ONT 5/29/16 - You're only as good as your Tools edition. [krakatoa]

The long sojourn is over. Your deliverance is at hand. The cows are coming home to roost. Starting tomorrow, you will be graced with the inimitable presence of a tanned, rested and fully operational Maetenloch.

I would hope that the last 3 weeks have reawakened in each of you a respect for Maet and his relentless nightly presentation of quality content for the low low price of your choice of either an everlasting soul or a shot of Val-U-Rite.

Just in case it has not, you have me for one more night to remind you of the void that exists in the ONT without Maet.

Before we proceed, please take the time to properly thank those who stepped up to fill in.* In no particular order: WeirdDave, Neidermeyer's Dead Horse, Misanthropic Humanitarian, Slu, and of course, CDR M for never abandoning his weekend post in the first place.

They were asked for and delivered yeoman's work, and I want to give a particular shout out to Slu for going the extra mile even though I thought I'd made it clear that the dress code specifically called for tops as well.

MATT DAMON is reprising Jason Bourne.

I can't deny I've enjoyed all the Bourne flicks, so I'll probably watch this one, albeit not in a theater.

Nobody talks much about the Bourne Legacy with not MATT DAMON, but for my money, I enjoyed it almost as much as the first. I really dig the idea of exploring the Bourne space, so-to-speak, and I found the animating aspect of Jeremy Renner's character to be pretty compelling -- what would you do to keep from falling back into the veil of severely impaired intellect?

Plus,

I tested my Mom's gun this weekend -- I'd bought her a Taurus PT-111 Millennium years ago. It's on the recall list, but I couldn't duplicate the scary accidental discharge issue that was found in the 24/7.

Even so, I'll package it up and send it back to them for inspection & repair or replacement.

If you own one of the pistols in the class, here's the site with information on how to proceed.

This ONT brought to you by:

I suspect the guy that can just shake his tried to be his own gunsmith or got really, really, unlucky.

Remember the movie came out less than a year after 9/11. In my opinion they could have updated the story so that Bourne's mission was to flush out Osama Bin Laden.

She wouldn't initiate any conversation, but would respond to questions and statements. But in such a weak, timid voice, it was just pitiful. She actually initiated some conversation today.

And she still saying strange things. I asked if she eaten any supper (she's not been eating much, and it's a big worry), and she said no. It was way past time, and I said asked, "You mean they haven't brought you anything?"

She said, well they brought me something and said it was supper, but I don't think it was supper. And she wouldn't believe it was Sunday. Telling lies about what day of the week it is, she thinks.

Searching AoSHQ has never been easy, but it got harder after the semi-conversion from minx.cc to acecomments.mu.nu -- not to mention the detour into port 1080.

If you have a desire to search AoSHQ comments that lasts more than four hours, you should probably consult a shrink.

102 Margarita and Bourne are something of a joke in my house. I saw the first movie because the whole family wanted to see it so I went. HATED it. Then the same thing happened with the second. HATED, HATED it. Begged the villains to kill the twerp for real, for good, forever.

Every time one of those movies is on TV, you can bet either Mr. DeVille or one of the kids will turn it on just to torment and laugh at me. Ha, ha, ha.

When the Jeremy Renner movie came out, my son insisted we ALL go for his birthday. Ha, ha, ha.
But the joke was on him because I actually liked that one.

The difference was that I actually cared about the Renner character; I could feel his pain and understand his motivation. I wanted him to live and succeed in his quest.
But Jason Bourne's narcissistic, existential angst just annoyed the hell out of me. I wanted him slapped like a mosquito.

My dentists are not rich. They are the third owners of the practice since I have been going there, and I think the 2nd owner charged 'em an arm-and-a-leg for the practice....they may still be making payments. In the meantime, they've been losing clients -- not because of the skill of the principal dentist in dentistry, but from a lack of business acumen.

Or, in greater detail, because they surrendered to the sort of business acumen you get in one-hour seminars from hucksters. "A! B! C! Always Be Closing!!!!" -- which, in fields like dentistry, gets you clients that vote with their feet.

Uncle has lasted longer in his fight with pancreatic cancer than anyone has reason to hope for. Apparently chemo treatment has now rendered it operable, but...he's too weak for surgery. And his heart kept racing for day on end.

So this week he had a pacemaker put in, and I guess they actually turned off the signal from his heart. If he can gain enough weight, they'll operate on the cancer.

171 Robert Ludlum wrote potboilers. If you wanted literature, you should have purchased some.

It's like reading Brad Thor books. You don't go there for the smooth and elegant prose. You go there for the balls-to-the-wall wild and crazy action, brawn and, occassionally, the sex.

Some of the twists are spectacular, but they are not going to be spectacularly written.

It is rather like the distance between a comic book and The Idiot. It is a story told by manly men in a sub-literate context. It is, in the shorter version, entertainment, i.e. summer reading.

172 Steck.... on a Ford Certified Pre Owned F-150, a good average to discount would bottom out at about $2,000 off their asking. And you'll probably have to wrassle a bit for that.

If you're working with them late in their day (not yours....theirs, and they work into the night), on the last day of the month, you can likely get 'em down to $2,500 discount, just to make their unit counts.

All said, I'd think that will leave them about $1,000 to $1,500 profit on the sale, not counting any F&I or other "back end" such as extended warranties. Do NOT pay for a "sealant package", as that's just a pure rip off.

If they've loaded it with window tint, pin stripes, etc....just look at 'em and tell 'em, well, that was a bad idea for 'em wasn't it?

Especially if they're lining up the financing in the back, that's extra profit for them, so don't sweat their "pain" at the loss on tint and stripes.

Depending on how much you're putting down up front, or how much your trade is worth, you might want to consider "Gap Insurance", if you're financing at or above 60% of the sale price of the unit. It's cheap, and it keeps you from owing a balance if it becomes an insurance total.

Otherwise, make sure the truck has the specs you want, and buy with some confidence.

The factory Certified Pre Owned programs are for the most part, well worth the price of admission.

Or maybe his defense is she was asking for it?

All the macho stereotypes.

My rule of thumb was that if a woman made me want to hit her, I got out of the situation stat. Cause eventually I figured it might happen. And I can't let myself risk that degradation to my honor.

That is what they call a "deep cleaning", they numb you up in quarters and go to town. Costs about $800. Had it done one time after a 4 year absence, just do a regular annual cleaning now. They wanted me in 2x year, but since I now brush 2x day, floss, Water pik and mouth wash daily I don't need that.

Nah, that's just where they start berating you for not flossing enough.

Perky assistant? Perhaps you need 2x/week house calls to correct your flossing technique.

I am absolutely CERTAIN there are perky dental hygienists making money off house calls.

Or maybe I just have an incredibly filthy mind.

181 Thanks, everyone. I think I mentioned it before here, but the official diagnosis from the psychiatrists is "Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features". I guess that means the psychosis is a feature, not a bug of the depression.

Well, in reading all I could about that, it does fit my mother's condition to a 'T'. The psychosis here is the delusions about doing awful things, and the irrational guilt about doing those nonexistent things.

And depression with psychosis is the worst kind, I believe, or close to it. There is absolutely no sign of dementia or cognitive decline at all, they say. It's just mood. And it happened so fast. I believe it is the after-effects of the knee surgery, the anesthesia (it wasn't general, which is the most risky), or that major inflammation affecting the brain thing. They can't rule that in or out, really. Her family doctor thinks that's what it is himself.

My father has pulled some stunts this week, actually, being so distracted and worried about her. He locked himself out of the house one day. He hadn't got a spare key made to hang out in hidden spot yet since we had to change the locks a couple years ago. So I had to break in the house. We managed to take a storm window down, then break a small hole in the pane glass just large enough to get a punch in there and turn the window lock.

That was lucky. So, all I had to do was cover that little hole with duct tape, and didn't have to run up and get a new pane and clean out the old glaze and redo it. That will have to be done, but it can wait and doesn't look too noticeable.

And then the day after that, he locked himself of the old pickup putting gas in it. The newer ones, since some date, won't allow you to lock yourself out if the keys are in the ignition, I don't think. So, someone was kind enough to drive him home. Off with the spare key we went, and we're lucky we found it.

And then I had cooked something for him, and told him to just warm it up for lunch. Well, luckily I got back in there in time. He'd left one of the eyes on, and it was about to burn. Just within a hair's breadth of completely drying out and then getting way too hot and making a mess, or worse a fire.

And I can't really complain, because I've pulled a couple of little stunts myself, being preoccupied. Not that bad, but the same thing.

186 publius (not Breitbart publius):

My parents have been married for 61 years. They are inseparable. They bicker and argue like it was their job. They are also 86 years old, and my dad is failing after his stroke and his prostate cancer. OTOH, they are both in fine spirits. My mom can no longer remember why she was so pissed off the entire time she was raising kids.

I used to be sure that my dad would just cash out on some trail somewhere, since he took up mountain running, but after the stroke, he is limited to about two miles a day. He is frail but not dead yet.

When he goes, and it will be before mom, I give her about two months, and then she dies of a broken heart.

Sometimes lives are only just so long, and so long as there are good parts (and there always are), it was most likely a life well-lived. Letting go of it is very difficult, but also most necessary. Everything that lives will die, and it isn't hard on the one who goes first, but on those who go later.

I think acceptance is the key, and it is always hard-won.

Fight the good fight, and when it is time, lay down arms. Life is a blessing, and sometimes death is, too.

Meanwhile, prayers aimed in your direction. You are officially added to my rosary this fine evening, sir.

Houston shooting

At 11 am, shooter goes to a detailing shop, and kills a 50 year old man

All hell breaks loose, shots are fired at witnesses, three of them are shot

Cops arrive, two of them are shot. Several shots at the windscreen of the cop cars. Police chopper arrives on scene, it gets shot 5 times. People driving by on the street get their cars shot up.

One shooter shots the other shooter. Unclear if they were in a shoot out, if one is a bad guy and one is an armed citizen, or if they are both bad guys. In any event, one shooter kills the other shooter. Then SWAT arrives and shoots that shooter. He is in the hospital and talking.

In the meantime the bomb squad was called to detonate something in one of the shooters car. The FBI has been called in

And they haven't released anybody's name. Not even a physical description

I think as an industry there is a lot of fear about printed braces. On the other hand I think the huge cost of dental work is mostly because of insurance bonding and complaince.

Funny story: for me the worst part is the numbing injections. I hate needles the way AtC hates face-sized spiders; I'm always afraid that I'll flinch and the damn thing will break off in my gum. She always had a little depression, but it became crippling, along with massive anxiety, but not dementia. She was in & out of hospitals for a year. What finally cured her was ECT - electric shock therapy. I know how it sounds, I was very scared to go ahead with it, but faced with the prospect of her staying in that state & in the hospital for for God knows how long, we went ahead with that treatment. And it was a miracle. She completely turned around, almost overnight. You should look into it, talk to her doctors about that option.

233 202 Actually, the deep cleaning is called "scaling" and it should be done two quads (left and right) at a time. How do I know this? I'm going back for the second set of four cleanings on Thursday. I had it done once before, but that was about ten years ago. Listen to the hygenist!!! She's right about regular maintenance!

Funny story: for me the worst part is the numbing injections. I hate needles the way AtC hates face-sized spiders; I'm always afraid that I'll flinch and the damn thing will break off in my gum. I told the hygenist that and she said, "Oh, we train for that. It's more common than you think." Great. I can't wait to go back....

Posted by: Jenk at May 29, 2016 11:25 PM (OtryE)

I agree about the injections -- which is why I've had three crowns done without anesthetic and just had four amalgam fillings replaced with resin last month -- without anesthetic. Besides the "no needles in your mouth" thing -- after you're done, you bounce right back and don't have to worry about chewing up the inside of your cheek for the rest of the day.

An Ex-GF's Explorer got the electric window stuck open, where the driving cog over-ran the end of the gear that raised the window. I pulled the lining off the door and fished around to see what the issue was - it wasn't electrical since the motor was trying to raise the window, the gears were just jammed, and there was possibly a bit of grit in there too.

Finally I sent the GF into the house to get me something so she would neither see me do it or start yelling at me for doing it, I used a chunk of wood against the bolt head that held the axle for the gear, and rapped it soundly with a hammer while holding the "raise" switch in to make the motor work. That was enough of a shock to let the gear jump back into place and raise up correctly.

I hope you have a garage or a covered space.

Somehow the notion of a needle breaking off in my gums seems tolerable to me. Not great, you understand, just tolerable. What freaks me out is the idea of having eye surgery. I cannot imagine holding my eyes still for that, and my fear is that I would look in some other direction while the surgeon was scalpel-deep in my retina. Like I could hardly help it. If someone says "hold your eyes still, and don't look in either direction," how long could you do it? What if someone breaks a vase or something, off to the side.

I got a chance to ask an actual eye surgeon about that once, and he had two responses. One, they give you some sort of drug that makes you less inclined to do that sort of thing. Two, and this is one they don't much talk about, if they get a twitchy-eyed patient, they will actually sew some sort of disk into the eyeball to keep it still.

That really did not help.

There is a whole lot of home repair that really wouldn't be too bad if you didn't have to do it in the walls of a house in which you are living.....but medicine takes that to extremes. As the saying goes, "it's like doing a regular engine rebuild on an airplane engine....with the engine running.....at 35,000 feet...." A whole lot of stuff doesn't sound so bad if you could take a week to do it on a bench somewhere. If they could take your eye off somewhere for a while, give you a sexy patch for the meantime, then bring it back and plug it in next Monday, eye surgery would be boring.

I did once have a young, female, Japanese dentist as a sub. She had me back in her cleavage at one point to use the UV thingummy to cure the resin fillings , but she bobbled the syringe pass numbing me up and both of the fillings she put in fell out. *sigh*

It did make me realize that the dentists do a good amount of prestidigitation to keep the syringe below the level of the chin and keeping the patient from noticing it.

290 I have had eye surgery done twice, for strabismus, which is essentially "lazy eye". They detach certain muscles from the back side of the eyeball, and reattach one with more tension, and the other with less, to balance them out.

Done under general anaesthetic; no big deal. Eyes feel itchy for a week or so until the stitches dissolve. Problem is, eventually the problem returns.

I once woke up after surgery. Yes, there was an IV into the back of my hand. But there was also something else, something I had never heard of. It's called a "Central Line." It's a freaking IV into your jugular vein. Really. I had to walk to an testing room that was a ways away, dragging my IV pole, and wondering what would happen if the darned thing caught on something and it ripped out.

297 The hygienist at the dentist in the town I used to live in was a real guilt-monger. I'd go in for a cleaning and she'd work me over psychologically like a priest in confession. The purple stuff to show where I missed flossing. Yes, I know my teeth need cleaning: THAT'S WHY I'M HERE IN THIS CHAIR TO GET MY TEETH CLEANED. Stop shaming and start scraping.

More recently I had to get a crown put on, and my usual dentist was on vacation so I got the new partner. The new partner is a woman who looks like she's young enough to be my daughter, with small hands (a plus when both she and the assistant have both of them jammed in my mouth at the same time). And a top that wasn't buttoned as high as it might have been. She has nice taste in lingerie.

I'm outright phobic. It's like a live rattlesnake sitting on my chest while a needle is in, whether I can feel it or not -- best thing to do is tell me when you're clear so I can start recovering (don't lie -- I start by brushing things away).

Having suffered from Obstructive Sleep Apnea for a number of years, I was used to my blood oxygen level getting into "dain bramage" territory, and it often freaks technicians doing a blood draw when I go rigid and stop breathing for longer than they expect people can.

If someone expects to start a drip with Ringer's Lactate and lackadaisically debate what else they should do, they're going to have real problems with me. Any drip is going to have to be 50% happy juice or I will dive out a window to avoid it.

325 While mowing, I had the tip of a pine needle embed itself in my eye. Mostly it was just irritating, except that I could feel the eyelid scraping over it.

This was on a Saturday, and I was leaving for Europe on Wednesday. I hied me off to a Doc-In-A-Box.

There, an female Asian Doc took a look, and said, "Yes, we need to get that out."

So I'm stretched out on a table, she puts deadening drops in my eye, puts on gloves and a mask, and says "Don't blink". Okay. So then I see this needle closing in on my eye and instinctively I reached up and grabbed her wrist and asked, "You have done this before, haven't you?"

She laughed, and assured me that she had done it dozens of times. She picked the little bugger out of there, slapped a patch on, and three days later I was off to Brussels, sans patch.

After an hour or two I just waited for exhaustion to take its course and fell asleep. To make matters worse, all they would feed me for the first twelve hours was Jello. I hate that shit! I'm Catholic, not Lutheran...!

I also remember the needles I used when I had to microchip animals; the beveled edge of the needle looked like an AK barrel only smaller and without a front sight....

Without anesthesia, there's the precision cleanup -- a tiny drill that occasionally has stabbing pain.....but then, there's the roughing tool that ensures the filling will bond properly. Not only does it frequently hit the tender spots of the drill, but it vibrates your head in the process.

The 30th of May is Memorial Day; a day set apart to honor those who were the ultimate sacrifice to our Republic -- those who believed in these United States to the point of laying down their lives in its service. It is not about the medal-flinging Secretary of State or the red diaper POTUS -- though both will undoubtedly attempt to make this day about themselves. It is not about celebrities or politicians. It is about the people of this nation who have risen to the test, put forth blood and treasure, and suffered devastating losses....while politicians, pantywaists, poltroons, academics, and media flacks have scoffed.

We do not forget on other days -- there are other times with a pause, a sigh, a tear.....but on this day, let us all be stalwart in remembering those who answered our nation's call -- and ready ourselves to do likewise at need.

WD has said he'd reprise my Memorial Day post, tomorrow. And so, I'll hope you'll give it a read, and contribute a comment.

Might be the single best thing I've ever written, and it's right in line with your #360.

So, tonight, to sign off, I ask you all to stand, and with me raise your glasses.

We drink now, to Absent Comrades, be they Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coastie and not forgotten, the Merchant Marine.

To their honor, SAAAL-UTE!

I was thinking it looked bad for Depp, until I saw LAPD's statement. And I agree she is creepy. From the pictures the Daily Mail has, she has a preference for militant lesbians. Which makes her marrying Depp seem very odd.

Veterans from wars from WW2 onward come and offer testimony and prayers for the fallen, as do the patients themselves.

The VA suits don't like the prayer part. It makes them nervous. But the vets, volunteers, and medicos do it anyway. Heh.

373 The nice hygenist at my dentist would just lean in and pin you -- oh so gently -- with a boob. You couldn't squirm or anything because that would rub and draw attention to the contact. And, y'know, there are built-in functions -- it's calming, it's soothing, you relax....it's not even sexual, it's more like when you pick up puppies by the nape of their neck and they go limp.

I think she monitored it by observing patient salivation.

Posted by: cthulhu at May 29, 2016 11:59 PM (EzgxV)

So, Bebe.....ever noticed that people get very still and tranquil when touched lightly with a boob? Is it only guys, or both sexes?

I actually had an experience going the other way -- while in the non-girlfriend flirtatious stage, I had a later-gf rest her boob on my hand on my car door.....and, while we chatted, I stirred things around enough to get some reaction. Later in the conversation, she asked if I was aware of the situation -- I grinned, and said, "of course."

The fact is that humans are social animals and need to rub up on each other to function properly. The various perversions pushed by the left exist to alienate us from each other.

All those rows and rows of headstones. Each one a story, families heartbroken, lives lived but futures cut short. Hard to see without choking up.

That's the same effect with the dental hygenist -- you can't pull back because you're in a dental chair and it would be obvious, so you're effectively pinned-in-place. And, then, you start thinking, "it's kind of nice sitting there.....it relieves my stress....there's a friendly warm-spot on my chest.....I'll just zone out now......

I didn't really appreciate "built-in functions" until I observed a border collie that had been raised away from other dogs round-up a group of human children and tend them at a park.

392 You want tools? I invite you here. The dearly departed mr. creeper was a machinist who never met a tool he didn't like. He also never met a tool he put away. Everything landed on the workbench...leftover hardware, tools and the occasional extraneous part left over from and assembly. My obsessive-compulsive son-in-law has been sorting tools and hardware on the bench for weeks.

The good news is, if you need a 15/64" crescent wrench we've got you covered six ways to Sunday. Star drivers? What size did you need? 5/16" carriage bolts? Two dozen of them in the drawer, all labeled nicely and neatly.

Tape measures! They overflowed from one drawer to the next. All the screwdrivers wouldn't fit in one drawer so they're separated by head.

I just have one question...why did they leave it all here? What do they think this ancient broad is going to do with it?

I'll share.
