https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_R._W._Nevinson They said he made enemies but I like the guy. He immediately volunteered for the ambulance service. It didnt last long due to his own poor health and he was sent home. At home he volunteered for the home medical service and worked as an orderly. Again, he was forced out due to his poor health. He was appointed an official war artist and went back to the front in 1917. After suffering a stroke, he taught himself to paint with his other hand. During WW2 he still tried to aid the war effort but was rejected. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at June 06, 2016 10:18 AM (iQIUe) 32

- Some smart history guy said the two biggest mistakes the Allies made at the end of the war were allowing the Germans to march back home with their weapons and continuing the blockade causing the Germans to continue to starve. If fed Germans had watched their army come home unarmed and defeated (possibly escorted by armed allied troops), history might have been different. I have never got the attraction to Game of Thrones (or a lot of similar character torture porn movies/books.)
I read to be both entertained as well as find well told stories and characters I like. The closest I can tell about these books is that they are an exercise in schadenfreude- that people get off on good people being tortured and killed and bad guys and gals doing bad things. I was mentioning to a buddy about this and other stories last night (The Walking Dead as well) and I made the point that when ALL you have is tragedy, tragedy has a way of losing it's punch- it just becomes a Bataan death march of pain and suffering with no hope of anything else. Tragedy works best when it is unexpected, when it made sense from what you know of the characters that they would go on and live happily ever after or that if they just talked things out, two people would get along fine instead of dying pointlessly. If tragedy is expected and all you are doing is waiting to see how someone will die pointlessly or how horrible their end will be, you have a simple and un-nuanced a story as what supposedly these "gritty, REAL" stories are trying to distance themselves from. >>Tragedy works best when it is unexpected, when it made sense from what you know of the characters that they would go on and live happily ever after or that if they just talked things out, two people would get along fine instead of dying pointlessly.
Depends on your meaning of the term pointless. Most of the people dying in GOT don't think they are dying pointlessly, they believe they are fighting for a noble cause. Whether it is fighting against the various clans trying to take over the kingdom or whether they are fighting the undead White Walkers. Band of Brothers was full of dying and suffering, some of it quite pointlessly like the soldier who was killed in a jeep rollover after the war was over. It was war and you expected it. But that didn't make the movie any less compelling. My issue with GOT isn't the death or suffering, it's the fact they take an hour to develop a scene that should take 15 minutes. It's ponderous. I wonder if in the new Ben-Hurl movie they strip out all references to Christ?
To me one of the most powerful scenes in the Heston version is when Christ is about to do his sermon, Esther is in the crowd. Balthazar tells Judah to turn away from his path of vengeance. The shot changes then. In the foreground we see the back of Christ and Esther is sitting in the front. Then way in the back by a tree is a tiny Judah who walks way because he thinks what he does in this world is more important. Posted by: Anna Puma at June 06, 2016 11:23 AM (jFXTk) 207
