Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Open ThreadSo I got out the adhesive contact lenses. They glue them to your eyes for protection. My eyes had reacted badly to them and got very inflamed and blodshot. I should get better now that they're out but I still can't see print. Sorry, I did not realize this would be week of healing before I could see. On the plus side, when I put in moistening eye drops, I can see well for about five seconds before everthing gets fuzzy again. I'm kind of like Arya Stark -- blind, isolated, and not worth following for the past seven years. Meager improvement: I put drops in my eyes and I was actually able to read. For five seconds. Oh: My doctor was very understated. He called my red-as-wine eyes "a little inflamed" and when I couldn't even read the big E on the eye chart he acknowledged my progress was "on the slower side." That was almost as understated as the surgeon telling me "the next two days are going to be rough" right before the surgery. It was the first time anyone had really brought that up.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I envision those scenes from Minority Report. Tom Cruise stumbling and feeling his way around a filthy kitchen where the surgeon and his nurse had just been getting it on . . . slaps his way around a busted old refrigerator, misses the fresh sandwich and milk on the top shelf and pulls out the plate full of mould, takes a big bite, chuffs it out... Stumbles into a dirty bathtub, fills it with cold water when the spyders come running in, accidentally lets out a single air bubble. Forced to open one eye to the blinding light while the spyder crawls around his eyeball to check his iris... Hits post... Ace:
The fact that you can see after drops means your basic vision is okay. You just have to wait for your eyes to heal now. I had all sorts of complications with my LASIK 12 years ago. White blood cells filled the space beneath my eye flaps so they had to be reopened and cleaned. Them the flaps got wrinkled and had to be smoothed. I had the same burning pain - it feels like the burn from campfire smoke but lasts for-fucking-ever. I wore bandage contact lenses for three weeks after three surgeries on each eye. They eventually healed to 20/25 and 20/30. Stick with it and good luck. Posted by: Ed Anger at June 16, 2016 12:13 PM (RcpcZ) Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 16, 2016 12:14 PM (p4UlV) 80

My take on LV NHL
1. Las Vegas has 2M people that live there. And everyone is from somewhere else which means many of the games will be quasi home games for the visiting team. So it won't be a problem filling the seats. Plus of course add in the tourists. 2. Gambling? Big deal. You can gamble on sports from your iphone anywhere in the world. That's an old and dated argument in the era of Draft Kings 3. Yeah it's weird to have hockey when it's 95 degrees outside, but if that were a reason to not have an NHL team, 1/4 of the teams would have to fold as well. I was told at one time, albeit probly 10 years now, that I was borderline lasik correctable and I'd likely still end up with glasses or contacts, but just not as strong. Posted by: IP at June 16, 2016 12:14 PM (aQQbl) ------------------- Good luck to ya. I agree, surgery isn't worth it if you'll still have to wear contacts just to see. Maybe the science has progressed since then. Lasik still can't treat age-related far-sightedness (the reading-glasses thing), but they're working on that, too. Some test procedures have actually been done on patients in a San Diego study. Posted by: iforgot (NeverTrumpers, avert eyes) at June 16, 2016 12:18 PM (pC96u) 125
I had cataract surgery in both eyes last September. I have glaucoma so my doc did them early. I had a reaction to the surgical drops and had to take steroid drops for a month. They did get better eventually and I do see better. I was one of the 30% that get scar tissue around the new lenses but my pressures have stabilized. I will do whatever they tell me to do for my eyes. Both parents and grandparents went blind from glaucoms.

When I was working in Tampa I went to a bunch of Lightning games. The rink is right down town on the bay and between periods they have an open air bar patio overlooking the bay. It does not suck. Wait until they get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Back when Dallas made it, it went so long into spring/summer that they had trouble keeping the rink frozen. Way too hot outside. They don't like, apparently, to tell you about this kind of stuff. I had an inguinal hernia repaired in 2006. Ace, Don't despair. I had PRK and had a bad reaction to the adhesive contact lenses. Once the lenses came off, improvement was pretty steady. I'd say I had near perfect vision by about 2 weeks after the lenses came out, which was four days after the surgery. PRK is known to take longer to reach perfect vision than LASIK, which is why LASIK is so popular, but the problem rate for LASIK is higher than with PRK.

Some people have thin corneas or other eye issues that make LASIK too risky, so only option is PRK.
Posted by: brak at June 16, 2016 12:17 PM (MJuTN) I had an assessment done for PRK surgery a few years ago. Doc said my corneas were too thin to allow for the degree of correction required. And apparently Lasik has the same constraints, perhaps moreso. But now I have incipient cataracts, so if they continue to grow and obstruct my vision, I can have cataract surgery at Alberta Medical's expense, and get 20/20 vision again. This surgery has become routine, and low-risk. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 16, 2016 12:45 PM (GSdpU) 286

Ace probably won't (can't) read this, but WTH.
I had lasik (flap & zap) ~16 years ago. It definitely took longer to recover than I was told, but I did eventually recover with almost 20/20. Night vision was never as good as before, but I accepted that as a good trade-off for not needing to wear glasses (could never bring myself to wear contacts; zapping my eyes was preferable to poking things into them everyday). A few years ago the edges of one of the old flaps got infected and I needed drops to cure. I was surprised to learn that the flaps never really heal, at least not in the same sense that other cuts to your body completely heal. Now that I'm well into middle age, my arms are getting too short and I may need reading glasses, though my distance vision is still fine. Still 16-years w/o any glasses was a pretty good run. Hang in there buddy.
I had it done like 11 years ago. You are correct no one really said it was going to hurt. It doesn't hurt at the time of course, but the next couple of days are like a double tooth ache in your eyes. When they brought me back for the post op check a day or two (I forget) later. I had a complication. The flap on one of my eyes had lifted an I had to be reoperated on. They did it right then. I was not able to see much for the first couple of days and all of the sudden it improved a lot. 20/20 for many years. Now I have to wear reading glasses but can still see distance pretty well. In the first day or so post op I was kind of angry at myself for doing it -- given the complication and uncertainty. A week later, I was thrilled and very happy I did it. Still am. Dear Kuntzman, big fan. I am trying to go green in order to save the Earth. Dying polar bears make me sad. Should I buy a Toyota Prius? -Carbon Neutral in Carson City Dear Carbon, I drove a Prius once and it changed me forever. As son as I climbed inside he minimalist brutalist interio of this carbon fiber Japanese death machine it was as if I was driving a monster truck. I pushed start. The engine was a throaty roar like a thousand nuclear jet bombers. I immediately soiled my trousers to prevent this beast of the land of hentai from raping me. Tentacles are NOT OKAY. In my haste to escape, I touched a lever, and the windshield wipers began beating like a reapers sickle threshing horror. Trying to reach the escape handle, I struck a phallus-like pole, and lights began to blink. Blink. Blink. A light. A terrible, red light! BLINK BLINK! Shrieking and flailing, I clutched desperately at the door, and tumbled, helpless, into the street. In the cold New York City rain, I lay there helpless and soiled in the gutter. The terrifying Prius looming over me, asserting its alpha dominance, and I crawled away. It does strike me as a bit suspicious, given how much money England represents for the EU. They are about 20% or more of the entire GDP of the EU, and control most of its finances. "How does someone ... get a gun in the UK?"
That't the myth -- that countries with strict gun control are gun free. In every country there's a thriving black market where anyone can get anything they want, for a price. Even in countries where you can legally get a gun w/enough paperwork, at some point it just becomes easier/cheaper to go underground. That's one (of many) reason why gun control doesn't work. At the point where people start ignoring the law, further laws have no effect. Posted by: Bacon Jeff at June 16, 2016 01:48 PM (VGRuw) 423

Very late post on this thread here, I know, but I just got home from work, what can I say?
Last January I had fusion surgery on the C3-C4 vertebrae/disc area in my neck. It was far more brutal than I'd been led to believe. For on thing they hyper-extend your neck (tilt it all the way back, then go about the same distance again - get someone to help if you can't swing it yourself) for the entire surgery, and they hold you that way. Also, they go in through the front and so have to move basically everything in the front of the throat over to the side so they can surgery. So the next day, as I was preparing to leave, the doc (who could easily see what kind of pain I'd spent a horrible night in) said, "Okay, now, this is going to get worse before it gets better. For about two or so days. But THEN it'll get better. Slowly. Very slowly." Yeah? You don't say. Good luck and fast/faster healing, Ace. Posted by: Bill in TN at June 16, 2016 06:29 PM (3LsBS) 433
>> 205 The good news is that eventually you will get feeling back in that area.
Mostly that's true, but I have a small area where the sensation is still messed up, 12 years later. The surgeon told me that sometimes the nerves are not just cut but damaged and can actually cause pain, and that some older surgeons would do something to kill the nerve pre-emptively, in case it MIGHT cause problems. And then he came and was still wearing the ultra dark sunglasses that wrap completely around your face. He said he was still seeing this halo around lights even with the sunglasses on. Pretty much squashed any temptation I had to get correctable eye surgery.
