Overnight Open Thread 6/17/16 (tmi3rd)

Good evening, Morons and Moronettes. I'm tmi3rd, and I'm filling in for CDR M at the last minute, as real life intervened. For those of you who aren't familiar with me, I usually run the AoSHQ Weather Desk, and put stuff up when we have landfalling hurricanes or major severe weather outbreaks.

I also do the occasional fill-in on the ONT, and CDR M is pretty sure he'll be back in the pocket for tomorrow night.

So let's try to have some fun...

Let me get some stuff from my end out of the way first- at this point, guys, I think we're more or less up a creek, politically. I could be wrong, but judging from my Twitter morning, I don't see the right uniting around anything, and I tried to ignore polls in 2008 and 2012 at my own peril.

It's frustrating as hell because, particularly at the state level, things were (and hopefully are) improving. There's no doubt that at the federal level, the scene has been overrun with charlatans, and under the circumstances, we're looking at a minimum of four (and really more likely eight) years of what we just endured with Obama. Probably worse, frankly, but we'll have to see.

On the personal level, I've had to endure "polite" conversations where lefties feel more and more like they can drop the veil about their big-game intentions. On the other hand, my nominal political allies rage at me for AGREEING WITH THEM. For clarity- for AGREEING WITH MY ALLIES.

And just for clarity- some of my more impressive dustups with people have centered around them thinking that I have some sort of pull as a blogger.

Guys, I'm a med student. I put up, what, four, maybe five, posts IN A YEAR? C'mon.

I'm not going to give you the "can't we all just get along" bullshit, because that answer appears to be a flat NO at this point. The Never Trumpers keep coming up with what they hope will dethrone Trump, the Never Hillary people are praying that Hillary will find a new way to shoot herself in the foot, and each group has compelling arguments as to why they believe what they do. Frankly, I agree with both sides. I just don't think the two sides can find a way to bury the hostaet in time for the election. As such, in practice, we now have two pieces of one party. I just hope Democrats don't win the House, but I'm not optimistic.

In the meantime, though, if you've got a "protected class" friend, you need to take them shooting.

Take them shooting, engage them in conversation, and let them know your reasons why you do what you do. You'll run into situations where you can't talk them out of positions they didn't arrive at on their own, and you're not always going to be successful. But if you're serious about undoing the damage done so that our kids have any chance at all, it starts at the personal level.

I've heard plenty of doom and gloom today. I don't have time for that. I'm trying to find workable solutions that protect my family. Hence, my stance in the short term: win the one-on-ones so that the larger game can be won.

Okay, thanks for letting me get that out there. Now let's have some fun...

How's the weather out there?

It's important to be able to get a weather forecast that's reasonably accurate, and written in plain English. Check this one out. No agenda. No politics. Just weather.

Anyone like waterslides?

This is Verruckt (German translation, and it's missing the umlaut over the U, is "crazy"), and it's a cozy 168 feet up on the first drop. It's at Schlitterbahn in Kansas City.

Gonna have to try that sometime.

Or how about the Skycoaster in Kissimmee, FL? I've done this one.

The view really is lovely that far up, by the way...

I sounded like this (0:35 in) on the way down, by the way...

Tonight's musical selection...

As I mentioned, I'm a med student, and I typically study to trance, deep house, and related stuff. I hadn't heard of M83 until flipping through channels on the satellite radio on the road recently. I totally dig this tune, especially with the very impressive guitar solo at the end.

Tonight's cartoon selection...

Looney Toons - Ballot Box Bunny by JomJul

Seemed appropriate.

Oh, what the hell, one last musical selection...

White Nights has been playing a lot lately on some of the movie channels, and it seems oddly appropriate these days. This was one of the non-Lionel Ritchie tunes that I totally dug...

Okay, guys, that should do it... if you need to get a hold of me, come find me on Twitter. I've got to get up in the morning, so I'm off to bed, but when it comes to current events, have faith. Whatever's coming is probably going to be tough, but do what you've got to do to maintain your sanity. I think most of us are terribly alarmed at what seems to be coming.

Thanks for reading, and hang in there.

2 Oppressed Academics vs. the American Chimera: A Progressive Parable

The pre-determined truth of the academic Left is that Western Civilization is evil, and thus "Whiteness, Patriarchy, and Capitalism". The goal of the academic Left is not to seek out the truth, but to invent justifications for the pre-determined narrative. How hard is it to come up with newer and more insane justifications? So hard that it requires four academics across fourteen institutions... to come up with a parable.

Have only ever done one water-slide. Oddly enough, in Dubai (though the weather there is very often perfect for such things - that is, insanely hot and humid). "Wild Wadi"

One section was funny. You entered a dark tunnel/covered portion (this was near the apex of the slide, so, view) ...... then suddenly you plunged at about 70 degrees, in the pitch black, for a short while. I loved it. 69 I don't ignore the polls, but when you have nearly 30% undecided/other in many polls, which wasn't the case the last time an independent had a significant part of the vote (1980), and there is ZERO social consequence for picking Hillary, I'm not exactly throwing my hands in the air and freaking out that Trump is doomed.

There's a difference between a difficult but possible win and the current view that Hillary will win decisively. The state level polling is not improving in her favor. The divergence from the nationals is interesting and will also present a different picture if it holds up. But the election is months away and as ever, we need to wait for more data and not give the election away five months early if Hillary really is that bad (she is.)

Hooked up hoses and a regulator, and there wasn't enough pressure in the tank to get past the regulator. Good thing I had had the foresight to refill the grill's own cylinder the day before last; I was able to overcook my steak, anyway.

So I will just take the bungs and valves out of the tank, for the scrap brass, and haul it to the dump, which accepts such things. And I made a nice haul of structural steel there today, too. Channel iron, angle iron, square tube, and flat bar, all in decently long lengths. Steel is always useful.

175 The only time I was on a water slider was due to unexpected circumstances.

At a water park with two of my nephews and at the time they were about 5 & 7 years old. We just get settled in and the 5 year old takes off like a shot for the tallest water slide. I shout at the 7 year old to stop his brother. I'm afraid the kid will fall. Too late, the younger kid has reached the ladder. Yes, ladder. No stairs with landings and rails, just 60 feet practically straight up.

I reach the ladder and start up while the 7 year old stares after me. He's afraid of heights and won't climb. Now natural heights don't bother me much but manmade ones sure do and here I am chasing this kid up a 60 foot ladder. He reaches the top and before I can grab him he disappears! Oh crap! He's gone! I peek over the end of the ladder and he's sliding down the slide accelerating to mach 3.5 before skipping across the pool like a flat rock on a pond.

So I'm at the top of this skinny ladder with what seems like 80 mile per hour wind gusts and the only way out is down. Well, I survived my plummet to the water below with out losing any important body pieces. However, once I made it to the edge of the pool, I look up to see the 5 year old halfway up the ladder again.

After he stopped skipping we packed up and left.

I would say 'no'. It is unlikely to accrue or lose any significant value beyond the purchase price. In the context of capital preservation, it would not be a bad investment. Like most tangible items, it will always have some value.

Boy George was very condescending and the audience was hostile. This glitzy queening around appears to have happened when he came to Ameica.

259 NDH, actually I've checked out some of Milo's earlier clips, and he was much more subdued when he was just starting out. Of course, he worked for the Catholic Herald then (really!). There's a clip of him debating Boy George about Gay marriage and Milo was serious and earnest, saying he would not be gay if he had a choice. Boy George was very condescending and the audience was hostile. This glitzy queening around appears to have happened when he came to Ameica.

As I have mentioned, the money that sent my sister and I to college came from my dad building five houses -- moving into each before it was finished. Being in the 70s, they all had wall-to-wall carpeting -- and that was one of the few bits of construction that we always outsourced. I'd seen it done enough times to know what to do....but I am just incredibly sore now.

I won't regale it here but what the LIV is longing for is the illusion that their stupidly cast vote is a noble act, that is also like w inning lottery ticket.

IOW they want to look like enzyte bob coming from that booth....

The left punditry colluded to present a unified front that voting for Ogabe was like meeting Jesus Christ only better b/c this Mocha Jesus is cool like Denzel...

LIV was gonna be forgiven his sin of being white or not gay or whatever and left the booth smiling.....

ask Ezra Klein about it...they snowed America into thinking a communist who couldn't run an ice cream stand was the best thing since Abe Lincoln.

The right punditry refuses to see that for the right LIV Trump is ~85% Obama....

He needs that unity, won't get it and we're fucked.

348 Insomniac, I'm sick of the whole thing with women too.

It all feels like a giant mindfuck frankly at this point. "Oh you want a woman? Get to the point you don't need one."

I also used to get the line from parents and loved ones, "be friends first."

Okay. So I tried being friends first with women. They didn't want to be friends with me and would literally run away and ignore my existence once they found out I wanted to date them.

The truth is, women want to be with men who will spoil them. And especially in SoCal, that means rich men. What's especially galling is how willing they're willing to overlook ANYTHING as long as the man is wealthy and apparently successful.

I know that's not all women, and I know women get their hearts broken too, but I'm just sick of it all. I'm also sick of all the double standards feminism has brought to the table, so now it's illegal to be interested in a woman if you're not an "alpha." (Again, a wealthy male.)

Sigh. Sick of it all.

And having said all that, I *do* appreciate all the empathy and support I get from everyone here, including the Hordettes. I really do. :-)

I'm not George Clooney. And I don't expect my date to be freakin' Mila Kunis. She can have some weight, she doesn't have to be model-perfect.

But again, SoCal women don't seem to have to follow those rules. Feminism tells them they're all entitled to George Clooney, and what's worse, it's perfectly okay to be cruel and vindictive to men who aren't.

Again, one more reason I want to get the f&$% out of SoCal. Not that women elsewhere don't also have issues, but something just tells me they're considerably less vapid elsewhere. Maybe I'm crazy.

One of the burdens of owning a house is that you have a never-ending stream of projects demanding to be done right now or they'll get worse. For example, while I've been dealing with the buckled flooring under the carpet in the aftermath of a flood, I have a passionflower vine that has probably overgrown a bunch of orchids outside and will happily kill them if I don't prune it. I have a collection of carnivorous plants that are probably drying out and need distilled/deionized water. And I need to take certain steps to improve network security -- oh, and finalize all the chaos from the network printing issue.

Rather than pre-planning and executing projects, it's more like spinning plates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhoos1oY404

As an investment, a newly-built AR-15 type rifle probably ranks with stuffing a roll of bills under the mattress. Except maybe less liquid.

If you want an investment-grade firearm, look to something classic that is not being made anymore, and, if it's a milsurp type, one that does not yet remain in huge numbers in some warehouse, waiting to be dumped on the market to depress prices.

I'm pretty sure there will not be a single day when this house is truly shipshape, and not needing something fairly urgently.

414 QDP.....if you want to break that curse in Southern CA.... there are literally hundreds of affordable boats in Craigslist, suitable to liveabord, and in fact, many are in transferrable, liveboard slips.

Anything 30 ft. or larger will have most of the amenities, less a washer/dryer. Those of 40 ft. and above, tend towards a full, 2 bdr. 2 bath condo on the water. Finally, above 45 ft, and that washer/dryer becomes a real possibility.

Find one that suits you in your price range, and voila. All of a sudden, women want to come see you on the weekends.

Maybe not for all the right reasons, but for what it's worth, it's an option.

Even w/o the women, it beats the hell out of paying overhyped CA rents, crowded apartment complexes, etc.

Don't just rule it out. Read the ads, go look at some boats. You just might find it to be an option.

I'd be happy to consult, from afar.

442 QDP.... avoid the houseboats. They appear nice, but most are just bunkhouses, set up for maximum number of family for weekend/holidays.

They suck to live aboard though.

Go with a good trawler type motoryacht, or an over-30 ft. sailboat.

Run your search for Bayliner 32xx Motoryachts, and watch how many pop-up. Queen size master berth under the main cabin, queen size vee berth forward. Full galley, one bathroom. Plenty of elbow room.

Size up, is the 38xx Bayliner. Even has a bathtub.

Now, Bayliner is a cheaper motoryacht, not to be compared to Hatteras, Grand Banks, etc. But, it's a good starter boat, especially for the money.

Sailboats? Too many to mention. Start your search at 32ft., and go up. Find samples you like, email me the full URL of the ad. I'll reply with my jaundiced opinions.

Even though motoryachts and sailboats don't have the "square footage" of a houseboat, they're both more liveable and far more seaworthy, withal.

Fair winds & following seas to you!

Coat a Hillary voter in honey, and drag them slowly over the mound, staking them out at least a mile from your property.

It'll be the first and only time the Hitlery voter will be "sweet", and might just fool the fire ants long enough to get the job done, too.

Then burn the ground where the mound was, salt the earth there and pave it over and paint it green.

At least, that's what I wish I could do to the damn things.

In the meanwhile though, I hit 'em a double whammy of Spectracide and Amdro. Something for every species there.

And put the Amdro in a broadcast spreader, and apply to your entire lawn. Can't let 'em move over fifteen feet and just start over, y'know.

Conversely, watch Caddyshack, take notes, and apply gopher removal methods to the ants, as indicated.

514 QDP. You'll notice in that ad, the price of the boat isn't much more than an average new car, and of course, could be negotiated to a lower figure.

Then, figure on $500/$700 slip fee, including liveaboard premium.

Different CA ports have various permitting requirements for liveaboard. Do your homework. Each marina's harbormaster will be a local expert in their bailiwick, and do ask them. Some will be more helpful than others.

So, walk the docks, meet some liveaboards, and ask them, too.

You'll like the life you find there, I've no doubt.

515 Run your search for Bayliner 32xx Motoryachts, and watch how many pop-up.

Where I grew up, in Vancouver, B.C., thirty-two foot boats were somewhat disliked because their size did not play well with the typical swells found in Georgia Strait. Elsewhere, that might not be a problem.

530 AOP. Few months back, there was a Sapphire listing in the Seattle CL ads.

Didn't know about the 32s being no bueno up there, but it stands to reason. Most folks don't realize that in most river/sandbar/ocean interfaces, that the bottom contour generates a fairly predictable wave form when given the right tide and wind factors.

So, a wave-coupling effect could well play hell with any given hull length, your example being the 32s.

Oh well, all the more reason to step up to the 38 or larger, or for me, a 50 ft. sloop or ketch.

To hell with retirement communities. Mine will be a marina or the horizon, and that's that.

What about pumping poison gas down their burrows? I was thinking something like perchlorethylene brake cleaner solvent. Much heavier than air, so it would flow down to the lowest point in the burrow, and displace any air present. With all the air displaced, the ants would eventually suffocate, if the the perc didn't poison them outright.

561 I have no experience with fire ants, fortunately, but I have been plagued with kitchen ants off and on. I was reluctant to use pesticides because I was afraid of harming my cats.

I learned that ammonia is toxic to ants. Spraying them with Windex kills them as fast as Raid. For a while I was able to keep the population down that way. Just be sure to kill every one you see, and that will keep them from swarming.

Eventually, I got tired of that and went to buy ant traps in the grocery store. I had a choice between Raid traps and these, which were advertised as environmentally friendly:

http://www.maggiesfarmproducts.com/details.php?prodId=33

I decided to give them a try. There were six traps in the package, and I put out three on the kitchen counter. Within two days the ants were gone. I was stunned by how well they worked. That was a couple of months ago, and I haven't seen an ant since.

I suspected that it was new to you. How many times have you seen it work/not work?

All dishwasher slots are the same size. All dishwashers are, thus, the same size. Unless you have some odd issue like "the whole area flooded and the floor swelled up and now the space over the swelled-up floor is 1/4-inch shorter than my dishwasher", the problem is that you have not identified the dishwasher front-and-rear height adjustments.

There are a wide variety of seal issues with dishwashers. I just replaced a nice dishwasher because it was exhibiting at least 3 different symptoms simultaneously when I was ready to fix one.

If you hate this dishwasher because of something it is doing wrong, please say what it is doing; if you hate it because it's a Philippina who only speaks Tagalog, we've got another problem.

567 I have no experience with fire ants, fortunately, but I have been plagued with kitchen ants off and on.

Technically, it isn't anhydrous ammonia, but an ammonium cation associated with some anion.

Actual anhydrous ammonia is really nasty stuff. Went temporarily bling and by breathing supressed due to that stuff.

People who want to use ammonia as a fuel substitute fro gasoline are insane.

Posted by: Willy J. at June 18, 2016 01:41 AM (Yskl0)

I think in order to kill insects with electricity, you have to get enough current flowing through their tiny bodies to basically cook them. And insects typically have dry exteriors, so high surface resistance. Very different from worms.

I wonder if microwaves would work?

Fire ants

Is the fire ant problem only outside, or is it also inside a house or other structure?

If the ants are inside a structure, a vacuum cleaner can be used to vacuum them up. You may have to open a wall or floor to get at the nest. Dispose of the contents (under water, in a fire, amuse yourself).

If outside, you will likely have to content yourself with clearing a perimeter. Get a post hole digger, dig up the mounds (go down about 14") and empty the dirt from each scoop into a wheelbarrow or large bucket. The ants will be all over the dirt, and you can shake most of them to the top. Pour everything into a large plastic tub of water, wait for the ants to float to the top, scoop them into a grocery bag.

Once you get as many as you can from each mound, empty the water and dirt (now mud) into the hole you dug.

Rinse and repeat.

14" probably won't get all of the ants, but you will get a lot, and maybe effectively kill the mound.

It's a lot of work, and it never ends, but physical removal cuts the problem dramatically.

Yeah, I saw that casting video several months ago; kinda cool and arty looking, but not very practical for down heah, where we get 4 or 5 mounds per month on an acre of land.

The gasoline suffocates them. It rarely takes more than one application to kill the nest. Nasty little buggers. You don't want to get stung by even one; it raises a small blister.

Mateen's background, however, was checked again by G4S in 2013 after the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office requested he be removed from the St. Lucie County Courthouse patrol after he allegedly made derogatory comments to a deputy.

A deputy at the courthouse mentioned the Middle East to Mateen, who reacted by threatening the deputy, said Sheriff Ken Mascara, who attended the Wednesday night meeting at the community's Island Club.

"Omar became very agitated and made a comment that he could have al-Qaida kill my employee and his family," Mascara said Wednesday. We were a better nation when duelling was commonplace.

If re-introduced today, the impartial judge would shoot the H8r, and everybody would applaud...

The thing to understand about duelling, is that one could always capitulate -- it would only mean that subequent public pronouncements would be labelled "asswipe". Take, for example, Gersh Kuntzman.....Gersh writes pathetic, sniveling post about being afraid of guns; random gun supporter challenges him to a duel for being shamefully testosterone-deficient, he declines.

From then on, his drivel should be labelled "pussy Kuntzman, who declined a duel on 9/14/15, says "XXXXXXXX".

"Should"...

You'ld have to successfully duel the entire media class.

Not saying that would be a bad thing....

I was born too soon. Where the hell were these teachers when I was a teenager?

(P.E. stands for Physical Education, no? Sounds like she was doing her job.)

635 A deputy at the courthouse mentioned the Middle East
to Mateen, who reacted by threatening the deputy, said Sheriff Ken
Mascara, who attended the Wednesday night meeting at the community's
Island Club.

"Omar became very agitated and made a comment that
he could have al-Qaida kill my employee and his family," Mascara said
Wednesday. "If that wasn't bad enough, he followed it up with very
disturbing comments about women and followed it up with very disturbing
comments about Jews and then went on to say that the Fort Hood shooter
was justified in his actions."

I'm trying to imagine a US-born Nazi in 1942 threatening people the way Mateen did. And of course such a person would get locked up quickly. The difference between Islam and a foreign government is significant, but it doesn't feel that way right now.

The husband of this murdered MP is quite a sleaze ball. He was a charity fat cat before he was forced to resign due to sexual misconduct. He and the MP put their kids lives at risk with that river stunt. Immediately after her death he used it to rail against the Leave campaign.

644 I'm watching a Cisco Kid episode. Between their accents and the ones they have for the "Indians" some serious bad acting going on. Plus one of the "Indians" forgets her accent about every third sentence.

645 Mornin.

485 Hmm, these people combined portraits of *every* president to see what image they would get if they ran them through 'facial averaging software.'

The end result is very father figure-y.

Soooo... the end result of blending the faces of every US POTUS is George W. Bush. Color me unconvinced.
