7 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, May 15, 2016. On this day in 1928 Walt Disney character Mickey Mouse premiered in his first cartoon, Plane Crazy (a test production). And Disney has managed to get the copyright extended every year since. Current copyright law now is generally 70 years from the death of the author unless it is a "works for hire" and that gets complicated. Disney died in 1966 so Mickey Mouse copyright should expire in 2036; unless Disney makes some more "political contributions".

I took one look at the photo and knew it was an "Illegal Express" bus. It is companies that pick them (after payment) up near the border and disperse them throughout the US. Some of them take them back to Mexico to see momma and shuttle the money around. These things are dangerous road hogs, speed, tailgate and act like they own the road. A massive wreck is no surprise. It is almost certainly registered in Mexico so good luck with lawsuits for the dead and injured.

It's a bit more nuanced, according to my internet knowledge.

Saint Dorothy is the patron saint of horticulture, brewers, brides, florists, and gardeners.

St. Isadore the Farmer (not just St. Isadore, one of the Fathers of the Church, who is a different Saint) is the patron saint of farmers.

Saint Phocas is the patron saint of gardeners, agricultural workers, farm workers, farmers, and fieldhands.

Some overlap here.

Our priest has said that all those saints who were removed from the calendar are still considered saints, but the calendar couldn't contain them all and this some of the "lesser" ones were taken off.

In the 70s I attended St. Christopher's, which my dad called "Mr. Christopher's" since he was no longer listed on the calendar.

104 Fast forward to the debacle that took place yesterday, where the Washington Post absolutely hammered Trump for allegedly pretending to be a spokesman named "John Miller" in an interview with a People magazine reporter just so Trump could brag about himself and set some things straight with the media.

However, here is the twist: Sue Carswell, the People magazine reporter who can be heard on the tape with the "spokesman", swears she didn't leak the tape to anyone. As a matter of fact, she said she doesn't even know where the tape is, and assumes it got trashed when moving apartments years ago. Carswell claims the only other person who could have possibly had that recording was... drum roll... Donald Trump.

While nobody knows for certain whether or not it was actually Trump on the other end of that recording, it probably wouldn't surprise anyone to find out that it was The Donald himself - that master of media redirection - who leaked the tape to the Washington Post. After all, he had just created a buzz by saying Bezos was out to get him by any means necessary, and what better way to solidify that than with a "leaked" tape that the Washington Post would clearly run with. Also, with the news out that Trump would be the first presidential candidate not to disclose tax returns in 40 years, why not create a fresh news cycle to take the public's mind off of that little nuisance.

The Donald may have just masterfully played the entire media universe for fools.

Again.

118 ROSE: Remember, he's a New Yorker - doesn't own a gun. Zilkha started hearing from gun owners who hated this idea. They figure that once a smart gun was on the market, it was only a matter of time before the government said all guns had to be smart guns. That's why people like Alan Rice at the New Hampshire Firearms Coalition rallied against the smart gun.

ALAN RICE: It was a bunch of people who were just fed up. They felt that this company that had been around for over a hundred years was betraying their customers.

ROSE: Rice says there was so much anger about Colt's smart gun research that some gun owners actually boycotted the gun company. So before Zilkha could reach those millions of new customers, he had to win over the police and skeptical gun owners. And Colt bet big that showing off their state-of-the-art smart gun prototype would help. The company invited a reporter from The Wall Street Journal in for a demonstration.

VANESSA O'CONNELL: They were feeling really confident that they had finally got this technology down.

ROSE: Vanessa O'Connell was that reporter. She went up to Connecticut to interview the CEO at the time, the guy Donald Zilkha had hired to run Colt. An engineer brought out the smart gun, and he explained that it was only supposed to fire if the shooter was wearing a special wristband with a little radio frequency transmitter inside. The CEO put on the wristband and went to pull the trigger.

O'CONNELL: And it didn't shoot. Just silence. You can imagine what was going through my mind at the time. If you have a gun that is supposed to shoot when you need it to shoot and it's not going to shoot, you have a big problem.

ROSE: The timing was awful. Just when Colt needed to convince potential customers they could trust this new smart gun, here's a front-page story in The Wall Street Journal saying they can't. Not long after, Colt pulled the plug on smart gun research. Seventeen years later, no American gun company wants to pick up where Colt left off. Joel Rose, NPR News, New York.

134 AFA President Tim Wilmon posted this update from the meeting with Target executives:

I met face-to-face with Target executives and spoke to them on your behalf, urging them to end this boycott by protecting women and children in their stores.

I offered a common-sense approach and a reasonable solution to the issue of transgendered customers: a unisex bathroom. Target should keep separate facilities for men and women, but for the trans community and for those who simply like using the bathroom alone, a single occupancy unisex option should be provided.

Target representatives were gracious and respectful, but sadly, they rejected our offer. They repeated what Target CEO and Chairman Brian Cornell said yesterday during an interview on CNBC, "We're going to continue to embrace our belief in diversity and inclusion...," code-words for sticking with its dangerous policy of allowing men use women's dressing and bathrooms.

139 The whole thing going on with public schools being ordered to accommodate transgendered students under title IX is ridiculous. Gender identity isn't covered in the statute, and there is a case being adjudicated right now as to whether or not schools should be forced to allow a student to use the facilities of the gender they identify as. You can't just change the law. Here's my outrage. People are perfectly fine allowing crap to get by so long as their view is the one being held up. Never mind the fact that it erases the whole "nation of laws, not men" thing. Also, public schools abridge the rights of students routinely in the name of safety.

Well the SCOTUS created the new right of "equal dignity" when they issued their abomination SSM ruling and in this new post constitutional post law world, law is what unelected beaurocrats and judges say it is.

The legislative branch is for all intents and purposes obsolete.

Sure they craft and write the laws but most of what they vomit forth are nonsensical and poorly written enabling acts that the executive uses as its jumping off point for mischief.

The GOP that controls both houses could easily jump into this fight and say, hey buddy we wrote the law and it doesn't say that so knock it off.

But they won't because they are chicken shit and at the end of the day they will just use this to fund raise.

The GOP needs to be destroyed.

164 There's a very good article about antidiscrimination laws linked at the book thread. I'll link it here in case anyone wants to discuss it, so as not to derail the book thread too much:

http://freedomdaily.com/185435-2/

The party's other candidates aren't quite as extreme in their statism though none of them will make an unqualified stand for your Thirteenth Amendment right not to be held in involuntary servitude--which is exactly what private sector nondiscrimination laws are.

Yep, I've been saying that for years. The civil rights laws were correct in stopping government discrimination, but they went entirely too far by making private discrimination illegal. Another term for private discrimination is "freedom of association".

There is a direct line from the civil rights laws of the 1960s to modern-day smoking bans in private restaurants, or forcing Christian-owned bakeries to cater a gay wedding.

If the owners of Target wish to voluntarily implement their transgendered bathroom policy, that is their right, and it is my right to refuse to shop there. The same principle should apply to all other forms of "discrimination".

The lunch counters in the 1950s were segregated by law. The Jim Crow laws were government-mandated discrimination. The proper solution was to repeal them, but let the business owners determine who they wished to serve. That would be freedom for both owners and customers. Let the market decide.

30 I did not make Philadelphia Magazine's annual Top Physicians list this year. They have an irrational bias against interns. I won't have that as an excuse next year. The pressure is on.

BTW, did I tell y'all that I passed the Step 3 exams and am now fully licensed? That means a raise July 1.

175 Sidebar article on Cuban,Mexican, Russian pot cartels in Colorado is interesting.

The exact opposite of what the supporters of legalizing pot has occurred. They insisted it would get rid of the cartels and black market pot growers and sellers, and instead, it has opened the doors to them moving into Colorado since they feel safe growing pot in plain sight in a legalized area.

So, make it legal everywhere and the cartels can go suck it.

177 The cartels became immensely powerful due to the decades of criminalization. Like the Mafia, they have their tentacles everywhere, from legitimate businesses to politicians to law enforcement.

It is going to be very hard to shove that genie back in the bottle. But they were indeed created by the drug laws.

Yes, I know.

So make it legal everywhere.

As Y not says, the cartels are using the legalization of MJ in Colorado to run illegal operations there to grow, then ship back to Mexico.
