1 One way to look at this is that the election is over and we can all go back to our lives now. Because no matter what happens, the next President of the United States is going to be a liberal New Yorker with a tiny penis.

4 Finally! The day we've all waited for. The day when we commemorate all of the perversions possible to do with mayonnaise.

Little known fact: This special holiday's first name was "Mayo Ocho Cinco" when it was still thought that there were only 85 possible perversions possible to do with mayo, but after society decided to embrace whole heartedly the transgender lifestyle, myriads of new perversions, kept hidden by traditional societal norms, became suddenly acceptable.

So go to the fridge and join the celebration!

Now that Trump will in all likelihood become the nominee, he'll get my vote, and if he wins I will be there to constantly yank at his horrible hairpiece to demand he does the right things.

I hope that his minions and the rest of us do the same, because his natural instinct will be to veer ever leftward. It's who he is politically. And anyone who says otherwise is a moron. And not the AOSHQ variety either.

Fair warning.

--

As Rush has said repeatedly, Trump is not an ideologue. I don't think he really has much grasp on how the left-leaning views he likely holds is so detrimental to a free country. He's very focused on America first from a business perspective, without having much grasp on what's really been happening to individual liberty in this country and our astroglide into socialism. I see little to no evidence he's made that connection in any sense, or that he understands the limits of the Constitution and why those limits are there.

43 I got willowed on the dual purpose ONT/EMT -

510 Now that idiot Trump is talking about minimum wage??? A real conservative would say, "it's not the governments job to make wage levels in private businesses. Period."

You'd think as a businessman he's know that.

Pure (ish) conservatism ran for office in the form of Ted Cruz.

It couldn't get past the primaries.

Our nation basically consists of Wal Martians who exist for their own pleasure, their own interests and their own selfish, piggish desires. They want it now and they want it 'free'.

Conservatism can't win with that mindset. It is wrong to say that there are no patriots left. But we are the shrinking minority.

Hate him personally all you want but what he is doing is purely pragmetic. He is not a businessman right now. He is a politician.
What Trump is doing is rhetorically similar to what every candidate does did in order to win.

"Do you support x or y?"

"I support x and y and whatever people who might vote for me want."

He is not playing to you. Or anybody like you.

Why? Because you are already in the bag. Or you're not.

He can't take giant dump on the minimum wage without losing the votes of at least some percentage of Bernie's more libertarian disaffected millenials.

It's a helluva a lot smarter than , oh I don't know, getting branded as the guy who wants to destroy tampons?

You handle that kind of silly BS by nuking it in the cradle.

50 Mortimer @ 43, this is just a long spin attempting to justify the pandering of politicians.

I
thought we used to believe around here, even among the pro-Trump
segment, that Republicans should not engage in a bidding war with
Democrats about how much free shit to give away, because the Democrats
will always win that bidding war. Now you are saying "oh sure, if Joe
Sixpack wants free shit, the Republicans should totally pander to him,
because they aren't going to get his vote otherwise"?

He has a lot of common sense, minus ideology. He might be what you would call "liberal" [not disagreeing precisely] but he's also not an ideological liberal.

If "conservatism" - the original kind, not the calcified ideology that passes for it now - is nothing more than common sense spoken aloud, then maybe leave room to be pleasantly surprised.

60 Off the cuff observation:

This election cycle, I think, is exposing something that has been submerged for quite a while now and that is how irrelevant and outmoded the 'two party' system has become - at least with respect to the current two parties.

There aren't just two major opposing political points of view anymore and it's becoming increasingly difficult to shoehorn American's into the parties as they are now structured. The system worked well, especially for politicians for decades, but the belief sets espoused by them are as antiquated as my three year old desktop.

I think that it may be possible at some point in the future, for the varied belief sets to recoalesce into two parties, but for right now, I don't think either of the parties hold much actual relevance to the beliefs of the constituences they purport to serve. Political insiders, I think, over the years have assumed too much power upon themselves and have acted - been allowed to act - too independently from the members of their parties and they have crafted a political culture that serves them and their beneficiaries and benefactors, at the expense of actual constituents.

And this is yet another reason to celebrate this special mayonnaise holiday.

73 @43 I read what Trump said it it goes more like this:

Q: Bernie is offering people $15 min wage. What will you offer?

Trump (crude paraphrase):

Bernie is saying you can't live on $7.10/hour and he has a point.
(Bypass the competition's product and talk about customer need)

We're looking into that
(We have our own product)

We will have so many jobs that people will be making much much more than $15 / hour
(And our product will be much better)

Microsoft used to do a lot of this vaporware stuff when they were not quite ready and the competition already had the product out. It worked to some extent

No, we are really not and frankly I'm a bit sick of it.

People purport to want to win, because Democrats win at all costs and then stomp on every one of us. Most people's families are hurting financially and can't figure out the future. A few months ago some people wanted to burn it down. Now all of a sudden, they are going to be clarion horns telling us how the antichrist has just been nominated, and therefore implying the autocratic, socialist bent coming from Democrats and their candidate might not be that bad.

Sure thing ignorant asshole.

I don't particularly understand the Trump phenomena, but then, I still don't understand the two terms of Obama. But that's politics.

I voted for Cruz. He lost. Now I will stick with Trump. The guy is breaking turnout records and winning demographics we have not in some time. Again, I don't get it. But his message is appealing to a large swath of voters.

Do we need more? Well, sure. He has work to do.

But instead of some introspection, we have garbage posing as intellectual decisions and the ethereal "principle" trope being thrown out by so-called "conservative" sites for whom I now have as much respect as I do for liberals. We have post after post here now virtually doing the same, yet very little on the mountain of material against The Hag.

And I'm sorry for the rant, but I am tired of watching my friends and neighbors suffer while a bunch of people with no temerity, balls, brass or foresight sit around actively working against the one chance we have.

There are and have been a lot of good people who post here, and I mean that as no insult to them. I've just had it with the illogical idiocy.

80 That's not a Canadian "town" evacuated and burning down because of a forest fire, it's a city. 80,000 people evacuated. It's the oil sands city, very modern, massive growth and build-up in just the last ten years, so unlike traditional towns and cities in the northern boreal forest, who are well aware of the constant danger from forest fires, they decided not to protect the city with massive fire breaks, clearing the forest away from the buildings, they went modern and green and blended into the forest and saved the trees. You'd think the insurance companies would be smart enough to intervene, but no...

There is a difference between (1) observing reality and accepting the observations as valid, and (2) advocating for what we think our politicians should do in order to affect the change that we want to see happen.
I agree that there are a lot of FSA types out there. That is the reality. I disagree that the correct response is to attempt to pander to them, or to try to outbid the Democrats on how much free shit to give away.
T'his is basically the Bush 2000 strategy when it came to Medicare Part D. Bush and Gore were in a bidding war as to how much to pander to seniors when it came to prescription drugs. It all accepts the implicit liberal premise that the government SHOULD be providing drugs to seniors. And from what I understand, it was a major reason around here as to why Bush was denounced as a big-government liberal type, when he made good on his campaign promise and massively expanded Medicare.
How is what you are saying not falling into the same trap?

________

Its more Scott Adams Master Persuader crap, specfically it is Strategic Ambiguity. You can read his min wage statement and it can mean anything, but it *sounds* positive. That was the point of it.

Trump's statement was all mumbo jumbo - He said he wants to bring jobs back b/c he is open anything that helps the workers. Trump won't categorically rule out raising the wage, but he won't categorically raise the wage either. Trump is keeping his mind open b/c just wants to bring the good jobs back and is considering what will help.

If you argue aganist what he said (which was nothing) then you lock yourself down into a position where Trump can ridicule you. "What? I want to figure out how to bring the jobs back! Why are you against bringing the jobs back and helping the workers?"

He is baiting Hillary & the Dems to attack his non-position.

147 Good morning Horde!

"My gut is telling me Trump beats Clinton in a landslide" - Rush Limbaugh

There was some misinformation being tossed around in that CNN Poll thread yesterday. It is a shame that Ace doesn't typically look at the morning threads, he could probably make use of this insight.

As was mentioned, a new poll entered the RCP average yesterday as CNN/ORC released their new poll for the month. This poll was Clinton 54 to Trump 41. As I have said, what I look for is changes in poll "trajectory" to get a sense that a campaign is being successful with voters. This poll shows no movement for Trump over the last month, last month the poll was 53/41.

The RCP average changes slightly with the addition of this poll, the average is now Clinton 47.3 and Trump 40.8, giving Clinton an average lead of 6.5%.

I have a spreadsheet where I am tracking the polling over time, let me point out a few trends that show that Rush's gut is really just telling him indigestion. Trump will lose this election, unless he can make some fundamental breakthroughs.

Look at Trump's numbers across all of the polls in the RCP average, INCLUDING Rasmussen (the only poll where he is winning):

41, 43, 39, 40, 41, 41

This is a VERY static support number. There is a spread of only 4% across all the polls hovering around 40%. This looks a lot like a hard ceiling of support at 40%. Looking back at the last 6 weeks of polling averages, this has barely changed:

39.3, 39, 39, 38.8, 38.8, 38.8, 38.8, 39.1, 38.6, 38.6, 38.9, 39, 38.7, 39.5, 39.5, 39.5, 40.5 (Rasmussen enters), 40.1, 40.4, 40.5, 40.8

This is again a very tight spread, varying only 1.8% over 6 weeks and hovering slightly under 40%.

The variability in the numbers is all on the Clinton side of the polling. The current RCP polls are:

48, 46, 50, 47, 39, 54

This is a much higher degree of variability with a 15 point spread across the polls. This variability has been shown over the last 6 weeks as well:

48.5, 50.4, 50.4, 50, 50, 50, 50, 49.7, 49.4, 49.4, 49.4, 49.6, 49.1, 48.8, 48.8, 48.8, 49, 47.4, 47.1, 46.7, 47.3

That is a spread of 4.7% over the last 6 weeks. It is a much higher spread around the center point of about 48%.

What does this all mean?

It means that right now Trump has a hard support ceiling at about 40%. The voters that are swinging are vacillating between can they vote for Clinton or not? They are moving back and forth between "I can vote for the shrew" and "I don't know what I'm going to do, maybe sit this out".

This means that under the current conditions, the best situation is those voters decide to not vote. But that leaves a hard floor of 46% for Clinton. This represents the core Democrat voters that are comfortable voting for her and will vote for her, despite all of the negatives that she has against her.

Trump's campaign style is to tear down other candidates. That will be ineffective against Clinton because of that hard floor of 46% she has. He can convince voters to not vote for her, but not enough of them to overcome the 5% differential between his ceiling and her floor.

The only way he can win is to convince those undecided voters to vote FOR him. But those voters are already heavily polarized against him. The racist/islamaphobe meme is already baked into their decision making process. He has to offer them something to get over their resistance to voting for him.

I'm not a Trump fan, so I'm not the guy to say what that could be. But right now, the numbers are firmly against him. He is on track to a significant loss unless he can change his style and win over people who don't want to vote for Clinton.

One final point. Being tied going into the election isn't good enough. He needs a lead of around 2% to win. He does not have a professional campaign and he will get burned by Democrat GOTV and fraud. To win Florida he has to be able to overcome 70,000 votes in Miami appearing out of nowhere to vote for Clinton.

159 I think John Mulaney nailed Trump.

Trump is what a hobo imagines what being a rich guy is like. "If I had a billion dollars, I'd build tall buildings and put my name on them. I'd fly in a private jet with gold plated bathrooms. And I'd bang supermodels with big tits."

And the reason Trump won is because he's like a good Family Feud contestant. When the other candidates were asked in a debate "What do you think Americans are most concerned about?" They would talk about National Security or Economy. Trump just says, "They're worried because our country has big problems," and everybody cheers.

Posted by: V the K at May 05, 2016 09:00 AM (O7MnT)

160 I either agree with you or I think the conservative or conservatarian or libertarian party or whatever it is simply needs to focus on its opposition to authoritarianism and start talking that way. Every move the liberals make is authoritarian and it deprives individuals of freedom in hundreds of ways, hundreds of little decisions in your daily life now in the hands of Big Business as sponsored and enforced by Big Government.
Posted by: iforgot at May 05, 2016 08:46 AM (pC96u)

Really - what is 'conservatism' now? Social conservatism, econ? Both? Neither? It's even hard to define now.

Twenty years ago, the country still had fairly well defined rules - and standards - codes of conduct, if you will. It's almost as if nearly everyone woke up one morning and found there were no rules anymore, and if there were, nobody could agree on what they were. There are either no rules, rules that don't apply anymore, but people still want, or rules that do apply that many don't want. Society was reinvented and very few people bought into it.

He variously claims 1) to have looked at Hillary's server "like twice" because it was "voter stuff" that wasn't "interesting" -- and 2) that it was "hot stuff" full of "national security" info that he would read for hours after which he would go do his gardening. But they DO. The reason why we are seeing so many minimum wage *referenda* is because minimum wage *legislation* typically stalled in state legislatures, mostly due to Republican opposition. So the activist left bypasses the state legislatures, goes directly to the people with their Marxist "stick-it-to-big-business" arguments and their weepy "think-of-the-children" arguments and convince the public to support raising minimum wages, even in normally conservative states like Nebraska.

I mean, I don't know. I guess many people around here now think that Republicans should just pander to the mob, and if the people want minimum wage increases, then Republicans like Trump should give it to them, even if it makes poor economic sense.

213 I think John Mulaney nailed Trump.

Trump is what a hobo imagines what being a rich guy is like. "If I
had a billion dollars, I'd build tall buildings and put my name on them.
I'd fly in a private jet with gold plated bathrooms. And I'd bang
supermodels with big tits."

And the reason Trump won is because he's like a good Family Feud
contestant. When the other candidates were asked in a debate "What do
you think Americans are most concerned about?" They would talk about
National Security or Economy. Trump just says, "They're worried because
our country has big problems," and everybody cheers.

Yeah, I kinda figured that regulation insanity had something to do with it. Like the BS regulations that make it ok to produce [insert product or commodity here] but not in this country because of 'concern for the planet'. The only concern expressed in these regs is whose pockets the money goes into and how much money can be bilked from "hard working Americans" to pay for it.

Catherine Herridge is great at getting these leaks and interviews, but her style of journalism seems to be to simply report her latest findings, not to spell out the contradictions and info gaps this story still contains. She doesn't seem to be asking the followup questions that might resolve this guy's self-contradictions, although maybe she has her reasons -- doesn't want to come on as hostile to him, language barriers, limited time, who knows. If Hillary loses the FBI primary, a few journalists will write books about it and then we'll get the big picture with all the details filled in.

229 Trump is promoting leftist economic theory by even considering a minimum wage hike.

It's not just that it's leftist, it's that the minimum wage is WRONG, economically and morally.

Economically, it is a gross distortion on the labor market and hence on the market of all other goods and services. It is a giant thumb on the scales of the free market.

Oh, and don't forget how raising the minimum wage just encourages the illegal labor market.

Morally, it is wrong not only because it coerces businesses into serving as agents of the welfare state by forcing them to pay workers more than their labor is worth, but it also interferes in the freedom of contract between two consenting adults. Why should the state get involved if two free adults wish to agree on a wage that their betters in government would disapprove of?

And it doesn't even get into how the minimum wage consigns many otherwise worthy individuals to have no job at all because the market value of their labor is too far below the arbitrary minimum set by the state. It diminishes their dignity and self-worth being told that they can't get any job at all, for no good reason.

I don't think Trump understands these arguments *at all*, to be quite honest.

And we used to have politicians who could make arguments like this. They would appeal to people's sense of liberty and being left alone in the marketplace to pursue their dreams, rather than being pandered to with not just a leftist economic doctrine, but a demonstrably WRONG economic doctrine.

Heads up, friends... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. 260 I think one angle I've tried to pursue is that Cruz lost- but why?. And by the way, I don't think anyone questions he's "conservative". But still, he lost. That is, he could not get enough people to vote for him. That's ultimately how the game works and you can blame Trump, Kasich, Boehner, the weather, Sasquatch, aliens or whatever you want, but the fact is not enough people wanted to vote for him.

By the way, the "game" is the same in the general. This is electoral politics. You get the votes, you win. Like Obama said "I won". It's about the only truth he's muttered in eight years.

Introspection would be- well why not? Not who else contributed to that loss- but why didn't people vote for him? I think Cruz is probably one of the few people who figured out that was the issue and bowed out. He was honest, and at least for the time being he's not projecting blame. That's character and honesty.

Cutting you off in traffic, they show that finger.

Or in my parts, sometimes the stickers are most of what's holding the bumper on, or the car together. I have one that says "Keesler AFB." Now, it's mostly there to cover up where the AAA sticker came off and took paint with it. But damn if a couple of people haven't given me shit for that. Lost money in Bluxy, I guess.

It's not just that it's leftist, it's that the minimum wage is WRONG, economically and morally.

Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 05, 2016 09:23 AM (uAvJJ)

_________

Lets say that in order to win the election a candidate has to pretend to either

A) support a minimum wage Hike
B) oppose a minimum wage hike
c) consider both and make a decision about it after the election

Because we all have seen that any of those three positions can and have won elections at local, state and even national levels, depending on the time and circumstances.

Sweet - b/c Trump is good for all three A,B, & C w/ that feel good, but ultimately meaningless statement. If in November B or C is true then the Dems are screwed and Trump wins.

This is an election, not a theoretical economics class completely independent of actual voters.

What should Trump ultimately do? We agree - he should not raise the wage. What should Trump instead say? Exactly what he did say b/c it leaves him open to "do what is best for the workers" and he can declare after the election whatever he ends up doing IS "what is best for the workers"

Is that underhanded and dishonest? Yes, its politics.

Is ORC simply using the exact 2012 turnout model?

My next predicition is a low tier congressman/senator. Maybe even Newt. Trump will need someone to help him steer his way with The Hill. If he wins. Big IF

BBC radio had a piece on Chinas child policy.

They have family planning police. They go into the small towns and villages to examine the women and give abortions and sterilzations.

Every woman has an identify card that is linked to her e medical records. Every woman has a government issued IUD. I guess they do not trust them with the pill. Four times a year women have to submit to an ultrasound to ensure their government issued IUD is in place

When a woman wants to get pregnant she has to fill in a request for to seek permission. Even if she has never had a child before. When she receives permission she gets frequent ultrasounds looking for any abnormalities. If they detect any issues with the baby, it will be aborted

China had a one child policy, now its been increased to two.

If you have a child without permission, you will be forced to pay a "maintenance fee", a child tax basically. Some of the rural areas rely on these fees to support the local government. These fees are supposed to recompese the state for the extra burden the child will place on state resources. In reality, the moneys have been used for restaurant bills and expensive silk clothing.

Family planning officials are more powerful than police. They collect these "maintenance fees", and the central government gives them a quota of how much they are supposed to collect. If they do not make the quota, the money comes out of the family planning officials pocket.

So in order to collect these "maintenance fees", local familiy planning officials have hired the local mafias to collect. They will kidnap the father and other family members in order to compell the complaince of the pregnant mother. Sometimes they want the "maintenance fee" which can be as high as ten thousand US dollars. Sometimess they want the mther to abort, even if she is six months pregnant. These state hired mafias will kidnap and beat family members until they get what the want. They take the kidnapped family members to rundown hotels called "black jails".

As for polls being wrong, I thought in 2012 that they were wrong. And some of them were, Rasmussen greatly overstated Romney's support. But the RCP average nailed the final outcome of the election and was right this early out.

Remember the polls could be wrong in the other direction too. Hillary might beat him by 10 instead of 5.

366 There was an article in weekly standard around a week ago that did a really good post-mortem on Cruz v Trump - don't have the link handy.
It was part of a memo from a Cruz staffer I think.
Very objective.

Posted by: @votermom at May 05, 2016 09:43 AM (nbrY/)

National Review had one yesterday that's good.

A lot of insidery baseball stuff that perhaps shows some of the technical/organizational/financing glitches inside his campaign:

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/434916/ted-cruz-why-he-lost

But, this explains, one thing I was puzzled by, which is why Cruz never really pivoted, once he'd established himself as the most conservative conservative that ever conserved,

to hammer hard the kitchen table issues that concern Americans most right now.

He didn't see that as part of his narrowly conceived path to victory.

When Trump disrupted that path, he didn't retool and respond.

It's the old military problem of a plan, no matter how good, no matter how brilliant, not changing after first contact with the enemy.

380 On the minimum wage Trump is playing chess and you are all playing tic tac toe. The objective is not to check issue boxes. The objective is to reject the confines of political ideology and put concrete, measurable goals on the line on each issue. He's already done this on:

A wall
Trade deficits (measured in big round dollar values)
Jobs numbers
Increasing the size of the military

This is exactly how the GOP should have been playing every pissant, chippy little social advocacy issue for the last 20 years: "Yeah I'm open to [$15 minimum wage]. Let's talk about it." And make them run the numbers.

When you instead make it a theoretical economic question, a question of political theory and whether it's morally justifiable to have a minimum wage the issue is no longer, the issue cannot be, about the numbers. It has become another proxy for the "my faith vs your faith" fight that the left took over academia and the media and entertainment in order to win, and we're back on the hamster wheel of trying to fight the progressive hydra. The GOP bravely loses - whether by failure or by design, it's always a loss - and all the little LIV lemmings going "We did it! We have effected historic change!"

And when this program proves to be a middling mediocrity or an outright failure, this anger is harnessed and directed again at US, and lays the groundwork for the next big leftist push.

Through MESSAGE DISCIPLINE and HAVING A PLAN.

We've embraced this loser mentality. We like this fight. That's why the sidebar has an article about how losing to Trump has made Cruz a stronger right-wing politico.

2) Mark the Rube-b/c he literally ran as one thing then became Chuck Schumer's Fluffer...ie we already ran Juan McCain

3) Yeb Bush b/c if I need to be called a heartless bigoted asshole I have Barack Obama.

The main difference between those three and Trump is these assholes are "professional" politicians...

I was told repeatedly after 2008 and 2012 that the GOP needed to nominate a non-evangelical, pro-choice, moderate, preferably from New England to put those states into play.

Here he is.....those people who wantedhim are not happy.

It's an automated poll so the questions are asked and the person presses a number on their phone to respond. They took one standard deviation (about one sixth) of the respondents and tossed their results out for finishing the poll too fast.

So, if you had your mind made up and knew exactly who you were voting for, it was likely your response was tossed out.

441 This is an election, not a theoretical economics class completely independent of actual voters.

Posted by: TeamRawDog at May 05, 2016 09:51 AM (10hEu)

Well, this is the thing.

Even Ace wrote a blog post around this very thing, I think about this time last year-(if I'm remembering correctly)-

in that post he wanted a guy as the Republican nom who could, soft soap his positions to appeal to moderates and possibly Democrats while doing as he wished once in office.

ie. like Obama and every other Dim who runs for office, except the reverse. Obama ran to the right of McCain on some issues, for chissakes.

For better or worse, we got that guy...Trump.

Now, here is the point where the #nevertrumps jump in and start preening their feathers,

saying we're the chumps. Eh, maybe they're right.

But, the morons who think a candidate standing and spouting hardcore conservative slogans and positions are going to win this cycle or are proof, despite all previous experience, of conservative action once in office aren't paying attention.

Even Reagan didn't do that.

If that's all it took, Cruz would've won the nom straight up.

That's not where we're at now.

after 8 years of Obama, we're in a smeary, chaotic landscape- you have to be able to surf the chaos.

Trump appears to be able to do that.

We'll see.

As always, YMMV.

The difference is that Trump is not an ideologue, is on neither the right nor the left. That much is self evident. What makes him look like Obama is that he's playing the PR game at a very high level.

Why? What could he want? Could it be what he says?

What would a person capable of wresting control of the cultural and political narrative from the current power structure look like? What would they have to do in order to accomplish that?

What would you be willing to sacrifice to make it happen? If the sacrifice is my conservative ideology, I consider myself blessed beyond anything I'd dared to hope for.

A $15 minimum wage is a joke that shouldn't be
seriously discussed by anyone. He is a business owner. To assume as you
do that he simply hasn't formulated a position on the subject is
hilarious, asinine, childish magical thinking.

Actually, it is consistent with his pattern of being a shallow thinker and an unprincipled man who will change his positions to suit the audience he's talking to at the moment. So yes I do believe he might actually raise the minimum wage to $15/hr if he thought he could get some mileage out of it.

One of his core messages is jobs. Do you think he'd like to point to his job numbers in an economy with a $15 minimum wage?

Well, you see the left has this economic theory called demand-side economics. That if you give more people money, that they will take that money and spend it all and grow the economy. Basically, Keynesian stimulus. Perhaps you've heard of it. Now go ask your LIV types if they think Obama's Keynesian stimulus created jobs and lifted the economy out of the recession. Chances are they will say yes because that is what they've been told by Obama and his minions and their lapdogs in the media. So I have no illusions that Trump could pull the same type of stunt with whatever he wants to do with the minimum wage. He can raise it and then say "hey look how great it made America, it put more money into people's pockets!!!"

He's dismissing the issue entirely. "Yeah I'll consider it. Next."

If he was actually opposed to raising the minimum wage (which I doubt), and he clearly said so, the left would attack him for being a cruel heartless bastard, of course.
But now, since he is, according to you, "playing both sides", the left - and others too - will attack him for being an unprincipled slimy politician trying to have it both ways.
Of course the first attack is a false emotion-laden attack, but that is what they do. It is actually more cruel and more heartless to be depriving people of jobs by setting the minimum wage bar higher than the value of their labor.
The second attack, unfortunately for Trump, is actually truthful.

________

No, calling Trump slimy and trying to have it both ways doesn't do anything b/c in this day and age we expect politicians to be slimy. Its sad, but we almost want them to be slimy and won't accept them when they seem to clean.

Think about it, it hurts a politician a when a they appear too honest b/c your mind goes crazy imagining what scandal it will be when the other shoe to drops.

Like say...when Herman Cain blew up. Or Sarah Palin's daughters. When they seem good you want to find the problem. Like when a character is introduced in a movie that seems too good - you know they are the bad guy and begin looking for reasons why.

Another great example: Obama - he is a slimy as they come and nothing sticks to him.

While Romney - a fairly honest guy was smeared as a evil business man with binders full of women & a cruelly having a dog on the roof

So to bring it back to the minimum wage - yes, Trump playing both sides of the minimum will work and has worked before.

Actually, Trump has done with the NC bathroom/abortion positions, exactly what GOPe did when it came to amnesty: propose a liberal-friendly solution, and then when the outrage poured in from the conservative hinterlands, do an abrupt about-face and start pandering to the right. They changed only because they got backlash, not because it was what they sincerely wanted to do. It looks phony because it is. Same thing with Trump.

Would you prefer the principled GOPe position of sticking to their guns and passing Bush's amnesty? Or Schumer & Rubio's? You would respect and prefer that authenticity, yes?

No, of course not. You & I want them to bend to our will. No Amnesty.

I'm very glad we agree on that.

Instead Trump brought out the Great Wall of Trump - and it stuck. Now the debate is only about how much wall and how to make Mexico pay for it.

FYI: Charlie Cook was another "expert" who "expertly" predicted Trump would never be the nominee. His Cook Report calculations are about as accurate as his predictions.

Perhaps its time for Charlie to lossen his toupee a little....

470 TeamRawDog: "I understand that you want him to pick the tribal Conservative (or libertarian) orthodoxy..."

Tribal?

Are principles a primitive impulse, a result of our baser instincts toward a prejudice in favor of members of our tribe?

I'd like the Republican nominee to champion conservative principles in a convincing fashion, because a) whenever that's been tried, which is once, in my lifetime, by Reagan, it's won, and won big, b) that's the only way we'll ever reverse the ratchet of progressivism, by convincing people at a grassroots level to reject it, and finally c) because conservative principles are true. These are statements of truth, that distortions to markets impoverish us all, that the real minimum wage is zero, and that two men have a right to enter into any employment contract that they see fit.

Not out of some primitive yay-my-team tribalism.
