Overnight Open Thread (7 May 2016)

I hope y'all are ready for Mother's Day tomorrow.

Top 10 Mothers ranked.

War Poems

I might have to get this. Powerful true-war stories told in 6-word poems.

"What's the forecast today? Steel Rain."

Too Many Generals

And I thought we were top heavy in the ranks. Venezuela has more than 4,000 generals.

PC vs Safety

The safety of your fellow citizens is secondary to the mere chance of offending someone. Oakland PD cancels Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoints to avoid offending anyone. Why not on St. Patrick's Day too? Surely there are some Irish in Oakland that could be offended by a DUI checkpoint.

Dead Pool

DeadPool Gag Reel by Magnificent17

Mission Creep

Pentagon reveals US forces back in Yemen.

Strange Subcultures & Stuff

What it's like to have sex as a 'furry'. I'm sure they'll be demanding bathrooms of their choice too.

In other strange news, China bans 'erotic' banana-eating live streams.

Anyone game for KFC flavored edible nail polish?

Survival Tips

Pipeline

You know, I think I can sell this as a way to reduce DUIs. Brewery builds a pipeline, sending beer lovers into a froth. I wonder what the over/under for an unauthorized tap is?

West Point Controversy

Black female West Point cadets investigated for 'Black Lives Matter'-like raised fist salute. I suspect nothing will come of this. It is too easy to explain away the raised fist and unless there is something else besides the photo, perhaps Yik-Yak conversations, then that's that.

Kitteh Comet

Why astronomers named this comet after a cat.

At last, a third faucet on the kitchen sink. The "inexhaustible beer tap" faucet. 200 years from now, people will be amazed that it took this long for us to figure this out.

16 I have a quick moral lesson.
This week wanted to buy something on ebay I wanted a long time. Hadn't done it for years so got a ebay gift card to pay for it. Figured out how to get the card into it but seller wanted paypal and there it kept getting snagged. On a balance due of $0.00 paypal kept circling me it needed all my bank account numbers. ( not on the coldest day in hell) redoubled paypal account, waited overnight, got emails everything is good tried again same circle. On a whim though forget the gift card, blew right through didn't have a chance to stop it.
So the moral is don't use a ebay gift card on ebay if you have to go through PayPal.

33 There will be furry rights at some point. Not allowing people to wear their fursuits in to the office will be a federal crime. I suspect however that polyamory will be the next big frontier in the push for new rights. There also seems to be a bit of a push towards legalized incest among "consenting adults" but I'm yet sure if that will come before or after "trans-species" rights are recognized.

35 That Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoint story is just the tip of the iceberg. In parts of NoCal, any DUI checkpoint is soon accompanied by two guys, about 1/4 mile down the road each way from the checkpoint, each holding a sign in Spanish. Don't know what it says, but I think I can guess.

Try that with a sign in English, and see how long they let you stand there.

The very pillars of society are being rent asunder, and the mores, customs, and folkways that evolved over countless centuries to provide that ever-so rare balance of virtue and liberty being discarded willy-nilly, by Progressives, who in their mad pride of pseudo-intellectuality, believe that they can create utopia ex nihilo and in vacuo of reality, with themselves as the (un)intellegent designers.

49 As far as I can tell, polyamory is pretty much a done deal. The Left isn't pushing it because nobody's pushing back. Doesn't have that "transgressive" thrill they crave.

No, the next big thing is kiddy-fiddling. That's the pure stuff, uncut. That's what all the liberals are going to discover they totally supported all along and anyone who doesn't is a horrible bigot.

I'm going to put down a marker and say that some time in the next three years a "controversial" feature film (or Netflix/Amazon original TV show) will have a positive portrayal of a sexual relationship between an adult and an underage kid. Not too far underage, maybe 15 or so. Probably it'll be about a lesbian woman and a girl, or an adult woman and a teen boy. Their pure love will be shattered by the disapproval of bigoted white Christians.

The real determining moment will be when Disney does or doesn't jump on the bandwagon. If they do, it'll be war to the knife because their corporate survival will depend on winning. If they don't, the push will run out of steam early.

107 Yeah, I went to see Deadpool at the cinema and wasn't disappointed. It's not Citizen Kane or anything, but, it was very enjoyable. What makes the flick for me, is that it pretty much sticks to the spirit and execution of the original 90's comics. There was some stuff that didn't need to be there and some stuff that could have been included, but, overall it's a hit. The nuffies that butcher the X-Men films should take heed of how Deadpool was done.

108 @Trimegistus: Yeah, I forgot to add that part about the movie/cable TV/Netfilx series. That's a major sign that some "issue" is being pushed into the mainstream.

I agree that legal kiddie diddling is in the future somewhere but it's one of those things that still makes even the more ardent leftards squirm a bit. They will make excuses that the danger of sexual predators in opposite sex restrooms is vanishingly small. However, that 30-something adult neighbor grooming their teenage kid starts to feel personal. It's also a major issue for feminists, for whom sexual trauma is practically a twisted rite of passage. They WILL push the issue at some point but how they sell it to the perpetually angry triggered and traumatized queer feminist cadre is something I can't figure out.

Yup. Flowers a-ready. Supper plans made (dining in, not going out with the masses).

Glad to still have my mom around at 95 (her, that is, not me), still on her (sometimes wobbly) pins, and clear-headed. Gets a little tired after her workout at the gym sometimes...! (Pulls up abacus... calculates...) She's been a mom since 1943!

Going down to visit here with Milady, mother of our three. A wonderful and devoted (if *ahem!* not always sufficiently respected) mom since 1981.

Special mention for my daughter, whose baby, years ago, only made it a few months in the womb, but we consider her qualified as a Mom, too. In the hardest way.

Earlier today we took flowers to our neighbor, a wonderful woman who earlier this year lost the eldest of her three offspring.

Happies and hugs to all moms. They do all the work.

You know, I'm OK with that. It's up to the woman to decide how much alcohol is "safe" to drink when pregnant. Telling bartenders they can or must refuse service to pregnant women is just making bartenders into proxy agents of the nanny state.

And once a pregnant woman has had a couple of drinks, the bartender, if concerned about the fetus, can cut her off for "being drunk". They have a lot of leeway on that determination.

Nope. It's the woman's responsibility to govern her alcohol intake to a level that is safe for her unborn child. Bartenders are simply not competent to know for certain is a woman is pregnant, or if so, how far along she is.

Trigglypuff walks into a bar: "Gimme a bourbon, a scotch, and a beer!"

Bartender: "I can't, you're pregnant." "Fuck you! I'm not pregnant, just adiposally gifted." "You're knocked up." "No, I'm not. Do you think any man would do me?" (breaks down into tears.)

144 Yeah, sorry Bertram, polyamory is the current term to describe allegedly "serious, committed" multi-partner relationships. What makes it different from cheating, swinging or old wretched polygamy is that it's supposedly an "orientation". Because you "come out" as poly and it's all honest and out in the open, your partner(s)/spouse(s) should be totes understanding and compassionate. Even better, they should embrace it and happily join in (although it's an orientation, not a lifestyle choice). While this sounds every teen boy's fantasy, a good number of people who push it are women. I knew at least one woman who was in a poly marriage and she was the most horribly miserable person I knew at the time. Apparently, she was the legal wife of the husband and the biological mother of the kids but she constantly bitched about how poorly she was treated by her husband and "other wife". Well , DUH! None of the situations I've personally witnessed have worked out and usually left one partner as a third wheel. So now, the push is to legalize poly marriages. Unlike polygamy, the partners would all be legally married to each other. Imagine what divorce, child custody and estate succession would be like when say, four, six or more people are all married to each other!

What are the legal implications if a woman buys alcoholic beverages and consumes them, then has a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome? Can she sue the bartender who sold her the drinks? If you can sue a homeowner for breaking into his property and getting injured there, what's to stop lawsuits of this nature?

This seems really shortsighted, for the bartenders.

It will be improvement on society when people realize that whether or not you're genetically predisposed to act a certain way is, by itself, no guide to how you should actually act. I'm not sure why it's taken so long for many people to make that argument.

Like I said, let her have one or two drinks, Probably won't hurt the kid. Then cut her her off for "being intoxicated". Bartenders don't have to serve intoxicated persons. Accomplishes mostly the same result, and relieves the bartender of having determine if his customer is pregnant. You will agree it's hard to tell, if she's only a few weeks along.

And the really dedicated alkys will be drinking at home from a bottle, anyway.

If all the members of a polyamorous relationship are willingly engaging in the relationship, how can it be prevented considering we have now redefined marriage to include two people of the same gender? Why does the relationship have to be between only two people? Supporters of gay marriage never have a good response to that question. That's one of many reasons why you don't legalize gay marriage. Two people of the same gender want to be together, fine, but don't expect our government or society to celebrate it or place it legally (or morally) on the same level as heterosexual marriage.

213 Regarding the sidebar item regarding creditors taking a haircut on the National Debt....remember that sovereign debt is a solemn promise to tax the ever-loving crap out of someone in the future to make a bond payment.

This is all nice and easy when you're thinking it's going to be in the far future, and the victims will be generations yet unborn. But with the aging of the Baby Boomers and the fantastic increase in the debt, we're not going to make it into that happy future. Some sucker is going to be on the hook to face massive taxation in about ten years.

Will it be "The Rich", as Comrade Sanders proposes? I doubt it -- they can slide off to Belize or Geneva. Will it be "Corporations", as Nazi Pelosi proclaims? Well, corporate tax inversions are popular as a means for companies to slide off to Ireland -- and there's a datum or two about companies like Apple with huge cash balances outside the US -- but there's also the fact that taxing corporations makes them less competitive in a global world.

In a perfect world, this tax would fall upon the very cronies that are responsible for the National Debt -- Academia, the MSM, the foreigners who've had our taxpayer-funded military on speed-dial, the parasites at the UN, public-sector unions, bureaucrats, and the like.....but in the world we live in, The Ruling Class wouldn't think of taxing any of them. Instead, they think they're going to sock it to the middle class, good and hard. Which will work....until it doesn't.

Swell. It's just sad to see the changes in aged loved ones when you can't visit in person often. They moved to AZ 19 yrs ago and used to be able to visit us in IL and we'd come here. As Blanco observed, they are no longer capable of that so we are down to once a yr get togethers.

It's reassuring they had the good sense to go into asst living w/ their health conditions. We've realized on this visit they are good for about 3 hours at a time, so we visit around lunchtime, give them a break in the afternoon and then do 3 hrs in the evening.

Today we went to lunch and then to the Western Museum in Wickenburg. That was 5 hrs and they were beat. Back for dinner and trashing the politicians, LOL.

They love seeing their dau, and I guess me. LOL We will indulge in the Mother's Day buffet at their place tomorrow. Sounds good, but they always obsess about any bad meal they've ever had there. LOL

It's good to see them and know they are doing as well as they are and are safe.

A number of Conservatives also noted that the push for national gay marriage became a push for "marriage equality" in the two or three years prior to Obergfell. And there's the "all love is equal" slogan. Why should this only apply to hetero and gay couples while otherwise maintaining other legal strictures on marriage such as age, number of spouses or even relationships of spouses? Really, if all love is equal, how can any love be unequal?

You will be forced to support it. Then, it won't be long (e.g., decade or two) before many citizens will be mocked and attacked for NOT engaging in a gay or polyamorous relationships themselves. It may seem far-fetched but look how far we've come in just a few years with Obama as President.

Many on the left saw that as a feature, not a bug. There were plenty of articles with the same general message, "Gays aren't monogamous, so gay marriages won't be either, and thus heterosexuals have to get over their expectations of monogamy as well."

Wait until we see all these kids who are the children of gay couples but weren't adopted (i.e., gay couple had child using a donor(s) and modern medicine). Obviously, only one of the two "parents" are biologically their parent -- and in some cases, neither are -- so how messed up is that kid going to be? Adopted children face enough difficulties but we're now creating another group of children in which there will be a high percentage of individuals with mental and emotional problems due to their family situations. As if our society didn't have enough problems.

235 I didn't (and don't) give a shit if two men want to get married. Same applies to 2 men and a woman, or 3 women or whatever. Won't affect me in the least.

My concerns are:

1. Rich guys will hoard all the hot/smart/funny chicks (Yeah, I know, that sounds petty. Still, that's a recipe for social unrest.)

2. I can't think of any polygamous societies that I'd like to copy. Can I say it's because of polygamy? Nope, at least not entirely. But then there's the "Chesterton's fence" thing. You don't know where the thread you're pulling leads to and you should be damn sure before you pull it. We're being pretty cavalier about that lately.

256 Same applies to 2 men and a woman, or 3 women or whatever. Won't affect me in the least.

Polygamy is destabilizing on society, and that does affect you.

Women are viewed as a commodity to be collected. Older men, who have the wealth or power to take more than one wife, marry again and again, thus denying younger men access to the marriage market. There's pressure for women and girls at increasingly younger ages to be married off in order to meet the demands of the market, often pushing girls as young as 13 or 14 into relationships with older men. These young women are also at the mercy of older wives who have greater influence, and may not be happy about the competition for resources/affection. For older women, the ability of a husband to take younger wives without divorcing his first wife reduces her power in the relationship, since he can push her aside much more easily. And an older woman has fewer options than an older man.

As for a situation where a woman takes multiple husbands, those will be a lot rarer since a) most men aren't going to be willing to share, and b) it creates instability that most women don't want. So you'll have an imbalance in the availability of women for marriage versus men. And where it does happen, it's going to horrible for young children. The strange men in mom's bed are unlikely to care about any children that they have no biological connection to, or even worse may actively abuse those children, both physically and sexually.

You want to see what non-monogamous societies look like? Fundamentalist Mormon compounds, and the ghetto.

A pre-teen girl who is pregnant is considered by the law to be fully competent to make "reproductive choices".

Yet they are not considered competent to get pregnant in the first place.

With that contradiction, which position will be the first to fall when the Left is in charge.

The Left won't go full pedo at first, but establish ephebophilia and hebephilia as "sexual orientations" akin to homosexuality.

Many forget that the pedophiles and homosexuals were allies in the '70's and '80's, especially in places like Germany.

Once Gays found an avenue to acceptance, they droped the pedophiles and tried to scrub history like one of Stalin's air-bruth artists.

I don't believe that you are that naive.
'Family' and 'marriage' are about much more than a signed piece of paper. It has to do with blood kin/relationships, children. Redefining 'marriage' to a piece of paper relationship between two men is to deny the fact that marriage and all that it entails has evolved as a family relationship. It is a lie.

To airily adopt the attitude that "It doesn't affect me" is to deny an obligation to normalcy and more importantly, to stable, civil society.

Considering that 25 year olds are still "children" under Obamacare (and many act like children well thereafter), this isn't surprising.

The age of consent is higher around most of the world than it has ever been in the past.

In Mexico, many states have lower limits of 14 or "puberty".

But even if you are an anti-woman bigot who thinks it's a kid, how is it being harmed? By a glass of wine? A beer? One drink? Hardly.

Now personally speaking, I'd like to cut a pregnant woman off after two drinks, nanny that I am. I'd like that freedom.
But how do I know she's pregnant?
Most women aren't obviously so until at least four months along and alcohol is MUCH more dangerous in early pregnancy than late.
If I really, really want to be sure kids aren't harmed, I shouldn't serve any woman of child-bearing age more than one drink. Period.

It's hard being a nanny --- which is why I think the law should butt out of it. Let the mothers and the bar-tenders use their own discretion.

I went to help a friend help an old friend she calls "Grandma" do yardwork today, but we couldn't find the parts we needed and the store has to order them.

Grandma has mentioned that she told her kids and grand-kids to stop sending Starbucks cards and MacDonalds cards because she feels bad giving them away, and to not bother sending flowers, just send money, because the flowers die.

Today she went through the mail while we were sitting with her on her back porch, and the cards from her grand-kids all had a dollar bill in them

Well, at the heart of your defense is that gay marriage doesn't affect you so why should you care who other people marry. Isn't that correct?

A lot of things happen to other people that don't directly impact me (e.g., crimes on the other side of the country), but I care enough to worry about their impact on society. That's all many of us are saying. Significant cultural changes are very difficult to reverse, which is why many of us are now speaking openly and forcefully against some of the destructive changes that have happened and may happen in the future. Others did it before us to ensure that our society would thrive. That's all many of us want to happen in the future. Simply throwing your hands up in the air and saying "live and let live" is a certain path to destruction, whether on marriage issues or some other cultural issue that hasn't come up yet but will in the future.

Here's another perspective. On the heels of gay marriage being legalized, we're now seeing parents (most liberals, I would imagine) supporting their young children (e.g., under 10 years old) transitioning to the other gender, including having the necessary surgery. How messed up do you think many of those kids are going to be when they get older, especially when they see that their gender confusion was simply a childhood phase?

We're also now being made to feel like we're bigots if we don't want men who simply say that they're identifying as females today (wow, talk about a commitment) to use the ladies room. I don't want my wife or female relatives being put in that situation, especially if the guy's a predator looking to sexual assault a woman. Even if he isn't a predator, why should they be forced into a situation like that?

Many, like yourself, argue against a slippery slope, but we're living it right now.

Great points. That's another major problem with what's been happening, from ObamaCare, to same-sex marriage, to letting people choose their gender and being called a bigot for not agreeing, etc.: the majority of the public has simply been run over. If we had voted on these issues, I may not have agreed with the majority's decision but I would have at least had a say.

Instead, douchebag Obama and the rest of the fascist leaders from his political party have simply used every trick to get what they wanted, including using the courts to their advantage. This includes the immigration issue, too. It's frustrating for those of us who are getting steamrolled by -- all BS aside -- many people who don't even carry their own weight in our society but have so much influence over its future direction. I'm also worried about what happens in regards to the stability of our society if this tactic of simply steamrolling the opposition (i.e., conservatives) continues. I don't know about you but I don't want a return to the 1860s. It wasn't a particularly good time in our country's history.

Same thing, though. They've normalized one perversity, and they're starting on the next. Why? Because maximum perversity is the goal. They want to push as much decadence as they can so our civilization collapses and they can sweep in and rebuild society in their image.

There have been a couple of incidents recently in the news, including one in which a man went into the ladies room and was taking photos with a camera. But that's besides the point anyway, as I can't stand the frequency argument. Incidents will never happen enough to convince people who supported or didn't care about the gender-neutral bathrooms to ever admit they were wrong. If there are five reported rapes in a month across the country, they will simply say that there were only five reported rapes (though that is five women who will be irreparably harmed, all of whom are loved by and special to someone). A stupid decision is a stupid decision. We're actually arguing about whether men and women should be using public restrooms together. I don't know about you, but I don't even use my home bathroom at the same time as my wife. Why would I want a strange man doing so?

They also do things to simply piss people off whom they don't like. Too many adult liberals have the maturity of a child or a young teenager and thus like to do things to aggravate others. They get a kick out of it. Worst of all, they never take any responsibility for their behavior. Now many of them with that attitude are becoming adults and having more of an influence on our society. I have no idea how they slipped it past all of the lefties who inevitably work on these things, but In Star Trek 6, as the Federation President is addressing the Klingons, he says "We must redefine progress to mean that just because we can do a thing, it doesn't mean we must do that thing."

That's actually a remarkably conservative thought to have come out of post-TOS Star Trek, and I think, one that really speaks to us where we're at right now. The real question is how do we do that redefining, and make the majority of neutrals question this inexorable drive of "progress" for its own sake?

328 And on the public restroom thing.....

The deal is, the issue is not just whether some guy can identify as woman, walk in to restroom and rape women. It's some guy walking around naked in the locker room at the gym. How about co-ed showers in high school gyms, college dorms and military barracks? Yep, no possibility for trouble there. The issue is this. Until recently, a man in a women's restroom or locker room was clearly out of place and the threat potential was more readily apparent. Now, you must put blinders on and assess the situation. Is that guy here because he identifies as a woman or because he's a voyeur? If he's a voyeur and I confront him, what repercussions will 8 face when people claim I violated his civil rights?

The point is not to promote fairness and tolerance but to force people to distrust their own innate survival instinct; to halt their process of determining right and wrong. The tiny number of people in society who are "transgendered" are merely being used as a battering ram against your well-evolved nature and instinct.

And the more they get people to halt their process of determining right and wrong, the closer they are to having a world where nothing is right or wrong, which will quickly be replaced by The Party's new morality when it gets out of hand.

333 326 319 Because maximum perversity is the goal.

I don't think that's quite it, but you might find the difference academic. Ace said in the podcast that liberals try to uproot the status quo, and conservatives of different types will come together to stop it. He said that the liberal idiom is like a shark, it has to keep moving forward all the time.

Similar to what he said about McGuffins and liberal thinking. They don't do things to have them done, they do things to be the sort of person who does things.

Posted by: BourbonChicken at May 08, 2016 01:32 AM (VdICR)

They also do things to simply piss people off whom they don't like. Too many adult liberals have the maturity of a child or a young teenager and thus like to do things to aggravate others. They get a kick out of it. Worst of all, they never take any responsibility for their behavior. Now many of them with that attitude are becoming adults and having more of an influence on our society. That's why I'm very pessimistic about the country's future.

That's where Sunnstein comes in.....in "Nudge", he posits that a government should always be annoying in some petty, stupid, unsupportable way -- so that, when general annoyance at government spikes, it can retreat on that petty, stupid, unsupportable thing and let an exhausted populace breathe.....and continue wholesale rapine and looting everywhere else. For example, he would assert that the government should keep transgender bathrooms on Page One of every newspaper, above the fold, so that the Federal corruption of the entire healthcare industry can be managed. If people start burning Federal buildings and lynching Federal employees, they can "reluctantly" give ground on the transgender bathrooms issue (which they don't care about, anyway) -- which would leave a relieved population to "recover".....albeit with significant losses.

Sunnstein's entire point is that Government should continually annoy its populace to further the grander aims of Government. We're paying people who believe their job is to be a constant pain-in-the-ass so we won't revolt and only pay people who do things we want done.

354 @Cato- Absolutely! The point not a world without morals, it's a world without YOUR morals! Leave a society without identity, direction, guidance or history so that it can be reshaped in the "new progressive way" (new Soviet man!). You'll notice how in nearly every great "people's revolution", there's always the identification and perpetuation of a victim class (classes), the tearing down of the old order including almost always the church, the persecution of victimizers and eventual collapse. But ever notice that when the glorious new order is formed, they are always worse? The purges of the lazy, the intellectual, the hedonistic and revolutionary are far worse than anything those groups faced before. ALWAYS! Somebody like Cora Segal aka Trigglypuff, would not survive a year in the fat-queer-feminist anarcho-Marxist society she imagines for herself. If the 1500 calories a day weren't bad enough, the screaming obscenities and insane flailing wouldn't be welcomed at the Party Syndicate Congress. 15 minutes in a labor camp would be a death sentence!

On that note, and having spent the evening being unusually chatty rather than lurking, I must take my leave. Good night fellow morons and moronettes!

It's the putting up of the sign.

385 Hat, Farmer -- you're both honorable regulars. Please be sure you're not talking past each other.
Posted by: cthulhu at May 08, 2016 02:48 AM

Apparently that is the case. No idea this was the Hat. Just in on the convo on age of consent. Someone, I didn't know who was claiming a historical fact that DE had the age of consent as seven.

Never heard of such a thing and asked for verification. Got nothing other than a link to other links, that's not how you find the truth, as I said you need primary sources. Else we are all lost on internet BS.

I thought there was a troll here promoting pedophilia. No idea it was the Hat arguing w/ me.

I'm sorry if you are offended Hat, the pedophilia thing was directed at a possible troll, that's all.

Feel free to ignore anything I say for the rest of the night. Well actually, ya'll should just ignore what I say all the time if I think about it.

Yeah. I got to patrol "Upper Campus" as a sophomore (Student Security Aide).

"Why are you here! We're Seniors!"

"Work Study!"

"This is OUR COMMON ROOM!"

"Kinda why I'm here. I'm actually, personally, CURIOUS as a fellow student, about how much MORE you can fuck-up a grand piano other than jizzing on it."

"Hey! That was WAY before your time!"

SRSLY? I'd *love* to hear more about it (not really) but don't you have a THESIS to write?

Shut Up. Get Bed or Get Writing!

390 As a freshman in college, living in a coed dorm, things occassionally got out of hand. One fine evening (or early morning, my memory is unclear on that point) our RA came down the hall and told us that we needed to pipe down because he was trying to masterbate.

After giggling our butts off, we did, indeed, quiet down.

391 "That which cannot go on, will not."

cthulhu's (and many others) argument

*see Venezuela, Detroit, Puerto Rico, etc.*

Now come the the Central States Pension Fund (that would be the one that the Teamsters get their retirement checks from) -- it has under $17 billion in assets, and $35 billion in future liabilities; it now has 1 person paying in for every 4 getting a check. With $2.8 billion in payouts every year, it'll be flat broke in 10 years.

An attempt by the board of CSPF to cut bennies in half was shot down by the Treasury Dept., because their assumed 7.5% roi was TOO HIGH.

Heh. hmmm, bailout or a couple of million angry Teamsters in the streets; yeah it's going to be pretty.

393 Sheesh. I got to this little party late tonight indeed. I haven't been around as I've been going through a ringer with my mother. Any regulars may remember I mentioned she had knee replacement surgery and then my father had to go the hospital with balance problems and sky high blood pressure.

Well I thought all was well. My mother was home. Well, for a little over a week, I noticed something was wrong. She had this worried look on her face and was sort of in a funk. Well, the last couple of days, she broke down. She's having some sort of major depressive episode. Absolutely irrational, full of guilt, thinking she's made everybody mad and has done awful things and all that. She's in a terrible state of mind.

Totally irrational. I don't know what happened, if it's some of the medications and we're sort of in a debate about what to do.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at May 08, 2016 04:33 AM (DW+jj)

394 Wow! Got up a few minutes ago to get a drink of water, drank it, and was on my way back to bed. Looked out the window, and a brilliant display of Northern Lights was in action.

Grabbed my little digital camera, went outside, and tried to take some pics. Could not find a "bulb" or "time" setting on the dial. Got one faint blur for my trouble, before the batteries died.

You know, with a film camera, I could have a chance at some awesome pics. Grrr. Rest the camera on a railing, set the shutter to "B", and hold the button down for a ten-count. Oughta work.

I would suggest writing down the names of all her new meds and researching the side effects of each.

Then check to see if any combination of the new drugs have side effects when combined.

Posted by: Mrs. Huma Wiener at May 08, 2016 04:51 AM (WVsWD)

396 While I am not aware of any drugs that can cause depression, that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Many drugs do alter moods but not in a specific way. They may just amplify what is already there.

397 /off sock

I always do that.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois Not a master of the Sock Puppet. at May 08, 2016 04:54 AM (WVsWD)

398 Glad I checked back. One of the new drugs they put her on is Eliquis, an anticoagulant (blood thinner, as some call them). Depression is listed as a psychological side effect, with an incidence rate of 1 - 10%.

I was able to talk to a nurse who assists one of her doctors and she pooh-poohed that. The side effects are all the adverse events recorded in trials during testing, and postmarketing I think, and they'll always say that doesn't say anything about causation, and poo-poo the notion that an anticoagulant can do something like that.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at May 08, 2016 05:02 AM (DW+jj)

399 That would be the culprit then. Have you looked for an alternative drug? Is she also taking an Asprin a day?

403 F'ing Verizon.

The DSL package we purchased, (about the only internet provider in this area), claims d/l speeds of "up to" 7.5 Mbs. The best I've seen, after three weeks, is 0.2 Mbs. Half the time, I don't even get that. It just inexplicably dies entirely. Calls to Verizon have done no good, as they simply claim it has to be the wires in my house, (ignoring the fact that the previous tenants, which are good friends of ours, had no issues with internet at all for the few years they lived here).

It died again yesterday, and finally came back on this morning. I called Verizon yesterday, and they grudgingly admitted that it appears to be a problem with their equipment. It magically turned back on this morning, at it's usual blindingly fast dial up speed. I can at least take advantage of the opportunity to check the news, weather, and stuff before it dies again.

On the plus side, there's no way in hell I'll ever hit that monthly 10 GB data cap Verizon saddle's their DSL customers with.

406 Hi 'rons,

I'm looking for good books on the history of surveillance; mostly the NSA, but I'll happily take information about other agencies.

Also, conventions and practice of modern espionage. There's some wiggle room in "modern" of course, as I don't know what timeframe's practices have mostly been declassified by relevant agencies. I'm just looking to get a general sense of what it consists of in the modern era.
