"The inability of most people to pass an Ideological Turing Test saddens me. My daily internet meanderings take me to an eclectic variety of sites. The one unifying factor among them is that most of the people in the comments section make no attempt whatsoever to understand their opponents on whatever the issue at hand may be. What the f*ck is hate speech, exactly? Like another phony, malleable concept - obscenity - it is simply a political category that gives power to the powerful to pick and choose what lesser mortals are allowed to read, think, and discuss (in the US, obscenity law did keep Lady Chatterley's Lover from being published for decades, so it did have that going for it). Beyond that, hate - like envy - is the planet's greatest renewable energy source, motivating humans to live better, richer, freer lives (my grandparents didn't leave Europe in the 1910s because they loved it). In the US, libel, which by definition is false, is already punishable by law. So are 'fighting words', and plots and actions to cause physical harm. Beyond that, let speech rip like Lear howling on the heath. Freddie Gray: Prosecution's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Trial Hoo boy. There are bad days in court and then there's Freddie Gray case prosecutor-days in court. Their "rough ride" 'expert' witness was destroyed during cross-examination and prosecutors were reduced to blaming detectives and society for the shambling mess they presented. Here is the prosecution's 'rough ride' 'expert', Neill Franklin, being cross-examined: Everyone is now dumber for having had to listen to their dumpster fire of a case. May God have mercy on their souls. And why it is exactly what the founding fathers had in mind when they drafted the Second Amendment. Plus the hypocrisy of Hillary and others who decry the AR-15 as a weapon of war useful only for murder yet have lived for decades in a secure bubble surrounded by men with....AR-15s.
"Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons, should meet these families and explain why that makes sense..Why is it they think our liberty requires these repeated tragedies? That's not the meaning of liberty." Allahpundit wonders if he's going to finally let the mask drop. I keep hoping against hope that he's finally going to go full YOLO, drop the pretense that it's "assault weapons" he's specially interested in, and call outright for full confiscation of guns. That's what he and the left want, palpably; he has seven months left as president so he'll pay no price politically for doing it (although Hillary will). He's reduced here to arguing, with no obvious basis in fact, that the children of Sandy Hook would be alive and in fifth grade now if only the degenerate who murdered them hadn't had an assault weapon. If he'd used a pair of semiautomatic pistols instead, they would have survived? Of course not, but the "assault weapons" preoccupation is and has always been just a way to get a foot in the door culturally en route to banning all semiautomatics. I'd say there's a nonzero chance once the election's over that Obama will come clean about his heart's fondest desire in that regard. The Rich Aren't Paying Their Fair Share - They're Paying Everyone's Share The top 20% of taxpayers by income are basically financing the government for everyone else. And that's not good for a number of reasons. Averaged across all three lower-income quintiles, we could say that the lowest 60% of American households by income received average transfer payments of nearly $10,000 in 2013 ($9,600 to be exact). And because the government has no money of its own, where did those transfer payments come from to finance the "net recipient households"? Where else, but from the top two income quintiles, and realistically almost exclusively from Americans in the highest income quintile. Always Wrong and Always Terrible: Why You May Want to Just Give Up on Parenting in the Internet Age Memphis man says yes. Hard Times For Judge Who Sued a Dry-Cleaner for $65M Over Missing Pants Back in 2005 DC administrative judge Roy Pearson dropped off a pair of pants at a local dry cleaners. Then something happened to the pants that led to a perpetual, insane legal vendetta on his part. This was a titanic struggle between Roy L. Pearson, Jr., then an administrative-law judge in the District of Columbia, and his neighborhood dry-cleaning establishment. Pearson claimed Custom Cleaners lost a pair of his suit pants. Here they are, the cleaners said. Those aren't mine, he said. It escalated. The cleaners offered to settle, but Pearson could not be satisfied. He refused settlement offers of $1,150, then $3,000, then $12,000 (for lost pants, remember). He eventually sued, alleging multiple violations of a consumer-protection statute; saying he was entitled to $1,500 per violation per defendant per day, he demanded $65,462,500. See "Lawyer Seeking $65 Million for Pants-Related Fraud" (Apr. 27, 2007); see also here for more on his math. He lost that case, lost the appeal, lost his job, lost his lawsuit over losing his job, lost various other related lawsuits and appeals, and now 11 years later after destroying the dry cleaner's lives and his own he's now facing legal ethics charges. In 2015, the DCs Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed charges alleging Pearson's professional conduct, and now, the Board of Professional Responsibility has found him guilty on two charges. No doubt he will appeal. And sue some more. Draconian "occupational licensing" has long ago gone beyond licensing occupations where there is a serious threat to life and limb. That story about the judge should be a cautionary tale for everyone thinking that lawyers won't abuse the law because some judge will drop the hammer on them.
Rule #1 of the legal union is that they will protect their own. Always. Rule #2 is that lawyers almost never get in real trouble for "ethics" violations. Those end up being slaps on the wrist. Maybe. Rule #3 is that lawyers will only really get in trouble for screwing around with Escrow accounts. The lawyer could embezzle all they want from the firms operating account, but the second they get clients money, they better turn their license in real quick. I, to this day, maintain that Michelle Obama got caught dipping into client's escrow account funds and that is why she "gave up" her law license. No one gives up their license voluntarily unless there is an issue. That and her hospital "job" she got when Bammer was elected to the senate show that there was a way to have her pay back those funds most quietly. My great great great (think I got the # of greats correct) grandfather started a militia. No prior military experience. Not appointed by anybody. The Confederacy was coming to take anything of economic value in his town, especially his saltpeter mine (for the manufacture of gunpowder), and he said "fuck that, we're fighting" and got all of the town's old men together to defend it.
He was assassinated by the rebel raiders, but his militia not only saved the day, but pursued them across East Tennessee and sent them back over the Carolina border with their tails between their legs. All without one whit of government involvement. That's a militia. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at June 16, 2016 11:48 PM (J+mig) 52

Once the attacks become too frequent and too severe and lead to demands for the deportation of all Moslem non-citizens (and their sponsors) and the abolishing of all Moslem travel to our Western nations, the Left/Civil Service/MSM/various Churches etc. will fight it by saying (as I think Obama just suggested in one of his two Orlando speeches) that we can't do that because it's anti-Western and anti-liberal (the "good" liberal I mean too, not the Left's version of it) and that we just have to accept some casualties as the price we pay to maintain our civilized Western societies. They'll probably get away with that explanation too until there is a nuke attack on a major city. (When that happens, then I hope we'll go full-on Crusade to wipe them out forever that they won't be able to ignore because mobs will be killing any politician that doesn't approve of it.)
The way to fight that once the non-nuke attacks become too severe (other than immediate military coups with overwhelming popular backing) is to demand that for a proportion of every Islamic terrorist attack deaths, a member of the government and a senior civil servant etc. and/or their immediate family members selected at random will be executed too so that they can share the risks along with the ordinary citizenry and be *seen* to be sharing the risks along with the ordinary citizenry. Keep this in mind for the future. Posted by: andycanuck at June 16, 2016 11:57 PM (PLnZs) 78

What's the expression? Slow is fast?
Posted by: Insomniac ---------------- My experience in racing convinced me that the idea of making things happen 'fast' was a prescription for losing. In point of fact, one ends up being quicker by 'slowing' what is happening to a rate which it is smoothly controllable. Overcooking it into a turn results in panic braking and/or the adoption of bad lines. The fastest riders are not the most dramatic, but the smoothest and most controlled. There is a deeper mystery, but it is cultural.
The shooter had to change mags. 30 round magazines. He fired for an extended time, and had to reload. Where was the Rush and Crush AKA Zerg rush? Is Zerg rush too old for todays hip crowd? The crowd basically just let themselves be targets if they could not get away. A nightclub has a lot of weapons at hand (or feet for stiletto heels) to use. Yet they did not. I'll admit it would be hard to be grind dancing to a techno beat with your new best friend one moment, and rushing a shooter the next. But that would save a lot of lives. Mark Moogalian, Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone all worked to stop a heavily armed and murderous Islamic shooter on Thalys train 9364 back in 2015. The shooter had nine magazines with 270 rounds. IIRC he never got a chance to put in a fresh magazine. Those heroes were all culturally American, and rushed the shooter, disregarding their own safety. They saved a number of lives. Over 500 people were on that train. General procedure in 'clearing' a room - one dude kicks the door, everybody throws in grenades - BOOM! - then you go in and hose the place down with your SMG. What bullets and blast don't kill gets beaten to death with your entrenching tool. It took an off base cop to put him down. Gay latinos, military personnel -- same result. Posted by: GnuBreed at June 17, 2016 01:46 AM (gyKtp) OK, let's return to the "issued a 1911 with your High School diploma" scenario. I mean, I could go into the free-range gun-free hunting park nature of a disarmed military base, vs. the confined quarters of a dance club or airplane cabin....but let's focus on the most important deciding factor: in a perfect world, EVERYBODY WOULD BE ARMED -- not just jihadis, criminals, or the mentally ill. Because there are a lot more non-jihadis, non-criminals, and sane people -- and you'd know the jihadis, criminals, and mental cases would be outgunned. Went on a photo assignment today - not my primary gig, but one of my many, many side-gigs - for a dude what wanted some cool new pics for his social media presence. (yeah, I only shoot film, and the guy knew this, but said he wanted that, so he could get some good prints made and framed.) Anywho, I show up at his place and start unpacking my gear and he sees, down in my camera case, that I've got, next to my camera and flash and film-backs, a CZ52. 'Cool piece, dude,' he says. Yeah, the shoot went really well after that. Him and his partner, in formal portrait poses (all low-key, high-contrast b&w, per his specs), with their various - and sometimes amazing - firearms. Dude paid me cash, tipped me with a bottle of bourbon and box of tokarev ammo. So if dipshits think that changing the constitution is such a great idea. Then start with the first. It's freedom of speech that allowed these imams to inflame their minions to kill. It's freedom of religion that allowed these same imams to preach their hate. Along with the rest of their blind sheep on the Internet. So if you really think changing the constitution is the answer, then get to the root cause and change it. Yes I'm being facetious of course. But as ridiculous as it sounds, it's just as ridiculous to start trying to take away other rights. But once we head back down that road we automatically invite tyranny for an optical illusion of safety.
This POS broke how many laws, yet were led to believe that had he not been able to buy guns legally that he would have given up his cause? Someone willing to die would be that uncommitted as to not get them another way? Nonsense. Gun control is a lazy argument. It's a tangible easy fix. But it's false and will do nothing. But then we can move on the next thing to ban. Posted by: Minnfidel at June 17, 2016 02:35 AM (aZxzS) 305

Wakey wakey eggs & bakey! Billy Squier was in a pretty good band called Piper before he hit it big as a solo performer. I saw him on his very first solo tour- he had been added as a last minute opening- opening act to some show I went to (headliner lost to the mists of time.) I think "The Stroke" had just hit the charts so his label found a tour to toss him onto. He barely had enough material for a 40-minute set so he was still doing a few Piper tunes. I'm thinking about going back to Koolige. Get a degree in Criminology. I do have some training already but I would like to complete it.
I do have a mostly free eddukatsion coming from the state of Illinois. One central theme remains the same with any criminal investigation. The vast majority of cases are solved when the criminal makes a mistake. This can also apply to other situations as well. Just sit back and wait for the figure of your mystery make a mistake. Sometimes a bit of gentle prodding can speed up the time frame. You have to careful with that prodding though, lest you turn your target away. Something else that stands out with LEO's. That vast majority of unsolved cases remain that way because of how good the seen of the crime was cleaned up. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. at June 17, 2016 05:22 AM (WVsWD) 344

Good morning everyone!
Super glue for dopping stones is so far working out better than I would have expected it to. The longer I allow the glue to set, the stronger the bond. For instance, when transferring my test stone, the glue had not fully cured until an hour had passed, and it took another hour with super glue remover to free the crown dop. Transfer takes longer than wax, but the stone/dop joint is much stronger. I was planning on experimenting with epoxy too...but I don't think I'll even bother now. Super glue works too well. So, I'll finish this stone up, then cut an 80+ carat chunk of lilac colored CZ in this design: http://tinyurl.com/2dk8ak Posted by: Sticky Wicket at June 17, 2016 05:30 AM (L1Xf4) 348

There's hot and then there's hot. Some types of cancer can result from frequent repeated trauma, like overly hot liquids that may not cause immediate injury. This is the basis for the cancer potential. It doesn't really matter what the liquid is. It could be plain water. Coffee just happens to be the most common hot drink for much of the world.

In 1999 I spent several months doing IT stuff for a police department in a small Los Angeles County city near Pasadena. My conversations with detectives suggested that 90% of their time was dealing with stupid people and the remaining time was for a much smaller group of smart people committing crimes. One smart crook could eat up as much time as dozen of stupid crooks. OTOH, a lot of thugs imported from third world hellholes have a lot of lead exposure growing up, making them suited for little else than being thugs controlled by someone much more cognitively functional. So much of what those cops had to do may have been dealing with smart crooks by proxy. Posted by: Epobirs at June 17, 2016 05:55 AM (IdCqF) 356

The same people who will tell you what a pathetic failure the war on drugs has been actually think making firearms illegal will make them unobtainable. That somehow a centuries old technology can be somehow made to disappear while at the same time the technology for doing complex manufacturing in a basement is just emerging. At some point in the next decade or so there is going to be a lot of arguing in Congress over how to limit what people can make in their garage with a few thousand bucks of equipment and the right data file. A savvy person can do quite a lot now but this is going to enable people with little or none of the currently needed skills and thus make it much harder to spot a potential source. They are still predicting the temps to hit the 100s this weekend and the high 100s on Monday. Shoot me now...

#359 - I hate to break this to you, but I heard someone on MSNBC breathlessly report with a tone of impending doom that "Some people have the capability of 3D printing guns."

#359 --- and now that I think of it, I remember years ago learning that some Iron Curtain country had outlawed typewriters....made it illegal to own one privately. I remember thinking at the time how stupid that sounded. How much you want to bet someone will suggest policing private ownership of 3D printers?

Yeah, weather in LA County is supposed to be pretty awful towards the end of the weekend and next week. June had been quick mild thus far, with one small heat wave.
I know summer has arrived when I drape a towel over the back of my desk chair to catch the sweat coming off of me. The mini-heat wave a while back fooled me into put it on early but it looks like it's going to see some use. Though I'll probably try to spend more time downstairs with the laptop if I don't need the desktop machine's power. We hate to turn on the AC because we're so concerned about running up a bill but with my elderly mother in the house there may not be much choice. Extremes of heat and cold are big threats to old people. Posted by: Epobirs at June 17, 2016 06:23 AM (IdCqF) 366

Obama's war on terrorism is bringing as many America hating muslims as possible. And the GOP is good with it. It is part of the Muslim Brotherhood plan to take over.

are y'all getting the over the top dramatics from your weather casters regarding their descriptions of the conditions they describe? It is steamy, feels like, heat index, miserable and on and on? Give me the weather please. With actual data. I don't need a model in a studio telling me how I'm going to 'feel' about weather.

I doubt any damage was done. People have made up their minds already and the polls say that Leave is widely favored.

Yeah, there's been some very premature idiocy, aided by moronic lefty TV shows like 'The Good Wife.' My mother and sister loved that show even though it was deeply insulting to anyone who actually knew anything about the material they were basing their plot devices on. (Plus it really annoyed me when they had an episode where everyone is playing Halo while waiting for election results. The problem is they were all holding PS4 controllers.) But this stuff is moving along toward becoming real in terms of letting somebody with none of the skills associated with 'makers' to produce items that would cause alarm. Not just machining but things like chemical synthesis. The base elements for some very nasty stuff cannot possibly be controlled and an affordable desktop appliance that snaps together those elements to make the desired molecule means the effort for a disturbed individual to wreak great destruction is hugely reduced. I have no doubt they do stuff like what happens with high end printers if you try to reproduce paper currency. (This is less of an issue now that most nations are moving away from using a single substance derived from natural fibers in their currency.) They will typically place a very noticeable flaw in the output or simply refuse to do the job. Early maker machines will refuse to produce certain molecules but once the hardware becomes sufficiently common, how hard will it be to hack together a version without those limitations? There was always that one guy in the neighborhood you could go to to get your game console hacked so it would play pirated games.
