Whalers
Joseph Mallord William Turner 1845

Turner was seventy years old when Whalers debuted to mixed reviews at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1845. Its subject proved elusive, as the English novelist William Thackeray observed: "That is not a smear of purple you see yonder, but a beautiful whale, whose tail has just slapped a half-dozen whale-boats into perdition; and as for what you fancied to be a few zig-zag lines spattered on the canvas at hap-hazard, look! they turn out to be a ship with all her sails." Apparently Turner undertook the painting—which was returned to him—for the collector Elhanan Bicknell, who had made his fortune in the whale-oil business.

Even so, you can still sense the energy and the movement, particularly of the whale.

31 In 1785, due to his mother showing signs of the mental disturbance for which she was admitted first to St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics in Old Street in 1799 and then Bethlem Hospital in 1800,[8] the young Turner was sent to stay with his maternal uncle, Joseph Mallord William Marshall, in Brentford, then a small town on the banks of the River Thames west of London.

34 Actually, I really like the painting. The whale dominates as it should but the distant ship seems to be coming out of mist. Very evocative and appealing. It also has the feel of an experiment: leaning to suggestive rather than delineated or realistic.

55 Turner is one of those artists whose style was apparently ahead of its time. He created vibrant colors, and the subject matter was not sufficiently bland or religious for the hoity toity of the time.

And apparently he could not paint the human face to save his life, so he didn't try.

I love his work, have a few reproductions at home. I have not seen any of his work in person. He's probably the one artist for whom that is a personal goal, to see the real thing with my own to eyes.

The TrigglyPuffs rise, and wobble off the bus, the suspension creaking and groaning as the weight is reduced. Reuben Kincaid watches in horrified fascination as they TrigglyPuffs line up and start their keening shouts, their arm flab wobbling, causing the air to shake. The gate guards fall back in confusion and fear as the sonic keening brings down the gates, and like a herd of elephants off to the salad bar, the TrigglyPuffs charge in.

"That's that," Bernie says as he sets the bus in motion.
"But what will happen to them?" Reuben asks.
"Hillary will destroy them - they don't call her Cankella DeVil for nothing. Don't worry, there are plenty more of those in the asylum."
"You got them at a university."
"Same thing." Bernie then begins to sing:
"California here I come
something something something from
Open up your Crazy Gates
California here I come!"

That was another thing about his stuff. He painted from perspectives that confused people. I suppose if one considered them to be direct representations of the real physical world, it was hard for people to figure out where he was, where his subject matter was, and how to relate it to their known concepts of the world.

Or, one could not try to orient the subject to the world, and admire the sheer brilliance of his use of paint to convey color.

Funny how we don't hear about "grim milestones" anymore.

Would be nice if there were a candidate who slammed the MFM for their bias.

But then, such a candidate would be a vulgar parvenu who wouldn't appeal to the oh-so-important moderates.

Ah, well, perhaps the GOP will stroke their chins thoughtfully. That always puts the fear of God into the press.

Our VA gives excellent care to our vets - I'm sorry that this is not always the case. We do send our vets to the private sector when they need care that we cannot give but as with every government agency - it is far from perfect.

"Not only does Sony need Ghostbusters to be an otherworldly hit, they need the property to spawn a trilogy, if not become a full-on phenomenon," says Bock. "Otherwise, it's back to square one."

No, say it ain't so. A Ghostbuster *trilogy* with a cast of flannel-shirt lesbians? For all that is good and decent in this world, I hope this pic flops miserably. I hope it's a 'Heaven's Gate' level flop. I hope it flops so bad that nobody who wrote, directed, acted, or worked on the sets will ever be able to find work in Hollywood again. to suddenly dump over 1 million veterans into the system would overwhelm it. Not to mention, veterans need specialized care that the general public doesn't need such as combat PTSD and related mental and physical illness. A vet that has lost his or her limbs and has extreme trauma needs to be around fellow vets that know their experience and can relate in a way that others can not no matter how "educated" they are.

Like being at the aquarium and the mostly-white tour group is told how shark hunting is destroying the population. Turns out, the hunting is for shark fin soup. None of us in the group had ever had shark fin soup. Perhaps they should talk to the 1,000,000,000 people who *do* culturally eat shark fin soup instead of trying to guilt just over 300,000,000 who don't.

I think this is where Trump's position on giving veterans vouchers is the way to go. The VA should spend it's resources on developing care that is central to the unique needs of a veteran. The more run of the mill stuff, such as diabetes care, heart and blood vessel care, etc. that are not a unique battle type of injury or disease would be handled by the vet's choice of private health care.

The vet would receive much better and faster care for those types of problems and then the VA could actually provide what should be expert, not typically found elsewhere care for mental, emotional, and rehabilitative care for vets in a setting that has support from other vets with similar issues, because the VA system has been relieved of the burden of common care.

And there would need to be good communication between the private docs and military docs in the two locations. No excuse for that not to happen today with the technology available.

Even without the biased reporting that Sharkman points out that usually follows these shootings, it's going to take a number of days, or even weeks, for all the details to get sorted out and verified. 334 With regards to the VA, all I have to go on is the care my father got.

For the most part he got fairly good service from the VA hospitals and doctors in the Bronx and Manhattan where he went most of the time.

When he moved to Colorado he got even better service and positively heroic service when he suffered a massive heart attack, sadly dad died from his heart attack but I have nothing but respect and admiration for the nurses and doctors who cared for him.

336 There is already a hybrid thing for veteran care called TRI-CARE which is as I understand it a VA funded health insurance system.

Vouchers would not be a cure-all. Think medicaid/medicare. Government funded insurance in the biggest PITA insurance any doc or hospital ever deals with. What might help the VA more. Make a rule that any administrative job can only be filled by an actual veteran with recommendations from those they served with. And take away any union and most government restrictions on firing people that are just chair warmers.

338 "Only college freshman libertarians believe that the US Court system could be improve by being run as a for-profit entity. "

The current justice system is as non-profit as the Clinton Foundation.

The Ferguson tension has been created by the extraction of fines from poor people. All the people who understood or intuited what was going on left Ferguson. Happens everywhere. Detroit is the old example. Chicago the new. State level is California.

In New York it was Eric Garner selling single cigarettes. He was hurting the sales tax shakedown, the Medicaid business (both the fraud and the institutional if you can find a distinction), and was scaring away the marks (he was a big black guy). Can't have the Medicaid/Obamacare markers doing anything that gives them a sense of dignity and cuts into the vig. Kasich found that in the Bible.

342 I don't think the free market would solve all problems. I just think it
would work better and more efficiently than a government program.
There are some benefits of a VA center that a private sector may not be
able to provide - the connection with other soldiers in one place.

I agree and would like to see that tried.

345 I assume that lifetime VA health care (such that it is) is a large part of recruitment/retention. I also think it's fair and just. Risking everything (and everyone who enlists could potentially see combat) should come with a permanent benefit. Just as committing a felony should come with a permanent punishment (no Vote).

347 I've been told, possibly erroneously, that the VA is Medicare. That a veteran will be sent elsewhere if that veteran doesn't have the same qualifications as would be required for Medicare.

I believe this is so because that would maximize the return for DC and its Lobbyist masters. Any written law or regulation disputing this would be compared against the respect that has been shown for the US Constitution by the SCOTUS, Congress, and the POTUS.

(people who dispute. Sorry. Can't believe you even if what you say is true because Obama and Bill Clinton with a side order of George Herbert Walker Bush.)

348 153 Here's a question for the horde: do you think the VA would be in better condition if McCain had won?
Posted by: Chupacabra at May 31, 2016 11:01 AM
-----------------
Yes, but only marginally.

The VA system is like the NHS in Britain ---overall inefficient but varied on the ground. There are some very good med centers and some very bad ones. The differences are largely attributable to the competence and attitude of local management.

Obama has the Common Core mentality. "Reform" for him means highly politicized, ideological micro-management applied indiscriminately across the board.
This hampers the good local managers, sometimes severely, while doing nothing to improve the bad ones.

The difference between McCain and Obama is that the old fart is not an ideological fanatic determined to use all institutions as a vehicle for the Movement. He is reactionary enough to see the VA as an organization whose primary purpose is to serve the needs of vets.

McCain doesn't hate vets the way Obama does and would at least listen to them. He himself comes first, to be sure, but vets aren't dead last on the rest of his list.

So yeah, McCain would have been better --- or at least not nearly as awful.

I should clarify and not be wishy-washy. I do not agree. I do not agree that every and all veterans should get "free" healthcare merely because they are a veteran. I'm not talking about those injured or who suffer from their duties. But I'm not really sure if VA hospitals cover those people or not - especially if they are not medicare eligible.

355 "Can any veteran use a VA hospital? What if a person was never in combat or never injured? Or is it only reserved for those veterans who were in combat or who were injured in combat?"

No, I think you need to prove that your complaint is "service related". That can be a challenge. I know a guy who was in the Navy band that is using the system.

Wife worked for 20 years at the SF VA hospital. That particular facility is beautiful, I am sure not a more naturally beautiful setting can be found in all of the USA.
Having said that, she put in for retirement at the earliest convenience, not one day later. She would come home in tears often.

356 The VA has never worked well across it's entire system, because it is government supplied, and having faith that there is some magic world where it would suddenly be a good system is unicorn farts. Maybe I missed something, but I am aware of literally no evidence on this earth supporting the idea.

If veterans had vouchers, by the way, that isn't the end of the VA. It merely means the Vets no longer have to tolerate whatever crap sandwich a particular hospital tries to serve them, whether government owned or private. War-injured Vets should be entitled to go anywhere. If the VA is better at something specific, then go there, but if the private sector can do it better, go there.

Generally speaking, if the medical problem is service-related, then the care is there. If it is not service related, then there is a means test. There are priority levels:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/hbyrx29

I, for instance, do not have any service-related disability, and my income is beyond the means test, ergo, I am generally not qualified for VA care.

It is worth noting that the service-related and means testing has only been implemented in recent years, thus there are thousands of Vets receiving VA care who could pay for it themselves and are being treated for problems that have nothing to do with their service.

In my experience, only a minority are receiving treatment for anything service-related, and many are perfectly capable of paying their own way.
