Tin Foil Hats: The Newest Thing In Psychiatry (CBD)

**BUMPED so you have an open thread.**

FCC-Signs-Foil-Hats.jpg

This can't possibly be true. A Helmet That Treats Mental Illness? Okay, she is a scientist, and that is certainly impressive, but it's not like she has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, like Bill Nye! That, of course, confers upon the holder a magical understanding of all of science. But she does have a foul mouth, so maybe....

Like a good skeptical scientist, I started asking for evidence before I put any information about it on my website.

Had it been through phase three clinical trials? Yes.

Was it FDA approved? Yes.

Did they have long term clinical data? Yes.

Interesting. Probably not revolutionary, but people with psychiatric disorders that don't respond to conventional therapies tend to have bad outcomes, so if TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) doesn't injure them, and has positive clinical data, why not?

22 I heard about this recently, and my immediate response was, "sure, why not." If people demonstrate real benefits, then market the damned thing.

And that's how I heard it. Somebody with a vested interest was marketing it.

My thing is, we're still in the stone ages of mental health treatment. We still have pee-sigh-chiatrists who ALWAYS want to medicate everybody, because they really have no clue what else to do.

So sure. Let's try this. I don't see how it can be any worse than spending years and thousands of dollars pumping poisons into people, trying to make them feel better.

This Austin vs Uber/Lyft vote is getting heated up. In my neighborhood group there are 2 leftist making ridiculous points about how the law was already in place, how it's not about power/money, and, of course, how it's for our safety/for the children!!! I tried to stay quiet and not get involved.....but I couldn't. The stupid "logic/reason" they were coming up with was too. The analogies they keep using are what are so infuriating because they are horrible and plain stupid. This is a city council that just passed an ordinance banning employers from using criminal background checks as a condition of employment but want Uber/Lyft drivers to start fingerprinting for their background checks. 45 The constant bombardment by microwaves from cell towers, wi-fi hotspots, bluetooth devices, satellites, radio towers, etc. has to have some kind of effect. 46 This actually makes sense. Electroconvulsive therapy has a proven history of efficacy with many patients suffering from depression that are resistant to drug therapy. Yep. The part that bothers me though, patients have to go through all the medications before anyone will try ECT. It's assumed to be a last resort, and it strikes me as backwards that patients can't ask for it first. After all, the main concern is side effects. Seems to me the patient ought to get to decide which side effects he or she can live with, and which ones they cannot.

193 I'm so very late to this, but...I have anecdotal evidence this works.

First tour consular officer, I was the American Citizen services officer in Athens, so I dealt with Americans with problems overseas. I had a man come in, whispering that the IDF was beaming gamma rays into his back molars. And he was serious. Since I was green, I went to my boss, to ask him how to deal with this fellow, and he handed me a roll of aluminum foil, and said, "Make him a hat."

I was dumbfounded, and asked him if he was serious, (he was a a dour, silent fellow, and seldom laughed or joked) and he said he learned from his first posting as a consular officer to always have a roll of foil in his desk.

I took the foil, made a swan hat for the fellow, had him put it on, told him it was special, "Government" foil that was guaranteed to stop IDF gamma rays, and the man instantly said he was better, shook my hand, and left. He came back once a week for his "renewel" hat, until he returned to the US.

So, it's not scientific, it's purely my experience, but it helped this man.

But think it through -- you're not just commanding cadets -- for the number of balls (or lack thereof) you have to keep in the air over any given issue, it's pretty much equivalent to other postings at the same rate. And for what it's worth (it's not), it's less pay than a comparable job at a civilian university.

Pro: you get to meet a lot of people. Con: same.

206 193 I'm so very late to this, but...I have anecdotal evidence this works.

244 For example, the evolutionary biologist and the archaeologist talk about the pre-human, and even pre-life distant past as if color, sound, solidity, and a phenomenal world rather like that of modern Western humanity were all present even before the advent of life and consciousness, though physics tells us that all that is present in the absence of human beings or life is what can be described quantitatively by the particle theories of physics. Barfield emphasizes that contradiction between physics on the one hand, and on the other, sciences that offer an account of the earth before life and consciousness evolved.

245 Hard to believe - very hard to believe - that a magnetic field alone could exert much effect.

The electronic Zeeman energy for a spin 1/2 species in a 10 kilogauss field is only about 1 cm-1, i.e., 0.5% of the ambient energy at room temperature (210 cm-1, the Boltzmann energy), and about 0.06% of the energy of a hydrogen bond.

And that's for a hefty magnetic field (strong enough that you'd be hard pressed to put a wrench between the pole faces without the wrench slamming into one of them). And those pole faces on, e.g, an EPR spectrometer, are only about 5 cm apart - far closer than you could ever get on someone's head.

So color me skeptical. In the extreme.

278 Somebody took a gander at some old records regarding that star that may be a home to Aliens and found the star is dimming just a little bit each year. The data goes back about a hundred years.

The idea is the dimming is caused by the construction of something very big around that star.

Based on the rate of dimming I wonder what that translates into as a rate of construction.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 30, 2016 12:21 PM (IcpWm)

One of the many odd things about this is that Nenshi was trying to slam Uber because people with convictions got through. Except Uber would submit the names to exactly the same data base that every other group uses (I think it's run by the RCMP) for background checks. Any bad person who passed would be the fault of the RCMP, not Uber, but he tried to blame Uber for the non-failure of the non-applicants.

He's a self-aggrandizing blowhard and I wish he would just go away.

283 So who wins the FBI Comey primary? Nothing's been leaked to Catherine Herridge in over three weeks.

Puff piece in Newsweek on Huma, the next Valerie Jarrett, peace be unto her. Concerns over her ties to the Muslim Brotherhood are dismissed as "risible." Your meant to take away that Huma is the Anne Hathaway character in The Devil Wears Prada, the perfect alter ego assistant. Everyone in the know knows that to reach Hillary you have to get through Huma first. These days, Bill doesn't always make the cut: "She's taking a nap."

Huma should be a central figure in the FBI investigation. She simultaneously drew checks from State, the Foundation and Bill, and so could be the co-ordinator of pay for play. She probably did some or all of the retransmission of secure e-mails from the government system to Hillary's home brew server.

So what's in the 50,000 e-mails that Hillary said seh wiped clean, but Comey and the FBI have presumably recovered?

Developing .....

285 Speculation grows over Hillary's VP pick. There's no way she picks a white guy, would she? Will she double down on estrogen with Liz Warren to appeal to Feel the Bern? Julian Castro, one of the identical Mexican chipmunk twins, continues to get mention.

If it is Castro, I have a modest proposal that one of the twins be required to get an indelible ugly tattoo on his forehead. Because of the Constitution. Else we'll get too many bad TV shows and movies recreating the Man in the Iron Mask. Tattoo not good enough? OK, chop off someone's arm.

Amazingly, the Castro twins Mom is the founder of La Raza (the Race).

------------------------

Yeah, what gives? Andrew Napolitano seems certain that a grand jury has been convened and some of her aides have testified. I think he overstates things and fantasizes a bit.

My theory is that the explanation of the whole big mixup (as it will be portrayed) will universally run like this:

"Well, it came up, I think in a meeting, I can't really remember, that Hillary thought it was an inconvenience to carry two different devices for her emails, and we kicked a few ideas around, and one of them was just using the same email for all her business and making sure she sent everything to other peoples' .gov addresses, and someone passed it down to Bryan Pagliano, and he came up with his solution and we never really questioned it. We had so much to do, what with the country's foreign policy being such a mess after the Bush years, once Bryan set up the email address for her we never gave it a second thought. We never told him to set up a private server -- we don't even know what one is! -- so if he somehow got the idea that that was what Hillary wanted, it was just a misunderstanding."

A miscommunication -- a technical matter that Hillary left to an expert whom she trusted -- an unfortunate situation, but nothing bad happened -- there's no evidence that anything was ever compromised.

That assumes they're confident that the FBI hasn't got any evidence to the contrary.

Holy smack, that's a nugget. I had no idea. I think she'll have to pass on the Castro twins this time; that's just too much ammo for Trump.

And as for Liz Warren, forget that. No way does Hillary want someone with IDEAS and INDEPENDENCE and AN EAGERNESS TO WORK and all the sorts of things she pretends to laud in women.

Huma should be a central figure in the FBI investigation.
----------------------

I'm almost more fascinated by Huma's fate than I am by Hillary's. The elements she'll be bargaining with -- her freedom, her loyalty to her boss, her belief in everything she's done, her hatred of American institutions, her love for her young child -- will make this an epic tale.

What will she sacrifice? Whom will she betray? What will her calculations be?

Then again, she might get away with the whole thing and bask in fame, adulation, and prosperity for the rest of her life.

I too am fascinated by Huma. The pettiness of the way Hillary treats her, as revealed in the e-mails, is appalling.

Huma is beautiful (I know, not a universal opinion) and accomplished. I wonder what cause she is serving.

--------------------

If the "Gum" story is true (Hillary snaps fingers and says "Gum," and Huma brings it) then there's something wrong with Huma that I never suspected. She might have huge, secret stores of bitterness and resentment against Hillary. She might be ready to flip and go full revenge.

I agree that Huma is beautiful and accomplished. I've often wondered what motivates her. Sometimes I'm convinced it's proximity to power and the promise of wealth and more power as the Clintons expand their criminal enterprise. But in recent years, she's also gotten her own family.

If Clinton loses the FBI primary big, Huma will certainly play a major role. I think she'll get a special place in history because of her relative youth, her beauty, her stakes in the Clinton game, and whatever she winds up deciding and where it leaves her. I think she'll be the subject of many a book and film, like Mata Hari, the Anastasia pretender, and other women of corrupted potential.

297 and other women of corrupted potential.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at April 30, 2016 04:28 PM (1xUj/)

298 Someone was retransmitting secure communications from the government system onto Hillary's home brew. This likely involved Huma and/or Cheryl Mills, who had the necessary security clearances to gain access.

Government will know who looked at what and when on the secure system. If you then find it on the home brew, QED. That's a few provable crimes right there, without the need to have a talking witness. Pagliano might have direct knowledge, so that his testimony can further connect the dots.

Pagliano's testimony on setting up the home brew server can hang Hillary on her direct knowledge and her intent, so that she can't say she was unawares.

Some of the statutes that were violated over the e-mails only require recklessness, not specific intent, but it looks like there is proof of intent, which brings harsher statutes into play.

Pay-for-play is what will kill the Clintons, but it's unclear whether Comey is pursuing this. The names of 1,000 donors whose contributions were funneled through a Canadian affiliate of the Foundation have never been disclosed, because the Clintons claim it would violate British Columbian confidentiality laws. I'd bet that those names and what's on the 50,000 "deleted" e-mails would tell an interesting story.

I'd love to know what they've done to get disclosure of the 1,000 Canadian names. If they've done nothing it's dereliction.

The Clintons made a written commitment to the Obama administration that all names would be disclosed. Amazingly, the Canadian affiliate of the Foundation is the "Clinton Giustra Foundation" Frank Giustra is the Friend of Bill's who orchestrated the sale of 50% of the US domestic uranium supply to Putin and Friends, a deal that needed Hillary's sign-off as Secretary of State.
