Kepler Telescope Team Reveals Over Twelve Hundred New Planets -- And Maybe Another Twelve Hundred Suspected Ones

This is a big bunch.

NASA's Kepler mission has verified 1,284 new planets – the single largest finding of planets to date.

"This announcement more than doubles the number of confirmed planets from Kepler," said Ellen Stofan, chief scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "This gives us hope that somewhere out there, around a star much like ours, we can eventually discover another Earth."

Analysis was performed on the Kepler space telescope’s July 2015 planet candidate catalog, which identified 4,302 potential planets. For 1,284 of the candidates, the probability of being a planet is greater than 99 percent – the minimum required to earn the status of "planet." An additional 1,327 candidates are more likely than not to be actual planets, but they do not meet the 99 percent threshold and will require additional study. The remaining 707 are more likely to be some other astrophysical phenomena. This analysis also validated 984 candidates previously verified by other techniques.

"Before the Kepler space telescope launched, we did not know whether exoplanets were rare or common in the galaxy. Thanks to Kepler and the research community, we now know there could be more planets than stars," said Paul Hertz, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters...

In the newly-validated batch of planets, nearly 550 could be rocky planets like Earth, based on their size. Nine of these orbit in their sun's habitable zone, which is the distance from a star where orbiting planets can have surface temperatures that allow liquid water to pool. With the addition of these nine, 21 exoplanets now are known to be members of this exclusive group.

I think Obama and everyone who voted for him should be rewarded for their forward-thinkingness with a berth on the Golgifrinchan Space Ark B.

37 IIRC, Kepler was only looking at a very small slice of the galaxy. Something like one tenth of one percent of known stars. Billions of stars in our own galaxy could mean trillions of planets. The odds of very large numbers could mean a habitable planet, and one that is already inhabited by intelligent life.

49 Ok, all of this tyalk about planets and all irritates me more than a little. We really don't know what causes the dip in brightness of the stars. We assume planets, but in reality it could be something we know nothing about or planets. The jump to declaring planets seems premature to me.

Can they tell the size of an object by the dip and expected orbit?

Kepler detects planets by looking for periodic dips in the brightness of stars. Some planets pass in front of their stars as seen from our point of view on Earth; when they do, they cause their stars to dim slightly, an event Kepler can see.

There is a conspiracy theory that says Hubble was a civilian version of a state-of-the-art spy satellite, and that the mirror was deliberately ground wrong to conceal the spy satellite's true capabilities, while knowing that it could be repaired in orbit.

The same company, Perkin-Elmer, made the mirrors for both versions and has extensive experience in building mirrors for use in spacecraft.

233 Kepler is a dedicated planet-hunter. It doesn't study galaxies, it looks at one patch of sky over the long term and measures tiny variations in the light from those stars. When a star demonstrates a regular, periodic variation, that's a sign of a planet.

This is one reason they've been finding all those freaky "hot Jupiters" with huge masses orbiting really close to the parent stars: those show up after only a brief period of observation. Planets like Earth take longer to detect.

I have a vague memory of Ellison saying that one of the producers was demanding that they arbitrarily incorporate Aztec/Mayan themes throughout the show. That stuff having being big among SoCal New Age cosmic muffin types back in the Seventies when the series was pitched and produced. This did NOT sit well with Harlan, as you may imagine.

291 Speaking for absolutely nobody but myself, I'm
having a bit of an episode of sussing out exactly what my principles
actually are. For one thing I'm done with throwing pearls before swine,
as it were; "conservative principles" are fine for those solidly within
Western culture and tradition, who have the grounding to make it work,
but for those outside--including the many of our countrymen-by-courtesy
here in the US--I'm not quite so willing to extend the same courtesies.
It's why I call myself a "Westernist" instead now.

Posted by: Brother Cavil at May 10, 2016 09:07 PM (D0J8L)

Fair enough, I suppose. I agree to the extent that not everyone on the planet has yet adopted a mindset compatible with conservatism, but I disagree that timeless principles of conservatism, such as smaller government over bigger government, wouldn't be applicable to everyone.

296 (AP) His White House dreams fading, Bernie Sanders aimed to add another state to his tally over Hillary Clinton with a win in West Virginia on Tuesday night.

Sanders held a slight edge in early returns and should he hold on to win, such a result would underscore the awkward position of Clinton and the Democratic Party establishment, as they attempt to turn their focus to the general election.

Awkward position? All she does is lose but will still get the nomination.

307 I've been saying for a while that the word "conservative" has lost all meaning, and has basically become a shorthand buzzword for a variety of concepts.

What is meant by that word exactly? Do you believe in limited government? The rule of law? Free-market capitalism? Traditional marriage? Pro-Life? Then talk about those things specifically.

Simply saying, 'I am a conservative" is taking the lazy route. People who share your beliefs might understand what you mean, but don't assume that others will.

I think it's also become a dirty word to many people, who think that a "conservative" is just a prude who wants to outlaw fun. I've met people like that, and it's not just young people. Sure, they've been misinformed by the MSM, but just repeating the word "conservative" over and over is not going to educate or sway them.

Lots of planets in the universe means there's lots of places where intelligent life could evolve, but we don't see any sign of other civilizations anywhere.

Maybe it's harder than we think for life to develop, or harder for intelligence to arise than we realize.

But if lots of planets have beings who get as smart as we are . . . and then vanish . . .

. . . we have a big problem.

It would be amusing to have film of that "gauntlet" of interviews juxtaposed with the interviews which Hyman Rickover personally conducted with all of the prospects for the naval nuclear power program which he oversaw.

The "Kindly Old Gentleman" also was interested in knowing who would and who would not lose their cool.

Sadly, I don't think any audiovisual records of the brutal Rickover ordeal existed, or have survived to this day. All we have to go on are first-person accounts by those who endured them.

I wouldn't even call it the "business community". It's very advanced speculation and trading community.

In the days of the old Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser, they were called the Lead Bulls of Wall Street.

I remember one particular episode of WSW about 1990 where one of Louis' bestest pals was commenting on ATT taking over NCR (of which I knew a lot about) and why was the manangement of NCR fighting this? ATT was going to do great things.
Well, ATT did buy out NCR in a hostile takeover, and screwed up the company, screwed up a lot of people's lives that I knew, and then "Oops!" spun it back off again. It was never the same. Ruined a very good and well run medium size corporation.

Wall Street. Genius!

Wow. I thought the airlines were desperate for pilots?

Since you've flown 757s, I have a question. About a year ago, there was one of those blue boxes with 'interesting factoids' at the bottom of the screen of a CNN show wherein they were discussing something civilian aviation-related.

The text in the box said: "Boeing 757s have difficulty maintaining altitude after they run out of fuel."

So, is there a design flaw in the 757, since by inference other types don't have this issue? Asking for a friend.

IMO, to many people, the complaint that "the GOP sucks therefore I'm
gonna stop calling myself a conservative", is really just a
rationalization for rejecting the conservative principles, like limited
government, that they never really liked in the first place, with or
without the GOP, and with or without Donald Trump

Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 10, 2016 08:59 PM (v6tlA)

You're missing the point. What does most of America think of when you say the word Conservative? They think of Donald Trump, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and all of the other globalist scumbags who have been selling us out for decades.

The label is claimed by too many disparate groups, many of whom are antithetical to the typical Horde definition of Conservative. So the real issue is this. We can either fight an uphill PR battle to both reclaim and redefine a damaged brand, or we can put a new unsullied name on it.

The Democrats haven't stopped being any less Communist every time they switch between Socialist, Progressive, and Liberal depending on which is the most discredited title at the moment. Branding matters, and trying to cure the negative public perception of conservatism - that people who claim the title like Boehner have so richly earned - is a fool's errand.

We came within a nano second of that happening to us on a flight to Vegas for a conference several years ago. Turbulence drove the plane downward into the trees as we approached our Charlotte connection. The pilot never said a word during the 30+ minutes we circled the airport after he shot the nose of the plane skyward and saved us from the treeline.

I grew up with an AF pilot dad, loved flying in anything, and now I hate it.

On our flight to Africa, husband took an Ambien, and he and everyone were asleep halfway over the Atlantic, when we ran into major turbulence. I thought I would have a heart attack. Ugh.

Anarchism is a ridiculous extreme. To be against authoritarianism is not. A government with distributed powers, properly checked and balanced isn't authoritarian and there isn't anything to oppose in it.

When we went to Africa, we used Amex points saved up. Flew Delta Bidness Elite (they don't have first class on the long haul flight to Jo-burg). You have these sleeping pods which seem really cool. Until you try to sleep in them. The seat belts have these bulky things that we were told were "air bags" because none of the seats face the front of the plane, they're at an angle. Anyhow, it was way more comfortable than sitting up for 15+ hours. So I'm grateful we were able to do that.

Well, taken literally, "anti-authoritarianism" is exactly anarchism, since all government force represents a degree of authoritarian power.
But what you seem to be describing is minarchism, or minimal government, which is basically libertarianism or Objectivism

474 Anti-Authoritarian. Why make it complicated? You're either on the side of liberty or you're with the Cult of the Almighty State.

Um, no. It isn't just a matter of freedom vs. restriction, but what form that restriction comes in. Government is just one possible source.

Traditionally, I think that conservatism is fairly restrictive, but wants the restrictions to come from culture, religion, and personal morality rather than the state.

No kidding, I know just enough that I don't want to know anymore. Resonance is bad in electronic circuits if not a design goal; I would certainly expect that to be the case with aircraft.

Some kind of tree-top turbulence misadventure, would be a supreme buzz kill as well. Meds would be necessary to climb aboard.

When I hear "popular sovereignty" I think Tyranny of the Majority. I would rather have stick with with James Madison, Edmund Burke, and F. A. Hayek.

My problem with the GOPe was that they broke campaign promises, failed to govern as conservatives, and didn't resist the leftist agenda, all in the name of crony capitalism and electability. I can't get behind any movement that simply doesn't care about the first two items on that list.

484 No offense and I support research but frankly, WHO CARES?

The number could be millions but they report it as if it's meaningful news. We've speculated that logically there must be other planets that could support life similar to ours.

And now we have supposed proof but so what?

Let's spend that money on getting back into space.

We don't even have a space presence of any depth and we're spending money and time looking for places we'll probably never reach.

Let's seek out more information about how to get there and spend more money on putting a human presence into space.

Which really is the only known sure way to avoid any cataclysmic events on this planet.

I am so disappointed in this country. We went to the moon and then didn't do anything with it.

And the space industry will be harder to restart than it was to build on what we had at the time.

It's been such a waste of opportunity.
