3 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, May 30, 2016, Memorial Day. On this day in 1806 Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel after Dickinson had accused Jackson's wife of bigamy. There had been a long history of amenity between Jackson and Dickenson. Dickenson was also a noted duelist so Jackson killing him was no small feat.

4 The border between SC and NC is being redrawn after hundreds of years and is creating havoc among numerous residents. I think that even with more accurate methods of surveying this is incredibly stupid. It serves no real purpose and I suspect there are a few well placed cronies who are benefiting from it while the common people along the border suffer.

I have no idea what prompted the re-survey but it is causing a lot of heartaches. I would bet that if all the States started doing re-surveys using more accurate GPS that there would be a lot more heartaches.

Back in the early 1800s stuff like insults to your wife were not considered trivial things. In fact, any insult to your honor was considered a very serious thing. People took their reputation seriously then.

45 Texas deadline has already passed for getting on the ballot.

In the next month or so, many state's deadlines will be closing.

It gets very difficult from here to mount a third party bid.. unless.. unless you hijack a party (green? ) that is already on the ballot.. but even the Green party is only on 31 state's ballots so far.

59 Decorating graves always hits me. We do our best to decorate the graves of our admittedly large family (Found something new, a veteran who must have served in the Mexican war, he would have been 7 for the war of 1812 and in his 60's for the Civil War.)

What always gets me is the long lines of ancient stones that obviously go undecorated. We do the best we can and clean the stones of grass clippings and weeds, but it does leave one feeling sad. Thankfully the local churches do a really good job of keeping the cemeteries mowed and cleaned up with donations.

Your

You

Your

We

Yes. Those killed in action or even veterans have the opportunity and honor to be buried in a national cemetery. I don't know the reason but my granddad had my uncle interred at Rock Island.

On my mom's side of the family here in NY, across the path from where some of her family are buried are three brothers and a cousin who have military-style bronze plaques at their family plot.

And with that, I will say. . .

88 Illegal rain and its barrels: oldest cause of human conflict, if you don't count l'affaire du'Cain et Abel, is "riparian rights," the whole body of precedents concerning water use. And the underlying common law of water use is different in the states west of big river than in those east of it. Other countries are even more confusing, because they are stuck with inferior rivers like the Danube, Dnieper and Nile.

You can render a rain barrel safe from mosquito breeding by use of a "mosquito torpedo," but be forewarned these little tablets are a chemical, and Mr County Health may not understand. Standing water is also an invitation to some other disorders TYPHUS, so, personal water storage demands personal responsibility, and in our current understanding of the Rights of Man and Citizen, that means no.

100 @92 Thanks for that. I'm annoyed by the memory of one of those stupid-man-in-the-street interviews a few years ago, where the troublemaker was asking what the Fourth of July meant. A talkative professional carer type opined him half to death about how "Well, it's for the veterans..."

We have Veterans Day for that. Until some one-worlder rolled them all up into Armed Forces Day, there were also special days for each of the branches. Memorial Day is for the dead, our honored dead. Real veterans will understand.

-----------------------------------------------------

Let's be charitable to Jay Cost (quoted here) and assume this isn't just a sad joke. It can't work this year because it never works, the ballot access laws conspire to make it impossible, the voters are pre-programmed to accept two candidates and are too stupid to handle more, and the cost of mounting an independent national campaign is way beyond even the dreams of commentators.

So, unless you have Mike Bloomberg or the equivalent candidate in mind (politically accomplished, with high name recognition and lots of lawyers under retainer, with the ability to self-fund), don't waste our time with this silly crap.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 30, 2016 06:07 AM (vvmPQ)

It doesn't now appear indiscriminate. It looks like a drug hit. A guy pulled up to an auto repair garage around 10:45 AM and was shot in his Mercedes a minute or so later. The buzz around here is that the garage either was itself a drug storage facility or was associated with one.

There was a LOT of gunfire -- http://tinyurl.com/jcgerkn

There is some interesting chopper footage of the site after the gunfight here (the 'deadee' can be seen slumped in his Mercedes) -- http://tinyurl.com/jhv4m7v

Although the news reports were all saying the shooting was random (subtly pushing the 'crazies with guns' narrative), the shooting appears anything but random. No race was mentioned in the news reports, so I suspect the perps were 'south-of-the-border' types. The news media of course ties itself in knots to avoid associating minorities with criminal activity, so they were pushing the "we don't know the motive, must be a random shooting' meme. It certainly worked on the Uber riders I picked up near the crime scene. It took me forever to reach their house as the cops had a huge area blocked off around the crime scene. The area is generally very nice, very 'upscale' and all that.

It looks now like some cartel folks were just takin' care of business on a Sunday morning, doing the assassinations that Americans won't do.

Anyway, just my opinion. I may be all wet.

136 Just wanted to share one of my all-time favorite quotes

"How many a time have I stood watching the toads mating, or a pair of hares having a boxing match in the young corn, and thought of all the important persons who would stop me enjoying this if they could. But luckily they can't. So long as you are not actually ill, hungry, frightened or immured in a prison or a holiday camp, spring is still spring. The atom bombs are piling up in the factories, the police are prowling through the cities, the lies are streaming from the loudspeakers, but the earth is still going round the sun, and neither the dictators nor the bureaucrats, deeply as they disapprove of the process, are able to prevent it."

Corps Arty has moved so well up we had to displace our CP. This time to a nice forward slope about 5000 yds from Velletri. Our front most elements are still not within 2000 yds of the town. We can hear the MG's and machine pistols banging all times of day and night. Progress is still forward on all fronts, but very slow. 36 Div jumped off on a right hook at Velletri from a line near 3d Div. Object to isolate and reduce Velletri. Attack was going well with very little opposition at last report.

Velletri is about 18 miles inland from Anzio and sits at the foot of the Alban Hills, the commanding high ground from which the German artillery kept the Allies pinned down at the beachhead. God bless all those who served and died, at Anzio and all other theaters.

244 With this lull in the action, let me repeat the story of my father that I've imposed on y'all almost every Memorial Day for the last several years:

If you've seen 'Band of Brothers', you've seen the story of my father - same times, same places, same battles. He and his comrades fought their way through France and Belgium and at the Battle of the Bulge, my father's unit was surrounded and their commander decided to surrender. My father and one of his comrades decided they didn't want to spend the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Germans and they decided to risk sneaking through the German lines back to the allied lines. They made it after three days and nights in snow and freezing temps. My dad's legs were froze and he was sent back to England where they debated taking his legs. Fortunately, they managed to save his legs and they grafted his toes together to restore circulation in his feet. They stayed that way through the rest of his life. He led a relatively normal life though he suffered complication of his frostbite.

A back story to this is that the American planners were so confident of the outcome of the war at the point of the Battle of the Bulge, that they were already planning on using up stockpiled supplies and giving troops minimal kits. My dad told me that the troops in his unit were not issued overcoats or overshoes (galoshes they were called at the time) and were given minimal ammunition. My dad said that he had been issued five rounds of ammo. If you remember, an entire division - ~26,000 men - surrendered virtually at the start of the German push. The commanding officer of that division was soundly trashed by the military and the press at the time, but the truth is that he'd had little choice.

They are saying local property taxes will have to be paid in both States with the amount apportioned. And the 19 people who were in SC but are now in NC will pay higher property taxes.

I see that now. Shame because it takes away from the message since there were real actions that would be considered even more badass.

The one to me would be the Silver Star citation from Iraq where a convoy was ambushed on a narrow street where insurgents had a firing trench in front of the convoy . The soldier ordered his driver to drive straight on to the trench and attackers. The Humvee crashed into the trench where he exited and commenced to killing the insurgents down the trench. When his m14 was empty he picked up an insurgent AK and continued to clear the trench.

I don't know why he wasn't awarded the MOH.

265 Off to visit my FIL. In January of 1942 he was drafted out of college and spent the next three years in the Army for a bit and then the Air Force, as a bomber pilot.

He returned to college as a 23 year old sophomore with his buddies (after two weeks off) and, since the schools wanted these grown men to graduate asap and make room for the next group, he went to school essentially non-stop for the next eighteen months. So high school>everything great for a few months>war>school and, finally, two months off at age 25 before starting all over again.

I am very grateful he did what he did and especially grateful he survived! See y'all later.

268 MSM is the center of America hating.

One example: The media got almost everything wrong about the ambush involving Jessica Lynch.

Sgt. Donald Walters was the one who fought until he was out of ammo, wounded in four places, then captured by Fedayeen, and executed with two shots to the back while a prisoner. His covering fire saved a number of American lives. Even the Fedayeen admired his bravery. The media never mentioned his name.

The media hero PFC Lynch had her gun jam, and she was knocked unconscious early in the battle. She was brave in captivity, as was PFC Patrick Miller. The media obsessed over her.

282 Eric Allison, LT, USN
Ken "Slim" Pickens, LT(jg), USNR

Both with HC 11 attached to the USS Camden, AOE-2.

Killed on the way home from WestPac, August 16, 1991 when a blade detached from the front rotor assembly of their CH-46 Sea Knight, nicknamed "Sideflare 62".

We were 4 days from reaching San Diego where we would detach the airdales en route to the Camden's home port in Bremerton, WA.

Ken was fresh out of the Naval Academy and flight school and Eric was almost home from 3 straight 6 month deployments because of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Eric's wife surprised him by showing up in Guam when we pulled in for a couple days on August 13.

RIP.

294 Last week I was scouring YouTube for links to Bob Dylan performances in honor of his 75th birthday. I also found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7Yqj-QzwZE

It's gospel singer Regina McCrary talking about her experiences recording "Slow Train Coming" and also serving as a backup singer with Dylan on his 1979 tour. That tour was controversial because some fans were outraged that he played exclusively religious songs and ignored his more famous older songs.

This video has more to do with Christianity than with Dylan, but she tells some good stories.
