Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

z pet thread cover.jpg

It's that time again where we kick back and chat about pets. Does anyone have a pet that looks like this when you are in the kitchen or dining room?

I don't know about you but I am so jealous! What a remarkably trained animal. I'm happy when I can get my guy to sit/stay.

Here's a cute video sent in by a couple of our readers. If it's sent in by more than one Moron, it has to be good.

Here are a few pet and animal news items from this past week.

Let's meet the Pet Morons

z bitter jamie far.jpg

Moron Bitter Jamie Farr's Quick is our leadoff pet this weekend. A 1 year old Lab.

z rodney smith Fen.jpg
Meet Fen, he's an 8 month old Doberman Pinscher pup. Mr. R. Smith submitted this photo. Pup looks small for now.

z jtb red poodles.jpg

Mr. & Mrs. JTB sent in this adorable group of Toy Red Poodles. Meet Schnitzel, Liesel & Strudel.

z irish l murphy.jpg
What a cute puppy. Here's 10 month old Murphy. Per IrishEi don't let the cute looks fool ya. He's not an angel.

z great white snark doonga.jpg

Great White Snark enjoys taking his dog Doongara out for walks. Doongara is mostly Black Lab & snark.

z jinx the cat.jpg
Introducing Smokey or a/k/a El Gato. According to jinx the cat his cat reigns the household with an iron claw. The cat enjoys Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches.

z phreshone.jpg

Phreshone submitted this photo of Sara. A Golden Retriever rescued with a broken shoulder. Hope the little darling is feeling better.

z dave at buffalo roam.jpg
Looks like Dave at Buffalo Roam has his hands full with Tucker a 2 year old Aussie. The look of "Who me?" Thanks for the submission.

z sdn nemo.jpg

Nemo enjoys his belly being scratched. Here he is patiently waiting for SDN. Nemo is 14# of pure wanna be wolf, Ok terrier-poodle mix.

z howard lance the cat.jpg
Howard wanted us to meet his magnificent cat Lance. Nice to meet ya Lance.

z sky-die-ver.jpg

sky-die-ver sent in this single photo with 2 dogs. The top dog is Toby. The bottom photo is of Maxine. Toby recently passed away and is missed dearly. Sorry to hear of your loss.

z shain s.jpg
Last but not least are these 2- 13 year old cats adopted by ShainS. Meet Jamocha & Jamaica. They were adopted together approximately 10 years ago. Per ShainS they had to undergo quite the interview to adopt these critters.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing some time with us this afternoon. Pet/animal tips, news and your photos can be submitted to us at petmorons at gee mail dot com.

1 Our new home is century-old, renovated church. Not completely renovated, for example, what used to be the sound room is still pretty much as it was when the building was still a church. (c. 1990) and has carpeting running floor to ceiling.

Our cats have discovered they can scale these walls of carpet, which is funny as hell. I just got to catch them with my phone sometime to get pics.

3 Glad to see El Gato pictured with great company. Smokey is celebrating his 19th year and still climbing trees. He also loves to sit on the boat ramp and watch for tiny fry to get within claw range.

4 Oh my goodness, the cuteness! Murphy looks just like my golden at that age. He is almost three years old now and still a damn rascal.

10 The toy red poodles look like little stuffed animals. They're so adorable! Can I have one?

11 I took Sophie to the K9 Fun Zone, an indoor dog park, where she can chase a squeaky ball without any other dogs around, and do stuff with the agility equipment, if a squeaky ball is waved in her face.

Once I thought she was food-motivated, and she is somewhat, but if you want the dog to go into a tunnel, just throw a squeaky ball in first.

Girlie is completely exhausted.

19 Does anyone know what the dog breed was in the video in last week's thread. To recap - it ran into the soccer stadium during a game in Mexico City. Here's the video again:
https://youtu.be/cpkwSIXcHUA

The mexican news says a mutt "criollo". This dog looks exactly like mine except she's a girl. I always figured some random lab-mix. I got her at the pound 13 years ago thinking she was a juvi. full lab but shes always been the small sleek 40lb dog.

The too short ears, the yellowish-white color of the coat, even the way the dog jumps and runs is exactly like mine.

22 Yay! Pet thread!

I've got a long story about our first cats, but I'll wait a bit to post it - because, long.

Tucker has a great "who, me?" look. What was that torn up? Looks like, maybe, a pound of butter?

The only time our cats get into the kitchen trash is to pull out a butter wrapper. Oh, yeah, or the wrapper from bacon. We have to be careful not to leave the trash can undumped after cooking bacon!

38 Our cats want to eat all the time. The explanation for that was given in a great.cute video posted in one of the overnight threads-"Why do cats act so weirdly?"
The biggest cat I have ever seen was at a Bed and Breakfast in VA. That cat had to be 25 lbs? It was so big it was scary (think of the cat version of "Trigglypuff" but much pleasanter in personality) and the owner of the B&B has trained it to use the toilet and use that instead of a litter box or at least for poop..

I want to say that's cool, but that's not right. That seems weird. Who would want to share a bathroom with a cat? I guess it saves the work of having to deal with a litter box, but still.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at May 07, 2016 03:13 PM (qCMvj)

50 Thanks for posting our red poodles photo. They were about 7 weeks old when we took that. Strudel the Poodle on the right kept those puppy proportions his whole life. And more than one person mistook him for a stuffed toy until he gave them a lick. It's hard to tell, but Schnitzel, on the far left, was curled up in the basket and his sister was standing on him. He was always much bigger than his litter mates, almost ten pounds, so we called him Mega-Puppy. They had long, healthy lives and we do miss them. Unfortunately, the breeder we got them from has passed on so we can't get more pups from that line.

==============================================

When we adopted our Greyhound from the track, she had no idea what stairs were. She had spent all 4 years of her life in a racing kennel. When we got her home, we realized that she could not get up the stairs. No clue. My daughter's husband (boyfriend at the time) had to pick her up and carry her up the stairs. If you've ever seen a Greyhound's legs, you realize that it was like carrying a giraffe. This went on for weeks, several times a day when she had to go potty. Eventually she caught on from watching our Golden Retriever. The first time she went down on her own, she totally flew over the last three steps. She was quivering, she was so afraid.

She kinda saved the day when the neighbor kids were throwing rocks at my horses and she went out and showed them the house was not in fact empty, though all the cars were gone. Those kids have been extra nice to me since then...

I took some photography so i know a good composition and can frame a nice pic, but my worst problem is if they notice i am doing something I get mobbed! then the next thing i know i have this huge group of noses in frame and blurry whiskers and eyes and they go to head-butting my hands, and that is no good for a decent image.

105 We've had so many pets here at the farm in the past 20 years, it's hard to keep track of 'em, much less remember which I've written about for the pet thread.

But I know I haven't told the story of the Original 7. Forgive the tl;dr, but it's seven cats' tails, after all.

By twists of fate, our family started in Chicago. We never had pets in the city. Should've at least had a cat, I think now, but we had an apartment - I just couldn't see having a pet without the freedom of a big yard. Kids asked for a dog, but I knew who would've been out walking that dog in knee-deep blizzard, picking up poop in a baggie, and it wouldn't've been them.

Finally, though, Fate smiled upon us and we moved to rural Oklahoma - moved back, for Milady and me, moved from their home town for the kidlets.

One year and a few days after we moved back, suddenly: kittens. We had two mama barn cats that had litters days apart, one litter of four cats, one of three. We ended up keeping all seven, the beginning of our Too Many Cats days.

The trio was: a wonderful gray-brindle male the kids named Zeus; his similarly-stripey but almost greenish-seeming sister, Aquata; and the runt of the litter, a stripey orange girl that the kids' cousin got to name - Tigger. (By these names you can tell the difference between our kids' home-schooling in classics and the public-schooled cousin.)

The quartet was: a mostly-black calico, Athena; a medium-mixed calico, Patches; a mostly-white calico, Diana; and a gentle yellow cat our daughter especially claimed, and named Caramel.

Diana, when still mostly a kitten, got her neck broken jumping into a slamming car door. That was the first time I held a creature in my arms and watched as the light went out in its eyes.

One son had a special attachment to that white kitten who his brother accidentally slammed the car door on, and, later on, was especially fond of the all-white kitten of the triplets, I wrote about last week,* that his sister accidentally stepped on and killed. Heartbroke twice, that poor boy, and while he never talked about it, probably found it a bit hard to forgive his siblings, even knowing accidents happen.

* http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=363043#c25196465

Aquata was the next to go, when still pretty young, like a teenager. I vividly remember driving up to the house, and Milady meeting me, her face a look of horror, crying, "I think Aquata is dying!" We rushed to the back, in time to see her take her last few, coughing breaths, and she expired. She was such a great cat - when you held her, she hugged you like a monkey.

Tigger got the nickname of The Singing Kitty after chomping on some garlic (we think) and meyowling for quite a while. Longest-lived of all of the Original 7, finally just expired one day.

Caramel disappeared for weeks, and came back with a broken leg - I wrote about her on an open thread back in December.* Actually got her leg fixed!

IIRC, Zeus, Athena, Patches, and Caramel all just disappeared during some of the rough days for our family - maybe because we weren't at home as much for them, maybe because we didn't yet have a free-roaming dog to ward off the predators. Anyway, lots of sadness about all that.

They're all so long gone now that the generation of cats we had after them is all gone now. Miss each one of them so much. But I'll always treasure the days when our life in the country was new, the kids were young, and we had our seven kitties.

I feel the same about Spooky, Spectre, Nudie, Muniere, Emmy, and Ditto. each loss hurt me so much i stated collecting up the kittens i could and getting them to friends or rescues and finally bringing them into the house. Now the last of them is in the house, Lulu, mother of all cats. She was Spooky and Dittos sister. I have four of her kids in the house and only Bad Black Kitty is outside because he likes it and i would not want to keep him prisoner. Lulu however likes litterboxes, loves a soft bed, and adores being brushed. She was so wild when she was young but has decided to put aside her wild ways and retire from feral living to be a housepet.

Mindful you must have done a hell of a job raising that kid. I am gonna be honest with you, if my sisters had killed no one but both of my favorite kittens, i would have hated them FOREVER, even if only secretly. We would have never been friends as grown ups. You've got a beautiful doggie there, and I'm glad she found a good home!

122 Gotcha, Dave.
I got my Tucker a few months after my ex got tired of him. He was a Christmas gift. Her kids named him. I wanted to go with Irving.

123 Teaching a pup to go up stairs can be a challenge. One of ours was in no hurry to learn so I would give him a boost to encourage him to scramble onto the next step. The problem was he thought my hand was the right size and comfortably warm. He just settled his puppy butt in my palm, placed his front paws on the step and enjoyed the view. It took about a week for him to figure out my hand wasn't an ottoman there for his relaxation.

125 Just recalled, when I was a kid we had bunk beds. We had a bird dog mix that could jump up to the top bed and did so often. We had another mixed breed dog that could not jump like that but he wanted to be up there too so he taught himself to scramble up the ladder instead.

128 My dog is in the doghouse with me right now because he acts as though he is guarding Fort Knox when I am alone in the house. A sweet neighbor came over and cut the grass because my two lawnmowers are currently out of commission. He knocked out the patio screen door and cornered the poor guy. I really hate that posturing and wild growling.

130 Is it too late to post to the pet thread, I wonder?

I awoke today realizing I'd made a terrible mistake in my post about our family's Original 7 cats, and I just want to make a correction for the record.

I wrote, "One son had a special attachment to that white kitten who his brother accidentally slammed the car door on, and, later on, was especially fond of the all-white kitten of the triplets, I wrote about last week,* that his sister accidentally stepped on and killed."

The later cat to which he was so attached was the all-white one, but that cat was not the one that was stepped on, but rather the one that I had to scrape off the highway. Still hard for him, but not both instances a sibling's fault.
