Brazil's Hardcore Leftist President Suspended For Lying About State of Economy During Reelection Campaign; Will Face Trial In Senate

So a socialist president lied about the economy in order to be reelected?

Imagine that.

We're lucky that couldn't happen here. That kind of thing only happens in third world communist hellholes.

Meanwhile, the country isn't just in the midst of its worst recession in 100 years (which President Rousslef covered up), but also in the midst of a major Zika virus epidemic which is, get this, also being covered up.

People are calling for the Olympics to be delayed or moved to a different venue.

I think the problem with the U.S. is that our current political situation incentivizes partisanship to a much stronger degree than most democracies, to the point that a third of the country will dig in their heels and fight to defend their team regardless of how deserving they are of impeachment. Either side senses it has too much to lose from ever conceding any political victory to the other. In our country, unlike most democratic countries, losing elections is an awful lot like being conquered by a foreign empire. You can't even decide on a local level what your state's public bathroom laws should be. I suppose it's just a theory, but I think it explains not just why we can't hold our leaders to better account, but also why we're stuck being dominated by a 2 party system where most Western countries have multiple right and left parties.
I personally think we should stop being sentimental babies about it, and have a friendly divorce between red states and blue states. I think we'll hate each other a lot less when we're not forcing each other to be bound by the laws of an alien ideology, we'll be better able to hold our leaders to account because the stakes of losing a national election will be much lower, our geopolitcal allies like Israel would have a back-up America for when blue state America elects an anti-Zionist or red state America elects paleo-conservative isolationist, blue states would lose their motivating incentive to import millions of new voters from south of the border, and I think the blue states would quickly become more receptive to conservative economic ideas when reality forces it on them rather than having it pushed on them in the partisan sphere. I'd like to think that this would also mean we wouldn't be tempted to put all our chips in on an idiotic Hail Mary move, like electing Trump leader of the free world.

Even then, Rio and Sao Paulo had "security" issues - but recall what an almost quaint definition we're talking about. While being mugged in Gloria or Copacabana or certainly other areas closer to downtown was an issue, violence was rare.

After my time there, drugs arrived, big-time, along with the much more violent gang activity that usually accompanies it.

Anyway, I would hope and assume that much the country remains more normal. Far to the north, and far to the south of Rio/Sao Paulo, in places foreigners rarely visit (or used to, anyway), not only were there fantastic places and towns and beaches and people, but a much simpler life, slower pace, and much less crime.

Well, I would say that it depends upon Trump.
Would he adopt attitude/actions that conservatives regard as valid so far as the proper role of government is concerned? That doesn't seem a harsh requirement.

So then it came to the awards. Nine awards were given. Nine out of nine of the awards went to girls.

Sure, there's certainly no way to divide things so that everyone is happy. I live in the bluest country of a purple state myself. But large groups of people living as minority ideologies in their country would be the case regardless, it's true everywhere. San Francisco culture has long been outside the mainstream ideologies of the United States, that doesn't mean life sucks if you're a stereotypical San Franciscan. But I think it would helpful to people living in either set of states to have a model for how each mode of government operates side by side and compare the two, and I think we could improve the feedback process of the democratic system by having a system where trying to course correct a bit on the foreign policy decisions of the Bush administration doesn't necessarily result in a culture war where Christians are suddenly being treated like bigots, and liberals trying to get a Canadian-style healthcare system don't wind up with a corporate/government monstrosity like Obamacare that makes right and left alike miserable.I'm personally of the belief that conservatism eventually asserts itself, like gravity, when an economy goes too far into economic fantasyland without a release (California can afford some flights from reality, because it's hard to move silicon valley and Hollywood to Texas on a whim, Norway can afford some flights from reality because they're sitting on an ocean of oil, etc.). I think Democrats have some luxuries to experiment with or excuse the failures of their utopianism created by our relationship, that would probably not exist in my theoretical split country. Their states have a big wealth advantage, which have existed since well before they were implementing their leftist economic policies, but continue to be big money makers for historical reasons. I think comparing red states like Utah and Texas to blue states like California gives us a glimpse of which system bears more promise for the future, but I think sharing a federal government muddles such observations for people. I think most of the authoritarian impulses on both the right and left come from having such an antagonistic, divided culture, and that both countries left to their own devices would be pretty tolerable places to live. I doubt the left would so enthusiastically engage in short-term gain, cultural subversion insanity (promoting rioting, welfare benefits for immigrants, etc.) without the specter of us as a boogie man, assuming they're not just on cruise control with that stuff at this point. And blue state America couldn't be that much worse a place to live than, say, France, could it?

Medical science has been aware for a while that APAP (acetominophen) is bad for you in high doses. That's why they cut the hard stuff (hydrocodone/oxycodone) with APAP, to make it harded for people to abuse them.

The sad thing is, because of that, if you abuse painkillers, you're far more likely to die from kidney failure due to an APAP overdose than you are to suffer any ill effects from a hydro/oxy overdose.

I've seen them basically de-classify APAP as an NSAID - it doesn't have any significant anti-inflammatory effect in lab studies. It's purely an analgesic. NSAID's are almost certainly the way to go, especially if you have other factors that put you at risk for liver or kidney issues.

My liver *may* have regenerated by now....if not I don't stress it much anymore.

I am not a big coffee guy, I abused pep pills as a teen and drank whole pots in my 20s...so anyway when we moved to Aberdeen I tried to drink n coffee and got the shakes to the point I thought I was on the verge of a cardiac event and this is when I ran.

If I cash out I have earned it.

I begged God for the length of time to see my son was likely to be a good man.

He granted me that time.

My last neurologist was incompetent - the regime he laid out for me more or less brought me closer to the big sleep, by virtue of making me want to take the dirt-nap.

Yeah, yeah, I know... treatment for my condition is symptomatic, but this guy, he made all the sequelae worse. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, of course, but stil..

The new guy, he treats the worst, most bothersome symptoms, but does all he can to avoid making the depression and fatigue worse. So, yeah, I shake more than I used to, but I can remember things and don't want to die.

So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

And here's how that will work:

Your donated organ will be given, most likely, to someone from an immigrant family, none of whom are organ donors themselves, and who would never approve such a procedure on any of their own.

Doc here in CA told me about an individual who asked for and received a donor kidney, then was killed in a car wreck a month later. Doc asked to remove the DONOR kidney for use in another recipient. Family, through a translator, said, "Infidel pig! Of course not!" Or words to that effect.

I don't have a donor sticker on my license any longer. I did for years. Not now.

If you take your pills in the recommended doses, no. They tend to cut the opioids with like 300 mg of APAP a pill, and I've read that you're usually safe under 4 grams a day. But in rare cases people have gotten permanent liver damage at as low as 2 grams. So that's 7 pills, which seems like a lot, but if you're in extreme pain, you could easily go above that.

In other words if you take govt approved acetaminophen and croak your liver it's OK. If you take aspirin and bleed out he goes to jail.

As for me, I have never found acetaminophen anywhere near as effective for pain as aspirin or ibuprofen.
I more or less switch off those two if I need something ---- but I am very, very blessed not to have major pain problems.

When I was on active duty, the Army's answer to everything was 800mg of ibuprofen. But like Margarita DeVille, I apparently have a high pain tolerance. I won't take anything stronger than ibuprofen...if that doesn't work, I just suck it up. I refuse to take that other stuff.

Doc here in CA told me about an individual who asked for and received a donor kidney, then was killed in a car wreck a month later. Doc asked to remove the DONOR kidney for use in another recipient. Family, through a translator, said, "Infidel pig! Of course not!" Or words to that effect.

I don't have a donor sticker on my license any longer. I did for years. Not now.

They claim it's there as a secondary analgesic, but from what I've read it's 99% column B. It's there to stop junkies from abusing it. In the meantime, it kills law-abiding citizens who don't know how dangerous APAP can be even in seemingly low doses.

Okay, it's more than just junkies - lots of people abuse Rx drugs who aren't what we'd consider 'drug addicts.' But it's still a case where, IMHO, the cure is worse than the disease.

Bingo. Reciprocity isn't enough, not in light of the free-rider problem. It has to be contractually enforceable reciprocity.

That's basically what Excedrin is, but they had to change the phenacetin to APAP because phenacetin is illegal nowadays.

And if you go up to Canada, you can get the same pill but with codeine instead of aspirin.
