on. I kind of like my sucky kidneys.

Anything rich in calcium is unfortunately also rich in phosphorus.

For you healthy morons out there....phosphorus 'looks like' calcium to your body, so it's readily absorbed into your blood. It's not readily used as calcium though, and so tends to build up, until it begins contributing to coronary artery disease. Your kidneys usually scrub your blood of excess phosphorus.
Since mine are damaged, I avoid most dietary phosphorus, and take a 'binder' three times a day, which is keeping my phosphorus count on the low side of normal.

Easy Peasy...but I do miss cheese, and butter. And canned salmon. Sardines. Tuna.
