Indiana Governor Mike Pence to Endorse Ted Cruz

Should help him, as Walker helped him.

Of course, Trump already locked down what may be an even more important endorsement in Indiana -- Hoosiers coach and freeform chair motion artist Bobby Knight.

11 Cruz has some ground to make up in Indiana. Frankly, I don't think any of these endorsements ever make a difference for any candidate. Most voters are smart enough to know Governor or Coach "X" is not candidate why.

At this point there are not a lot of undecideds left in te primary. The average margin right now is Trump +5.3 in the polls. I am also curious how the Fiorina gambit is going to play in Indiana.

Theory: Pence is in a fight for re-election. He cannot afford to upset any voters from either Cruz or Trump. He also cannot afford to upset any out-of-state power brokers or in-state power brokers.

To square the circle he announces for Cruz on Friday. He makes the power brokers wherever they are happy and he hopes that the Friday announcement will fly under the radar screen of the people voting and not alienate any of them.

My post was intended to be sarcastic. The TDS that sees Trump as Dracula, Frankenstein, Hitler, and Stalin all rolled into one and the depiction of Trump as the violent aggressor against Michelle Fields encourages this. The end of defeating Trump justifies any means to do so even if it costs us our heritage of a democratic republic. The real issues this election is whether anyone will have any faith or trust in the government and whether we turn the country over to the barbarians.

Cora Segal is an activist originally from Boston, who is currently studying at Hampshire College in Western MA. She was first introduced to social justice through youth-led community-based groups in the Boston area, such as the City School and Sub/Urban Justice. From here, she developed feminist, fat liberation, anti racist, and anti capitalist perspectives, which she believes all play an integral role in working towards collective liberation. As a fatty, she#8217;s very eager to see fat justice and all its intersections with gender, race, disability, queer/trans liberation, class, and anti capitalism, become part of radical movements. She currently organizes with various groups in the Pioneer Valley.

You talking about the '72 Olympics in Munich? The Soviets were actually given *three* chances to beat the U.S. If they had failed on the third, they would've been given another.

And Bobby Knight wasn't the coach. If he had been, he'd have run the Soviets back to Moscow with their tails between their legs.

You're making me feel old....
Bobby Knight was the extremely successful coach of the Indiana Hoosier's college basketball team for 29 years. He coached a couple of other college teams, including Army and the US Olympic team. He won numerous championships, and his players at the time had a very high graduation rate. He never had his program at Indiana sanctioned for issues by the NCAA.

He also had a volatile temper and famously threw a chair completely across the court after a call by a ref.

Someone upthread I believe posted a link to that.

He is beloved in Indiana.

Did I mention he's a fellow Ohio State grad????

I'm not saying any of these people are A-list celebrities. And I have never understood the mind that buys their underwear based on some "famous" person telling them to, much less using it as a basis for making a voting decision. But I don't see these as anything other than a win for conservatism. The latest indication that the administration is preparing to take in more than the 10,000 Syrians this year it already has committed to follows a March 30 high-level meeting on Syrian refugee admission in Geneva, Switzerland convened by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

At the meeting, attended by State Department officials, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi called for countries to pursue alternative avenues for refugees such as student and work visas, and expanded family reunification programs.

342 There's a link on the right to a Nate Silver 538 poll with the lede that Cruz has a 58% chance of winning IN. But when you look, that's the "polls-plus forecast" that uses an undisclosed formula for valuing endorsements. "Polls only" has Trump at 74% of winning. I mean WTF. They literally put their fingers on the scale and pulled down hard.

Meanwhile there's a new Rasmussen poll (referenced by a post upthread) that has Trump and Hillary at 38% each, with 24% saying they'll stay home. This is consistent with the thesis I've advanced that Hillary v Trump will be a turnout battle over negatives, a race that Trump can win because of how the electoral map lays out, as Hillary's support will pile up in already Deep Blue States and Trump wins a few Purple Swing States that Romney lost.

I actually fear Trump v. Biden, as Uncle Joe won't have as high negatives. In his talk where he compared Cruz to Lucifer, Boehner said that he believes that Hillary will lose the FBI Comey primary: "Don't be shocked ... if two weeks before the convention, here comes Joe Biden parachuting in and Barack Obama fanning the flames to make it all happen," Boehner said.

Woody grabbed the kid and then socked him in the throat.

We knew he was gone as coach at that moment.

Hayes was an incredible coach and man, who let his temper and competitiveness get the better of him. Might interest some of you on here that he was a veteran of WWII and taught military history at OSU in addition to his coaching duties.

Rasmussen in particular, in recent elections, has missed wide right -- "just a bit outside", as Uecker might say -- for the last two cycles. In fact, if you allow for that by adjusting your windage about 5 clicks to the left, they're pretty consistent.

So Trump would lose the popular vote something like 50 - 45. He'll win the states that Republicans always win -- the southeast and Texas. But he'll lose every battleground state and Clinton will crush him in electoral votes.

Here, let me give you a hand, Kari: But Trump will put NY and CA in play.

Ahhahahahaha no. He's not going to swing 25% of the electorate in either of those two states from D to R. That would be comical if it wasn't so insulting to the intelligence of those you're trying to fool.

The difference is that a team that is behind may still be able to win, and it's poor sportsmanship to stop playing the game.

The point of the primary season isn't to hold all the elections. It's to decide who the voters want. It's pretty clear at this point. It's not poor sportsmanship to yield when there's no mathematical chance of winning the nomination by vote; when the preference is becoming more and more clear.

But it's no skin off my back if Cruz wants every remaining state to clearly state their Trump preference. All of these actions reveal preferences and priorities on both sides.

420 It's amazing, isn't it? It's like saying the team that is behind should drop out NOW while there's still time left during the second half so the winning team no longer has to continue competing.
Posted by: chique d'afrique at April 29, 2016 12:00 PM (6bMel)

The difference is that a team that is behind may still be able to win, and it's poor sportsmanship to stop playing the game.

We'll go through this again.

If trump doesn't walk into the convention with 1237, the voting is between the top two.

If no one gets to 1237 in the first round, it's an open convention...between the top two.

The only path that katshitt has is:

1. to stay in and Cruz drops out
2. He deals with someone to be VP
3. The party fucks us all and runs a 'brokered' convention.

So if you wanna bitch about a parasite hanging in, aim in on katshitt.

430 "But he'll lose every battleground state and Clinton will crush him in electoral votes."

And Cruz will do better. How?

Trump has nothing to gain by attacking Carly, but earlier today Cruz was talking in Indiana about the havoc wrecked on IN by outsourcing while standing next to -- GET THIS -- a public enemy of outsourcing while she was at HP.

Meanwhile, Carly's shtick is that Trump and Hillary are but two sides of the same coin. Cruz amplifies this by saying that unless the good people of IN vote for AnoinTED the Apocalypse will occur.

Ted is showing that he's a vainglorious narcissist and a catspaw of the Romney led #NeverTrump Inner Party. He's killing his career.

Now before you say that Trump is a narcissist, which is true, note how Trump's sales pitch is aimed at "us", while Cruz's is always about Ted.

431 A candidate that cannot attract a majority of voters is a flawed candidate.

Trump has legions of vocal supporters, but he still needs to take the majority of the delegates to win. Why is that a confusing idea?

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 29, 2016 12:15 PM (Zu3d9)

Because maybe in this go round the RNC didn't clear the path of "stragglers" like they've done before because they don't like Trump (and are actually feeling down about his whole "voting" thing).

I'm not in charge of the Republican Party, they can do whatever the hell they want - but the people who invested in this election (not me, I don't get emotionally involved with anyone outside family) are not going to be happy about it. Again, why bother with the theater of voting?

435 Trump has taught me that classical liberalism is not popular. Which
actually explains the GOPe. No wonder they aren't very
libertarian/conservative: its simply not popular.

Yes, that is unfortunately right.

If you look at Pew polling of Republican voters, and ask what spending they favor cutting, a majority of *Republican voters* only favors cutting (a) foreign aid, and (b) welfare. That's it. Not entitlements, not even health care spending.

I think the rank and file Republican voter WANTS big government. And it shouldn't be surprising that politicians of any party pander to what the voters want.

And so we have Trump, who finally makes that all public, and says "screw the whole small government crap, what the people REALLY want is brash flag-waving nationalism!" And the people jump on board. So those of us who really DO want smaller government across the board are left with nowhere to go. We're going to have big intrusive government to stay now, at least for the foreseeable future. Either we have big intrusive government enforcing socialist aims, or we have big intrusive government enforcing populist/nationalist aims. Neither one is particularly appealing, since they are both big government.

---

http://preview.tinyurl.com/h86v52g

Trump's basically at 1000 now. Add 150 from California and the 51 from New Jersey and he's at 1200. So if he wins Indian, which currently looks likely, that's all the delegates he needs. And if you look at the other states left to go, that 1400 number from the internal memo that was roundly mocked in the last week or so suddenly looks reasonable.

Yeah it is sad.

I mean, the Trumpies might actually succeed in "destroying the GOP", but if they do so, they will be destroying any national force that stands, however imperfectly, on the side of less government instead of more government. No, Republicans are not perfect, but at least Republicans offered, at least in the past, a policy prescription to go along with their rhetoric towards reducing government. They haven't done very well on this score in the recent future, that is for sure. But Trump will just put the final nail in the coffin and then the country will truly be transformed to be just like Europe, where the two major parties only fight over who gets to administer the welfare state the best.

483 "Here Comes The Flood"

When the night shows
the signals grow on radios
All the strange things
they come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
still waiting for the swollen Easter tide
There's no point in direction we cannot
even choose a side.

I took the old track
the hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
they were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain
was warm and soaked the crowd.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Don't be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me
And if we break before the dawn, they'll
use up what we used to be.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

Here is what I think.
I think that in general, people who run for office as GOP want to reduce the power of government over people's lives. But they have to first compromise with *their own voters*, which as polling shows, is not nearly as interested in reducing government as the rhetoric might suggest, and then they also have to compromise with Democrats, who of course are on a quest to expand government to ever-greater heights. The net result is not appealing to anyone. But that spirit is there, nonetheless. With Trumpism, even the spirit dies. There is no longer any need to even play lipservice to the idea of smaller government.

Best is for Cruz to win the convention and win the general.

Trump is now a litmus test. Keep twisting.

551 "He [Cruz] is a bad candidate from likability and other such aspects. I think he actually improved in this area, which is hard to do.

He also has the usual so-con curse, which gets you votes in the primary, but causes trouble later.

The only reason I support him is that he seems more principled than usual, and has demonstrated that. He also has run a phenomenal ground game and organization.

Trump is like the antithesis: better natural politician, very few principles, poor organization, more likely to win, but less likely to deliver much.

That said, until you see the Dem oppo dump on Trump, you should be cautious. I pretty much believe all these guys have some dirt.

All very good points. I generally like and respect Ted Cruz, but he didn't become my choice until my first two fell by the wayside. His speaking style can come off too stilted and he drones on. He's much better in a relaxed setting one on one or with a town hall.

His excellent fundraising, recruitment of grass roots volunteers, and strong organization really impressed me. It's also hilarious the way he skewers Clinton with those funny, biting ads. I feel like I know what I get with Cruz - less flashy, but way more substance. Hillary is so vulnerable that I think Cruz can take her even after this rough primary.

Trump's campaign doesn't appeal to me the way it does to so many others. He's also acquired a lot of baggage in his 69 years. Hillary's team learned from their mistake in not digging up ammo on Obama in 2008. She'd be finishing her second term now if they'd properly utilized the Rev. Wright tapes in 2008. They'll carpet bomb Trump into a radioactive cinder. He'll fight back very vigorously, but what Obama did to Mitt Romney's business record will pale in comparison to what the Dems will do with Trump's.

552 Prediction: Cruz wins Republican nomination, Trump gets written in and wins Democratic nomination. Trump chooses Jeb Bush as his VP pick.

554 Big deal. I'm not here to deny that Bobby Knight was loud and vulgar- and an intimidator.

I'm sure his players signed scholarships knowing he would push them the hardest and make them better players in the process.

Seems to make better kids than telling all the yutes that everyone deserves triggerfree, safe spaces.
