ONT 5/5/2016: Everybody knows, ONTin' ain't Easy edition. [krakatoa]

First off, I'd like wish Maetenloch Godspeed on his trip, and I hope he finds much joy and success in balancing work, family & fun while in Japan.

Caring for our parents as they age is the duty of all children, but it is also a privilege in many ways. I am in the planning stages to turn my own basement into an apartment dwelling for my mother, and while there will be hurdles, I am looking forward to her being able to spend some quality time with her granddaughter.

While Maet is off attending to his life outside of the HQ, the graveyard shift is once more stuck with the usual young guns from the bullpen(1) who have so competently and admirably filled in for him in the past few years.

You get me to kick it off though.

For those of you who didn't have to stamina to read Ace's entire liveblog review of Star Wars, Episode VII, please allow me to condense it for you in 3 words: "Lena Dunham's snootch."

I've had this on my tabs for a while. Are you one of the lost Superheroes among us?
You may be our only hope to prevent the next epidemic that the ubiquitous use of antibiotics & the overuse of antibacterials is leading us towards ...

...or maybe it will just be good old scientific nano-tech. Which sounds promising but, being the paranoid tin-foil hat aficionado I am, I can't help but wonder what they are going to do about that last tenth of a percent.

Angel Falls from Indonesian Sky!

As Freud said, sometimes a sex doll is just a sex doll.

The government pretty much obeys one law at all times: That of unintended consequences. Here is why your gas cans, damn near literally, suck.

For any of the horde thinking there's a future in identifying as a quadriplegic streetfighter, just know you will have doubters and bullies at every turn. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS. BE WHO YOU ARE.

And most importantly, do not stop filming. Stay gold, centaurboy.

This ONT brought to you by the Common Clay of a New America.

You know.

(1)Do not operate heavy machinery while bullpen ONT.* Do not iron bullpen ONT. Do not hold bullpen ONT from the wrong end. Talk to your doctor to be sure that you are healthy enough for bullpen ONT. Bullpen ONT include no guarantees and under no circumstances assume liability for negligent use** of ONT. With great bullpen ONT comes great responsibility. This also applies to good bullpen ONT, so-so bullpen ONT, and downright bad bullpen ONT.

* Really? Really. I suppose "heavy" is in the eye of the onanist.
** Especially that one!

Just tried to buy one of the old metal kerosene cans because one of my halfway decent plastic gas cans split along the top seam, thank goodness it didn't fail on the bottom seam!

My trick is to drill a hole in the top handle and use a brass screw as the non-vent fix! At one time, you could buy oil drain pans with a vent that you could carefully pry off and re-use for other venting purposes.

The last building in which I worked prior to retiring had been remodeled and the "eco-friendly" no flush urinals were installed. About three years in, their odor was a thing of beauty.

93 Misanthropic Humanitarian, I just saw an article about steelhead fishing in Great Lake states. I assume that includes Wisconsin. Just curiosity since there aren't a lot of steelhead in Virginia.

102 My gerry cans work quite nicely with the new spouts. I don't see what the problem is...

Oh, the green slip ring one must twist to unlock them is a bit of bother, and the end caps aren't tethered and tend to get lost unless one ties a string to them.

Mine flow fine and stop when the tank is full, which is nice feature. I always thought the air vents on these things were inside the nozzle itself. This would explain why they stop pouring when one's topped off...

You know -- the one that passed Proposition 13 to limit property tax increases, elected Ronald Reagan as governor, and all that. Testify, my brother. Mrs. Guevara and I are looking at places to which to flee from the People's Republic, but we see disturbing metastases in some of them. It was supposed to be like that, just a fun, Mexican-AMERICAN celebration.
You might see people in Bumsquat, WV having a Cinco de Mayo party, just as they had St. Patrick's Day ones. Tacos, tequila, Corona, silly sombreros, just like green beer and leprechauns. And the partiers wouldn't have a drop of Mexican or Irish blood in their veins.

Possibly an option for small motors, since they do this in the filbert orchard during pruning season:

Buy a pressurized hand sprayer. Use it for your gas or your two-stroke mix.
Try to get the one with the buna rings for the more pervasive chemicals.

Even better than that is no-one will steal a half full sprayer. You have no idea what poison is in that.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot Jr. at May 05, 2016 11:18 PM (k4M/B)

Couple reasons.

1. They no longer have a super majority, a couple Reds having been popped for various felonies. (For example, Leland Yee, gun control advocate, for selling RPGs to Muslim terrorists.)

2. Prop. 13, although desperately hated by the Reds (including Jerry Brown, back in the day), is kind of a third rail politically. Think of it as a conservative version of Social Security. Repealing it - it's a constitutional amendment, IIRC - would bring down a firestorm on the Reds who voted for it.

So while they detest it ... they live with it. For now, at least.

That question has been the third rail in California politics.

It's not just because it raises money for them to fund programs to help the gay polar bears stop smoking, although that's part of it.

It's because it selectively targets property owners, i.e., the bourgeoisie, whom the Reds hate, and provides the Reds with funds with which to buy votes from the underclass.

Today I tore down the second engine from that pair of little Honda MX bikes I scored at the dump last week. Tming chain had jumped, and really messed up the cam sprocket, and filled the whole shebang with filings. Strangely enough, the crank sprocket seems almost untouched.

So I picked the right engine to work on the first go-round. This one is now all apart in a box, dripping with solvent. But clean. I may see if I can score some cheap parts on eBay. And, the exhaust valve got whacked. Piston, cylinder, and bottom end seem to be OK.

Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki

Liquid on Earth has this amazing property that when heat is applied in a judicious manner, it not only cooks the surrounding contents, it evaporates.

Amazingly enough if you apply enough heat you might be able to remove absolutely all liquid in a matter of minutes. Some might even moderate the amount of heat to the point of retaining a moderate amount of lubricity and avoid turning a delicious meal into a carbonized product.

You add the beer to help the falvors combine. Nothing more offputting than a chilie with big chunks of ingrediants. You add the refried beans and corn tortilla chips to thicken it up. Cooking over a long period of time will drive out the moisture and further thicken it up.

If she dies before I do and her grave is not hidden as I expect it to be, I might take a quart and pour it in their name. My prediction is he keeps his male genitalia after making a big announcement about the haters keeping him from moving forward--garnering another spate of sympathy and attention. So he will be like a lot of other heavily altered transvestites--prancing around in women's clothes, with breasts, a shaved adams apple, and a penis that can be tucked away. Without his Olympic background and the Kardashians, he is just another sad old mess in a dress.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at May 05, 2016 11:49 PM (oKE6c)

It is pretty close to the southern end of Silicon Valley -- beyond is agricultural land and Gilroy, the garlic capital of the US.

But, seriously, the San Jose area's "natural environment" is almost as contaminated as its superfund sites. There's a hill in the middle of the city that is thoroughly contaminated with naturally-occurring asbestos, and the almaden quicksilver mines have rocks that leach mercury. People knew and understood this back in the day of the Spanish occupation, but put-up with it because of the resources and opportunities found here.....partially because of the geology.

Who are these "U.S. officials"?

>>Some of Hillary Clinton's closest aides, including her longtime adviser Huma Abedin, have provided interviews to federal investigators, as the FBI probe into the security of her private email server nears completion, U.S. officials briefed on the investigation tell CNN. The investigation is still ongoing, but so far investigators haven't found evidence to prove that Clinton willfully violated the law the U.S. officials say.

The story at CNN says the FBI and DOJ declined to comment.

So who are these "U.S. officials" who were briefed?

Which reminds me, I see that Obama is proposing that the limit on eagle kills by wind turbines is being raised to 4,200/year, four times the current limit:
---
"Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe said the proposal will "provide a path forward" for maintaining eagle populations while also spurring development of a pollution-free energy source that's intended to ease global warming, a cornerstone of President Barack Obama's energy plan.

Ashe said the 162-page proposal would protect eagles and at the same time "help the country reduce its reliance on fossil fuels" such as coal and oil that contribute to global warming. "
----
That right there is some prime doublespeak. BTW, that is per power company.

Really, "Provide a path forward for maintaining eagle populations".

The Obama administration loves them some 'forward'.

404 Mercury is a chronic poison, not so much an acute poison. If you worked in the cinnabar mines day after day, you would get sick. But just handling small bits of it for short periods of time is not a problem.

Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 06, 2016 12:30 AM (+4mdw)

Yeah, if you didn't use the proper safety gear for that environment. I expect working in an underground mercury mine without a respirator could lead to cumulative poisoning by inhalation of mercury vapor. That's what got some of the gold miners who used mercury to amalgamate gold, and then retorted the amalgam in an unsafe manner. Hatters, too.

You expose a finger to a fluorine gas leak, you have a divot in that finger or are missing the end; you have a drop of weak hydrofluoric acid on your skin....and your bones are on fire as soon as the lightest and seventh lightest atoms can slip through your flesh.

Did not know that. Impressive. Grew up about 45 minutes away from FLW's Fallingwater house in Western PA.

Bladerunner also featured a great soundtrack by Vangelis. I'm a bit of a fanboy when it comes to Bladerunner. I love that flick.

*clears throat*

For my next number, in honor of an obscure Mexicanish holiday, here's a sad little risqué romantic ballad, with an island-Samba beat, which I wrote 'way back in the late 1970s. Being as the band is too drunk to play, I'll speak it a capella, and you can imagine the tune.

Two margaritas and a piña colada,
Sounds like the beginning of a song!
Two margaritas and a piña colada,
Sadly, didn't last very long.

507 We're still waiting for the second second stage burn. That has to succeed for the primary mission to be successful.

Remember, the main thing is to put the paying customer's satellite into the proper orbit. The customer doesn't care what happens to the first stage once it's discarded. Every other rocket would simply dump it into the ocean.

It is very cool that SpaceX is able to do experimental R&D on first stage landing during operational missions, rather than use expensive test flights.

557 Caring for our parents as they age is the duty of all children, but it is also a privilege in many ways...Krak

Maet good wishes for your trip if you ever check in and see this, which I hope you won't as you will have too much to do in Japan.

We took care of the wife's folks tonight. Took them out for her Dad's 85th and Mother's Day to a steakhouse of their choice. Yikes, for special occasions they do like expensive places, biggest dinner bill I've paid in my life.

Starts out w/ we pick them up at the asst living place, I'm driving. As we approach a speed bump to get out of the place they both start shouting SLOW DOWN THERE'S A SPEED BUMP!

Now we've been riding w/ her driving in their van for 4 days over the same speed bump, they know we've left every day over the same speed bumps, but because she wasn't in control they had to go nuts!

I slow down as I planned and pass over just fine, but really, is this normal? Well they told friends about it and the woman driving went over it at full parking lot speed and injured her husband who was in a cast or something. Whatever, this is BS.

GRRR, great start to the big meal. Get there and drop them off at the front door. Arrowhead Grill, great food if you are in the Peoria/Glendale AZ area, but very expensive.

We had a great meal, good time. They know how to do things right, but you better know how to order. Side of Yukon Gold potatoes, 12.99, I'll pass.

The steaks were some of the best I've ever had. And we had plenty of leftovers for another meal. As we should after I paid the bill which was $325 w/ tip. Special occasion I guess.

So J was going to drive home, as I'd would have a few drinks and she doesn't drink lately. Actually I'd only had 3 beers, but I knew I didn't want to listen to the grief I'd got driving there.

She drove, got all kinds of hell for not turning at the right place. We got there just fine w/ little detours.

They have to be in by 8 to get in the front door, keep in mind her Dad is blind and her Mom has this walker that needs to be drug in and out of the truck. There timely, they are actually a bit pleasantly buzzed...locked out of the front door at 5 to 8.

I'm thinking F... this place they are paying big money to live in. We would have to load them back in, and then walked and go to a back entrance where they have a key.

FIL, blind as he is, said there's a key entrance nearby, I ran and found it. I let them in and we had a happy ending!

All in all a good time. Can't wait for tomorrow w/ them. If we lived in the same town I think I'd die an early death, LOL.

558 But in an interview with Bloomberg Politics, which reported on the switch, she emphasized that her decision was not connected to Donald J. Trump's being the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

She described herself as a voter as a "provisional Trump" and a "never Hillary," referring to the leading Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Pressed on Thursday about why she switched political parties, Ms. Matalin told Bloomberg Politics that she was a Republican in the "Jeffersonian, Madisonian sense."

"I'm not a Republican for a party or a person," she continued. "The Libertarian Party represents those constitutional principles that I agree with."

I did a study on the so-called subsidies that the oil companies get. There are none. The thing the liberals call a "subsidy" is the so-called "oil depletion allowance". This is a tax deduction against the cost of oil exploration and the depreciation of the worth of a capitol asset. It is a tax deduction much like tax deductions for all other cost of doing buisness and long term asset depreciation, therefore it is most definitely not a subsidy.
However those green crap energy companies do in fact not only get huge tax deductions, but actual cash payments as well. I linked to a story about another well known solar rip-off company that went tits up after the cash payouts ended. They had managed to milk the tax payers out of $2.5M cash payouts through Obama crony corruption.

Why is it that the MFM never exclaims about the fraud and abuse going on there?

644 "...this senseless tragedy could have been prevented."

There is one clear behavioral indicator whose existence we might be able to exploit, as we fight this continuing score of violent people using inanimate objects to commit violence.

Mandatory NRA membership.....

The number of NRA members who commit violent crimes using firearms is exceedingly low.

So just like the theory of giving poor people homes for free, or below market will cause them to become upright and solid homeowners...
If we make everyone an NRA member, the violence will decrease,

Right?

At constitution dot org you can put "the laws of nations" in the search box and scroll down to section 212 for a definition.

Then you can go to wiki (which I'm pretty sure you can confirm else where if you must) and read about Ben Franklin's receipt of three copies of that same book and his thank you reply.
That's in case you want to try to use a certain cob's weak argument from some time back.
And if you want to say "But judges have decided..."

Wickard vs Filburn

I must have missed it at the time.

We normally don't buy produce there, because for the most part it's all organic - which translates to scrawny.

We do buy the olives out of the olive bar, which is open. From the closed cases we get the spanakopita and zucchini fritters.

I'll be back there on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how this has affected sales and traffic.
