7 I think most everyone saw the Wendy's kiosks coming in the wake of a minimum wage hike. Their action proves that the actual minimum wage is zero.

I'm sure those workers who were laid off really appreciate the unions getting their nice fat pay increases at their expense. And I'm SO happy that an avenue for my kids to get a summer/after school job has been closed by those cockweasels.

There should not even be a minimum wage. The reason is, wages are not about what a person is worth. They are about what the particular JOB is worth to the one needing it done.

Tell that to a leftists and get spit upon.

10 More on the bathroom wars:

The Obama administration, in an effort to protect the privacy rights of all students, is suggesting that student uncomfortable with the new order use a separate single occupant restroom. Hopefully they have shower stalls in them as well since the new decree covers locker rooms as well.

And still Obama has approval ratings around 50% and many of those that disprove are from the far left that think Obam he is not radical enough. The problem with the country is not Obama and his sycophants. It is the dumbed down, citizenry.

    The question is 'why?'.

Border Patrol agents have been told by Obama administration officials to not give notice to appear for hearings to border crossers who have violated immigration regulations.

Make any effort to raise money or accepting anything (other than minor shit) by any elected federal official a felony.

Let their potential opponent raise as much money as they want from whatever source as long as it's all disclosed immediately on the internet. Have a third party accounting firm hold the money in an escrow account.

At a date certain prior to the primary and another prior to the election, the Treasury matches the amount to the incumbent.

This is piss change. Nickels and dimes. But it would change the way Washington works.

Wait a minute --- using single occupant, gender-neutral bathrooms is a hardship for transgenders. We've seen that argument made in court by a 6 year old who sued his private elementary school. He said this made him feel different, and he deserved to feel accepted by using the girls bathroom.

    I didn't explain it thoroughly.

The incumbent never touches the money.

All the cash, whether it's the challenger or incumbent, is handled by a third party accounting firm. If the challenger raises 2 million, 2 million is deposited into the incumbent's escrow account.

At the end of the election, win or lose, anything left over in the incumbent's account is returned to the Treasury (hard to imagine they wouldn't spend it all). For the challenger, anything left over is returned on a pro-rated basis to the contributors.

The main point is that once someone is elected, they should never be in a position to either ask for or receive money from anyone. It should be a crime.

"This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken--it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes."

As long as private schools accept no federal funding (which most don't) and accepts no students who get federal aid (ruled as federal aid to school by liberal court), then the government has no jurisdiction over them at all.

I could see John Roberts ruling that, as private schools use town or city services such as heat, water and electricity, they are, therefore, subject to state law, which, in turn, is subject to federal law (see the dog-eating crackhead and his hard-on for tranny bathrooms). . .therefore, you will obey.

But it's NOT a mystery. We have a pretty good idea what he will do. Furthermore his actions are consistent with doing what will benefit HIM and his BRAND above all considerations, even if it means screwing the little guy in the process. Trump is not the answer. He is part of the problem. And beyond that, he has an authoritarian streak in him and is a shallow thinker who buys into ridiculous conspiracy theories.

The Carthaginians had a long history of infant sacrifice to Ba'al, done by casting the infants into coals where they burned alive.

This was rampant during the Punic wars, when Carthage was losing. It was seen as a way to show your support to the gods of the city to convince them to support Carthage in its fight with Rome.

I always asked if the women of Carthage did not love their children, or were so callous that they would kill those they should love and protect?

And the answer is yes they loved their children, only monsters wouldn't. But the child sacrifices were voluntary, and enforced by both the priests and the women themselves. (There were accusations that the rich would buy children of peasants to sacrifice, and this was seen as cheating)

Think of it as virtue signalling on a major scale: it is not enough to raise your children, but to give all the children a valid world to live in and continue the culture, and by this sacrifice the women reaffirmed their belief in the validity of their culture, and both committed to it and did what magic they could to ensure its continuance.

In a way twisting your children is a fad, like keeping them from eating any fats 'because studies show fats are bad', and in a way it is like watching the women walk on bleeding and torn knees for the mile or more up the main road to the cathedral to show humility and atonement for their faith and for the world.

The pressures are enormous now, things are failing, even the clueless lefties feel it even if they don't understand it. Such signalling over the bodies of children come out of desperation, not love and confidence.

I wish I had a conclusion to draw from this, or some sort of prescription to save the children from their parents.

    I don't.

Make it relatively easy to open a private school to open up competition, and away you go.

    Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 13, 2016 09:07 AM (v6tlA)

Depends on how they work. I believe that the plan in TX (if it ever gets off the ground) is that the credit goes to the family who then must find a private institution who will accommodate them. That means that the schools will still not receive any "State" money.

My understanding is that there is at least one other State (CO? MO?) that already does it that way.

Another option, of course, is to home school. You can even set up a home-school co-op where you and several other parents share the teaching responsibilities.

And, of course, even in the absence of vouchers, if you can afford it - even with a little sacrifice - send your kids to private school anyway. At least in Texas, schools are partially funded based on head count (it's 90% of that amount which would fund the voucher for your kid), so every kid who is not in public school is money that public schools don't get. Plus, you'll be providing a better education which is much more in line with your own world-view and morality than in a public school.

First you have to amend your State constitution to eliminate the "right" to a State funded education.

Then you and leave it up to individual vote by referendum announced no later than 60 days BEFORE the election. That amendment to state that no school, public or private, will be allowed to accept any funds from the federal government or students who receive federal assistance in any form.

Or you could short circuit all federal shit by holding an Art V convention.

    Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 13, 2016 09:01 AM (v6tlA)

First off, you need to accept the premise that all citizens need to help pay for the education of children - even if you don't have kids. It's an investment so that the next generation can make enough money to continue funding the country.

It also helps to keep them out of jail, which is a major expense.

Once that is agreed on, the most efficient and effective way to translate the dollars into actual education is a pure voucher system.

No public schools. No teacher's union. No regulations on who can teach. No nothing, except for a test at the end of each year that shows the taxpayer that the voucher for that particular kid educated him to the standard for the age he is.

If the kid fails, the government appoints a representative to choose the educational option for the kid.

With this system, you can homeschool and keep the money as long as the kids learn at their grade level or above.

Unemployment. Get a couple of firings for "failure to perform" and it'll be really hard to get a new teaching job somewhere.

Private schools are very, very sensitive to parent complaints and very, very aware of the students' performance. Unlike public schools, or even publicly funded charter schools, a private school lives or dies by its *local* reputation. If a teacher is harming that reputation, they will be let go quite quickly.

Actually, in a pure voucher environment, a "teaching job" is something that is strictly between the teacher and the parent.

More than likely, individual teachers will lease a space very close to their clients (like in a strip mall) and have a classroom where they can handle maybe 10 kids who live within a few blocks.

I'm not a childless Libertarian, and I *also* reject the collectivist premise of public education.

Public education is (more accurately: "was") useful in a pragmatic sense because all kids do need education and consolidating that effort frees up more labor to do other things with more immediate dividends. As long as public education remained aligned with the basic cultural values (instead of being indoctrination centers for the New Left), and actually taught useful things, they were a perfectly acceptable means of educating children.

That stopped being the case long ago. Now schools are mostly about teaching non-whites that they're terribly oppressed and inferior and so only the Government can help them while teaching whites that they're evil, "privileged" tyrants who hate everyone who isn't like them.

When they're not doing that, they're either allowing unruly kids to bully (or actively assault) other children, or demeaning smart children for having the audacity to be bored when they can read chapter books and everyone else is still learning their ABCs.

Some public schools, like candles in the darkness, are still good. If you happen to live near one, by all means make use of it. But do it because it's a good education for your kid, not because it's a public school. If it's *not* a good education for your kid, you owe it to your children to move heaven and earth to see to their education *yourself.* Not the government on your behalf.

rick, you're having a rough time grasping this whole pure voucher thing.

There will be no schools. No teacher's union. No school districts. Nothing.

Just a parent with a check.

    That's it.

The state would have an agency that either conducts tests or outsources the testing.

The test would be a compromise between easy and hard. People will argue about it, but there is no way around that. It will end up as what is generally expect a kid of a certain age to know at that time.

Picture a test that most suburban white kids with parents who care would breeze through and that some inner city kid would fail.

You're right, it is not profound science. But at that level, there is something to be said for having science demonstrations (not really an experiment) that get kids thinking and engaged in science. If it is done well, you can talk about the different chemical changes that take place, why the potato starts firm but then gets all mushy as you bake it, what a potato is composed of and how does that respond to heat, why you often wrap potatoes in foil in order to cook them. Plus it helps if the kids can do that "science experiment" at home if they want and so the learning carries over into the home after school. That's not necessarily a bad thing waht they did.

You do know that tens of thousands of parents educate their own children all the way up through high school without having any "credentials" or meeting any requirements, yes?

If I run a private school and I'm hiring teachers, they're going to have a resume. I'm going to have an interview process which will almost certainly include having them guest-teach a class, so that I can verify they actually know what they're doing. Having once hired them, if they fail to perform, I'm going to fire them.

Then, when they go somewhere else, they'll have to explain why they were fired. Sure, they can lie about it - they might even get away with lying about it - but if they fail to perform there, they'll get fired again. And it won't take very long before other potential employers see a resume with a long stretch of one-school-year (or less, perhaps) jobs and they'll be less likely to hire you.

That's how it works in just about every other industry with absolutely no problems. I work in IT where average tenure at position can be as little as 9 months and I still get crooked looks from people for "job hopping" because I haven't stayed with any one company for much more than 2 years at a time. In teaching, average tenure in job is something like 10+ years. If you find a teacher who is moving jobs every year, that's a great big huge red flag.

320 Something about the locker room showers ya'll may not know.
My daughter graduates in a week from HS, my son was last year. they both were in the new Middle school for it's opening year. New school meant new locker room and new showers. HS is somewhat older, 20-25 years, but pretty up to date still.
Way back when I was in HS gym class, even last period gym, meant you stayed in the shower at least until your hair was wet, no exceptions. No way to dry it meant walking home your hair would freeze, but that was the rule. We survived somehow.

Could not find much reaction to the Wendy's announcement on the left, but there was this comment at Slashdot.

America is shedding jobs at an epic rate so that the rich can get slightly richer. The only reason these corps "can't afford" a higher minimum wage is because they need to protect their obscene profits. We're all in this together and we're all headed to the same grave. Let's try helping each other out instead of seeing who can amass the biggest pile of cash at the expense of other people. A revolution is brewing.

331 But we're blessed we can do it. Many there are who cannot, and who cannot move to a better school system, either.

I know. My wife and I sacrifice, too. At that, we're lucky that we've found a relatively cheap option (that is also very good), and we may have to go to an online option once my son hits 7th grade (their current school only goes through 6th).

Which brings us back to vouchers.

I'm not quite completely on the jwest train of no public school at all, but I don't think we're that far apart either.

My main purpose in keeping public schools is so that private schools can remain really private. That is, they can accept or reject students on their own terms (so long as those terms are available to parents so they can be known, obviously). If we completely got rid of public schools, then it would take about 15 seconds for someone to sue to get their kid into a school that didn't want them (because they were disruptive or whatever) and win because "we don't have other options." If there public schools, the answer to that is: "sure you do, and the other option is free to boot."

If I run a private school and I'm hiring teachers, they're going to have a resume. I'm going to have an interview process which will almost certainly include having them guest-teach a class, so that I can verify they actually know what they're doing. Having once hired them, if they fail to perform, I'm going to fire them.

346 "You do know that tens of thousands of parents educate their own children all the way up through high school without having any "credentials" or meeting any requirements, yes? "

I've been in heavily technical/engineering based businesses my whole life. I've written peer reviewed papers that have been published on complex gear geometry. I can even do high school math.

Which is why it amazed me that when my daughter was learning fractions in grade school I failed miserably in trying to teach her. With all I knew about math, far more than I would need to be credentialed in any school, I could not get the ideas across to my own daughter.

    I sucked as a teacher.

All I got was blank stares, tears and frustration from her.

My wife, on the other hand, explained the shit in five minutes in a way my daughter instantly understood. She was able to pick up on the clues about what was being grasped and what was not, thereby adjusting and getting through before frustration set in.

My wife doesn't have teaching credentials and sucks at math.

    But she can teach.

There are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of highly credentialed teachers who are just like me - they can't teach.

it always works out well. Very peacefully and very well.

378 ... I told my wife when Caitlyn was 'invented' that
this was Bruce Jenner's contribution to the Kardasian-nation PR machine.
The entire family is in the business of generating PR in exchange for
promotional consideration. Bruce just was generating enough .. hence
    Caitlyn Jenner.

I fully expected Caitlyn to revert at some point when the media glare and the novelty had worn off.

Heard an analysis from a local (I think) talk show yesterday. Suggestion was that after Jenner committed what probably was vehicular manslaughter, his attorneys and his PR people cornered him and suggested that the only way to stay out of jail was to go on with the whole sex-change thing. Any judge that tried to put him in prison or treat him too badly would be savaged in the press and have to defend his decision as to whether to imprison in a male of female prison which would be instantly be appealed forever, and "caitlyn" could continue to breathe the air as a free Xit.

Suggestion was that "caitlyn" would quietly stop when all chances of going to prison was over and done with.

Sounds like a hollywood idea for a script.

Jenner's mother has said he exhibited confusion and problems when he was a child. He's had mental problems since a youngster.

Considering California likes to release convicted hard core criminals, loves illegals and sanctuaries them, etc. Jenner not being charged with vehicular manslaughter doesn't surprise me in the least.

Thinking of Linday Lohan and how many times she went to jail for 15 minutes for violating her probation, etc.

I get frustrated by the idiotic comments regarding Trayvon that you still see:

    He was a child!!1!!
He was minding his own business in his own neighborhood!!111

Seriously, his parents never gave a crap about him. When his father returned to his girlfriends townhouse and saw that his son was missing, he turned off his phone and went to bed.

387 America is shedding jobs at an epic rate so that the rich can get slightly richer.

The first 'rich' person hit by a minimum wage increase will be the franchisee, who I guarantee you is nowhere near the 1%. Take away his profit margin and he's living hand-to-mouth (if he isn't already) and won't bother staying open for subsistence wages.

Heard on Fox yesterday that the average White Castle owner has a profit margin of 1% after all expenses.

If you look at the pictures from the incident, it's plain that Jenner was already in the process of altering his appearance. Supposedly he's toyed with doing this since the 80s, when he took hormones for a while. Somebody on the ONT recently linked a 1998 broadcast of 'Loveline' in which Adam corolla noted that that Jenner appear to be transitioning then but withdrew again.

It is reportedly listed with UnitedGun. They said at first they didn't want it, then supposedly said it is listed.

Let's put it this way. It's legally owned. Zimmerman has a right to sell it. I can sympathize with the auction sites in that Zimmerman is trying to get as much money as he can by hyping the notoriety of the gun, and that can seem a bit unseemly. At the same time, why shut down a legitimate auction simply because some internet idiots are trying to interfere to bolster their cause, of putting the gun auction sites out of business.

He said even at 8 y/o he would put on woman's underwear and sneak out at night and run around the neighborhood.

Yes, he was doing the hormone crap after wife #2, met Kris Jenner and stopped so he could marry her.

It really does bother me that with all this being in the news that they are not honest about it, i.e., high suicide rate, that most doent have their wants cut off, most regret their decision to have it cut off, that many are hetereo and it is just a fetish, etc.

And what's with sports guys? Jenner, some sports reporter in LA who ended up killing himself, some guy back east who transitioned and then changed his mind...
