===============================================

I listen to Alistair Begg everyday, but the pastor I was listening to last night is Pastor Colin Smith of the Orchard Church (what used to be the Arlington Heights Evangelical Free Church). I used to know a lot of folks at his church, and he's a very good systematic Bible expositor. But in my humble opinion, Alistair Begg is just quite wonderful, isn't he?

I get a daily devotional from him by email every morning, and soon-to-be-mister and I are going through his marriage CDs.

So it stood ninety years on the floor
It was taller by half than the old man himself
But it weighed not a pennyweight more

It was always his treasure and pride
But it stopped, short, never to go again
When the old man died

I've always thought it had to do with timing of a sports event. It's still common to talk about "clocking" someone or something when they race as in "Secretariat was clocked in blah, blah for a quarter mile."

So cleaning someone's clock or clocking them was beating them.

100 My grandfather's clock was the best ever made
By the Timex company.
Just like the clock John Cameron Swayze displayed
Last night on the old TV.

Oh it works under water so perfectly,
And still makes a ticking sound.
Which my grandfather tried only this afternoon,
And that's how the old man drowned.

His father told a Houston TV station that Garza was troubled by what he saw in Afghanistan.

His first deployment there - December 2009 to November 2010 - coincided with Afghanistan's deadliest year for American troops. Almost 500 were killed in 2010, according to Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, which monitors military deaths there and in Afghanistan. Four of the five worst months ever for U.S. forces since the start of the war in 2001 were that year- June, July, August and November - when about 233 soldiers were killed.

I'm sure that's part of it, but it's a variation on having one's bell rung. In boxing, if you get hit hard enough you stiffen and shake, like a rung bell. Being clocked would be not just that effect, but having the count be like the chimes of a great clock, tolling to 10.

160 CDR Salamander on Why You Need to Watch Occupied on Netflix

I missed this on last night's ONT, but I want to heartily uptwinkle the Salamander's recommendation of Occupied.

It popped up as a Netflix recommendation a while back, so Mrs. Muse and I started watching it. First episode, I thought it was going to be a joke. Occupied looks *extremely* low budget, like the old TV shows that were shot on video tape rather than film. And the dialog is a curious mix of English and sub-titled Norwegian (also Russian), but the writing is good, as is the complex plot.

So yeah, watch it. There are 8 or 10 episodes available, and I hear they're going to be filming Season 2.

Also, that Amazon is going to be filming their own version if it. Which I'd like to see, as well.

There's an organization called "The Sudden Money Institute" or some name like that, that provides help and advice for people who win lotteries or suddenly get a big inheritance and who have never handled the vast amounts of money they now possess. If you don't realize how much having all that money changes your life, you can simply piss it all away.

Some people just can't handle money. They spend every dime they get and max out all of their credit cards. Being naturally a tightwad, I've never understood this mentality. I suspect all of the lottery winners who declare bankruptcy are probably like this to begin with.

It does force the issue, I suppose. I was in a position where I was making decent money, but my now ex wife thought it was her job to spend it all and rack up consumer debt like there was no tomorrow. So there's definitely a mindset involved - mine was earn and build, hers was waste and destroy.

Interesting question. I think I just sort of elided right over that in my reading. I guess I kind of envisioned futile small scale counteroffensives without really considering the specific nature of it. Maybe not so much voluntary suicide missions as troops ordered to make a hopeless advance as a delaying tactic for covering withdrawing German troops. Things were moving pretty fast as I understand it.

But I can't answer your question.

For me, I would keep 25 million.

Take the balance of 25 mil and divide in half - 12.5 mil and divide that between my son and daughter - 6.25 mil each.

Of the remaining 12.5, I would take half of that - 6.25, and divide that between my brother and sister (wife has no siblings), for 3.175 each.

Take the remaining 6.25 and divide in half for 3.175 and divide among 3 nephew/nieces for 1.058 each.

Remaining 3.175 is divided by 2 for 1.5875 and is divided among 5 cousins for $317,500 each.

The balance goes into a account for contingencies.

467 I watched the second hour of "Roots" last night - the part where Kunta Kinte is placed under Fiddler's tutelage to learn how to be a slave and to learn his new name is Toby.

This is where the racists who produced this movie made a mistake.

All the slaves a the Virginia plantation look well fed, well clothed, nobody in chains (except Toby), all reasonably happy (for slaves).

When Kunta runs away and is captured, all the master wants is for him to acknowledge his new name (and his new circumstances). As he is getting filleted with a whip (complete with nails and glass), he continually refuses to say his new name.

Instead of the admiration of his dignity, this scene brings out a feeling of "say your name, you obstinate idiot".

Afterward, the overseer tells the slaves to go home and for those from other plantations to go back to their homes.

Slaves from other plantations just visiting on their own? Sure thing.

Given that Kunta could have ended up a slave in Arab North Africa, or on a sugar plantation in the West Indies or Brazil, he certainly seems to have hit the lottery on places to be.

477 >> Raising the question, why some feel it necessary to destroy
>> the man who seemingly is a very decent and conservative

My position is this: there are consequences to being anti-Trump.

The MOST a French candidacy can do is knock a couple percent off Trump's vote, and maybe take back a few of the more principled NeverTrumpers from Hillary or the Libertarians.

It may affect the outcome.

It will not put a conservative in the White House.

It may put Hillary in the White House, which to my mind is the WORST of all possible outcomes. She is pretty much as guilty as Nixon was of the kinds of crimes that forced his resignation. There is no principled basis for putting a felon in the White House.

To my mind if you are a principled NeverTrumper you ought to be registered as a Democrat and ought to be beating the bushes for Bernie.

Bernie may be many bad things but he's at least as honest as the average Senator. And that in itself makes him vastly more qualified than Hillary.

Basically, they let the commander know if he can get away with bombing/shooting/dropping artillery on various targets. Also, they play the same role with the emergence of cyber warfare; there are legal implications when running a cyber attack through a neutral country's internet infrastructure.

I think you can make the case, that Obama would actually do less damage, because Garland's whole career has been using the courts to move to the left. Obama's is not. And for Garland being elevated to the Court will be his highest honor and he will do everything possible to advance his position. Whereas Obama will just be lazy. Why is it "valuable" to have a spoiler candidate do these things? Can't he simply advocate them as an opinion writer or activist?

The strategy here is to make sure Hillary wins, nobody takes issue with a figure like French or Kristol advocating for their brand of conservatism.

FWIW, Trump is better at advocating conservative issues than many former Republican Presidents like Nixon, Ford, HW Bush, etc.

Republicans like Nixon were advocating wage and price controls and yet somehow many of these same NeoCons were working for him and weren't advocating spoiler candidates, but apparently Trump is just too liberal and needs to be stopped.

I would argue that of the Bernie, Biden, Kerry, Hillary list Biden's probably the best option.

He's an old schmoozer, and unless his experience at VP and watching Obama hammer the GOP majority with no consequences has 'adjusted' his outlook on the Executive, he's likely to be a much more 'cooperative' President.

I would probably take Bernie next. I'm inclined toward deep mistrust for Kerry over his role as Obama's puppet in the Iran deal, and I'm NeverHillary for the reasons I've outlined.

It's exactly this kind of reaction that Trump supporters should carefully avoid. For French to get on even a few ballots will take enormous expense and rapid action, and no one so far has talked at all about raising money or organizing rapid movements for ballot petitions. They are already late for some states and soon will be for most states. French is no threat to Trump at all.

The whole purpose is to demonstrate to conservatives that Trump and his supporters are ugly, mindless extremists who will throw mud first and think later, even at a truly honorable man.

Don't give in to temptation. If Trump has even the slimmest dreams of attracting conservative votes, treat French well. Speak respectfully. Your candidate will win more support that way.

Posted by: MTF, Amity and Enmity at June 01, 2016 12:19 PM (/m8T6)

526 Part of being NeverTrump is the statement that Trump really is bad on a level that just can't be supported, even if the support is only a vote, even if the alternative is worse. The AP made some calls about Trump's vet donations and found out they only came after the Post reported he hadn't made them, months after he said he'd done it. Trump spent the press conference naming reporters who hadn't played along with him on the story. Then some documents in the Trump University case were unsealed and the scheme looks like a grand plan to fleece vulnerable people out of money they couldn't afford. Neither of those things really recommend Trump as someone worth supporting.

527 The whole "will the conservative movement survive Trump?" is stupid.

The idea that an ideology "dies" when a Republican President does something "non conservative" is based on what exactly?

The Tea Party basically sprang up in response to TARP and the corporate bailouts that Bush signed into law.

Even after securing the nomination, most of what I'm hearing from Trump is WAY more conservative than what I usually hear from Republican Presidential candidates at this stage.

Posted by: Maritime at June 01, 2016 12:20 PM (H8A77)

528 I'd put good money behind this:

If the best day of his life were election day, from here French might be able to garner 5 votes in a hundred. Probably not that much because from here, people with even an ounce of reason, would know that their vote would be thrown away.

But yeah. Go French, you Francophiles.

Ross Perot was the idea. Only steal from the R candidate. And they didn't treat him particularly nice and he ended up with 10%. Before that it was Bull Moose and kept-us-out-of-war Wilson was elected.

What will kill French is he threatens sinecures by opposing Trump. Most of his peers have decided Trump is a fart that has a span of 8 years or less and that their sinecures are secure with him. Trump just announced he isn't going to go after McConnell or Ryan. Now that he has the nomination Trump is assuring everyone that he won't go after their sweet federal money. Trump wants to win. Ask W about medicare part D and the $400 tax rebate before you go off on Trump. Also Hasterd, McConnell, Bush.

Considered by whom? There have always been strutting peacocks who pop onto the battlefield (figuratively, from a safe distance) to try to glom onto the glory. It's been happening since the days when cavemen were throwing sticks and rocks at each other.

These days, it is a well-known tradition for non-combat personnel, mostly officers, to fly into the theater, stay long enough to get their "combat" awards, then fly out again.

As I said before, nobody who has actually been shot at considers that to be combat duty.

A president - and, to a lesser extent, a candidate - determines the ideological direction of the party. Bush was a neocon, and since his election Neo-Conservatism has been the dominant strand in Conservatism.

Neo-Conservatism is, for the most part, a foreign policy school of thought that emphasizes the role of America as a beacon of democracy - an aggressive beacon. On domestic issues, it hews fairly closely to Movement Conservative orthodoxy.

The change Trump is trying to make to the party is far, far more radical. He is remaking the GOP as a European-style nationalist party, a party that supports enlarging government. In the process, he is co-opting supposedly "Conservative" outlets such as talk radio and Fox.

Essentially, Trump is taking away Conservative's electoral vehicle and media voice. Hil could never, never do this. She is an attacking outsider, and Conservatives would almost certainly coalesce against her. Trump will - and is - eating the movement from within.

576 There is a wide margin between attacking his service, and asking what he did to deserve his Bronze Star.

I would really like to know where he falls within that margin.

He did not do anything dishonorable to get it...The Army gives those out like candy. So take it for what it is worth, but no need to critisize him for that. That is just the way it works and he volunteered and he was on thearter and that is A OK with me

577 Essentially, Trump is taking away Conservative's electoral vehicle and media voice. Hil could never, never do this. She is an attacking outsider, and Conservatives would almost certainly coalesce against her. Trump will - and is - eating the movement from within.

Well said. I'm not going along for the ride.

578 561 Anyone E-7 and above would be awarded Bronze Stars, and not even have to leave the wire.

I had to escort a soldier to see a JAG officer in Taji back in 2006, and the guy had his body armor still in wrapped in plastic collecting dust.

He got a BS BS.

I wonder if those who support the Precious would be going after this line of attack if French had bucked the NRO orthodoxy and come out in favor of Trump.

Not gonna play word games with you, context is and was everything. Folks can shriek about how they were all offended, but that's an emotion, not a fact.

You can hear it your way if you feel you have to, but don't say I defend him. I hate the idea of Trump, but if it's the choice over Hillary then so be it.
French is nothing more than a distraction to keep the current bunch of hogs at the trough.

581 >>Prosecutors said Alexandria Vera had a sexual relationship with one of her students and also got pregnant by the eighth-grader.

Sorry, I don't care how hot she is, if it's wrong for a Catholic priest to prey on 13 year old boys, it's wrong for their teacher to prey on them, too.
And now she's having an 8th grader's baby - sick.

582 "Movement Conservative orthodoxy. "

I think you mean George Bush the elder's Compassionate Conservatism.

I hadn't realized it had already had to change names.

Cronyism and vote buying smells just as corrupt under any other name.

Paul Ryan is called a conservative. He calls himself a conservative. He's not a conservative. Bill Kristol is a conservative like Paul Ryan is a conservative.

Is David Frenxh a Paul Ryan conservative or is he a bona fide conservatve?

586 I'd still state the same, Cody, since I'm not voting.

Fact is this, BSs and MSMs were handed out like candy if you were above a certain rank.

*shrugs*

Like NGU said, he volunteered and served.

He's still a FOBBIT.

Now, I have no idea if this French guy has been shot at or not. It
would be nice if he would come out and talk about what he did to earn
that Bronze Star he wears.
=====

Guess it is time to remind the horde how much lawfare is a part of the modern military. I think there is a guy right now sentenced to life for killing an Afghani 'civilian'. Having a JAG corps guy around is a gain for the regular shooting-type soldier.

589 A president - and, to a lesser extent, a candidate - determines the ideological direction of the party. Bush was a neocon, and since his election Neo-Conservatism has been the dominant strand in Conservatism.

Posted by: person

Bush was actually nominated and won election as advocating against that type of intervention, it was after 9/11 that he co opted the NeoCon nonsense that Kristol advocated and left us with 8 years of Obama.

McCain was the nominee on a very extreme NeoCon platform, yet now we have Trump as the nominee. So this can easily flip on a dime.

Most of this "we have to stop Trump for the sake of conservatism!!!" is just sour grapes and rooted in personality conflicts with the candidate himself.

Or genuine ideological differences to go along with his temperament. Some of us really do hold his past statements and support against him as who he really is.

591 "And now she's having an 8th grader's baby - sick."

Female hormones? Or poor training in morals?

Be five years before he has to pay child support. I wonder if a judge will throw him in jail if he can't pay and if he will have to pay back all the WIC and EBT payments from 13 to 17?

592 586 I'd still state the same, Cody, since I'm not voting.

I never served so I'm wary of any criticism of what appears to be a perfectly honorable career. French chose to serve and he didn't turn down a medal that he may or may not have done anything special to earn. Unlike Kerry, he doesn't appear to do anything more than state it as part of his overall biography. If part of supporting Trump means that French has to be torn down on that basis, it's another reason I don't think I can vote for him.

Vote for Hillary. :-)

Its your fault for being born in a country that had liberty and let it slip away before you were born. (This is a common theme in satire. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy explored this multiple times.)

Can't win.
Can't break even.
Can't quit the game.

Someone who honestly believes the 3 lines above and still is considered a good person that people want to be around and ask for advice and help epitomize "soldier on".

595 "McCain was the nominee"

Because of time in service. GOPe engineered his path to victory quite a little better than the Dems have Hillary.

GOPe tried to fine tune their process and Trump figured out a way to use it to his advantage. Cruz won all the caucus and convention states and maneuvered to turn delegates and boom! Trump destroyed him with PR. boo hoo Trump didn't play by the GOPe rules. He used PR! Without asking our sugar daddys first or using approved vendors.

596 One simple question:

1. What's the point of David French running for president?

And spare me the bullshit about doing it on principle.

Posted by: Misheard Lyrics Guy at June 01, 2016 12:18 PM (rCQo0)

After NR's "Never Trump" issue Trump still got through to the nomination. They did not have enough influence to stop that. If Trump goes all the way and wins the office, what sort of influence do you think they will have in the future? What sort could NR then claim? What sort could any of the authors of those articles claim?
