Reviving Memorial Day Traditions [KT]

Further to the two moving post below,

6 Facts about the History of Memorial Day

There is a town in New Jersey that is bringing a Memorial Day tradition back to life, complete with a reading of the Gettysburg Address.

Interesting. I wonder if there are similar revivals in other places. Is your town or city doing anything special or different this year to make Memorial Day more meaningful? Either something new or something that hasn't been done for years?

Or, has your town or city maintained a meaningful ceremonial remembrance over the years? Do people still participate in such public commemorations where you live? I think we lose something important when these observances fade away.

Of course, for some, Memorial Day will always be personal.

4 Was in a gas station earlier today. Guy at the next pump, all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, says "Happy Memorial Day!" to me. I couldn't help myself. I replied, "This isn't a happy day, this isn't a day of celebration, this is a day of remembrance, for those whose untold sacrifices helped keep our country free." Then I touched the brim of my hat and said, "Absent comrades."

He had no fucking idea what I was talking about. Which pissed me off even more. So I just fueled up and left.

5 My wife overheard the exchange I mentioned above. I got back in the truck and she told me, "Not everyone understands what Memorial Day is all about. If they didn't serve, didn't have parents or relatives that served, they don't know. You probably didn't have to be a dick about it."

6 Picked up a friend from the hospital today. His roommate was a veteran of WWII. Former school superintendent, now legally blind. Didn't want to talk about the war. Memorial Day is personal for him, too.

15 Went to a shortened Memorial ceremony only a minister, mayor and fire chief spoke. Around 50 people attended, my dad said last year with expanded ceremonies had a couple of hundred but the change was there wasn't a parade so many didn't know. I marched in it a couple of times as a kid, always got a ice cream cup afterward from factory who makes it in town.

19 I've seen extra flags around the hood. We visited the cemetery at Ft Sam Saturday and saw all many thousands of little flags, one at each grave.

USAA put up a display of 640,000 poppies in their HQ, one for each service member who's died since WW1.

I think I saw that Ft Sam had to cancel the ceremony this morning due to the storm.

20 Go to Gettysburg. Before the SJWs erase it. Go in the summer, when it's hot. Stand in the tree line and look across that field at The Angle. Then go around to The Angle and look back.

If you know what happened that day in July, it's breathtaking to stand there and look at that incredibly small space and think of those young men, in wool coats both Blue and Grey.

Of course, that battle had gone on for three days. Read Michael Shaara's Killer Angels, or if you are short on time, watch th miniseries Gettysburg done by Ted Turner. To read about the Devil's Den and Little Round Top and then see them....

Last full measure indeed.

I will try to watch "The War" this week. It was a yearly tradition with me, and I thought that as time went on and with each passing viewing I'd become use to it. Instead, I found myself sobbing harder and harder every year, so I skipped watching it the past few years. But, I'll watch again, to see how much was given, how much was lost and how much was gained.

I'm starting to get a bit emotional right now.

24 Our rural area always has a service and has done so since the late 1860s.

Reading the Gettysburg Address is, ahem, not a part of the service.

But they honor the fallen with much gratitude and somberness every year and you will never see a more patriotic bunch, nor people who love their country more.

She buried not one, but two Veteran husbands. Dad at Arlington at a very young age - with 4 young kids in tow.
Then again 30 years later, Dad #2.

If you've lost someone in war, then Memorial Day truly is every day. I feel such a strong connection to an uncle I never knew and to all those of my dad's generation that didn't make it back. I can't explain it. Maybe in the hereafter, it will make sense.

30 Arlington Cemetary was Robert E Lee's home. He obviously had to move away, what with leading the Army of the South and all. The US seized the property then just to show they meant business planted his son who had been killed in a battle in the front yard.

33 Our town doesn't have a Memorial Day parade. Being this close to DC most local activities center around the monuments and memorials on the Mall and at Arlington Cemetery. However, Rolling Thunder does start out from the local Harley dealership. It is an impressive, and NOISY, assembly.

They seem to always time their attacks to coincide with some date of significance for their conquering cause.
May 29 is the date Muslims captured the seat of Byzantine Christianity, Constantinople. The history books state they entered the city at 10:00 AM and began their slaughter. Yesterday was May 29. The shooter began his attack 10:00 AM.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by this attack. I`ve attended services at that Church.

My maternal Grandmother, a deep south Texican, always called today Decoration Day, as learned from her grandparents.

My late father, filthy POS that he was, was the only male member of our family to not have served, back to the civil war.

Everyone of them made it back home, although Gramps damn near got whacked by Grandma when as a soon to be ex-Corporeal he got drunk, stole a Colonels government sedan, went joy riding around Ft. Riley, and wrecked it, lol.

41 Believe it or not you can find some pretty good ceremonies in Los Angeles. We go every year to Forest Lawn Cemetary, Hollywood Hills. I think all the Forest Lawn locations do something for Memorial Day. At Hollywood Hills, they have color guards from a local JROTC and a local Boy Scout Troop (with buglers- yes multiple!) and the Police band with good vocalists, and a pipe and drum corp does Amazing Grace. They honor the fallen, honor vets, have some pretty good speakers- this year was a Gold Star Mom who was trying to rebuild support for Wounded Warrior Project after the scandal about the former CEO and COO. For years this was the City Council District of Tom LaBonge, who has been in L.A. politics forever, and is your traditional local gregarious gladhander politician. He was always good for Veteran's Day, and always not reverent enough for Memorial Day and I Hated that they felt obliged to have him as speaker. This year he retired and the new councilman is Paul Krekorian. He's also a Democrat, but I have to say his speech was quite good, and he even put borrowed phrase from Reagan in it, so kudos to him for making it about the day and not him or politics. This event draws about 3-400 people, and Forest Lawn gives out free cold water bottles and Ice Cream after the event. You can't beat the location in their 'Court of Liberty' with the giant mosaic mural of scenes from the founding of our country on it as the backdrop. After the ceremony, I drag the kids to the adjacent Lincoln courtyard and read them the Gettysburg Address- perhaps the greatest memorial words ever spoken. Then we visit the grave of James E. Suh, Navy SEAL who was killed in the Helo shoot down in Operation Red Wings. I do that to try to personalize it for the kids a little- that this is about real people who made real sacrifices and left loved ones behind.

After that, the day is free to make of it what we wish, and to appreciate the kind of life that others sacrificed so much to allow for us.

What I did notice is that many more businesses are closed today to observe Memorial Day than in years past.

62 We went to the service at the Lexington (KY) National Cemetery. There was a great crowd as always, lots of kids this year which was heartening. The American Legion plays a big part, and this year they included the Camp Nelson Honor Guard with a caisson and riderless horse. They also do a rifle salute and cannon salute, sing the National Anthem, and lay a wreath. We go every year and it's so moving.
The Cemetery itself is gorgeous, Henry Clay and John Hunt Morgan are interred there as well as hundreds of Civil War soldiers and many of Lexington's founding families. If you're ever in Lex in the spring it's a must-see.

My flag flies 24/7/366.It is mounted to the side of the house and is displayed in accord with flag protocol.

I will do this until I am no longer physically capable.

69 Knowing Gettysburg as I do, I often wonder how they keep such a large area from souvenir hunters digging. Of course in town you can buy minie balls almost anywhere real or not. And of course quite a bit of the area is also private, so I guess some dig in those spots.

Something amusing to me about displaying the flag,we have been at this house for 6 years now,and the flag has been out since we moved in. At that time there was no one else displaying.

Now, all 9 houses on our road have flags out.

Irongrampa, sadly, with a few 100 homes in my neighborhood, I may be the only one that flies Old Glory daily. I do see barren old rusty flagpoles in some yards, though.

No. There were always some one to look at the patent to see if it made sense, even if the formal examination process was set up in 1836.

The Patent Office was the only government building not to be burned by the British in 1814. The Superintendent of Patents , William Thornton, convinced the British to spare it.

Thornton put himself before a gun aimed at the building, and exclaimed: "Are you Englishmen or only Goths and Vandals? This is the Patent Office, a depository of the ingenuity of the American nation, in which the whole civilized world is interested. Would you destroy it? If so, fire away, and let the charge pass through my body."

Ironically, all those records and models were lost in the Patent Fire of 1836.

It was deeply felt to be a great loss at the time, and efforts were made to recover some of the first 10,000 patents. Less than 3,000 patents were recovered.

There was no backup system in place like there is now. Now an old mine in PA has the records, including the patent files, issued patents, and applications abandoned by their inventors without being issues (and some of those that never see the light of day are real doozies).

106 I just returned from a Memorial Day service at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.

There were more people there today than in previous years. It is very sobering to see the tombstones and marked urn boxes.

I see that your top military awards are placed on the headstone, as well as the campaigns that were going on during your service, even if you did not earn the campaign ribbon. In addition, I saw a lot of new symbols above the name, not just a cross.

My wife thought it was good, but I noticed the speaches were more pro forma than in the past, and the three volley's had only one gun firing in the first volley. Clicks the rest of the time.

I stood with an ex-paratrooper major / now pastor who's son was buried in the cemetery. They honored his grave properly. I honored his sacrifice, and those close to me, like my father, my wife's father, the EM2 who died next to me that awful day, and Carroll LeFon (Neptunus Lex).

137 Someone hijacked my steam account. Ran virus (nothing) anti-malware (like 7 things.) Have been rerunning them like a monkey with a cocaine button.

Also changed my email and amazon passwords (the only other place I used my credit card.) Also, after running the virus and malware scans, checked my bank account and found no new suspicious charges to the card. So I got that going for me.

OK, but it's going to have to take a lot of convincing. I started to read an anti-Trump piece Buckley wrote for the (U.K.) Spectator and he had all of that infuriating rich boy snobbery and superciliousness (that Iowahawk parodied so brilliantly with his Reginald Van Voerhees VII) dialed up to 11 and I couldn't finish reading it.

170 Band of Brothers was amazingly well done (duh).

Always have wondered whether the actor cast to play Guarniere ("Gonorrhea") was discovered early in the casting process. He is a dead-ringer for the real guy - and he sounds exactly like him, too. Can't recall another actor so perfectly looking/sounding like a real person he was portraying.

Now that I'm a Garand owner I enjoy watching the little details in some scenes.

Sad that Winters passed last year. Don't know if any of them are still alive.

190 "The Pacific" was doomed to be what it was because it followed 3 different story lines, unlike BoB which of course followed one unit and a few people through a year of "marquee" battles in all of which they (incredibly) participated.

But now that I've read a bit more on the general topic, I am even more disappointed in the whole episode they basically wasted in Australia. Yeah yeah I know it was just following Leckie's book, but would have been interesting to convey some of the more interesting aspects of that period. The war fear/panic in Australia (real, reasonable, Japanese invasion) and the "Battle of Brisbane" riot between locals and US service men.

Guadalcanal vet I know was really looking forward to "The Pacific", yet stopped watching it about 3 episodes in. I understand that, though being a junkie I of course watched it all.

I believe, as an infant, I lived there for a short time (or my parents, before I was born).

Also, oldest friend's dad enlisted there in 1942 (he was from MO). He ended up flying L-4 artillery observation planes, saw 1 day of action (Saipan) before a concussion forced him off flight duty. Spent the rest of the war doing admin. work in New Caledonia (almost the only truly nice South Pacific location of the tropical variety where our guys spent time).

He was in Manila doing out-processing admin work and ended up attending a few days of the war crimes trial for Gen. Yamashita (the trial was done there, and pronto, was not part of the Far Eastern Military Tribunal later in Tokyo, where Tojo and the big shots got theirs).

209 My Uncle Pete was a Navy pilot. He crashed his jet and died in Korea during the war. I was a baby then and I never had the chance to know him. My father always spoke highly of him. He's buried at Arlington and I've made the trip across the country to honor him and the sacrifice he made for our country.
My father was career Air Force and did his tour in Vietnam, as did I. I put a flag on his grave today to honor him and his years of service to our country.

If you know what happened that day in July, it's breathtaking to stand there and look at that incredibly small space and think of those young men, in wool coats both Blue and Grey.

Of course, that battle had gone on for three days. Read Michael Shaara's Killer Angels, or if you are short on time, watch th miniseries Gettysburg done by Ted Turner. To read about the Devil's Den and Little Round Top and then see them....

I did just that back in the Summer of 99 with my sister. Hot, steamy, summer day. Very moving experience. Had a great great great grandfather die there. He was in one of the Pennsylvania regiments.

Killer Angels was fantastic and the movie Gettysburg was fantastic.

216 As much I like the classics like "Midway" with the great iconic actors, I've long wished a non-cheesy, more intense treatment were done of those events.

The real-world drama, importance, insanely improbable course of events, valor, etc. really deserve a serious treatment.

If you weave all the elements together - from the impact of the Doolittle Raid to the amazing sleuthing and brain-work of Station Hypo on code-breaking to the amazing coincidences and "breaks" that led to the spectacular victory - it's far superior to any fictional screenplay I can think of.

In any case, BoB is 98% real and exclusively military history - the tiny little element stuck into the Bastogne episode doesn't make sense even if one stipulates the very dubious rationale you correctly identify.

The A gang Officer on the IJN cruiser Tone, with a better parts inventory, could have changed history. One of Tone's search planes, delayed by a catapult problem, was assigned to search where the two US task forces were hiding.

That battle is very hard, if not impossible, to duplicate with naval warfare simulations. The Japanese win almost all the time.

Per the previous thread, USS Nautilus (SS-16

hit the stricken IJN carrier Akagi with a torpedo, which was a dud. The air flask of the torpedo supported several Japanese sailors as a life preserver.

245 Well normally I'd lay on a heavy disclaimer about the pros knowing their own business, but in feature film production that clearly is difficult to do, given the duds and failures and crap they increasingly turn out.

But if there's a business/marketing model to make chick flicks successful, and comic-book/action hero movies successful, and comedies - and on and on - then there's one for a serious historical movie (esp. when the true story is better than 99% of the crap Hollywood can dream up).

Private Ryan has zero romance. Lawrence of Arabia (original release) I believe did not depict a single human female.

Those two seemed to do OK.

250 I've never understood the compulsion to insert romantic elements into perfectly good, true, overwhelmingly vivid stories. There are one trillion movies, and a trillion more on the way. I can't recall a romance flick that somehow felt the need to insert fictional military combat scenes - the reverse makes no more sense.

I was thinking the same thing today watching Midway today, but then OTH, I used to watch a lot of old WW2 movies, filmed during or just after the war, and many if not most had some kind of love story. Some had the two buddies in love with the same girl plot line.

A lot of those movies were made to boost morale and support the war effort. I guess maybe they wanted to help keep the home fires burning, and show the boys what they were fighting for.

And the accidental timing of the arrival of the various squadrons over the Japanese fleet - and the order of those accidental timings.

And the fact that one key squadron very very nearly didn't get there at all, and wouldn't have, save for that one Jap destroyer moving at high speed, and one experienced squadron leader's intuition about that mundane fact.

Like I said, Midway in its full glory makes implausible fiction, and spectacular truth.

264 We live outside Portland Oregon and a few years ago we found out that our little suburb was built on some land owned by a local Japanese-American family. They had a berry farm and were relocated to a camp in Idaho during the war (when they came back, I don't think they could make the farm a going concern which is a pity because they would have made a killing on the land). Anyway, they had a son who enlisted and was sent to France as part of the 442 Infantry. He was killed in action in the Voges mountains just a few months after being sent over. We take the five kids and they tumble about the old German immigrant headstones and then we clean up "our" veteran's headstone and leave flowers. My 7-year-old had a real moment today. "He must have been a good man." Yes he was, kiddo.

I told this one once before on some thread, but at one point a BBC reporter "came out" to me - very discreetly, literally looking around before he started in - about how appalled he was at the press's moral inversion during one of our recent wars. He noted our enemies were as vile as any vanquished in WWII, while US/allied ways of war were of course vastly more discriminate and careful - yet the two sides were being treated as equals.

And luck. Lee's did his planning figuring that he'd be up against Hooker for a repeat engagement and the war would end with a Chancellorsville II. The entire war in the Pacific has a surreal quality to it. The Japanese leadership knew they would lose, before they started the first attack. The weekend before December 7th, there was a full alert practice for all ships and planes in Hawaii. An attack would have been repulsed with minor damage.

The US Fleet responded pretty fast for peacetime at Pearl.

It was an absolute blessing the BBs were lost in port, not at sea like in Kimmel's plan. His very detailed plans were ignorant of the quality, range, and number of the IJN naval aircraft. We would have got stomped. And yes, I've run that simulation.

One of the problems facing Kimmel was the severe lack of search aircraft based in Hawaii. The War Department was sending every B-17 to the Philippines and the Navy didn't have near enough Catalinas for 360 degree coverage.

How did Kimmel's plan account for that?

Gettysburg isn't really a mystery. Lee was just out of his depth, and it showed. He was tactically adept, but not a great general...lucky (up to a point) in the generals that opposed him. McClellan, Pope, McClellan again, Burnside and Hooker. And then Meade, who was tactically competent and fought him to better than a draw, and finally Grant, at which point the whole house of cards came tumbling down.

I believe Nimitz was responsible for that. More of a miracle is the fact the Japs cancelled the third wave and didn't destroy the fuel tanks above Pearl.

315 I think the shoe search has been discounted, the area was cleaned out earlier and one doesn't take a division on a foraging expedition. Lee had his junior commanders make decisions he didn't want. But his cavalry was missing and was blind on the Union Army's wearabouts. The whole thing reads like a lot of novels that you think you would need to make up things to fit.

Still if you take him to be at least a good tactician he failed to take advantage of terrain. He did not take Seminary Ridge when he could have. He let the Union troops have the high ground then rather than seeking to fight on other ground of their choosing, he decided to go all in in a situation he had to know was to the South's disadvantage even if he did not know the full disposition of Union troops.

He attacked up Little Round Top. He authorized Pickett's charge. Those are not mere out of depth failures.

321 One of the great ironies is that in April-May 1863, Joe Hooker sent 10,000 of his AoP cavalry under George Stoneman in the direction of Richmond, hoping that the distraction would compel Lee to send JEB Stuart and the ANV after Stoneman. What happened, I think, is that the Union command structure, proto-modern in development, suddenly displayed its superiority over the old Napoleonic model embraced by Lee. Lee couldn't afford to make a single mistake, and he made one.

I cannot fathom it.

I moved in next to Rocky a good 15 years before I learned that he was there on June 6th. On the beach.
I knew he was a vet, but he was so healthy & active, I figured Korea.
Anyway, I went straight over to talk to him. "Rocky, you never told me you were at Normandy..."

He just looked off into the distance for a minute. Didn't say one word. Then he turned around and walked back inside.
I never brought it up again.

Kimmel avoided that by being at sea. The Pacific Fleet was rarely in port in November and December 1941. He worked the fleet hard.

His plan was to use the US CVs for launching carrier aircraft as scouts, with a submarine outer screen.

He figured either the aircraft or submarines would give him enough warning. He also expected patrol squadron help from the Philippines (PAT WING 10) with some possibility of scouting from Guam and Wake for early IJN sortie warning.

His battle plan was a carefully choreographed BB surface action around the Marshal Islands. We had superiority in BB gunnery, but we had no idea how skilled the IJN was at night-fighting and how incredible their torpedoes were.

We got lucky.

Third wave not happening probably rightly blamed on Nagumo - precisely because whereabouts of US carriers was unknown. If they'd been caught/hit dockside, third wave would probably have hit - and as you say, if the fuel farm were included in the target list, whoa.

Actually for all the brilliance of their naval air arm, and even of the overall use of naval forces in the first six months of the war, the IJN repeatedly suffered major missed opportunities due to caution or lack of aggressive spirit by senior admirals.

From the Pearl Harbor attack to Leyte Gulf, at key moments there was a failure to reap maximum rewards from generally successful engagements.

339 Gettysburg was, well, a mystery to me. So many bad choices by someone not noted for such. The notion that he just didn't have all the information he needed seems true but not sufficient to explain it.

Lee's plan included J.E.B. Stuart's sabers charging the Union line from the rear as Pickett's charge reached the stone wall. Had that happened, the Confederates might well have not only breached the Union line but created a panic and rout back to D.C. Lee might well have won the war.

The reason Stuart did not attack is that a then unknown George Armstrong Custer prevented him from getting to the Union rear. The next year, troopers under Custer killed Stuart at Yellow Tavern.

It is interesting to note that Lee's celebrated flanking attack (led by Stonewall Jackson who was wounded and died of his wounds) was an audacious gamble since he violated a basic principle by sitting his force in the face of a superior enemy. He won that gamble but the somewhat similar Stuart attack plan, equally audacious, was not met with success.

348 My grandpa was a tail gunner on a B-24 during WWII, flew the China-Burma Hump. (Look it up, kiddos, I know they don't teach this stuff in school anymore...) He was a bit old to be joining up, over 30, and he left my grandma and dad safely tucked away in Georgia, in a hastily renovated chicken coop that served as married living quarters. He won some medals, left a ton of pictures that I only got hold of when my grandma passed away. So many pictures of him with his buddies in China had "died in plane crash" or "died in aircraft fire" written on the back. I have no idea who these guys were, just that they were my grandpa's friends and they died.
I bring this up to make a simple request. If you have a family member or friend who served in WWII, or Korea, or Vietnam, or anywhere really, find out all you can about their experiences. Ask them. If they're not comfortable talking about what they saw and did, drop the subject, but if they'll tell you the stories - LISTEN. These guys (and gals) won't be with us forever, and when they're all gone, there won't be anyone left to tell the stories of our heroes.

Thanks, NaCly. I remember that the planners were expecting the Japanese to advance from Jaluit, and most air/sub search units were deployed on that approach axis. The IJN, of course, took the northerly route from the Kuriles and Hokkaido.

The Japanese were really good with the set-piece attack. Port Arthur and Tsushima for instance, were daring and well-executed.

Kudos to Kimmel for working up the Pacific Fleet's readiness. That paid off in the Coral Sea.

Those with friends/relatives etc. who are vets (of any war), look into the Veterans' History Project of the Library of Congress (loc.gov/vets).

A way to document the stories/experiences of vets and even civilians directly involved in America's wars.

I've done several WWII vets. Of course I can't enough of this stuff, it's fun for me. But everyone with a vet in their circle should consider it. Obviously WWII first, due to the calendar.

The loss of Jackson forced a lot of changes. He realized it but it was a process of gaining experience with the new structure and in the heat of battle isn't the best time.

Yes, we Yankees are happy we won. Maybe if the South hadn't acted like petulant children. Anyways, the real changes didn't happen until TR, Wilson, and FDR.

Pete Longstreet was a great general, and for defensive war perhaps better than Stonewall.

I find JEB to be held in far higher esteem than his latter war efforts merited.

If I were making an All-Star team from the Union AND Confederate ranks JEB would not be one of my top three Cav commanders.

I'd place Sheridan, Forrest, and Buford ahead of him...

Another great book is Attack on Pearl Harbor: Strategy, Combat, Myths, Deceptions by Alan Zimm. It's an OR analysis of the IJN attack plan.

I only disagree with one of his conclusions. He says that bad stuffing tubes found in BB zone inspections were a minor problem. He felt this would not impearl the BBs if they were caught in deep water.

He was not a DCA, and I believe this a major problem if you have flooding from torpedo hits. It takes a concerted team effort to be ready for battle damage. The USN took a while to ramp up to the DC heroics of 1944 and 1945.

There is not an American counterpart to the magisterial Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully.

For example, where were the USS Hornet's dive bombers? That was covered up a tad. The CAG was not rewarded like the other, although he did get command of an escort carrier later in the war, and eventually made Vice Admiral.

Not really. Fair Oaks/Seven Pines was just a sequential pounding match, which McClellan lost by being ready to retreat at the drop of a hat. Second Bull Run was lost by Pope simply leaving his left flank wide open. Antietam was an uncoordinated series of attacks by the Union, fended off by Lee but involving no maneuver or surprise. Fredericksburg could have been won by a big rock, considering how determined Burnside was to run into the defenses at full speed. And Chancellorsville...well, Lee had lost that battle, repeatedly, until Hooker saved it for him on two separate occasions. At Gettysburg Lee was clearly expecting the same quality of opposition and assumed his characteristically reckless posture, until the Union Army handed him his head (despite Sickles' best efforts to screw things up).

And once he faced an opponent who wouldn't panic and understood strategy and logistics to boot, he was simply out of his depth.

381 eh, my only problem with "where eagles dare" is the time dilation. the rescue plane takes off after danny boy has heard from broadsword and makes what should be at least a 4 hour flight from england to bavaria in about 1/2 hour.

Admittedly, I am assuming by choice. And, I am choosing to think his peers, those with whom he deployed, would have noticed something before he received a second star. Islam...this guy isn't a Bergdahl type I don't believe.

Sorry, but I think this administration is at fault. Enough is known on PTSD, to at the very least, conclude that more info is needed. Is that happening? Or is it only being used to deny the 2nd to a few people?

441 I had the opportunity to attend the Memorial Day Services today with my wife and children in Roswell,Georgia, the largest in Georgia and possibly the whole Southeast. Incredible ceremony with many speakers with tales of pride,sadness, heroism and inspiration. The rendition of God Bless America, Laying of the Wreath, Taps and so many other items brought tears to my eyes and many thousands of others in the crowd. It was by by far the laregest, most moving event of the type I have ever attended. It was a great reminder of the sacrifices made on our behalf and how blessed this nation is. If you live anywhere in the Atlanta area you should make an effort to attend in the future.

Here is what I can glean from different reports from local tv stations

Shooter goes to detailing shop and shoots and kills 50 year old man who had just pulled up for service

Then he starts shooting people going by, cops, helicopters, what have you. Shoots three civilians and two cops.

Young father has his gun and shoots the shooter dead

Swat arrives and shoots the young father, thinking he is the shooter. Young father gets taken to the hospital, and they question him

FBI, local cops and swat search the shooters car and detonate something in it. They do not see the shooters military duffle bag near by. Tv crew sees the bag the next day and tells the cops. Inside the bag is all the shooters info, including his birth certificate

479 mead and his lieutenants deployed very well throughout the battle (with the exception of sickles - although the argument can be made he prevented the rebs rolling up the union line). one of the great stories of gettysburg was the great improvement in the professionalism and skill of the union officer corps. the confederates' were degraded and couldn't replace their losses.

Good Samaritan should lawyer up and sue. Sue the police department, each member of the SWAT team, the people who trained them, their superiors, the police chief, the police Commission, and the City of Houston. He should wind up being the owner of Houston.
