Overnight Open Thread (5-30-2016)

So I'm back...and pretty wiped out. This was a long three weeks - 1.5 weeks of work, 1 week of vacation, and 1 week of family business/hard physical labor. In the process I visited Tokyo, Yokohama, Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Shikoku. I'll fill you in on the details over the next few days.

Here's the onsen where I spent most mornings and evenings during the vacation phase of my trip. It was awesome.

Quote of the Day

As we all know, high school girls can defeat any enemy that doesn't have tentacles. But against kaiju they need a bit of help.

Ragnastrike Angels! Earth is invaded from space and nothing seems able to defeat the giant aliens, known as Fiarem. So as an emergency measure a group of high school girls are recruited as a special defense force. When given technomagic treatment they become 38 meters tall and can fight the Fiarem on even terms.

WeaponsMan on Happy Memorial Day

The dead are only as dead or forgotten as we allow them to be.

As readers of this blog certainly know, Memorial Day is not on occasion to celebrate those many of us who survive. At least, not in the USA. We've got a day for that, in the bitter month of November, for good and historical reasons. That's the day for those who returned upright and animate. This day is to honor the ennobled among us, the ones that did not. And so many of us vets are thinking about absent friends, today; it may not be an occasion for happiness.

We are about to argue the opposite.

Nobody died so that you can mope around bewailing his fate. Let us consider an alternative way to think about him, about them. Let us, rather, take comfort and find joy in the fact that they lived, however briefly; let us remember them not as they died in a flash of HE, that unforgettable sound of a rifle-bullet impact, or an unstoppable running-down on the operating table; but rather, as they live: full of life and life's joys, or even more honestly, life's passions.

Surely you can call up that friend, or relative, or friend's relative, in your mind. This was a person with a distinctive smile, a laugh, and a gait that you could spot in a throng at a hundred yards. Bring that picture into your mind, that man (or, perhaps, woman) in color and in three dimensions.

Now, take that fallen hero - for the foundation of our little world stands on the shoulders of these, and that makes them heroes if nothing else does - along with you. To the cookout, to the ball game, to the beach, to the water park.

Expect others to look at you funny, as you're attentive to the old friend's envy of your home or kids - or his mockery of your current state of physical fitness.

Don't be surprised if he takes the last hot dog or the last beer - or if he leaves it for you. Either way, that's just the kind of guy he was, wasn't he?

We have been bringing our dead friends to holiday festivities for some years now. We haven't told anybody, because we enjoy, most of the time, just passing as regular, sane, non-vet Americans. But now it's time to let the secret out of the bag.

...Anyway, when some smiling, secure, comfortable citizen looks at you and says, "Happy Memorial Day," look right in his or her eye, shake hands if it's suitable, and say, "Happy Memorial Day" right back. Say it like you mean it, because you're saying it for two.

And if you're sensitive to it, if you're really tuned-in, that pressure on your shoulder is a squeeze from a dead hand, telling you it's OK.

Happy Memorial Day.

Did the Cincinnati Zoo Really Have to Shoot That Gorilla?

Sadly yes. Once the gorilla had the boy and wouldn't let him go there were really no good options. Note that the gorilla dragged the boy around and was quite rough with him before the video showing him 'cuddling' the boy was taken.

24 Amazon's fraud department is pretty shitty too. Some asshole ripped me off for $60 by somehow getting into my account and sending gift cards to their email out of MY gift card balance.

Amazon recognized the theft, and basically all they did was disable my password and basically told me "yeh, you got ripped off, not our fault, you're out $60". Didn't even tell me if the fucker who ripped me off had its email address blocked after acknowledging the fraud.

Just about every large company will restore what was taken through fraud, but not Amazon. So if you have a gift card balance don't let it sit there.

And thanks, not only for a great ONT, but that last F-100 pic, gives me chills.

I remember as a kid, when F-100s were still front-line equipment, along with their other Century Series fighters.

And now we look back on F-100s, F-102s as wicked pilot killing anachronisms of nearly steampunk vintage.

We're barely past 100 years of flight, and it's truly hard to grasp how very far we've come.

If we can get rid of enough commies and FSA'ers in Congress, we can continue on, too.

But that's an iffy thing, these day.

43 The Amazon guy is full of it, he may have gotten scammed by an amazon affiliate who was listed on the sale page, so he wrote a negative review of the product not of the seller, there is a seperate feedback for that, he then is angry because Amazon will only refund his money (including shipping costs) rather than send him a replacement at the same price he leaped on. He can't figure out that Amazon's normally priced items are normally priced because they are marked up by intuit already before Amazon gets them.

He then like a drama queen demands to speak to a representative about getting more than a full refund. When he doesn't get the mythical manager he cancels his prime account as if he is expecting them to come crawl back to him. So the rep is freaked out, which is bad, but who knows what the tone of this has been like?

Now we all have crap days, but Amazon never ever fixed crap like this beyond returning your money yesterday. The whole sales contract was posted on the site for him to read on the sales page when he bought it. It seemed like an amazing deal he should have checked the not so fineprint.

I love the mules blaming Bush here.

Assume for the sake of argument the kid joined at 17.

That would mean he was in OSUT only during the reign of Chimpy in all likelihood.

Anyway PTSD is not why this guy went koo-koo for ko-ko puffs in all likelihood, he probably should have been on floor 7 of Martin Army Community Hospital b/c of underlying conditions.

He's been out of active service a bit IIRC so the guy averaged at worst a tour every two years, and that is assuming they were 12 month rotations not 6.

66 Can't believe I'm saying this, but... the new Monkees album, Good Times, is not unlistenable. Some good stuff. I was not a big fan - my little sister had all the albums - but they definitely had some good songs.

And Good Times is evocative, not just of the old Monkees' sound, but of the music of their heyday, before everything had to be cynical, depressing, and complicated. Some songs sound like they needed Davy Jones's voice. Thought I detected some little bits of tribute to other bands.

Some song titles:
I Was There (And I'm Told I Had A Good Time)
Birth Of An Accidental Hipster
Terrifying

I sure need better speakers.

72 24 Amazon's fraud department is pretty shitty too.

78 Why isn't the outrage at shooting the gorilla directed at the mother of the toddler? Story is that she was there with four small children and while she was busy with two the toddler walked away and crawled through the bars of the enclosure to see the water. 79 And Good Times is evocative, not just of the old Monkees' sound, but of the music of their heyday, before everything had to be cynical, depressing, and complicated. Some songs sound like they needed Davy Jones's voice. Thought I detected some little bits of tribute to other bands.

A few weeks ago was the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album. It's everything the critics praise it as and more. My only complaint is that every weepy emo band looked to Pet Sounds for inspiration

Brian and his band are doing a 50th anniversary tour performing the entire album in playlist order. He'll be in my town in September and I plan to go. Might be the last chance to see Brian Wilson the way that music artists are dying this year.

I can't believe the folks that are saying they want Idris Elba or Gillian Anderson as Bond, because they're tired of Bond being a white male. Maybe we should just throw gender and color out the window for all casting. Or maybe someone should write a good spy story and cast Elba or Anderson in it, if they want those actors to be seen on screen.

Although I suspect some of you might find a female Bond, getting it on with a Bond girl, kinda hawt.

123 The real problem with the ads is that they're being disingenuous -- if a website wants to put ads on that website, I might actually read them -- but for a website to allow Google to put ads on their website while still pretending they have editorial control is, if you'll pardon the technical term, bullshit. If the NYT were to link facsimile pages of their dead trees edition, nobody would bother blocking the ads.

But, no -- they want adaptive advertising....so if you price-check something for a friend, you get six months of ads for that thing -- even though you already have one. If you visit a risque website, you get six months of ads for penile enlargement products. You wonder how to navigate to an address in Las Vegas, you get six months of shilling for casinos.

In between pumping you for stuff you casually mentioned, the advertising companies are also relentlessly attempting to thicken their dossier on you. Google has more information on the average American than the Stasi ever had on East Germans. And they're attempting to use it to encourage all sorts of bad behaviours -- everything from drinking sugary sodas to overconsumption of alcohol; promoting gambling and loose morals; and -- possibly worst of all -- advocating for Democratic politicians.

And when you challenge the newspapers whose websites are loaded with this crap, they squeal "it wasn't us -- it's Adwords!!!"

202 Someone was saying that all the famous comic books are perpetually middle act. The origin was made before they knew they had a hit story, and the finale will never come because that would kill the cash cow.

James Bond has developed this problem. And to confuse and subvert the audience on the meta-level with a soft reboot seems to be the right choice.

Bond might be retconned as a GWOT vet, and I would be ok with it.

Interesting. Bond, at least as portrayed in the books, is a period piece, now. He was a WWII vet (or was working for MI6 in some capacity during that era), so, if he were a real person, and alive today, he would be in his eighties, at least.

I think one way to look at it is that "James Bond" is not a person, but a job description. Kind of like Canada's hangman used to be called, "Mr. Ellis".

Speaking of flamethrowers, can I offer a public service announcement? Car seats, upholstery, carpet, floor mats, and such; they will be burn like rocket fuel is they get ignited. Vinyl, synthetic fabric, urethane foam, fiber stuffing: all highly combustible, and the smoke/gases therefrom are very toxic. If your car catches fire, get out, and get your ass upwind.

This is prompted by the fact that I was "rendering" some old car seats in the burn barrel, and was struck by just how fast the soft stuff was consumed. less than 5 minutes, start to finish.

259 Alberta Oil Peon.

If you'll harken back to the days of yore, you can recall that the S.S. United States was specifically built so as to avoid combustibles wherever possible aboard ship.

Copious use of stainless steel, and the avoidance of wood paneling, fabric or wall papers, etc.

Given all that, how might the manufacturers produce an affordable car, with a minimum of excess flammable content?

There will always be some such, but the question is, how to minimize it, and do so in a way that still results in an affordable car?

Good question. They aren't doing asbestos they can, are they? (/Muldoon)

Leather will burn, but it takes a pretty hot fire to get it started, and it doesn't emit copious amounts of combustible gases like petro-based synthetics do. Wool is also somewhat fire-resistant. Or you could do the upholstery in Nomex, I guess, or treated cotton.

When we got up there to visit her, for our one hour per weekday, the nurse let us in, had a bad look on her face, so I knew something was very wrong. She said my mother was a in a full-blown psychotic state, hearing voices and hallucinating.

She resisted them talking her blood pressure and other vitals plus an EKG, but they got it. Then they tried to get her to eat breakfast, and she refused. The nurse tried to spoon feed her, and my mother just spat it out. They finally got her to drink almost all of an 8 oz. Ensure bottle.

She let us go back the room where my mother was, something that was against the rules. No visitors are supposed to be in the patients' rooms.

My father and I went in and took opposite sides of her bed. She had this terribly pained looking expression on her face. She recognized us, and then grabbed our hands with both of hers, one on each side She squeezed our hands tightly and held on, as if for dear life.

Her breathing was rapid and loud, as though she was in a panic. Actually, I guess she was, as I shudder to think what nightmare was playing out in her tortured mind.

So there we stayed for the whole allowed hour, her tightly holding our hands. That was pretty rough, and I felt so damn impotent, I'm useless, can't do anything to help her.

I carried one of my cousins and her husband up there to see my mother Sunday. She hadn't seen my mother since she descended into this awful state. I warned her it was going to be rough and to prepare herself.

She emailed me this morning telling me she made it back out the car, and then cried all the way home.

My mother is all my paternal side cousins' favorite aunt. They won't tell each other that, well their cousins, since they don't want to insult their mothers, but they've all told me that before. And now that cousin of mine yesterday just couldn't bear seeing her favorite aunt in that state.

The nurse said she thinks this is just a meds issue, some of the stuff having a paradoxical reaction, which they can do. She had a call in to the psychiatrist on call (it's Memorial Day, of course, and they're not all there), and he was going to try to evaluate and change the meds.

Well, sorry to bum everyone out, but that's the situation and it helps for me to write all this down, and in several places.

Publius.....never regret coming here and speaking. You've got a fine voice and a fine manner and you've been thoughtful and have contributed. You belong here, and deserve our fullest support.

It sounds to me that, within the bounds of what is allowed at the hospital, both you and your dad provided valuable support to your mom. She grasped your hands firmly -- whatever whirlpool of panic was engulfing her at the time, she knew your hands and didn't let go. While impotent to completely solve her problem, you shouldn't think you made no positive difference.

The coming week will require you and your dad to put forth more effort and be ever more tricksy at negotiating hospital bureaucracy -- and I have very specific advice for addressing the challenges to come: "be easy on yourselves". If you needlessly flagellate yourself for what has gone before, you'll be less ready for what is yet to happen. So far as this guy can see, you done good so far. Sleep well, get rested, get out there tomorrow and knock it out of the park.

I ask of Our Lord to assuage your fears and make that beautiful woman whole. I ask that you find peace and salvation within your fears.

Might the Mighty Hand of God find His way to your corner, so as to allow His beauty upon you.

Find not the ugliness of incongruency, but the beauty of Salvation within your ranks. Allow its blessing to find you. And find you well.

Might you find peace as chaos surrounds you, Good Sir. Might you keep your head as those around you lose theirs.

I ask God to find serenity within your soul. I ask Him to find you at peace as you question his very existence.

I ask for the beauty of commonplace touchstones that the both of you find in common.

In Jesus' Name, I Pray...

320 It's been a while since I dealt with Amazon customer service but the last time they F'd up in my favor, issuing me a refund instead of sending me a return mailing label, so I got me a $75 pair of snow boots that I don't fit in for free.

I know that around the holidays they have a few call centers up around NYC, but outside of that they seem to be outsourced at least 50% of the time.

I did, for the first time, have a really bad time with DirecTV, where the girl on the other end of the phone obviously was more into her cell phone and watching 90210 episodes than helping. She continuously tried to charge me for the free remotes. Thankfully I called back and got a nice lady from Brooklyn who helped me, gave me a 12 month credit, and had a laugh when she read that the original customer service employee was actually stupid enough to write in her call report all the things she had gotten wrong.

If she doesn't get any better in this particular hospital, I'm thinking about trying to take her somewhere else. Get second and third opinions and all that.

If it were me, I'd take her off damn drug they have her on that we could get away with, starting in reverse order they were added to her schedule.

She takes one for blood pressure and thyroid hormone/whatever that I think are required, do her harm to stop. She's on a damned statin, and IIRC, reducing endogenous cholesterol production can affect nerves, don't know about the brain. Well, just quickly googled -- depression and anxiety are claimed to be caused by statins.

But she's been on it for years. The newest one was Eliquis, the anticoagulant. I don't know if she really needs it now, it's been nearly 2 months since her surgery. WIth my hip, I think it was 6 weeks I was on the blood thinner.

Regarding statins -- I read somewhere once where they're not prescribed in the EU without a CoQ10 supplement. That said, people are on statins for years or decades and they're generally well-tolerated. Don't second-guess a decade of care over something that went haywire last year.

And, really -- get some rest. Fresh eyes will see more in the morning, where bleary eyes will just see more of the same.

329 For my grandfather's final illness, I kept getting confusing and contradictory signals from my grandmother. He was better, he was worse; things were grave, things were trivial. I finally pulled the plug and flew. I landed in Columbus, Ohio and drove to Parkersburg, WV. I was using a laptop with an experimental GPS device -- Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan weren't yet household words.

Because I knew he was in an ICU, I had my choice of two hospitals. He was in the first one. I got in and started wheedling access and information. Shortly after official visiting hours began, the ICU got a call that my grandmother wouldn't be promptly there when they opened.....because she was in the ER three floors downstairs. If I've ever had a moment when the clouds parted, a ray of light streamed down from the heavens, and angels sang -- that was it....if I'd have waited even for the next flight, it wouldn't have been timely to help her.

It was an exhausting, depressing, stressful, eventful few days -- but I was there when needed and did needful things.

334 The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) is a United States Federal Law passed in 1970 that was designed to provide a tool for law enforcement agencies to fight organized crime. RICO allows prosecution and punishment for alleged racketeering activity that has been executed as part of an ongoing criminal enterprise.

Activity considered to be racketeering may include bribery, counterfeiting, money laundering, embezzlement, illegal gambling, kidnapping, murder, drug trafficking, slavery, and a host of other nefarious business practices.

James Comey and The FBI will present a recommendation to Loretta Lynch, Attorney General of the Department of Justice, that includes a cogent argument that the Clinton Foundation is an ongoing criminal enterprise engaged in money laundering and soliciting bribes in exchange for political, policy and legislative favors to individuals, corporations and even governments both foreign and domestic.

359 Surprised to see the negative posts on Amazon customer service. My only dealings with them were very positive.

UPS once mis-delivered a 150.00 package. Of course, *their* records showed that they had left it on my front stoop, so the snotty UPS customer service witch washed their hands of any responsibility. And all but called me a liar.

I next called Amazon C/S and the very helpful young woman listened to my story and told me they would have a replacement package at my front door by the next afternoon. I knew this meant air shipment, which is expensive. Would've been different if this was Amazon's fault, but it was not. I told her this wasn't that urgent and 2 days ground would be fine, but she insisted.

I called Amazon at 6:00 pm and I had a complete replacement shipment at my front door at 10:30 the next morning, which is pretty amazing. Then I received a follow-up call from Amazon to be sure I had received it OK. Extra amazing.

As a postscript to this story, about 3months later I came home to find a battered, tattered UPS package on my stoop. It was the original, lost package. Don't know if whoever mistakenly received it had finally brought it by, or what.

I called Amazon and told them the whole story again and offered to return the duplicate shipment, since they had been so great about the whole thing and all, but the very nice representative told me to keep it.

365 My experience with Amazon follows W3's. Lost shipments replaced overnight and then not insisting late-arriving items be returned.

If I were a gamblin' woman I'd bet Pooja has already been sacked by Amazon. There's always one bad apple in a barrel but Amazon seems to do a good job of weeding them out.

HOWEVER...

Amazon's pricing and shipping structures are becoming increasingly difficult to fathom. If they don't get a handle on that it's going to cause them trouble.

I saw this "movie" in the late 70's during the peanut years. The F'n bastards are using all of the supplies to prevent having to buy replacement parts. They need that money to give to the FSA. By the time Reagan came in we had squadrons that counldnt fly, naval groups that couldnt go to sea, the Army couldnt do anything but paper drills.

I loathe democratics.

372 Got a question for you. Has anyone else noticed lately that the NWS seems totally incapable of delivering an accurate forecast?

Looking at our for the day I see a "Hazardous Weather Outlook". Click on that and get a four-para discussion of the weather. Final conclusion: "It might rain but the computer models don't agree, so we're just throwing our hands up."

374 The NWS hasn't been WAS for decades now. The OFA is a lot more accurate for long term stuff which has been influenced by politics of the AGW scam and they actually don't do local weather any more.

When you get local weather it is most likely being provided by either a corporate weather service or something like TWC or Weather Undergrund (which has been bought out by TWC).

My old utility used a corporate weather service under a contract for short term and long term predictions.

The worst part is that people might take such a candidate seriously. Splitting the Republican vote is not a path to anything but a Hillary Presidency... and that's exactly what some of the DC crowd want. Losing everything they got elected for is no big deal, as long as the press is nice to them, they get invited to all of the parties, and they have their cushy jobs.

"Independent", not "Third Party".

Varies. Texas is of course already past the ballot date. California requires 180k signatures, while other states require as little as a few hundred.

It's estimated it would require a million or so signatures to run a 50 state campaign, allowing for bad sigs, along with a number of lawsuits at this late date to open the ballot in some states.

____________________

It's really astonishing when you think about it. Hillary Clinton has been corrupt and dishonest and sneaky since she was Hillary Rodham, low-level Capitol Hill staffer. Fresh out of Yale Law, she wrote a memo suggesting that Richard Nixon should be deprived of his basic due process rights. Even the sleazy politician she worked for was shocked by Hillary's lack of ethics.

Then, as political spouse to Bill Clinton in Arkansas, Hillary leveraged her connection to Bill to get clients for the Rose Law Firm, where she worked in partnership with Web Hubbell and Vince Foster, both apparently as crooked as Hillary (or at least, both willing to aid and abet Hillary's criminality). Hubbell and Foster helped Hillary steal the Rose Law Firm billing records that proved Hillary's active participation in the crimes committed by the law firm's S&L clients. Hubbell eventually ended up going to prison (for other crimes), and Foster apparently knew (or feared) that he was headed for the same fate, and chose to eat a bullet instead. The real scandal of Foster's death was not that he was murdered, but that he committed suicide because he feared his participation in his and Hubbell's and Hillary's many crimes would cause him to end up in prison (like Hubbell).

And yet this chronically corrupt woman not only skated through all her criminal activity at the Rose Law Firm, and then at the Clinton White House, but she went on to repeat the same type of illegal activity (and the blatantly illegal destruction of the evidence of her crimes) as SOS. (Have you seen that the woman Hillary put in charge of her computer security at State had no actual computer science credentials, and her degrees were all from phony-baloney diploma mills? How do you think this woman was able to pass a government background check?)

It boggles the mind that Hillary Clinton, with her decades-long record of corruption, is now the leading contender for president.
