So sorry about yesterday everyone, especially Vic. I thought maybe I had turned off my alarm. Nope. Slept right through it. Friday was the last long long day of a long long week.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, May 29, 2016. On this day in 2001 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the disabled golfer Casey Martin can use a cart to ride in tournaments. This was a compounding of the problem that the ADA is blatantly unconstitutional and adding court jurisdiction over professional golf which is also BS.

Let's see 4500 mph times 5280 feet per mile divided by 60 minutes per hour divided by 60 seconds per minute is 6,600 feet per second. That is about twice as fast as an M193 55 grain bullet fired from a 20 inch M16 barrel which is itself going at a pretty zippy muzzle velocity.

As a long, long time fan of SF ( I have devoured it all my 57 years), I remember that a lot of time the ship actually did use rail guns. With a rail gun mounted along the axis of the ship you could get the speed of the projectile up to 10's of thousands of MPH. So you could use a smaller projectile, fired from farther away, for a much more devastating result.

Too geeky for Sunday morning?

"I keep thinking that if you pull the trigger on one of those rail guns while in orbit...

OK, consider first that you have zero gravity. Second, there really are no rails, it's actually a tube lined with electromagnets. The projectile is something that can be pulled and pushed by magnets. Think of the particle accelerators. As the projectile is accelerated by magnetic force, there is no resulting "opposite" reaction.

No. If the projectile is moving in one direction, an equal amount of force will be exerted in the opposite direction so that the total force of the projectile/launcher system adds up to zero. This is recoil, even if it is done with electromagnetic force rather than gunpowder. You could launch an equal mass in the opposite direction to cancel out the recoil and then the launcher would not be propelled at all.

Sorry, but not at all.

Picture a metal rod in a holder, in a long tube, lined with circular magnets, that can have their polarity switched from positive to negative very fast in a controlled order.

Switch on the first to push the rod away from it and the second to pull the rod towards it. Repeat, lather rinse and repeat until you've accelerated the rod to the speed you want it. Remember to aim it first as it just a dumb stick of metal.

There is no actual contact between the metal rod and the ship, just magnetic forces, hence no "opposite reaction".

It does not need physical contact, just force acting between the two objects. Magnetic force is force just like mechanical force if you had physical contact.

Yes, I realized that too. We are referring to two different technologies, my apologies. I've never been able to understand why SF writers throw the "rail gun" blanket over things that obviously are not actual rail guns.

Left unspoken is that the ship is generally moving forward which would counteract the recoil.

96 Something like a rail gun has been proposed as a means of spacecraft propulsion. Google for "ion drive". The idea is that if you have a source of enormous amounts of energy, like a nuclear power plant, on a spacecraft, you could use something like a linear accelerator to get ions going at something near the speed of light. Since the amount of propulsion is 1/2 M V**2 (one half Mass times the square of the Velocity) and the mass of each ion is pretty small but with an enormous velocity the thrust becomes significant.

The advantage of the ion drive is that you do not need to carry as much mass for fuel since you will get thrust from the high velocity. However, the weight of the power source and linear accelerators is considerable so this only makes even theoretical sense for very long missions.

One interesting of an ion drive propulsion is that you would build up an enormous charge on the spacecraft so the solution to that is to also accelerate the extra electrons and shoot them out the back as well to get a bit more thrust but mainly to not get an enormous electric arc the first time the space craft comes in contact with any other object.

99 The launched projectile and the platform would move in opposite directions, however, velocity would be proportional to their relative masses-- the more massive platform would have less velocity imparted than the smaller projectile. Stabilizing the platform, either with balancing thrusters or perhaps gyroscopic forces, would be neccessary.

Well, if the rail gun fires forward, it would tend to slow down the ship and if the ship is a spacecraft, slowing down means that it might fall out of orbit. But in the case of space weapons that we are talking about, the orbiting spacecraft is probably shooting down at the earth so the recoil will cause it to move up to a higher orbit and go a bit faster.

113 Good morning all. Today's EZ Dog Journal entry is a good 'un.

May 29, 1944
Goodhan took me flying today. A "message to Garcia" sort of thing. A Lt of the 91 Recon was out on the point of II Corps advance and didn't know the situation. So he radioed for some help. Army turned the problem over to the Arty section and we sent Goodhan out to look. He buzzed a few towns trying to find out who owned them till he finally saw a jeep parked in Norma, a little town built right on the top of a 1000' sheer cliff. He found a cow pasture up there and landed (not an easy job). Sure enough - there was his Lt - with 2 or 3 men, and they were all between Norma and the Germans. Goodhan promised him a situation map and came back to the CP to get one. I went back with him on the second trip. As we circled the town to land the Italians started pouring out into the field. By the time we stopped rolling at least a couple hundred were gathered around shaking hands and raising a fuss in general.
We broke out a carton of cigarettes and had a great time giving them away. On the way back we toured the front lines - saw a lot of 3d Div doughboys moving up and quite a number of our tanks maneuvering.
The front as a whole is moving quite slowly. Mines, wire and suicide squads account for most of the delay.

Libya is not an abject hell hole of violence, destruction and terrorism and cannot be considered anything other than a failed state. It has joined the dozen other countries in N. The idea of a rail gun train is even more high tech than a bullet train and I would love to see California spent lots of their taxpayer's money for a rail gun train. To travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco the passengers will first drive the 110 miles to Bakersfield and board the train. The navy rail gun can only go at 45,000 MPH because it has to be short enough to fit on a ship but the distance from Bakersfield to Merced is much greater so the train can be accelerated much faster.

The thing is that the rail gun train can only accelerate for half the journey. The second half will be decelerating. That is no problem. The same technology that gets the train up to speed can also be used to slow it down. Just put an insulated gap in the rails at the halfway point to separate the two rail gun systems. The navy rail gun accelerates its projectile to 45,000 MPH in a few milliseconds. This acceleration, which will continue for the first half of the rail journey, will probably throw all the passengers to the rear of the train cars with the force of several Gs. When they reach the midway point they will start decelerating at the same rate. This will throw the passengers to the front of the car with the same force and probably convert them into a sloppy goo.

Given California's $15/hour minimum wage, it will probably be cost effective to have an automated system to hose out the rail cars and make them ready for the next trip.

Well, the good news is that private enterprise space launches are becoming a thing. This means that any person of group of people with enough money will soon be able to place their Rods from God into orbit.

One of the interesting things from a few years back when we were getting the successful tests of the missile defense system (you know, the one that is impossible because it is like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet?) is that the video was so cool that the networks had to put it on the air even though it contradicted their preferred narrative that such a system is impossible and just a boondogle and waste of money that could be more usefully handed over to connected Democrat cronies. For the children.

When the anti-missile hits the missile, their combined velocity is so great that both of them are converted to plasma. In other words, they knocked the electrons off each other. That actually sounds like something Redd Foxx would have threatened if he knew more physics, "I'll hit you so hard I'll knock your electrons off."

214 While the State Departments own internal probe found former Secretary Hillary Clinton violated federal recordkeeping laws, its not the first time she and her top aides shielded her e-mail from public disclosure while serving in a government position.

As first lady, Hillary was embroiled in another scheme to bury sensitive White House e-mails, known internally as Project X.

In 1999, as investigators looked into Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate and other scandals involving the then-first lady, it was discovered that more than 1 million subpoenaed e-mails were mysteriously lost due to a glitch in a West Wing computer server.

This Clinton e-mail scandal is nothing new, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told me. There were previous efforts to hide e-mails in the Clinton White House.

It is my impression that if spoliation can be proved, the court is justified in assuming the worst. That gives the defendant an incentive to find the evidence on order to prove, for instance in Hillary's case that she was only taking bribes and not committing treason.

256 There has been a serious debate about rail gun recoil. An experiment was done at the Naval Post Graduate school to see if rail gun recoil exists between the projectile and the rails. None was found. If rail guns recoil, the recoil - like the recoil of a cannon - exists at the breech. The problem is that it is possible to build a rail gun without a breach.

Here is the Naval Post Graduate experiment:

Basically what the experiment showed is that there is a force on the projectile from the magnetic fields on the current conducting rails, but there is no counter force on the rails from the magnetic field around the current conducting projectile. This was a major theory on the origin of rail gun recoil - and the experiment proved that theory incorrect.

It is certainly possible to design and build a rail gun which does recoil.

The question is whether or not it is possible to build a rail gun which does not recoil. That question seems to hinge on whether or not capacitors generate a recoil force when they discharge.

259 Not a Trump fan and I predict many problems with Trump as president, but the silver lining in a Trump presidency is that many of the SJWs will have a complete melt-down and will reveal themselves to be the fascists that they are.

Wait a sec, when that does happen, the media will just make excuses for them, just like they did during the Bush years.

260 Trump will give a speech at Rolling Thunder today. Word is the Rolling Thunder people were not happy when Trump informed them he would be coming, uninvited, because now they're stuck with the extra security costs.

I'm almost hoping that some of the anti-Trumpers make an appearance. It should be fun to see what a bunch of bikers do to them.

265 The "Rods from God" idea came from a meteorite impact observation. A substantial blast crater was formed from an impact event from a very small meteor. It turned out that the meteor was shaped like a Javelin and impacted the ground at close to full solar system orbital velocities of about 12 miles per second instead of slowing down drastically when it encountered the atmosphere - as meteors generally do.

267 The recoil is directed through the electromagnetic field, not througgh the inertia of the gun's mass.

268 So great to see a sell-out crowd at the Indy 500. One in every 925 Americans is at the race today.

They do it right, a true Memorial Day remembrance during the pre-race ceremonies...

Really isn't anything more American than the Indy 500...

269 Hell, if you deploy the payload in orbit you won't even need the gun. There was an old SF story I read years ago about space aliens who bombarded earth with big chunks of rock.
