This is rich. ICE Director admits 'sanctuary' policies put agents at risk. Then when she's asked if these 'sanctuary' policies also pose a risk to the public, she dodges the question. Um, if it is riskier for your agents, it's bound to be riskier for the public.

Hacking Companies

Fascinating read. Why you should fear this man.

The Blackwater of surveillance, the Hacking Team is among the world's few dozen private contractors feeding a clandestine, multibillion-dollar industry that arms the world's law enforcement and intelligence agencies with spyware. Comprised of around 40 engineers and salespeople who peddle its goods to more than 40 nations, the Hacking Team epitomizes what Reporters Without Borders, the international anti-censorship group, dubs the "era of digital mercenaries."

Yeesh. SSA sent out millions of correspondence using full Social Security Numbers.

Sixty-six percent of the 352 million notices the agency sent out last year contained Americans' full Social Security Numbers, and the government said it has no idea how many never made it to the correct address.

Target

Target's stock down 5%, brand damaged, by public rebuke to pro-transgender bathroom rules. Funny thing is, they are hurting their business for so few folkswho up until recently were using bathrooms just fine.

8 So, I'm going to move my prayer request for our son to here, since I was on the chess thread (desperation!) and was treated very kindly.

Son has decided to move from the hell that is his hood, effective June 1.

He revealed to me today, that all the night-long gunfire and killings, have made him relive on a nightly basis, Helmand Province, including providing first aid to a shot up yute until the po-po and amberlamps arrived. And he credits his sweet pit mix pup, Harley, with kissing him and waking him up and calming him when that shit happens.

Anyhow, he's found an apartment not far from his university, and it's outside the city and SAFE.

So, prayers, please, that he makes it safely in Savannastan until June 1.

You have no idea. I realized today, that for the past year and a half, I've been nearly as stressed about where he lives than I was the seven months he was in Helmand Province. Every single day, I pick up the paper, and his neighborhood is like a war zone. To hear him tell me today, that he wakes up and has flashbacks, and his dog calms him, was awful.

So- I have a nice flowerbed outside my kitchen window, in front of the fence. I'm doing some dishes this afternoon and look up to see an anole on the middle stringer- not at all unusual, as we have a ton of them.

But- this one has another one's head in his MOUTH and is smacking him against the fence, until he loses his balance and they both fall off. Thrashing about in the bulbs ensues.

Wiki to find that they are very territorial, and do this sort of thing all the time.

It was like tee-tiny Jurassic Park out there. So creepy...

45 Since I got Willowed on the last thread, I will be gauche and repost what I posted on the last thread, which would have got me emBarreled, had I not been quick on the draw, and the thread moving slow. Fixed the tag.

And in useless news here at Peon Manor, I spent more time today futzing with a little Honda 80 cc dirty bike motor salvaged from the dump (read: Free!). I had got the exhaust valve out of it last night, and went to polish it up today. Uh-oh! It was badly bent, and wobbled fiercely when I spun it in the lathe. Having nothing to lose, I kept tapping it with a hammer, until the runout was too small to see clearly. Then I coated it with valve grinding compound, chucked the end of the stem in my cordless drill, and pulled on the drill while it spun, to lap the seat and valve together. That's a major no-no, but I didn't have a working rubber suction cup tool to do the proper oscillating lap technique. Nevertheless, I got contact between the valve and seat all the way around, and called it good. Did a quick lap on the intake valve, too, although it wasn't warped.

Put the engine back together, clamped it into the big vise on the outside workbench, sprayed a shot of ether into the carb, and worked the kickstarter by hand. Zoom-zoom! It started right up, and idled for a good quarter-minute on the fuel I'd put into the carb bowl yesterday while vainly trying to start it. It didn't quit on its own, I had to shut it down by unplugging the magneto.

So I am pleased as punch.

52 Launching unladen B-25s off the Ranger, with a couple extra hundred feet of runway and ten extra knots of headwind must have made it a lot less stressful for the pilots.

Although I suspect from the pilot's point of view, losing one of the few surviving airworthy Mitchells on the anniversary of the raid would be far worse than ditching your aircraft in wartime.

Ah. Yeah, when it gets to that point, the online enjoyment drops considerably. There's a whole bunch of things that they do to cheat. Aimbotting is a major one. It was a problem back in the day. so much so I got slated as a cheat. But, I practised with the assault rifle so that I could use it like a semi auto (it was setup as auto only, but practice with the mouse could get the first round to work like a k9. Others didn't believe that it was possible to "snipe" with it. "X-ray vision" was also a common cheat. Invulnerability seems pretty blatant. Is there any blocks planned for the cheats?

It stood for several years, and even survived the massive snows of winter 2014-2015, but it began to lean so I took it down last week, salvaged the lumber I could, bought some sturdier posts, some real roofing nails, and some real deck screws to hold it together.

Well, Target isn't losing my business, because I all but never shopped there. Once or twice in my life. But now I will consciously avoid them.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 30, 2016 10:40 PM (+y3Tj)

78 @63 From the Target story: "Despite the widespread opposition, disputes at Target stores will be rare because transgenders comprise only about 0.03 percent of the population. That's only about one in every 2,400 people, according to a study of the 2010 census data."

How many unique customer visits does a large department store get every day? I'm willing to bet it is several thousand each day. In which case, odds favor there being about one tranny per day, per store.

Problem is, it's not really the "gender-confused" that people are worried about.

81 63. I'm sure Target had no problems when trannys who could pass did so and the rest used the private bathrooms that every Target has.

Announcing their stupid policy has just given the green light to every pervert to declare him or herself trans-gender to find out if that is all it takes to barge into wrong bathroom to make people uncomfortable on purpose and have no fear of consequences. That is why I'm done shopping at Target.

Pater familias is adjusting well to his little vacation at the inpatient rehab center, especially since they got him in a wheelchair so he could see something other than four walls! He's had a lot of isolation lately and changes of scenery and seeing other people around is doing him some good mentally I think. It's a problem I've wrestled with for some time for him, hopefully I can come up with better ideas after he gets sorted out.

Also, I'm more relaxed and less frenzied than I've been in weeks.

I have to say that one of my favorite Heston movies is Khartoum. I never would have thought Heston as a Brit would go over but he did a great job and it was an excellent movie. Of course, Olivier would have to stand trial, these days, for "crimes against humanity" for his face-painted portrayal of the crazy arab who thought he was the Mahdi.

ugh. It's not 5.8%, it's 4.5% since April 19th, the day the policy was announced. And also since April 19th, Walmart is down 4%, Cisco is down 3% and Whole Foods is down 5%. The entire big box retail sector is down in the 3-5% range since April 19th.

If Target were down 5% and Walmart were up 5%, then yeah you could say the bathrooms are having an effect. But when Target's stock price is doing what every other retailer is doing, you can't say that.

Posted by: junior at April 30, 2016 10:41 PM (fgd5X)

Precisely.

Was at the doctor's office with my daughter, and had to use the restroom, and walked in with an elderly woman helping her elderly and obviously frail husband use the restroom in the ladies room. She apologized profusely, and said that there were no "single" bathrooms, and she couldn't go in the men's room. I asked her if she needed help, waited til they left, and thought nothing of that. Nor would I, really, if an actual trans person used the restroom and wasn't bothering me.

But I have a problem with perverts or opportunist assaulters having access to me, my daughter, or other women. So yes, I am not going to Target. It's actually saving me money, because I tend to have no discipline when I go there.

97 Damn shame about that B-25 commemorative flight.

They did it far too soon. Should've waited till today, I think.

They took off unladed. Pity. Better if they took off with a full load of incindiaries and cluster bombs.

They didn't have a target. The protests outside the Trump rallies were a target rich environment. And I say that as very much a Ted Cruz voter.

Hopefully, next time, we'll have a much more memorable commemorative flight, and once again demonstrate the still-rich capabilities of the U.S. Navy, in conjunction with the USAAF and the Mitchell Bomber.

And if you Moron's haven't read Gen. Doolitle's wiki and various biographies, you've been missing one hell of a bunch of good reading.

Eldest Kidlet has started a YouTube channel for that with a game called Transistor as well as some sort of ShadowRun on-line game she plays with Son. I'm a terrible mother and haven't watched any of her episodes so far, but Middlest Kidlet says she thinks they're pretty good. EK isn't here right now, but I'll ask her if she's okay with me sharing the channel name with the Horde.

213 Wow, AmeriDan, that's a heapin' helpin' of cinematic brushes with greatness.

My best was sitting having my cafe au lait and beignets at the Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, next table over was James Spader doing a scene for "Storyville".

Of course I was completely off camera but really right next to him. He kept sneezing from the powdered sugar on the beignets, until someone thought to spray water mist on them. Some woman - I assume the female interest in the movie - walked up and dropped a script on his table, then walked away with only a few words spoken. A few extras, including one of the horse-drawn carriages pulling by on the street in front of us.

Never saw the movie, don't know if the scene is in it. I left to catch my plane after an hour, they still weren't done.

The vasytmajority of boycotts don't work. On any given day every major corporation is under a boycott from one group or another. It all washes out in the end. Posted by: rhomboid at May 01, 2016 12:32 AM

No, no objection, just no interest. I'll tell ya why.

Despite being raised in a rural IL farm family was never raised around guns.

Found out the reason why. When my Grandad was a kid on the farm I later farmed they were having cattle stolen. So Grt Granddad rigged up an alarm system, when the barn door was opened an alarm went off in the house.

It went off one night, my 14 yo Granddad went out w/ his Dad and he shot the rustler. Guy was caught as a trail of blood lead to his house.

He lost his leg, I think was convicted, but Grandad never got over that and never raised his kids w/ any guns around, tho he always kept a shotgun for his own use.

274 #189 - It was this guy, who is gay but doesn't much like the new policy, who went into a target (dressed as a normal man) and up to the service counter, where he explained he would be more comfortable in the ladies' room, and could he just go in there. The guy behind the counter laughs, and says let me get this other person for you to talk to.

So the other man tells him yes, he can go in. The guy asks, well what if women object. The manager or whoever it was says, well we will talk to them about it. The guy leaves without going in the ladies' room.

There's also another couple videos that I *think* is the same guy, where they are asking him to leave the store and telling him he can't film in there. (Not sure it is the same guy, though it seems to be).

I guess this got the guy much more attention than he thought it would, as the video was later removed.

I liked the part where if I objected to a man in the ladies' room, they would "talk to me" about it and set me straight on it. That's what I love about this whole thing. Guys setting me straight on what I can object to and what I can't.

300 Cooth is correct, chiles have been engineered for years now (like most other valuable veggies and fruits) for various reasons. I believe when jalapeno use/acceptance spread in the US, in the 80s, a down-bred (in terms of capsaicin content) version was the one mostly in distribution. Much milder than you'd get at a store or in a restaurant in Mexico.

And chiles freely cross-pollinate as well. So same variety, same field, can have divergent characteristics including capsaicin levels.

It was just like the gigantic, urgent, persistent, culture-defining demand that the Confederate flag be treated like the Nazi flag is in Germany today. Which was non-existent.

Let's take a trip down memory lane....I spent far too much of my youth in the town of Newhall, California.....where, to channel Sam Kinison...."Y'see here? Y'see what this is? *snicker* This is SAND. NOTHING grows here -- nothing's GONNA grow here. It's SAND. You need to pack your shit, make one trip, and GO WHERE THE MOIST IS!"

Which I pretty much did.

The trade pidjin was 20% French, 20% English, 20% one tribe, 20% another tribe, and 20% other. It originally formed for trade, but then all the indigenous peoples got munged into the same reservation, and it began to be taught to children as a language of its own. I'm oversimplifying, but it was a reasonably interesting piece -- Global Warming rated only a couple of sentences.

371 Santa Clara had a city-wide garage sale today. It has had one in August for a while, but they decided to branch out and hold another at the end of April. As might be expected from the first year of a tradition, it was a bit spotty. The fiancee and I bopped around for a bit and got a few bargains. I got an inert gas regulator for a buck. Fiancee got a piece of large luggage for $3 to replace the nearly-destroyed one we bought some years back in Slough, England for 35 pounds -- which we had to buy because our American luggage had gotten caught against a wheel during SF -> Heathrow and was worn through.

I got a couple of laptop-sized bags for $3 each -- they come in handy for a lot of things. An unused flatscreen support arm for $4. The fiancee got a couple of books, a pair of shorts for a young girl with spangles (fiancee attended a seminar at Maker Faire for making old pants/shorts into handbags -- but, yeah, I was nervous driving around with those in my car) some Disney artwork stamped by Sothebys, and an extendable sunshade, and some cork artwork.

After a quick stop at home, we went off to a county park to hike a loop of about 2.5 miles with a 600' height gain in the middle.

376 Now I get to find out if I'm crazy or not in how I valued my turn of the century video gaming collection. I really needed to cut down on the bulk of material possessions and so much of this stuff is available in enhanced remakes or under emulation. Though there are some surprising gaps, such as much of the GameCube library, despite the current Nintendo box being fully capable of playing all of it with minimal software needed for the small hardware differences.

It's just, I see all of these ads for lesser packages that don't seem to attract any buyers and it worries me that I may have missed the window for getting a good price. OTOH, I haven't seen a comparable bundle in any of the recent listings. Five consoles (PSone, PS2, GameCube, and two Xboxes for LAN play), extra controllers for each, numerous memory cards, lots of extra video cable for S-Video and Component (including a six-way S-video switch box and a four-way Component switch box, since if this lot sells I won't have anything that doesn't do HDMI or VGA), a bunch of extras like a 128 GB hard drive in the PS2 and HD Loader discs to use it with, and 332 games, many never opened and still in the shrink wrap.

So yeah, this is a pretty loaded package of the 2001-2001 generation. I've set the starting price at $1000 and the Buy It Now price at $1300, with local delivery only as it would be costly and painful to ship all of this.

I tried Craig's List, since it's free but didn't get so much as a single inquiry. Not even somebody asking if I'd go way down on the listed $1200 price. (The $1300 Buy It Now price on Ebay cover most of the fee they'll charge if it sells.) I try to tell myself that with all of the newer stuff I have, including many of those aforementioned remakes, I won't really miss this gear. Plus the cash would be a good starting point for car shopping as I've been without my own wheels since last summer.

I know part of it is I really don't want to give up yet more of my little museum but I feel a lot of trepidation over this for reasons I can't quite determine.

Silicon Valley is known for epic scavenging. There's a place called "Weird Stuff Warehouse" -- http://www.weirdstuff.com/sunnyvale/html/ -- that had a thing for sale for weeks while people guessed what it might be.....turns out it was the nose-cone for a Polaris missile. Whenever a production line is shutdown or a booming company goes bust, all the stuff is flushed into the recycling system before another month's rent need be paid for the building....and a lot of that stuff ends up in someone's garage. The DeAnza College flea market is well-known for having things like solder rework stations and QA microscopes show up.

I've got 20-year collections of Keyboard Magazine and Guitar Player that I can't sell for what they charge for a single back-issue.

I've been where you were and I've taken the diplomatic approach almost every time. I've worked as a bartender, ("beertender", no mixed drinks), Karaoke DJ/Emcee, Bare-As-You-Dare Emcee, and Doorman/Bouncer.

Getting away from the Doorman/Bouncer jobs were the best things that could have happened because I was applying sarcastic comedy to pissed-off idiots.

That works much better onstage than it does at the door. You don't have the crowd behind you, (rhetorically), at the door.

-You also don't get prosecuted for defending yourself. *side-note* ...yeah.

As an onstage presence, you get to ask a belligerent heckler where he is from and if he is enjoying himself.

Then the set-up...

Slap: "What's your favorite part of your on body, amigo?"

Idiot: "My dick!" (always)

Slap: "I'm sorry. That's incorrect. It is your right hand. ...your right hand. Had you answered that correctly, you would have won a *drink*, *sponsor's name sandwich*, and a *local cab company* ride home.

-Thanks for playing, Jackass!

You do that when you know that the idiot's buddies are all trying to shut him up.

385 I keep trying - or, at least, wanting - to shift off late-nights and into early-mornings. Actually did it ... once ... this week. But Life & Co. keep conspiring to keep me up late.

Finally home, now, at least; late even by the Central Standard Time clock.

Now, if y'all will cooperate by not saying anything interesting, I can give up on this thread soon and go to bed.

392 Damn, I cannot believe it's well into 2016 and most configurations of small desktop PCs from the big brands cannot be ordered with an SSD.

It's like the PC industry WANTS to fail. The single best all around improvement you make to a PC and the marketing at the big brands are still terrified over how to sell it, because they've so long depended on just pushing bigger numbers for smaller prices and not actual performance and quality of experience.

Client won't let me take away his laptop long enough to fix it properly and would rather I get him a new machine. He doesn't actually go anywhere with the laptop, so a small desktop with a big screen should be an improvement but getting such a model that meets my standards is proving surprisingly hard. I can build him a nice ITX system but it won't be price competitive, even with most of the labor essentially given for free. (I don't mind that too much as it's fun for me.)

The only upside is I don't have to touch the disgusting laptop. Apparently he spends his days on finance sites while business channels play on the TV, never so much as turning his head to not sneeze on the screen or occasionally applied a moistened (!) paper towel. It's so bad I thought the site he was on had a strange watermark background but it was just all of the gunk on the screen.

393 Slapweasel: G'Night, mindful.

What? Wait! No, you were supposed to respond by saying interesting things and keeping me up all night!

Fine, then, we'll just do it that way. (Remind me some time to tell the story about my neighbor where that's the punch line, sort-of.)

Good night, Gracies, and I mean it from the bottom of my beverage mug.

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.

394 Tonight, we had dinner with one of the fiancee's ex-minions (ex- because she's been laid-off yesterday). A couple of months ago, he'd had a coworker approach the fiancee over a medical emergency, had the fiancee dump everything to investigate -- which resulted in a 911 call, ambulance ride, and some time in the hospital....during which, the fiancee took the time to visit (while many of his "work-buddies" didn't).

He's being laid-off next Friday.

It was an interesting discussion in a noisy place. He learned the name of the coworker who had actually saved his life, for instance.

Perhaps I'll visit you all again when I make an All Star Game baseball post when Ace needs a break.

When I get to a thread late and have to cut my responses for being untimely, I get out of the habit of sayiing goodnight.

397 All too often in the past, I signed off and found myself awake and bored, looking to see if the thread was still going. So I've gotten in the habit of just fading out rather than making a formal announcement.

406 Not sure why flooding is such a problem in Texas. What's the point of having all these engineers and public works projects if they cant control it? People are asleep in their homes and they get swept away? Then again, a hellish amount of rain fell within a very short period of time. Still, too much flooding in Texas!
