I fill your pain. Local tap water has a light brown haze to it. The city held a bond election in order to raise money to get the water pipes fixed but it was voted down. So, we still have our lovely brown-ish tap water.

I did, and enjoyed more than I can convey. Having been in the epicenter of chi-chi oneupmanship, it gave me one that lasted more than four hours.

I disassembled the wheel-less one, and put its little motor in the vise on the outside workbench, and tried to start it. Magneto was making a spark OK, but aside from a few burps, it would not fire. Determined that the exhaust valve was leaking pretty badly, and hence no compression. So I pulled the head, and got the exhaust valve out. Black spots all over the sealing face. A regrind is indicated.
My drill press made an awesome valve spring compressor for this little head. Slicker than snot on a doorknob.

I groomed for my mom starting when I was in kindergarten and started playing when I was twelve. Heh. ISWYDT. I just put a deep socket on the drill press table to support the head of the valve, and placed a pair of small 1/4" drive sockets on the retainer, and used the feed handle to run the chuck down on them, and depress the retainer, and then fished the keepers out. I will make a proper two-legged "pusher" to do the intake valve, and to do the reassembly, because keeping all those small parts in the right place, under spring pressure, is tricky.

Turned out to be over 500 CD's, several sets of those subscription series plus a lot of individual buys. My friend's interests and mine were not identical -- and we used to joke around like that -- but, overlapped considerably, and hey, matched sets.

The no-hitter continued through the 9th inning and the Marlins were one out away from a no-hitter when the Marlins closer gave up a hit - and then another and another. And then the score was 3-6 with bases loaded. And damn, I was praying hard for a walk-off grand slam - but shit, the batter struck out and that was it. Damn - but still, what a great inning.
That's what people who complain of baseball's slowness don't get - it's slow until it's not - and then it becomes unbearably exciting because the suspense can go on for minute and after, and it's not over until the last out is recorded.

The father of one of my best childhood friends managed an equestrian club that included polo grounds. They lived adjacent to the place so I occasionally saw practices. I was impressed.
But, like most people, I think of it as a sport for rich people only. I'm glad to hear there is a wider pool of players. (Er, not swimming pool!)

Copying - a few minutes a disk. But it only has to be done once and then you're all set and can copy/transfer the files as you see fit.
Converting those files from wavs to flac - not long and most media players will do it while you are off doing something else.
I converted all of my CDs to mp3 files years ago. Back then, memory was too expensive to save the full wavs or even the half size flac files. Nowadays memory is so cheap that you can just save full CDs in their original waves for almost nothing. Many media players won't play the wavs, though. A lot will play flacs and all will play mp3s. But converting files to those formats is easy and not something you ahve to actively sita round doing. The programs will run through huge lists of songs on their own.

The songs were bequeathed. The CDs are just the medium. I don't see anything wrong with getting the music files. If I left CDs to a friend I would be very happy to have them take the music and get rid of the CDs.
Also, you have to copy the files to the computer, to begin with, because if you really want to be able to listen to the stuff you need to convert the files and put them on SD cards to play in your mp3 player.

I recall Vietnam Airlines in the 90s, domestic flights (Aussie pilot in left seat, new Airbuses). Flight attendants were almost all female, wore ao dais. Stunning. Just put those gorgeous girls in the photos in that article in the form-fitting ao dai, not hard to imagine.
Vietnam. Was a feast for the eyes, and the palate. Was visiting a gf there, so, well, window shopping only. But wow. Check out those photos, a pretty good hint at what the country has to offer.

They probably wouldn't tell you, even if you had asked. Had that happen to me last year when a debit card I had on a U.S.-based bank was "compromised". If I had known which retailer was the site of the breach, I might have been able to contribute information that could lead to the perp. CDs are nothing but files. Once you copy the files there's nothing on the CD that you don't have. This isn't like taping a record or something. You have the file then what's left on the CD is of no extra use to you. You have a perfect copy - and you have it in a much more accessible and manipulable state.
It's always preferable to have files on a hard drive rather than on a CD.
Now, one can keep the CDs for more permanent backup but there are better and cheaper ways to keep off-line backups. CDs are far too bulky to really keep around these days. Offline backups are much better done on DVDs or Blurays, though a few copies on hard drives are much cheaper and easier.
But the first thing to do with any CD is to put the files on your drive so that you can work with them, move them, copy them and use them as you will really want to.

From what I read, if a ladyboy gets you off, you're expected to return the favor and get them off. Well, I don't think you have to, uh, go all the way so to speak, but you do have to give them a little attention in return.

Back in the olden days, fleas and mosquitoes would have had to type a letter out, sign it, fold it, put it in an envelope, smack a stamp on it, and haul it to the post office.

Just about anything will let you burn perfect copies of standard CD's. Grab an ISO image, burn as many as you want.

I know a guy, stomp "jass" pianist, who got a radio station holding company's entire library, going back to the 30's, for free, by being there (and, knowing a guy, buy mostly...). He rents a couple of storage units to keep them all in -- promo singles, of course, but also LP's, reel tapes, and 16 RPM "miracle of transcription" programs. We all like to BS about stuff being our retirement plan, but he has some sales to prove it. The station was moving its studio, and its actual business plan was to throw it all away. No thought given to sales, or even the write-off of a library donation. You don't argue popular music with this guy. He has documentation.

As I said earlier today, I do feel blessed that I still get to listen to Bob Uecker calling Brewers games. The man is a treasure and still witty and sharp although he's like 129 years old. ( He has to rest every few innings or so.)

I'd bet most will be only worth pennies, but there could be a few that have been out-of-print too long and that contain classic performances, so give it a shot.
I wish I had held onto some of my original CD purchases, or purchased second copies to keep in collectible condition. One of them, a gold CD edition in a special aluminum box of Cream's Wheels of Fire, came out in 1993, and I bought it literally the first month it came out for I believe about $60. It's now worth about 10 times that much if it's never left the shrinkwrap.

You shouldn't have any problems copying the wav files off of CDs. I don't use Windows so I don't know what the story is with it but most media players will rip CDs for you. I use linux so I just copy the files directly from the CD.

I make mp3s to listen to in my mp3 player (because it won't handle too many formats and its memory is limited to a 32GB card) but for my computer I keep the old wavs. They used to be prohibitively large but with the prices of hard drives now down around 5 cents/GB you can save the full wavs without any problem. Nowadays, since memory is so cheap people are starting to want much better resolution on their music files than the old CD wavs allowed.

I am sure that some of the CD's referenced by Stringer are limited pressings, and quite valuable intrinsically. It's all very well to make copies to play for enjoyment, but the originals should be retained simply because they are originals.

OK, that's it -- you get a retelling of The Bedbug Letter.
Many years ago -- thinking the 1930s -- travelling across country was done in Pullman Coaches......essentially hotel rooms in rail cars. You'd fold the seat out into a bed, and sleep while the train took you from Dallas to Albuquerque. One intrepid salesman, who had logged a large number of miles, had an experience that inspired him to write to the President of the Pullman Coach Company.
It seems that he had been attacked by bedbugs during a recent trip, and had great personal pain and expense thereby, including disinfection of his belongings.
He actually received a hand-signed letter from the President assuring him that his concerns were duly noted, management was shocked and appalled, not only that car -- but the entire train of cars -- had been pulled out of service for extensive disinfection, memos had been distributed throughout the ranks to focus attention on this potential issue and guard against further episodes, customer service auditors were on-site attempting to see what flaw in procedures might have allowed this ghastly event to occur, and the employees in charge of making this car ready prior to his journey were being interviewed closely as to their continued employment.
And, paperclipped to this, was a handwritten note that said, "Send this SOB the bedbug letter."

CDs are only 700 MB so that's the biggest the total sizes of the songs can be. Figure 12 songs and you have a limit of a 60MB average size per song. This used to be considered too huge to bother with saving on disk. MP3s were made to reduce this 60MB file to around 6MB, but these days you can save the whole 60MB song easily and have tons of room to spare. But, if you want to save some space you can convert the original wavs to flac, which is a lossless compression and you get about a 50% size reduction along with the fact that "most" players will read flac format.

Admit I need this info, I'd like to get a Fiio portable player and most models from what I can tell support FLAC, WAV... but not MP3.
I have wondered if I should start slowly converting my collection, it's all MP3s and I keep hearing that everything else sounds better now.

You can convert mp3 to better formats so that you can play your files in that player but you know that you will still get a degraded copy on that conversion. Once you've downconverted to mp3 a lot of sound has been lost.
Personally, I have no problem with mp3 versions ... but I can hear the differences from the original wavs. Luckily, I'm not bothered by that and I pick up new copies of songs as I can. Heck, I get a lot of my music from youtube, these days, and I can live with that sound quality. It's awesome, though, to suddenly find 12 different live versions of a favorite song!

So one group of zanies looked up the genus and species and found that another name for the mud fowl is American Coot. They now call themselves the Coots, and also refer to the team by that name. There is some ill humor involved.

My home town in Pennsylvania used to have a minor league baseball team named the Lancaster Red Roses; their archrival was the York (Pa.) White Roses (yes, the two cities were named for their English counterparts). The two teams are now the Lancaster Barnstormers and the York Revolution. They still have an annual "War of the Roses" game, though, after which the losing team has to plant a rose bush in the winning team's color in the winner's ball park. So far, Lancaster is ahead 5-4.
I suppose the historical precedent (the actual Wars of the Roses were really bloody, even for the late medieval period) takes away some of the ghey overtones of naming baseball teams after flowers.

She got to do some cool things there -- partially reacting to difficult circumstances. It's left her with more in her toolbox and less panic for any occasion. The "merger, then layoff of those people whose success made the company an attractive merger target" is old news -- happens around here all the time.
We've both got attractive portfolios of skills -- we just need to relocate into a state that is not one of the bottom 3 in the US for business formation/growth (the other two being Illinois and NY).

I've been to Nashville, sniffing around, for just this purpose. What did I miss? (and, BTW, the underlying idea has always been to enjoy the benefits of the underlying area (e.g. hospitals, airports, concerts), but live outside the city limits....so "Nashville" is more Murfreesboro or Gallatin-ish).

I know a few people from there, and they are quick to tell anyone who starts with the "I hate Memphis, I wished I lived in Nashville" stuff that Nashville (city) is turning hard into what Memphis is.
Crime and gang bangin' is on the rise in both cities. The two missed out on the organized gang craze at the turn of the century, but are rapidly catching up.
As far as suburbs, I'd put Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, Lakeland, etc. up against any of Nashville's. Although, if I had to choose a recommendation between the two, I would go for Nashville (metro).

My aunt lives in Karns, TN (outside of Knoxville) -- and she went through the same questions some years ago. She lived within biking distance of Disneyland and traveled the country in an RV to find her place -- I think she done good for when she did it. Chattanooga has an alarming number of tornadoes, which is somewhat balanced by a municipal internet that is better than Silicon Valley residential. I like that both have hills -- these create nice microclimates and recreational opportunities.
Unfortunately, for the fiancee, proximity to my relatives is not necessarily a positive. In addition, she's lived a good part of her life in the NYC and Silicon Valley cultural fields and has absorbed some unfortunate biases -- accepting the "hicks h8 LGBTVRSTUV" bullshit regarding the NC "stop the molester on the Charlotte City Council" law, for instance. I believe I have a better chance of a quicker relocation to the Piedmont/Triad area of NC -- which similarly offers some hills, as well as ready access to medical facilities and cultural events.

Had a cute young female accounting clerk who had a bad congenital heart-valve problem that she spent her teens denying. When she was in her 20s, it was judged inoperable. [We found most of this out after the fact.] I was in a meeting in our conference room, and my #2 came in and said that the clerk was having problems and insisting that we not call 911. I excused myself, went to accounting, and observed her spasming while holding her desk for balance with a skin color that matched her blue denim jeans. Every so often, like now, I think of her -- she was a great kid and a good accountant, carrying a congenital doom within her that her neglect may have turned fatal....and no matter what joy I might have from hearing from her and her family and kids.....I'm too chickenshit to try and track her down for fear I'd end up with only a headstone.

The fiancee has benefited from my Scots-Irish ways, redneck attitudes, and living in suburbia for decades.....and still fantasizes about living in a Manhattan apartment with a doorman. I think it's time we move out and deal with the deer and the skunks and 30-minute rides to hospitals because of distance, not traffic.

Then a small prefab log cabin with a big front porch.

Getting a "page can't be displayed" message and can't adjust settings on this computer. Maybe that's just as well, as my retirement plans won't be harshed.
A prefab cabin is what I "want" with no research into the actual type of structure I will get. Fire resistance will be a big part of the research, though, as it's a very rural area with volunteer fire fighting services that are a long way away.
I'm 51 and plan on working until at least 65 so I have a while to find the perfect dwelling. I will start at log cabins in general and work from there.
Would be nice to get it up sooner than later, so as to have my own room when visiting family in the years until retirement.

It's a plan. Worse comes to worse, I'll move back to my great-grandfather's brother's orchard and tobacco farm, in WV. We haven't worked it in living memory, leasing it out to the neighbors, but it has its own well inside the stone farmhouse.
Spent the first 5 or 6 years of my life there. i could do the same for the last of them, I supose.

Ah, familiar names. I went to tech school at NAS Memphis in Millington when the Navy's tech schools were still there. I thought of relocating to the Jackson area because it's as close to equidistant from Raleigh NC, Clarinda IA and Jacksonville FL as I could find. Not IN Jackson, mind, but nearby.

One of the houses I lived in while stationed in VA was a farmhouse that had a hand pump in the kitchen at the sink. It had been modernized of course, with running water and flush toilets and electricity and everything, but it was always nice knowing if the power went out I would have heat (wood stove) and water.
