Yes! My mom made a great German Chocolate cake from scratch. And a great Red Velvet Cake and great raised doughnuts and bread and bundt cake and apple turnovers, and - great lots of stuff. And she never used a mix.
She was a so-so cook but a terrific baker. I'm the opposite.

The young coconut (still green and somewhat soft on the outside) that they get coconut water from is the only one you should eat raw.
The mature coconut (hard brown shell) is the one that has milk and that's the one you cook/bake with.

I had a date shake once, but it turns out I was getting a horrible flu while I was drinking it, and by the time I finished it I was vomiting. The association between nausea and date shake has persisted, and I've never tried a second one.
One objective truth I managed to extract is that it wasn't sufficiently liquefied; it's really hard to make a date skin go away. It was a shake with a lot of little shards.

I need you guys (and gals) tonight. I went swimming today with my family and I got swept away in the current and almost drowned. I completely panicked. I have never been so terrified. A kind stranger snatched me out before my husband could get to me. My children saw. My husband's been beating himself up and constantly apologizing to me. I feel so guilty and like a failure as a parent. What should I do?

How is your swimming competency? Not exactly sure of your situation, but in general if you're a decent swimmer, and not injured, you can be patient and swim your way out/bob around until helped. It's the panic that's the problem.
All you can do is make sure your swimming is up to the level you might need for any situation, match your capabilities to possible challenges. Same as anything else.

In Brazil vendors walk down the sand selling almost anything you can imagine, and some things you can't. But a while ago, they mainly had food. Little pastries, fried shrimp, mango, coconut water. And beer.
You could spend the whole day at the beach, eat like a king, without even leaving the sand.

He certainly saved you, which is obvious. It's likely he saved your husband, too, unless your husband can swim like Michael Phelps.
Even a placid looking, 4 mph current is faster than most humans can swim. It is powerful, relentless and unforgiving.
Your husband shouldn't feel guilty, he tried but the other guy was closer, faster or both.
You though, have every right to be shaken to your core. A close call like that does make you sit still, reflect, and take stock.
What do I suggest? Celebrate life and living.
Enjoy a good steak. Drink too much wine with it. Hug your kids. And ravish your husband later tonight with all the fervor and passion with which you'd have held onto a life ring in the water.

In many many places with good surf, people use the "rip" to get outside, while working less at it. Helps take you right out to the surfline, where rips by definition just die out.

Supposedly the rumor is, big changes coming down the line. Mainly, the company will be shutting down CA production and moving all to TX. My boss has already said I have a choice of a number of positions I can take. I figure it is nice and respectful for them to give me an option to choose what I want to do.

It happens almost every day. A friend and I got caught in a rip current off the coast of Oahu a few years ago. And not for the first time. After a few choice curse words, we just rode it out until the rip lessened, swam parallel to the shore until we were free from the current, and then swam to shore. It doesn't have to be a big deal if you keep your wits about you. This was your first time. If it happens to you again, you'll be much better prepared because you've experienced it. Your key takeaway: you survived it. You know you can do it again. And above all, don't panic.

(5) Your husband would not have abandoned you -- he might not have been situated to get there first, but he would have done whatever it might take to get to you. (6) terrifying things happen to good people -- look to faith beyond yourself to sustain you and guide you through such crises.
Finally, turn the bad into good. (7) Talk earnestly with your children about listening to concerns, not overextending, and how terrible you would feel if they were swept from your arms to be rescued by some stranger. (
improve yourself -- talk to a lifeguard about currents -- learn more about them so that you can not only save yourself from a replay but counsel others; and (9) find a way to give back to your community -- maybe you could be a rescuer one day, maybe you could post flyers on the beach regarding dangerous currents, maybe you could host a fundraiser for the lifeguards....the possibilities are endless.

Just spitballin' here, but did they check your dad for Type I diabetes? Friend of mine went thru the same thing you described above, after about 4 weeks of testing, they discovered it was Type I. He'd contacted Agent Orange about 12 years earlier in Vietnam, and as a result, developed Type I. Again RK, just a WAG on my part.

The cure for insecure hotel Wi-Fi (which is everywhere) is VPN. I'm currently using a commercial one for times when I'm out-of-town, but the lack of an API is making me consider rolling my own. I can do it on any Linux box or in the firewall router.

The damnable ECT has done the trick, it is supposed to do in the majority of cases. I haven't noticed one shred of memory loss, you know recent events surrounding the treatment.
Save for her age, they would've already sent her home. They are still a bit concerned with her eating enough. She's said something several times about not wanting to eat too much for fear of getting fat again.
She's worried about that in the past, her weight, but nothing abnormal I don't think, but after this, that is a worry. They did say they thought she ate well, better than she would before, today.

Thanks for triggering a random memory event.
Years ago, we did a dive trip to Honduras. Even before we arrived at the resort, we ran into "Dr. Twinkie" and the guy who was his "date" for the excursion. [The "date", btw, was a really nice guy who was marketing a line of organic burritos. The obvious joke was to label him as the "burrito packer" and give him a ration of crap, but everyone bonded with him because he was such a mensch -- a quiet, self-effacing guy who you could absolutely count on to do the right thing. AFAIK, all the guests and staff felt sorry for him being a guest of Dr. Twinkie by the end of our stay.
Anyway, the dive we were doing descended along a wall until a notch/tunnel up through the wall, which ended in a basin on top of the reef. This had been used as a feeding station for a long while, but the style at the time was to ignore the various grifter sealife in hopes they'd exhibit more natural behavior.
So it was quite a shock when a 6' moray eel came out of the rocks to swim toward Dr. Twinkie -- and he proceeded to lewdly rub it all over himself. There was the nausea of Twinkie's evident self-love, the anxiety that we'd have to do a bloody rescue in shark habitat, the technical aspects of the dive, the rage at the stupidity involved....so many mixed feelings.

I was giving him some leeway. I think they were 8/10 pounders. But they were so shiny.....because even 16 year old girls don't use them.

She was okay for about a week, then we could tell something was wrong. She fell into deep depression, and it was diagnosed eventually as psychotic major depression, the worst kind. It was a nightmare dealing with her and when I finally got her to the mental health experts, they immediately recommended hospitalization.
We admitted her May 16th. They tried drugs for about 2 weeks, but no response (psychotic depression, I've learned, is very resistant to drugs). She wasn't wanting to eat, and so this was a critical case, and ECT was indicated, and the only thing they have that can pull someone out of this.
ECT, 'shock treatment" brings to my mind images of a sadistic Nazi torture master. It is not anything like that now, although there were terrible abuses in the past, which is where the images come from.
They still have no idea how or why it works, other than "banging the TV when it goes on the fritz", and it remains controversial. But it can usually do the trick, and it did it here, looks like.

Lye is a base, sodium hydroxide, NaOH.

They first hit on it when they had noticed, in the old days, that mental patients who had seizures due to various other conditions seemed to improve their mental state after such seizures.
So, let's try to induce seizures in these crazy patients and see if that helps. The early attempts were crude and horrific, using drugs and other things to try to induce seizures. I think they intentionally put people into insulin shock and shit like that.
Then they hit on using electrical current, through the brain, to induce the seizure, which seemed to be the best way to do it.
And of course, it was horrific, too. It puts the brain into a massive seizure, every neuron firing wildly. Which fires all the nerves, causing a massive convulsion. They'd strap 'em down, shove a bit in their mouth and fire it.
Without the "bit" in the mouth, they would bite their tongue in two. And they'd break bones from the violent muscle contractions.
They didn't know what they were doing, and sometimes it was intentional and sadistic, all the abuses in the asylums we've heard about.
That is where the "Nazi torture master" imagery comes from.

She was a finalist on The Voice. And while I can't say I'm a fan, I can at least appreciate that the young lady really had a talent, a voice and a personality such, to launch her on what seemed to be a promising career.
Her assailant then shot and killed himself, after being tackled and taken down by Ms. Grimme's brother, who was there at the appearance with her.
Of course, the MSM will blame the gun, rather than the embodied evil of the killer himself.
But still, prayers for and condolences to her family. Unimaginable loss and grief.

A nurse called about it yesterday mid-afternoon. She didn't like it. She couldn't say anything directly about her opinion, being a lowly nurse, and they'd probably haul her on the carpet, but she informed me, in a clever between-the-lines manner. She wanted me and my father to object, and object strongly, so this would be weighed in the decision.
We did. They moved her anyway, and she stayed overnight. But, it was all for nothing, a big stupid waste of time, because two more geriatric patients came in this morning. And so back my mother went.
It's bean counters in the administration of the hospital. I'm sure it was something, "Dr., if you cannot say with certainty this is a bad thing, and not medically advisable, then we are going to proceed!"

Further quirks arose with the P-61A Black Widows of the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron which arrived in England just after D-Day. The painted the invasion stripes on their planes, the olive drab and the later glossy black Black Widows, even though there was a directive excluding night fighter units.
At least one war-weary P-47D assigned to the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron had the invasion stripes painted out on both the lower and upper surfaces of the wings only to have the stripes reapplied to the lower wings later.

Is it possible that your mom had an abortion at some point? While there seems to be a definite correlation with surgery recovery and depression I've read that there also seems to be a correlation with very elderly women facing "end of life" issues who have had abortions and are now fearful of meeting that aborted child.
We saw this in my husband's grandmother. She was *so* tired and her body was shutting down, but she was also terrified. If it *is* a possible cause, the best thing to do is let her know G-d loves and forgives her. If you don't think it is, than just ignore this as well-meant nosiness.

Good. I'd been wondering since you first said she kept saying she'd lied about something that distressed her, so that's why I asked. Glad to be wrong. It's hard enough dealing with recovery depression (my theory is that either the anesthesia changes brain chemistry for awhile or that the body is putting so many resources into healing that it lets brain chemistry slide).

The report I was reading was about a "high pain" phenomena being noted by hospice workers. The pain was described as excruciating and unresponsive to medication. In a surprising number of cases involving females it turned out the women had had secret abortion and their fear of facing an angry child (in general they didn't seem afraid of *not* going to heaven) and angry G-d was presenting as pain. When prayed with for forgiveness their pain levels returned to those consistent with their actual ailments and they usually passed within a couple of days.

He had warned me that he quit driving it because it had "blown a heater hose", and at first inspection, his diagnosis seemed to be spot-on. But upon looking closely, I determined that the fitting on the head to which the hose was attached was the culprit.
Took the fitting off; it was easy to reach, right on the end of the cylinder head, and two 6 mm screws secure it to the head. It's nothing more than a pipe nipple on a flange, all made of some shitty plastic. The plastic had split axially for over an inch, and that was the source of the leak. And the inside of the part had softened, and become sort of gummy, like partly-set Bondo. So I made a temporary fix by reaming out the gummy inside of the nipple, smearing silicone gasket sealant inside it, and pressing in a short piece of thin-wall steel tubing, which also became the inside wall of the O-ring groove on the flange face. Holds against gravity, anyway. I will order a new part; it's less than $4.
But here's the brain-dead part. To make the head fit that nipple, they had to cast the head with a raised boss on the end, mill that boss flat to get a sealing surface, drill a 20 mm hole for the coolant passage, and drill and tap two 6 mm holes for the screw. Plus tool up a mold for the plastic nipple, and source an O-ring for the seal. So, three machining operations to the head for just that one coolant port. What I would have done: cast the head with a slightly smaller, but maybe one cm thicker boss in the same place, with a divot cast in the middle of it. Then, in one machining operation, using a combined drill/tap, drill and tap for a 3/4" pipe thread, and install a standard 3/4" hose nipple with a 3/4" male pipe thread, a standard part that probably costs a dime or two at the factory level.
Time saved in manufacture, parts and materials saved, and the damn thing will likely never fail.

For example P-61A-10-NO 'Double Trouble' assigned to the 422d NFS in this photo clearly shows time was taken to paint at least the white stripes properly.

As the invasion receded, the lower only invasion stripes were probably applied per specifications as the ground crews had time on all planes. But if you are depicting in a diorama say an RAF Horsa glider that just landed then the stripes will probably be crudely applied.

This is also a dilemma for car restorers, and judges at concours. It's a known fact that nearly all makes had assembly errors, or sloppy paint application in some areas, the realities of mass production. An original, unrestored car will have many such. But if you are paying big bucks to have a car restored, or are spending several thousand hours to do it yourself, do you want to have runs or orange peel in the paint, or have ill-fitting parts? Not likely. So many cars wind up "over-restored".
My philosophy on it is to imagine that you are a dealer or factory rep preparing one of your cars for display in a big-city auto show. So you make it as nice as possible: clean off any over-spray, buff out orange peel, grind off a few rough edges, etc. Blueprint, in other words.
The same could apply to warbirds, I expect. There undoubtedly was a specification for the invasion stripes, and sure they were hurriedly applied by brush. But had time permitted, they would have masked and sprayed accurate stripes. So that's how a restored warbird should look.

Well, that is definitely over-engineering. Plastic nipple, which has two metal sleeves molded into the screw holes, so one "part" made of three components. Plus an O-ring, plus two screws (with captive lock washers). So six pieces (eight if you count the captive washers) to do the job that one threaded hose nipple (a standard universal part) would do. And the plastic deteriorates and fails, eventually.

With you on that. The match feather stick is dumb. "Feather" the match stick, and you weaken it. Good chance the head will fly off when you strike it, and fly into your pocket and set your pants afire. Of course, you'll be warm, so there's that. Wooden matches usually have a bit of wax soaked into the business end, to help them burn longer and brighter. Feather the stick you want to make your fire with.
And, if you have jumper cables, and a knife, a pencil is about the worst way to start a fire. You also have a car there, right? Siphon out a little gasoline from the tank, using a piece of the windshield washer tubing, or vacuum hose. Soak a rag with gas, and make sparks with the jumper cables to ignite the gas. A thin sliver cut from an aluminum soda can would make a good igniter, held in the clamp of one jumper while brushed with the other.
And if you have a car, why not just drive to a hotel?

The Hiroshima museum "wasn't as bad as I expected", as I said at the time I visited. A curious (to me) extensive and well-done side-hall on bomb physics and design.
In any case, at that time (2007?), the hilariously outrageous text of a few panels at the Yasukuni Shrine museum in Tokyo made up for the victim crap in Hiroshima. The "peace monument" at the southern tip of Okinawa is, however, totally stupid.
Top museum tip for visitors to Japan: Chiran, just outside Kagoshima in Kyushu (southern-most main island). Tokutai (kamikaze) airfield site. Very well done, very emotionally hard-hitting little museum.

Fun factoid: at some point fairly early in the occupation, the US had to "borrow" the British Army's executioner (hangman) to carry out capital sentences, so heavy was the "case load". I'm guessing certain crimes were firing squad (Pvt. Slovik, desertion, for example - a military crime), and the hangings were for rape and murder, mostly.

USN plane codes evolved from '41 to '45. First in white letters full modex was painted on the sides so 6-S-4 would be the fourth plane assigned to VS-6 aboard Enterprise. But even that had exceptions, Ranger and Wasp originally had squadrons such as VB-41 and VS-72.
In early '42 a directive was issued to delete the carrier's number from the fuselage sides, but at Coral Sea Leppla and Liska's Dauntless still had in white the full code: 2-S-12.
Then came the directive to change the white paint to black paint and to strip the mission designator. So one would see is a black 6 for example. Still after the Battle of Midway in the Atlantic Ranger's TBD's were still carrying in black lettering full codes: 4-T-7.
Next came in '43 Non-spectacular sea blue was added to the camouflage to create the tri-color scheme. And suddenly no one could read the black numbers so here come the white numbers again. But this time bigger. So for most of '43 and into '44 marking wise Naval aviation in the Pacific was pretty bland, just national insignias and white numbers plus maybe an LSO assist stripe on the tail
But then the number of carriers and air groups kept expanding. Fleet carries, light carriers, and jeep carriers. Oh my! So a new directive ordering the use of geometric shapes or other symbols came into use. So now some planes had this big white arrow painted, others got lighting bolts, or a shamrock even.
And the paint scheme changed again to sea blue overall in late '44. Followed by the introduction of the GG tail codes to replace the crazy shapes, this system is still used to this day.

In August 1945, Quartermaster Graves Registration unit was investigating missing airmen when the Mayor of Laubach stated that there was an incident in which "The pilot made a crash landing and then was shot by a man named Hoffman" The authorities discovered this individual was in a prison camp near Marburg.
Hans-Peter Keller (who was 14 years of age at the time and witnessed the affair) testified at the war crimes trial of the accused man named Hoffman. In his testimony, Keller stated the pilot parachuted to ground safely, but was apprehended by a German military person and a long-time member and official in the Nazi Party, the accused Hoffman. The two marched Mooney toward the town of Jubach where he would be turned over to the authorities. Hoffman left, went home, and returned wearing his Party uniform and carrying a revolver. As the trio moved on, Hoffman suddenly fired one shot into Mooney. Mooney staggered and Hoffman fired again. Mooney fell to the ground.
Hoffman retrieved a horse and wagon and carried the body to the village of Laubach where a pathologist confirmed the identity, entered in his report there were two gunshot wounds, and Mooney was then buried in the local cemetery with no marker at his grave.
Hoffman was tried, convicted of murder, and sentenced to be hanged. His appeal was denied and he was hanged at Landsburg War Crimes Prison in August 1946.
Mooney's father requested that the remains of his son be returned to the U.S. Captain William H. Mooney, Jr, now lies in Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia in Plot 137, Section 13.
