Stone-Breakers
Gustave Courbet

Courbet is considered to be part of the "Realist School," which tells me that art historians are just as rigid as the rest of us and are uncomfortable with outliers.

Summers in western Oregon tend to be cooler. I think for peaches you need uninterrupted hot weather for weeks or months, and we just don't get that here. Typically we'll get hot summer weather (into the 90s), but it only lasts for a few days, then it's back into the 70s.

93 I have trouble distinguishing between the Realist Movement, and the Arts and Crafts movement in regards to paintings. There seems to be a lot of overlap, and I don't know where the differences lie. My very favorite artist of the Arts and Crafts movement is Swedish painter Carl Larsson. I have many reproductions of his art in my home. He typically painted scenes of his family in his traditional home, circa 1900.

Can someone explain the differences in the two movements. Talking painting, not architecture.

Actually, what the lower level DHS officials have been instructing state and local law enforcement agencies is not that right wing extremists pose the same threat as jihadis, but that "white supremacists" pose a larger and worse threat than do jihadis.

In fact, that "white supremacists" comprise the most severe terror threat in the country by far. Not making this up. See the comments by Sebastian Gorka here:

That's not "rightist" thinking. That's delusional thinking. The guy wasn't a political terrorist. He was an outright mental case who belonged in the nut hut, and would have been in the nut hut if we still sent mental cases there, which we don't do any longer because of emanations and penumbras.

Let me just give you a synopsis: The is a conference of Muslims. Muslims who live openly in Norway. Muslims who don't see themselves as radical in any way. There are perhaps a thousand of them in this conference. The speaker is boasting that killing gays, segregating women - your typical moderate Muslim beliefs - are absolutely within the mainstream of Islam.

He asks for a show of hands of everyone who thinks that the punishment prescribed by the koran to kill gays should be enforced. Everyone raises their hands. Additional questions of the same nature follow regarding activities that Obama insists do not represent Islam, with the same result.

It actually destroys Obama's assertion that murder, violence and oppression are not within the mainstream of Islam.

Again, this is in Norway. The Muslims attending live and work in Norway, not in some Islamist country.

That on top of look how racist LAPD was (is?).

One thing that annoys me about this is how we're told we're never supposed to lump all black people together. But about 100 times so far I've heard the phrase "white people" or "the white world" implying of course that every single white person in Los Angeles is exactly the same. I find that most FB "friends" who are liberal are beyond conversations on facebook regarding facts, etc. They do not want to listen, they do not believe anything in the way of facts, rather it's all emotional.

It reminds me of after 9/11 when so many libs were running around crying ," Why do they hate us, what did we do to them to drive them to such extremes"

These people have been taught all their lives that someone else's behavior is the product of their own behavior. That if they were just kind or shared more, or tried to understand, the other little kid wouldn't "act out".

That same infantile, nursery school belief is nurtured and kept intact all the way into adulthood. They can't shake it at that point because they have surrounded themselves with the same infantile people who reinforce each other's delusions.

Looks like it's a civilian board populated with Muslims who lecture the feds to not use certain words ("jihad", etc. - like Jeh Johnson just informed us) and advise that we cannot do many LE things out of respect for the Muslim community. I grew up in Louisiana and had an attic fan. You would open the front
and back doors and let the air be sucked through. Eventually we got a
window unit and then upgraded to central air system. My schools had
ceiling fans.

239 156 Presumption of Innocence is a Misogynistic tool of the Patriarchy.

Every single thing the left used to fight for and insist on is now in their way as they attempt to impose a tyrannical religious system on the world.

Older houses were designed to catch cross-breezes. In an old house, rooms had at least two sides with windows. The only saving point of my 'modern' house is that I am on a corner with three sides -- with interior open I can get ventilation. Of course, if outside gets above 65, I get sweaty and unhappy, but having the breeze is nice.

314 You get used to the heat after a while.

You do up to a point; after a certain point its just crippling even when you're used to it. There's a reason the closer you get to the equator, the more common the concept of a siesta becomes. Hottest part of the day, you hide somewhere out of the sun.

Still, many older people insist that air conditioning is part of the problem with youth. Too much ease, too much hiding inside the house, not enough going out and exploring and playing. I don't want to just disregard that concern.

I simply have a well designed home for winter solar gain and summer sun protection. A design style that Frank Lloyd Wright dabbled in.

329 Since moving back to the upper Midwest, I never, ever complain about heat and humidity here (it's sunny with a pleasantly cool breeze today - perfect). First of all, I bitch all winter long about the cold. Secondly, if you haven't lived in the South you have no idea what heat and humidity really is. Even when we have a heat wave here, it never lasts that long. I remember a 6 week stretch in DC where it hit 100 every day.

I love summers here.

335 if you want to cut your AC costs, install a couple attic fans in your house...

they keep the temp up there down to ~ambient, so you're not heating your interior ceilings/transferring heat inside the living areas...

we don't even have AC, and we live in The Valley, like totally, where it's supposed to be 100+ over the weekend. the fans make all the difference in keeping the house livable.

Instead, each of you will be assigned an oak barrel to be slept in in rotating shifts. We have seen how the barrel causes fear and dismay- which is exactly what we are looking for.

338 Last year I put a new roof on my house and replaced the skylight in my bathroom. The old skylight was terrible and it felt like I had a magnifying glass concentrating the sun on my head during summer days. The new skylight is wonderful! The roof is a lighter color, which is supposed to cut down on the heat. I also installed a new more efficient HVAC system. Sadly, I didn't notice a drop in my electric bills last summer, but the new AC works much better and my house is now comfortable in the summer.

Yeah, that's a clue. Sort of like how water companies pressurize the hell out of the lines so that you waste 20 gallons just brushing your teeth.

Our lowest months bill is usually about $80 a month and might skyrocket to $200 a month in the hottest or coldest months. 4k sqft home. Lots of stuff running inside and outside.

There are companies that can actually calculate your load, based on an audit of number of motors, amps pulled, etc. I've dealt with them. They're not cheap. Top of my head, something doesn't add up.

Unless you're not mentioning the hydroponic pot factory in your basement, for obvious reasons.
