28 Sort of glad I did my zillion miles of global air travel before the current sardine-can seating, "security", and idiocy like dogs/pigs/etc. being allowed in the passenger area.

Plus I was immunized by doing a fair number of flights on Scare-o-Flot, or the various Baby-Flots that followed the break-up of the USSR. Epic stories, including - yes - chickens on the plane, in the passenger area (think Peruvian mountain bus, but passengers are taller and blue-eyed). And that was the loooong flight from Moscow to Vladivostok.

31 Ugh, that totally reminds me of a former colleague. She wore traditional Indian attire, including sandals, all year round. Nice woman. However, during meetings she would pick and tear off the calluses on her feet. All the time. Was especially rough for meetings where food was served.

32 And then again, people are not awful.

One of the last trans-oceanic flights I was on (can't recall which), a kid about 10 or so was airsick, wasn't being watched, and sort of projectile-vomited, very slightly fouling a few passengers in the immediate vicinity (including me).

The mother was mortified and desperately apologetic, the flight attendant was sort of the same way - and all the passengers affected were laughing and reassuring the kid and the mom that there was no problem.

Sort of a stark example of just how easy life can be if people stay calm and put their best foot forward, no matter the circumstances.

(flight attendant was rather generous with free booze and snacks to the affected passengers for the rest of the flight)

Posted by: rhomboid at May 29, 2016 01:13 PM (QDnY+)

33 I am also minded of the suggestion from someone . . .

If your plane lands anywhere other than it's expected destination, you should be prepared to walk over broken glass, jagged metal and possibly things that are on fire. Choose footwear appropriate to these conditions.

34 "Ego." "Self-interest." "Blinded by the spotlight." "It's become all about him." "Almost inciting violence."
These are some of the words Hillary Clinton's supporters at her rallies this week in California had for Bernie Sanders as he escalates his fight for a Democratic presidential nomination that is, mathematically, virtually out of reach for him.

Yeah, Hilldog has no ego, self-interest, or spotlight problem.

47 Years ago on a long flight home from the Middle East, I had to sit one of the two side seats in a 2+5(7)+2 configured aircraft. The middle seats were full of rows of pre-teen Hasidic kids and their minders. My seat mate was a throughly annoyed Arab in garb with sandals.

The Aeroflot rule is that pilots are strictly forbidden to drink within 24 feet of the aircraft.

I'm going out on a limb and saying Aeroflot had a lot of airliners where the passenger cabin was more than 24 feet in length.

Depends on whether you're measuring from the outside of the aircraft skin, or the pilot's seat.

110 Plus I was immunized by doing a fair number of flights on Scare-o-Flot, or the various Baby-Flots that followed the break-up of the USSR. Epic stories, including - yes - chickens on the plane, in the passenger area (think Peruvian mountain bus, but passengers are taller and blue-eyed). And that was the loooong flight from Moscow to Vladivostok.
Posted by: rhomboid at May 29, 2016 01:08 PM (QDnY+)

Internal flights in the USSR were memorable. My favorite story: on a flight from Ukraine back to Moscow, where everyone was bringing all the produce etc. they could manage, the (doubtless ex-Red Air Force) pilot descended into Vnukovo airport (the one for internal flights) like he was flying a Stuka. Some woman had a string bag with a bunch of honeydew melons that broke free and rolled up the aisle, as passengers stuck their feet out to stop them.

124 Long international flights are the bomb. And people take off their shoes all the time during 12-16 hour flights (like from O'Hare to Beijing). I know I do (but leave on my socks!).

And when you are leaving, the passenger compartments are a wreck. Food, discarded stuff everywhere.

People are pigs, really.

A lot of foreigners seem to have a very different idea of what, if anything, constitutes personal space.

I have noticed that people from India have to be told that Americans do not like people standing or sitting right next to them and tend to react badly when somebody who is apparently uncomfortable unless they are an inch or two away from somebody else. They do seem to learn quickly but they don't seem to pick it up on their own unless somebody tells them.

129 I almost always fly Southwest know, and with the early bird boarding (so worth the extra $15) I get an aisle seat around row 8, which seems to be the point at which people decide "Well, I'm not getting a seat near the front, so I'll check what's open farther down" = empty middle seat unless fully booked.

One recent flight a fight almost broke out when a guy in the 2nd row attempted to save the middle seat for someone boarding later and another guy was adamant about getting it despite there being wide open rows in the back half of the plane. The flight must have been frosty fir those two.

132 I'm combing through a lot of old emails as part of my loooong process of updating the Mohammed Image Archive.

In past years, Muslim troll/hacker types often signed me up (i.e. used my email address) for various Muslim religious advice newsletters -- presumably in an attempt to convert me, I guess.

Anyway, I saved some of these newsletters because they're just so absolutely insane and they reveal what jaw-dropping evil and lunacy lie at the heart of Islam.

Often the format is like an advice columnist, except instead of Dear Abby, it's famous clerics issuing fatwas or clarifications about various topics and questions sent in by readers.

One newsletter contained the following tidbits, which I just had to share with you all before deleting the email:

A reader asked "What happens to the children of Unbelievers if they die before reaching adulthood? Do they go to Paradise (that is, Muslim Paradise), or Hell?"

Well, the clerics said it was a complicated question, because it had been answered in different ways in different hadiths over the centuries. But the general consensus was this:

The good news -- Yes, the children of non-Muslims do in fact go to Muslim Paradise when they die.

The bad news? They go to Muslim Paradise so they can be the slaves of the true Muslims there.

Ah, yes, little-known Muslim Facts that everyone in the media and academia sweeps under the rug. In Islamic belief your children -- you, the people reading this, and every non-Muslim child in the world -- gets to spend eternity as slaves to some terrorist who blew himself up to get into Paradise.

Got it. OK. Nice religion you got there.

There is another alternate theory, held in some fatwas, that non-Muslims don't go to Paradise or Hell -- because they're not human. Instead, being not actual human beings, infidels like you and I "are annihilated like animals."

Frankly, that sounds preferable to being a slave to a psychopathic murderer for the rest of time.

We were able to use miles to upgrade to bidness class (which is all they have on that long-haul flight), and they have these pods to sit and sleep in. Sounded awesome, but after 15 hours my seat was pretty damned uncomfortable. The seatbelt had an airbag built into one side, which was weird.

170 151 Zombie - now I have this image of an Islamic advice column called Dear Abdullah in my head. Dear Abdullah: should I marry my 9 year old first cousin, or my favorite goat? Signed, Lonely in Lahore.
Posted by: PabloD

You say that as a joke, but that's actually EXACTLY what these Muslim newsletters are like. They delve into the most bizarre and personal details. Marrying close relatives is indeed a common question.

One question to an imam (I've already deleted the email, so I can't quote it verbatim) asked (seriously) whether it was OK for a wife to swallow the "pre-cum" prostatic fluid that leaked out of her husband's penis during blowjobs.

The answer? It is totally taboo ("haram") to swallow semen, because God intended semen solely to make babies, and all semen must be deposited into a fertile vagina; but it is TOTALLY OK to swallow pre-cum, as long as it's clear, because it probably doesn't have much sperm in it, so you aren't violating God's will.

This is not from a sex column -- this is a serious religious fatwa newsletter. That's what most of the questions are like.

Now you KNOW it'll be the wrong way 'round. Drop-seat flannels if she's hot, silk peignoir if she could be mistaken for the offspring of Dick Butkus with a particularly homely manatee.

51 I've found that when I wear slacks, nice shoes, a collared shirt, or even a suit, I have almost no problems with TSA.

Posted by: Colorado Alex at May 29, 2016 01:23 PM (fC9RO)

It doesn't help if you wear a little medical device or prosthesis of some kind. You can be dressed to the nines but still be sent to the body irradiator or get a pat down. I can understand it, but it's unpleasant to have a man yell to his colleagues in front of all the other passengers "it's something on her chest!!!"

Then there was the time I wore the new Ferragamo scarf I'd bought on the cruise, tied in an elaborate style I'd just learned. I was trying look nice and thought a scarf would be better than wearing metal jewelry through the detector.
TSA yelled at me to take it all off.

I know they have a job to do, but they don't have to yell at the passengers or discuss their body parts in front of the whole airport.

Once you learn of the tricks pulled to keep Woodrow Wilson and FDR in office you realize these things are possible. Sandy Hook was almost assuredly a psych op. Valerie Plame was an operation to close down leaks. When it didn't go well they had to kill Novak and Russert. They are killing off the Sandy Hook witnesses too.

My cousin's FIL survived the Bataan Death March - just awful some of the stories I've heard (via my cousin). It would have killed all those whiny college and PJboy snowflakes - he said the only reason he and the others survivors made it was because they had all been beaten/survived really harsh living conditions during childhood. And that guy, were he still alive, would have some choice words our our prezzy talking about the "evil" of dropping the bomb as if only Americans were capable of cruelty.

The RNC has put out a scathing minute-long video juxtaposing Hillary's prior lies with conclusions in the IG report. Today Hillary used surrogates to push the defense that Colin Powell did it too, which is another lie, but possibly her last line of defense.

What's not being discussed by MSM is that the factual findings of the IG report show violations of criminal statutes that prohibit the mishandling of classified information. For MSM, it's another Thing That Cannot Be Named.

234 To hear liberals talk, including my poor, ignorant 93 y.o. lib m-i-l, WE were the aggressors toward the Japanese. Husband's late uncle got into a very heated argument several years ago, when she lectured everyone over dinner that the Japanese "are so much more civilized than we are." He was a tank driver in WWII and said, "Tell that to the survivors of the Bataan Death March." It was an interesting dinner.

There is actually some evidence that Harry Dexter White was a Soviet agent and that he actually was trying to provoke the Japanese into war with the United States so that Stalin would be free to withdraw troops from Siberia to help defend Moscow. It was Harry Dexter White's decision to cut off US oil exports to the Japanese which gave them a deadline by which time they had to either agree to American demands or go to war in order to secure the oil fields in the Dutch East Indies, what is now Indonesia.

300 stace above mentioned Fly Boys (by the author of Flags of Our Fathers, son of the last Iwo flag-raiser to pass on).

The first 70 or so pages of that book are a jaw-dropping, yet instructive, effort at moral equivalizing (to coin an inelegant term). All kinds of crap about treatment of non-native Native Americans in CO or something (WTF?), and then ugliness from the Philippine wars.

Really breath-takingly stupid, and all a desperate attempt to somehow "soften" the blow of what it is to follow - that is, the abuse and murder of POWs on Chichi Jima by Japan in 1945.

Almost put the book down, but soldiered on, shaking my head. Always have wondered whether the author got so much push-back and ostracism from his first book - which was so good, but which presented a true history so repugnant to ignorant, bigoted, alien freaks who now are considered "educated" - that this was his contrition exercise.

306 Oil embargo on Japan followed Japanese occupation of French-Indochina, following the fall of France to the Nazis. By that point the scrap metal and other embargoes had been in place for some time - those were imposed in response to Japan's invasion(s) and depredations in China since 1931.

Japanese aggression against China was very well known in the US and actually a political issue with only one side - everyone was appalled by it and hated it. Journalistic accounts and info passed on my missionaries (a big source, actually) meant the whole thing was pretty widely known and discussed in the US.

"Isolationism" was dominant but did not, actually, entail complete disregard for the outside world. Far from it. It was mostly centered around involvement in European wars.

You don't need Soviet agents in the WH to explain why the US slowly, ineffectually, and feebly responded to a literally rampaging (and it turns out, suicidally aggressive) imperial Japan.

The poorly written book on the New Guinea campaign I'm forcing myself to finish notes that cannibalism took place along the Kokoda Track (trail over the Owen Stanley Mountains) by the retreating Japanese. Using Australian POWs.

BTW, the officers were eating OK - actual food (same was true down at the place everyone was fighting for, Buna on the north coast - starving Jap troops and comfortable Jap officers up to the very end). The brutality and barbarism exercised by the Japanese military *within* its own ranks, much less against others, was medieval or perhaps "reminiscent of Jengis Khan". Literally.

But must not judge. High horses and all, or something. Because somewhere in history somebody with blue eyes did bad things.

One thing that made "Letters from Iwo Jima" so bad. The brutal reality of Japanese army life was wildly under-stated.

The current writer of the Cap comic, Nick Spencer, is a total d-bag. He's tweeted lines like "Don't fall for the myth of a 'good' Republican'" and said that people on the right are 'evil' when it comes to social justice and racial issues.

He's also all but said he's patterning Hydra -- and the Red Skull -- in this current story after the Donald Trump campaign.

Way to lose potentially half your readers, Marvel. It's not like they have that many to lose, either. Movie fans outnumber comics readers by several orders of magnitude.

333 The first 70 or so pages of that book are a jaw-dropping, yet instructive, effort at moral equivalizing (to coin an inelegant term). All kinds of crap about treatment of non-native Native Americans in CO or something (WTF?), and then ugliness from the Philippine wars.
---

Oh, wow, I don't even remember that part. Either I skipped over it, or the subsequent account of the Japanese atrocities blanked it out of my mind. It was bad enough reading about our troops being vivisected and cannibalized, but then the account by the Japanese soldier who coldly and deliberately raped and killed Chinese women turned my hair grayer. The part about tying up a Chinese boy and letting the military dogs tear off pieces of him to eat didn't help. I lost sleep.

I remain absolutely amazed at the incongruous, heavy-handed nature of Bradley's failed little moral equivalence exercise that opened the book.

One gets a book about a particular small chapter of WWII, on a small Japanese island, and is greeted with a rambling, unpersuasive, irrelevant stumble through some highlights of bad American behavior in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As I vaguely recall, Bradley didn't even attempt to explicitly make the moral equivalence "argument". So, apart from historically and morally imbecilic, cowardly as well.

371 Bander, could be wrong but I thought it was a Dutch commie who was (legit) found to have set the Reichstag fire.

In any case, Joe Hallenbeck for the save (of me) here by pointing out that it wasn't the fire but its use as a pretext that mattered.

And - damn, you'd think my memory would be better, just read this not long ago in Evan's trilogy on Nazi Germany - but the Reichstag fire was actually not the case where the Nazis made their biggest consequential power grab. It was the assassination of the German ambassador to France (by a French commie).

I think that's when the Ermachtigungesetz (Enabling Act) was passed (though the very fact it was passed denoted that the republic and rule of law were already dead).

Unless I'm getting all those things mixed up. In any case, the Nazis clearly would have seized power (the term they themselves used, no shyness about that), with/without the Reichstag fire and the assassination.

What's sad, but not surprising I guess, is that there *were* anti-German depredations taking place in parts of Poland prior to the invasion. These ugly but familiar events were a godsend to Goebbels in prepping the German public.

Had nothing to do with Hitler's motivation or plans, of course (nor Stalin's), but these things *did* account for some the willingness/enthusiasm of German troops to go out of bounds in some areas in the first months of the war. With the assistance of vengeful local ethnic Germans.

Ok for you and Polli here goes.

Captain America I is Steve Rogers

He gets froze at the end of WW2...

The Spirit of 76 fills in for Cap from may 1945 to the end of the war. (Captain America II)

From 1946-1960 Captain America is a hero from WW2 known as "The Patriot" (Captain America III)

A "Hyper Patriot" William Burnside subjects himself to the Super Soldier proceduire without "Vita Rays" driving him insane, also exposed is his young sidekick Jack Monroe.

These two were involved in the TOTALLY evil "red scare" and put in suspended animation.

(Captain America IV)

so Steve Rogers gets thawed and joins the Avengers....

Nixon happens and Steve Rogers quits as Cap and becomes "Nomad (i)" eventually Evil Nixon is vanquished and Cap resumes his identity.

Jack Monroe gets thawed in the 80s and eventually assumes the role of "Nomad(2) (who adopts the baby Bucky Polli)

Oil embargo on Japan followed Japanese occupation of French-Indochina,
following the fall of France to the Nazis. By that point the scrap
metal and other embargoes had been in place for some time - those were
imposed in response to Japan's invasion(s) and depredations in China
since 1931.

Japanese aggression against China was very well known in the US and
actually a political issue with only one side - everyone was appalled by
it and hated it. Journalistic accounts and info passed on my
missionaries (a big source, actually) meant the whole thing was pretty
widely known and discussed in the US.

"Isolationism" was dominant but did not, actually, entail complete
disregard for the outside world. Far from it. It was mostly centered
around involvement in European wars.

You don't need Soviet agents in the WH to explain why the US slowly,
ineffectually, and feebly responded to a literally rampaging (and it
turns out, suicidally aggressive) imperial Japan.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 29, 2016 04:00 PM (QDnY+)"

Yes. I agree that in the 1930s the Japanese were led by evil people doing wicked things for bad reasons. I also agree that the US would probably had to deal with them at some point. However in December 1941 the US was very unprepared for the task. Cutting off the oil to Japan was not done for the people of China, Indonesia or the United States. Cutting off the oil was done for the benefit of the Soviet Union.

The thing is that Congress had given the Secretary of State the authority to control the amount of oil that could be sold to the Japanese. The Secretary of State (Morganthau?) relied on Harry Dexter White who, on instructions from Moscow, recommended cutting off the oil entirely. His recommendation was acted on and events logically followed from that.

Bucky being brought back from the dead despite Stan Lee saying editorial word of God back in the day was three characters would NEVER be brought back from the dead:

1) Uncle Ben

2) Gwen Stacy

3) Bucky

was a shameless effort to rehabilitate Jungle John Kerry's reputation and a subtle way to try to justify aiding the soviets in that whole "red scare" era....

Hillary Clinton (Source:Associated Press)
A national transgender advocacy organization is criticizing the Clinton campaign for promising - and then backtracking - to fill out its political questionnaire on issues of importance to the transgender community.

In a news release, Trans United Fund (TUF) noted that it had informed presidential campaigns from both parties of the organization's questionnaire upon its release on April 11. Within 30 minutes, both Democratic presidential campaigns happily agreed to fill out the questionnaire. The campaign of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders completed the questionnaire and returned it on time. But two weeks after agreeing to complete the questionnaire, the Clinton campaign reneged on that promise, complaining that the questionnaire was "too long." The organization also contacted the Trump campaign, but has not received any sort of response to date.

Ugh. A few years ago we had a contract worker in outside sales who insisted on wearing flip-flops (he was in his late 40s, so Boomerish). We're normally an extremely casual workplace, but when I finally told him to start wearing closed toe shoes, the fucker went BALLISTIC, because he "wasn't an hourly employee so you can't tell me what to wear when I work".

Yeah, that didn't last long.

Meanwhile, back at the Libertarian Party convention:

A well-known figure in Libertarian circles, Starchild has made himself known for his flamboyant style and dedication to the Libertarian Party. Friday, he wore a transparent poncho with the words "demand transparency" over his only other clothing, a black Speedo. Saturday, he wore a cheetah-print dress with a matching parasol.

"I'm the youngest delegate," Vina Love, age 15, said. "I have a voice. I can vote, which is always refreshing to have."

I watched the Libertarian debate hosted by Penn Jillette. My opinion of Libertarians fell thru the bottom. I used to think there was some substance to the ideology. The 3 candidates sounded like blind ideologues spouting cliche, kinda leftie, answers. Sometimes giving one word answers...literally..ONE word answers. I was surprised at their superficiality.

439 Spent the afternoon watching War Stories-Vietnam on the PBS channel.

http://www.pbs.org/video/2365756218/

I was a teenager during the Vietnam War and I simply have fuzzy memories of the nightly news, protests, and my cousin losing his life there at age 19.
This documentary, done in three parts, is excellent. It follows the war from beginning to end, but it simply gives the viewer a timeline and background, then moves to a veteran who is telling his relevant story. The present day veteran is filmed with his photo from his days in Vietnam (so one sees the very youthful vet with his M16, etc.) while he tells his story.
I had yard work to do, but blew it off once I started watching this. All three hours of it. Lots of archival footage, etc.

Not all of the vets interviewed are unknown to the audience. There is an interview(all these interviews are very brief, riveting and to the point) of Pat Sajak, of Wheel of Fortune Fame.

Pat was a member of the Armed Forces Radio when he served in Vietnam(which I didn't know) and there is archival footage of him doing the "Good Morning...Vietnam call that Robin Williams reenacted in the movie of the same name)

Highly recommend.
