Those places are no longer on the map, so to speak. The gathering storm is there, I'm sure, but nobody is really talking about it. There and Iran, of course. That clown show in Syria is probably more of a distraction, but heck, even there, who really knows what's going on? I had a similar experience when I went to Romania a few years ago. Bucharest seemed to be coming around nicely with a lot of activity and some signs or entrepreneurship, particularly amongst the younger set.
But we drove a couple hours south to where my customer had their headquarters and it was a completely different story. Miles and miles of farmland sitting unworked because most of the people had no idea what to do unless they were given orders.
We did see a few pockets of activity where it appeared whole families were out working the field, mostly with horse powered plows, wagons, etc. but that was about it.
I think it's pretty standard in areas where communist rule falls. The older, more rural generation has no clue how to adapt and the younger generation often leaves for the brighter lights of the west. See East Germany.

Had a fascinating conversation with my State Senator's representative on the phone today. They are trying to force the state AG to define the baseline rules and definitions for transgender and, of course since he's a Democrat, he's trying his damnedest to evade and obscure the issue because he's beginning to see the legal pitfalls therein.
Neat part is that they are threatening legal action requiring the AG to clarify how one's "identity" is defined. The clever reverse Cloward & Piven point is that there seems to be a potential argument that since the sex on one's birth certificate apparently is not really definitive, then why can't I identify as a female (or Pacific Islander, etc., Rachael Dolezal call your office) and be eligible to enter my company for those sweet discriminatory government minority set-aside contracts? Why, since the sex listed on the birth certificate is redefinable by the way I feel today, can't I similarly decide that I feel like I'm sixty five and want to enroll in Medicare and start withdrawing funds from my IRA without penalty? At the other end of the age spectrum, why can't a sixteen year old say "Bartender, I know I look like I'm sixteen and that's what it says on my driver's license, but I identify as twenty-one so serve me a beer! "

I boycott Hannity now, but yesterday was too tired to change the station when I got in the car. He was saying that when he was in high school he refused to shower with 30 other guys in a group shower even though it was required. he was a good athlete, so the coaches wouldn't kick him off the team even though he refused to shower.
At my all-girls school we had shower stalls with curtains in our locker room, but most kids still didn't use them--we just showered at home later. Sometimes visiting teams would use them because they didn't want to go back to Houston or wherever all stinky on the bus.

The Peruvian Consul-General in La Plata, Buenos Aires province, called for a local judge to overturn a ruling which handed down a sentence for drug-trafficking to a Peruvian transvestite. 3. Most airline crashes (rare though they be) do not involve a terminal dive into the bosom of the earth. If you're not interested in taking measures that will help you survive a survivable crash, fine. Fewer people between me and the exit.
